Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 2C - Polls

Aug 29, 2012

Yesterday was a fortunate voting day for me and I'm hoping that luck will continue today. We saw No Rest for the Wicked and Bad Day at Black Rock (yeah!) make it through to the next round, while Scarecrow (sniff) and Yellow Fever are out. Today should be very interesting because each episode has strong supporters and they tend to be love or hate episodes. I know I have very strong opinions about them.

For our quotes nominations, we are now going to one episode per day. Today we have the sublime Lazarus Rising. Bet I can predict the most popular quote in this one. If you missed out on nominating earlier episodes, please click the links below. As also, happy voting!

  1. Easy voting day for me, especially in poll #1 since one episode is in my top 10 of all time while the other is in my bottom 10 of all time. Mystery Spot is classic Supernatural. Not only did it make me laugh until I cried "Do these tacos taste funny to you?" it also had me on the edge of my seat wondering what Sam was going to do. It is the perfect segue of comedy into drama wrapped up in a mystery. It's SPN at it's best and there are very few episodes I would ever vote for over it. On the other hand, TMwwbK commits the biggest SPN sin in my opinion. It's boring. There's almost no action and everything is told not shown. Mystery Spot any day for me.

The second poll is easy for me too because once again on of my top 10 episodes is in it. I adore Devil's Trap, probably because it was the first time I ever yelled Kripke at my TV. I thought they were safe. My adrenaline was wearing off and then he t-boned Metallicar. Argh! The weeks after was when the term hellatus was coined and boy was it ever. Still the ending isn't even the most suspenseful part of the episode. From the opening Meg torture scene with the most intense Dean we've ever gotten to the dad rescue to the revelation that dad was possessed, the whole episode was one mind bender after another and the intensity never let up. It's chock full of awesome. While I fully admit that On the Head of a Pin is powerful in its own right and Alastair is creepiest in this episode, OtHoaP is far too depressing for me. I'll take scary over suicidal, brothers united over brothers separated by an ever-widening chasm, and intense action over intense emo EVERY SINGLE TIME. Devil's Trap may not make it to the next round, but it sure deserves to be there.

  2. Lazarus Rising is one of the best episodes in Supernatural history. Strangely enough, it doesn't have my favorite quotes although there are definitely iconic ones in it. Most of its best moments don't have words. Brother hug. Sam giving Dean back the amulet. Dean's reaction when Bobby throws holy water in his face. Dean and Bobby hug. Castiel's entrance. Huge moments with nary a word needed.

    Lazarus Rising Quotes:

    17. Castiel: "I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition." 16. Dean: "Why'd you do it?" Cas: "Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you."15. Dean: "I know. I look fantastic huh?"14. Dean: " Your name is Robert Stephen Singer. You became a hunter after your wife got possessed. You're about the closest thing I have to a father. Bobby, it's me."13. Bobby: "I wanted you salted and burned. Usual drill, but Sam wouldn't have it." Dean: "Well I'm glad he won that one." 12. Dean: "Who's Jesse?" Pamela: "Well it wasn't forever." Dean: "His loss." Pamela: "Might be your gain." Dean: "Dude, I am so in." Sam: "Yeah, she's going to eat you alive." Dean: "Hey, I just got out of jail. Bring it." Pamela: "You're invited too Grumpy." Dean: "You are not invited."11. Cas: "I'm an angel of the Lord." 10. Pamela: "Alright, take each other's hands, and I need to touch something our mystery monster touched." Dean: "Whoa, well he didn't touch me there."9. DemonServer: "Go to hell." Sam: "Funny, I was going to say the same thing to you." 8. Dean: "Hey Bobby, what's the deal with the liquor store, hmm? Were your parents out of town or something." Bobby: "Like I said, the last few months ain't been all that easy."7. Dean: "I know. I should look like a Thriller video reject." 6. Cas: "Good things do happen Dean." Dean: "Not in my experience." 5. Dean: "And what visage are you in now huh? What? Holy tax accountant."4. Dean: "You mean the gas station and the motel. That was you talking. Buddy next time lower the volume." 3. Sam: "I assume you'll want to drive." Dean: "Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh…I almost forgot. Hey sweetheart, you miss me. Oh…What the hell is that?" Sam: "That's an iPod jack." Dean: "You were supposed to take care of her, not douche her up." Sam: "Dean, I thought it was my car." Dean: "Really."2. Bobby: "How'd you know he'd use that name?." Dean: "Are you kidding me? What don't I know about that kid?"1. Bobby: "This is a bad idea." Dean: "Yeah I couldn't agree more but what other choice do we have." Bobby: "We could choose life."

  3. I don't have Internet at my new place yet, which means I have to do these polls from my phone, which is a giant pain in the ass. So, forgive me if I don't expound too much...and I'll do the quotes once I have Internet and can use a real keyboard.

Phew. So I voted Mystery Spot because that episode is better than anything that aired in all of Season 6.

It was a tougher choice in the second poll, and I'm totally happy with either winning though I voted On the Head of A Pin. It was a purely visceral reaction to the poll.

  4. Also? Using this commenting system on the iPhone sucks. Just FYI. :-/

  5. Sorry it's such a pain to comment and vote but I'm glad you did. I liked season 6 but I have to agree. Mystery Spot is better than anything that happened that season. With the exception of The End, it's better than anything in season 5 for me too.

  6. Lol, I liked season 5 for the most part but I think I can agree about Mystery Spot. I have only three s5 eps I like more (according to my oh so accurate ranking) :)

Also, I couldn't vote and not comment! It's too much fun to talk about why this show is awesome. :)

  7. Argh! WHHHHYYYYY??????

These two are very painful votes for me- seriously. Yow.

    Okay....breathing now :P

    1. Mystery Spot- The Wednesday death by bullet made me cry! Poor Sam. It was really funny too, minus the car death and the Wednesday death and the first death. The montage was funny though because it was ridiculous. Sam going crazy was funny too, going all axe man crazy. XD Love Sam copying Dean's words in the diner, and the comment Sam made to the waitress about needing practice with her bow and arrow. Dean's expression. XD Gabriel is always great too, and I loved him getting all soft because of Sam begging and saving Dean in the end.

I love The Man Who Would Be King just because of the insight to Castiel's character. As someone who'd grown attached to his character, I needed to know why he was doing what he did. It softened the blow. Plus, I always like seeing him and while I hated seeing him at odds with the brothers, it really showed the unlikely friendship that had formed over the years since he first appeared. The only reason I didn't vote this one is because it was against Mystery Spot and the whole betrayal of trust thing.

    2. On The Head Of A Pin- Unlikely to win against a finale, but I voted with my heart. This episode has got a lot of darkness between Sam and Ruby, and Dean having to torture Alastair. Alastair was one of the reasons I voted for this one. Alastair #2 is creepy and sings songs that don't suit him. Yikes. Best villain ever that Sam had to kill way too soon. The other reason is Castiel's storyline. First him finding the dead angel (that actress really looked like an angel). It was a sad scene with the rain and I loved the lighting and seeing her wings at the end. Also liked him finally beginning to take a stand, starting with Uriel, who'd gone off the deep end. And this was probably the one episode I liked Anna. Usually it was a neither nor until she tried killing Mary and John, then I really disliked her. And finally, the hospital scene at the end was so sad and great at the same time. Must have watched it dozens of times when it first aired. Still one of my top Cas episodes.

Devil's Trap I loved, and the ending was a shocker, but I don't have as much a connection to besides it being the first episode of the show I ever watched. I didn't have a real care for the characters when I first watched. I was more curious what would happen after the accident. Even re-watching when I loved the characters- it's a great finale, solid, full of action, the best part is seeing Bobby, but it doesn't hold as much meaning to me as the following episode, IMTOD. Compared to OTHOAP, it was a very tough decision, but in the end, the episode that meant more to me won. I like meaning.

  8. Very hard choices today, so i ended up voting for Mystery Spot and On the Head of a Pin.

  9. easy mystery spot and on the head of a pin

  10. Hard!

I think The Man Who Would Be King is a very special episode and I for one really love it, however it did have the misfortune to go against one of the few episodes in the show's history which EVERYBODY loves. So yeah, Mystery Spot it is. No contest.

In the other one, On the Head of a Pin, one of my all time top favourites. Dean torturing Alastair and the reveal about the first seal is some of the very best stuff on SPN ever. Add the growing relationship between Dean and Cas and Sam killing Alastair with his powers like a boss and there you have an outstanding episode.
I love Devil's Trap, but mostly for its ending, while OTHOAP is great from beginning to end, hence my vote.

  11. It's a win-win situation for me today so I'm gonna go with the underdogs.
The Man Who Would Be King - It's a love it or hate it kind of episode, that's for sure, and I'm in the love it category.Pretty much every secret was revealed in one of the show's most heartbreaking moments. It was cool to see an episode from CAstiel's point of view.

On The Head of the Pin - It's not exactly an underdog, but I still don't think it'll win against Devil's Trap.In any case,it's in my Top 5 of favorite episodes. It had some pretty powerful moments with Sam,Dean and Alastair, the first angel on angel fight and the hospital scene between Dean and Cas,which made me want to crawl in my bed and not get up for a week.

Now for the quotes,I think I've expressed my love for Lazarus Rising sufficiently so far,so I'm not really gonna do it again, but that love includes the quotes. It's the hardest choice for me so far.I could nominate probably everything that came out of Castiel's mouth, but I've decided to skip the usual suspects ("I'm the one who gripped you tight...") and go with something different(at least for one of the quotes).

Ruby: "The sky bleeds, the ground quakes,it's cosmic. No demon can swing that. Not Lilith, not anybody."
    Sam: "The what can?"
Ruby: "Nothing I've ever seen before."
This whole scene gave me chills and made me really, really afraid(and excited) for what was coming. There's another cool quote during Sam's fight with the demon(Sam: "You saw it,what was it?" Demon: "It's the end. We're dead,we're all dead."),but we can't nominate everything.

And because I can't just skip one of the show's greatest moments,I'm gonna go with the episode's very last quote.
    Dean: "Why'd you do it?"
Cas: "Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you."

I remember watching this and I clearly remember my jaw hitting the floor! :p

  12. Oh man, this is cruel and unusual punishment, all of these are ones I watch over and over. I will not be disappointed no matter what wins, so here goes.

Picking The Man Who Would Be King because I loved seeing things from Castiels point of view(you can only build something so high with dried dung), but Mystery Spot is heartbreaking watching Sam trying to keep Dean from dying and going after Trickster, and I love how the writers can have me laughing one minute and close to tears the next.

Picking On The Head of the Pin, for me the scariest Demon they have ever had was Christopher Heyerdahl's Alastair, and him telling Dean he broke the first seal and was not the man his dad was and the hospital scene with Cas and that tear...sighDevil's Trap had me white knuckling it and that ending always makes me jump, even though I have watched it so many times.
So today I will be happy with any of them winning, this is one time I wish I could vote more than once so each of them would get a vote.

  13. I went with The Man Who Would be King in the first poll, no question. Not because I necessarily think it's better than Mystery Spot, but it's going to need all the votes it can get against such a beloved episode - and the two are just so different as it is. It's almost cruel to pit them against each other haha. I feel like I'm one of the few that loved TMWWbK. It's not even because I'm a fan of Castiel as a character. It was just so rare to get insight into such a closed off, mysterious character. Getting inside Castiel's head, and finally having access to his most intimate thoughts, was very cool to me.

The second poll, on the other hand, was more difficult. Again, I love both episodes, but it's a closer race. I just went with my gut, and chose On the Head of a Pin. It's such a powerful episode, and yes, I know it's an angst fest, but I think it was seeing that unholy torturer come out in Dean that pushes it over the edge. Plus, it has the added benefit of Alistair, who I think is one of the top two creepiest villains ever to appear on Supernatural.

  14. Wow. This is the first time I've seen a SPN poll tied. Should be a close race today.

    ReplyDelete
  15. First poll was really, really hard. There are only a few episodes I would vote for over TMWWBK, but Mystery Spot was one of them. I really loved what Edlund did with TMWWBK - everything from the telling of Cas's backstory, the seeing Raphael set up in Kenneth Lay's digs, to the interactions between Cas and Crowley. But in the end great Sam and Dean moments (in Mystery Spot) trump all else.

The second one was easy. I voted for OTHOAP. That episode had a lot of great scenes and action, from the Alistair torture scene, to Sam killing Alistair, to the Cas/Anna/Uriel scenes, to the end scene with Cas and Dean. This is probably because I came to series late, but I don't see anything exceptional about Devil's Trap other than the truck crash at the end. I'm sure it was suspenseful at the time, but it was overshadowed by what followed in later seasons.

  16. I honestly don't understand what exactly people are trying to understand by knowing the psychology of an angel. Honestly, there was not a single difference between humans and Castiel in that episode. Other than Crowley, nothing was of my interest in that episode.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mystery Spot--I usually hate Groundhog's Day episodes of shows, but this one was hilarious. The second one was harder. But I went with Devil's Trap, original Meg was so much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  18. devil trap and on the head of a pin two tough choices the battle is to tight and close both are great episode and my favorites

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Man Who Would be King is one of the few episodes of the series that I actively disliked. So...easy pick. In that poll. Mystery Spot.

Devil's Trap and On the Head of a Pin...was a little more difficult to decide. I went with Devil's Trap... I like OtHoaP just fine, but something about Jensen's performance left me off kilter...for me I felt like I'd been told how good he was at the job of torturer...and yet he was just a guy. I had expected to see a really terrifying guy emerge once Dean committed to the job and what I got felt perfunctory to me....and that threw me off.

    So.... Devil's Trap.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The first poll was really easy for me. I never liked TMWWBK so Mystery Spot gets my vote. It also helps that I just love Mystery Spot too! The second poll I voted for Devil's Trap. I thought it was a strong finale to the first season. I don't have anything against On The Head Of A Pin I just happen to like Devil's Trap more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is just to hard! And also a bit unfair, few episodes can compete with Mystery Spot. I cried Twice in that episode, on Dean's first death and his last, then I was laughing at all the deaths in between.
Then again, I also loved TMWWBK, I loved being able to see what Castiel had been up to all this time, and get the story from his pov, we rarely get that chance. I loved the finale scene confrentation scene, and felt bad for Castiel when they left him in the holy fire. This has got to be the toughest choice ever, but I'm going to have to vote for TMWWBK, I love both episodes, but I know most votes will go to Mystery Spot.
The second poll is nearly as hard, the season was finale had it all, I was nearly crying when Azazel was torturing Dean and Dean was begging John not to let it kill him. Then all the surprises, John being possessed, Meg's death, the finale scene. Just when we thought they were safe.
But, OTHOAP is emotional, and I like those kinds of episodes. Dean torturing Alastair, learning he broke the first seal, the battle between Castiel and Alastair, the look on Castiel's face when Sam said he could know kill demons(then killed Alastair) the battle between Castiel and Uriel, and the finale scene with Castiel and Dean. I really liked that episode, my vote has to go to it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have a similar problem with OTHOAP. I just can't buy the big problem Dean has with torturing, that finally has him throwing holy water to a demon, it's almost ludicrous, It just doesn't work for me. And then I also dislike the angels' plot. I feel for Dean at the end, but I don't like at all the twist with the first seal (and just dislike fourth season's second half's mytharc). So, I'm really glad Devi'sl Trap won this one.
