HIMYM - Season 8 - Abby Elliott gets a recurring role

SNL's loss is How I Met Your Mother's gain.

EW has learned exclusively that exiting Saturday Night Live cast member Abby Elliott has scored an arc on the upcoming season of HIMYM, which kicks off Monday, September 24.

Craig Thomas says : "We're thrilled to have the hilarious Abby Elliot joining us in an arc as Janeane, the craziest girl the HIMYM gang has ever encountered. And the strange, inexplicable phenomenon is : the crazier Janeane gets, the more attractive one of the gang finds her. It doesn't end well".

Elliott is best known for her work on the long-running sketch show, where her impressions of Zooey Deschanel and Rachael Maddow left a mark on audiences. Earlier this month, she announced that she was among the many familiar faces who would not appear in the new season of SNL (Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Paul Brittain also exited the show ; Jason Sudeikis's future on SNL is currently unknown). She had been there for 4 seasons (seasons 34-37, 2008-2012).

Abby Elliott’s father, Chris Elliott, also recurs on HIMYM, playing Lily's father, Mickey Aldrin.

Abby Elliott's first episode will air sometime in the new year.

  1. cool beans, if she is as funny as dad, then I'm going to like her, haven't watch SNL in forever (I mean like Alec and his Schweaty balls forever)

  2. I like her, I'm glad she's on HIMYM, that's one good reason for me to keep watching, although a 'final season' announcement would make me even happier :).

  3. Just heard about this, so we'll get a crazy chick on the show. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of character she plays.

  4. I did not realize that Abby Elliott and Chris Elliott were related, tbh.

  5. I don't think that's going to happen, at least not until season nine.

Either way, I don't want to lose The Office and HIMYM (and probably others) all in the same year.

  6. She was good (like most good actors/comedians) when given the right scripts.

But the show just put her in the corner for the last season. Shes good, and funny if she is given the right stuff, but she dont write for HIMYM or ever has on SNL i think. So it`s comes down to if the writers can write something good for her that works for her. Then again for me nothing with HIMYM works anymore, but that`s just me. :)

  7. She was underused on SNL but still great. Looking forward to the new season!

  8. At this point I hope there will be a season nine because if the
negotiations breakdown and this IS the final season, it won't give the
writers enough time to finish it properly. I know they already know how
it will end, but I think it would be better to go into writing a new
season knowing that it's the finale one. But at the same time, if 8 is
not the final season, I also hope they can keep the show interesting
which I am sure they will. I am probably one of the few HIMYM fans who
has no problem with when they will show who the mother is. I think
season 6 was really the best season of the entire show in terms of how the entire season's story was planned out. Watching all the episodes back to back really shows how they all connect with each other with much more depth. The show is still as good as it was since season 1 in my opinion which is rare for a show going into the 8th year.

  9. No idea who she is, never watched SNL. But looking forward to her on the show, I mean who doesn't like a crazy chick?
