Speaking with Carver at Comic-Con 2012, the former Supernatural writer and Being Human (Syfy) showrunner appears to have returned to his former series with a drive to keep evil at bay, at least for a few more years. Taking note from Supernatural series creator Eric Kripke’s original intent for a 5-year arc , Carver revealed his overall plan of plotting out a story that will help him at least reach his goal of “the end of season 10” – a plan that begins this year, in season 8.
Here’s what Carver had to say about the future of Supernatural:
We really are building some foundation for a storyline that can carry us on for at least a few more years. There’s a note card in my office that says “The end of season 10” right there.I have that note card; that note card exists in fantasy right now. I don’t know if there’s going to be a season 10 but, you know, that’s what keeps me getting up in the morning.

Ooh, I approve of this! Do want.
ReplyDeleteThere shouldn't be a season 10. There really, REALLY shouldn't be one.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I'm still going to watch it. Which is probably why there will be a season 10. Because of dumb sods like me who just can't stop watching this horribly written piece of emotional blackmail and overused homoerotic innuendo.
It's like crack and I regret nothing.
Sounds good.
ReplyDeleteThat would be sooo awesome !
ReplyDeleteThis is so lame... just games of dignity. Story for 2 more seasons? there wasn't a story in the last 3 seasons, so what can we expect? The show is so boring since Season 5, and CW already made 3 mistakes renew it another season. The ratings are low, this is a great time to say this show goodbye.
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY.
ReplyDeleteHey Dor Fiderer... no one cares :)
ReplyDeleteno one cares dor fiderer
ReplyDeleteI'm hopeful this will work. Having a multi-season myth arc or plan was what the first five seasons had that i think the last two were missing. I'd still kind of like the show to just end, but i'm one of those weird people who likes shows to only be like 4 seasons.
ReplyDeleteAgreeed!!!
ReplyDelete1. SPN's CW ratings aren't low, they're average.
ReplyDelete2. Jeremy Carver has had minimal involvement with Supernatural for the last two plus years and even when he did he wasn't the showrunner so assigning blame to him for the direction of the show over the last 3 seasons is unwarranted.
3. The show has been in a creative slump since Sara Gamble took over but it's never a mistake for a network to renew a show that has more of a loyal following than any other show (besides Vampire Diaries) on the network.
Really? There was no story for the last 2 seasons? ( Season 5 was the last Season of a 5 season arc).
ReplyDeleteThe storyline was "The aftermath of averting the apocalypse"
Ratings are low? Sorry shows are judged on a curve and that curve is the network. Supernatural was the 2nd higest rated show on the CW last season. Doing it in the worst spot for a show Friday at 9.
2nd highest rated show on the network is average?
ReplyDeleteThis show has sort of been drifting by in recent years. A return to a plan would be great. (not to say I've not enjoyed the recent seasons, but the leviathan felt like uber demons rather than something special)
ReplyDeleteAnd then after that they can have one more season just so we can say we have one more than Smallville and THEN they can end it.Or not,I wouldn't complain! ; )
ReplyDeleteSeriously,it would be really cool to reach 10.For now, fingers crossed for season 8 to be good(and I wholeheartedly believe it will be).
Since network viewership was sharply down across the board last season, yes. The show's ratings are average.
ReplyDeleteHow about wait and see how S8 turn out before saying the new arc is awful?
ReplyDeleteDrifting is a good way to put it. We'll see what happens with Gamble gone and new leadership in.
ReplyDeleteI have confidence Carver can bring back what's been lacking in the show for the last two years -- and that is an actual purpose. As long as Dean and Sam have a straightforward goal, the show hits all cylinders. It's the last two years where the goal was convoluted (and in the case of Castiel working with Crowley completely hidden for the majority of the season) which made it seem like the cohesiveness of the plot had come apart. I'm sure Sera's idea of slight of hand and misdirects looked good on paper, but they didn't play well on screen. So, with Carver having an actual plan and a real goal in mind, the show can once again get back on track and stay there. I'm looking forward to seeing what he has planned for the boys and welcome the idea of letting the Winchesters once again drive the plot instead of the other way around.
ReplyDeleteAmbitious... if the direction of the show improves with the new showrunners, I suppose I wouldn't be opposed... I do love the show, and I love seeing these boys on my TV from week to week, so I'm hopeful that this season will turn things around and show more than glimpses of the Supernatural I fell in love with in the first place. I still think they've got a lot of great writers and obviously an insanely vocal and devoted fan base, so I've got my fingers crossed that the showrunner was the problem (sorry, Sera).
ReplyDeleteI will say this not to be rude to anyone, but just because you don't like a show no more doesn't mean every one is on board with that idea.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of show's I feel out with, but I wouldn't wish it gone because people still love it.
I feel if they have a plan and J and J or behind the idea why now. What they're trying to do will be tough because they do need help in alot of areas. Such as writing and better management for the future.
DITTO
ReplyDeleteReally folks, if you don't like the show don't watch it. It's very simple. Then you won't have reason to complain/waste your time and people who do like it won't assume you are trolling. I think season 9 is pretty much guaranteed unless the leads don't sign their contracts or every new show is a bigger than Vampire Diaries hit (and even then I think SPN would still get a "final" season on the CW.) Season10 will be determined by this season's ratings. It should be very interesting to see how the ratings do since so may things are changing this season.
ReplyDeleteThe DITTO is on the watching it. I want further than 10.
ReplyDeleteI hope he's right. I honestly hope for longer. There are shows that have done it.
ReplyDelete"Really folks, if you don't like the show don't watch it. It's very
ReplyDeletesimple. Then you won't have reason to complain/waste your time and
people who do like it won't assume you are trolling."
Words to live by.
A regular viewer offering honest criticism is one thing but people the people who jump into the topics of shows they obviously dislike just to attack the program is sad and a little strange.
I absolutely agree. There are people commenting here about how Supernatural should be canceled that I don't remember seeing on any SPN thread before. You and I spend an awful lot of time here so it's baffling to me why they feel the need to comment on this one. It seems designed just to bad mouth a show and pick a fight. I understand honest criticism and I think many people here make valid points. I don't agree with them all (or even most probably) but many of these people have shared their opinions as the show was airing for 2 years now. Their concerns come with history, they are specific about what they found lacking, and they talk about what exactly they want to see improved. People who come on only this thread and make blanket statements about how the show is awful have no credibility with me. I tend to think that they are either jealous because their favorite isn't lasting as long or they are trying to get people riled up.
ReplyDeletei hope this show will expand beyond a season 10. As long as the writing remains as constantly awesome as it has been for the past years, i see no reason why it shouldnt. Supernatural has one of the most committed and loyal fan base that the CW has ever seen im sure (i dare say better than Buffy or vampire diaries-as a fan of the shows i will)
ReplyDeleteJared and Jensen (and misha and Jim too) make a stellar cast! The show has never been about the day to day monster or the season long journeys but the relationship between the brothers and how those moments impact their lives. It truly has touched its audience on an emotional level that seems to be lost on most series (no offence intended).
All im saying is...this is a show that deserves 10 seasons whether it will get it or not. it would be a true shame and i would mourn for the rest of my life if it didnt.
p.s. i look forward to the looks on the producers/actors/writers faces once they realize they need to extend the story beyond their plan once again.
Too right, if people don't like the show, why are they wasting theirs and our time by trolling and commenting unnecessarily on supernatural posts?
ReplyDeleteI knew it. Finally a new arc, this time make right please.
ReplyDeleteI will be with the show until the bitter end, so good for Jeremy.
ReplyDeleteI will be with the show until the glorious end. :-P
ReplyDeleteI do hope it goes to ten season but if its like season7 hell no. I hope carver does a great job but the stuff I have been reading about season 8 its sounds bad. but it be nice to see season 10 but I want to see the guys in movies and they cant to do that because of the show.
ReplyDeleteWell, Smallville was really good it's last seasons so this might be good, Stargate was also very fresh in it's last years. I really hope that building a new arc will give the show the cohesiveness that so direly needs. The last two seasons weren't bad per se in term of quality of the stand alone episodes, but the lack of a theme and overall pathos was a sure thumb all right for me.
ReplyDeleteBoth Jensen and Jared have been in movies while SPN has been going on.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping for a glorious end, but the way this show goes I am afraid it may be very bitter. lol
ReplyDeleteJust listening to how excited he seems about the prospect of a story arc for 2 more seasons gives me a lot of hope for the show. I know I will be watching until the end, no matter how far away that may happen to be. Honestly, I don't want it to end....
ReplyDeleteGOOD! YES! Planning ahead is great. I feel like that was probably one of the major problems of the last two seasons. They didn't even feel like they had so much as an end-goal in mind, much less an actual plan.
ReplyDeleteAlthough i woulld wish the actors a great career in other things, there is really no certainty that that would ever happen.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the J's are aware of that, otherwise if more important offers had come along they mght already have considered them.
Being practical, I think they are quite right to stay where they are and wait it out.
They're picking up a good pay-check anyway, and working in an environment they enjoy. Jared I believe once said that they get trreated like family on SPN something that he said doesn't happen making a film.
Who knows, they might start a series of SPN films is the series ever ends!
In the meantime I'm happy to see them on the small screen every week, rather than to see them humiliated in a bit part in some crappy film.
This is only my opinion of course
I love the show.
ReplyDeleteIt's emotionally coinvolging, has two wonderful uber-handsome terrific actors as leads; it has the kind of story-line that could continue to infinity and beyond! [ after all it deals with the after-life :) ]
Other than bad ratings, which in the overall perception of the CW network, SPN's are better than most of their other shows, or the actors pulling out, I see no reason why it should be cancelled.
It may at times have aspects or episodes that a person likes more or less, but what show doesn't?
I doubt that there is any show that hasn't delivered mediocre episodes once in a while, even those most highly acclaimed by the "critics"
There is a saying here in Italy that whoever wishes death on a person ends up by lengthening that person's life. I hope it works the same way for tv shows. :)
So all that's left to say is Supernatural for ever or rather, Sam and Dean for ever. :)
If there are stories to tell, and if the cast want to do 10 seasons, then go for it! It's only when things are dragged out beyond their natural life (hello X-Files, I am talking to you!) that I have a problem with renewals and seasons just for the hell of it. For me, Supernatural is still an entertaining show, and whilst it reamins that way I will watch it.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty much along for the ride as long as Jared is there, but I do hope season 8 is a vast improvement on the past 3 seasons.
ReplyDeletethe ratings have been good enough to keep it the 2nd highest rated show on the CW for the past 3 seasons.
ReplyDeleteIt also has the 2nd best DVR ratings, is the most pirated, the highest DVD seller. Not to mention that it's already in syndication so its making money.
If they cancel SPN based on ratings then they need to cancel everything on the network barring TVD.
Its a bit sad to have been watching a show you've found boring for the past 3 years. I assume there was a gun being held to your head forcing you to do so?
Do you meant that there's a probability that Jared would leave the show and SPN might continue without him?
ReplyDeleteI hope this never happens although nothing is written in stone.
If something like that happened, even if it was the opposite way round, I wouldn't watch any more because both brothers are at the heart of the story and without one or the other, it could still be called Supernatural, but it would no longer be the show I love.
Have you not seen Jared in Christmas Cottage, that was far from crappy?
ReplyDeleteI'll drink to this. ;)
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't, although I'm sure it was great because Jared is a great actor, but that was a few years ago now.
ReplyDeleteI would bet that in the film business things evolve pretty quickly; new actors arrive and it's easy for the older ones to get forgotten.
Jensen said somewhere that even trying to become a director was all political and it was difficult to enter those circles.
However, although I wish the J's all the best in their careers, I'm not all that interested in them as actors outside of SNP.
What I'm trying to say is that when I first watched SPN I had no idea who the two actors were. I had never watched Gilmore Girls and although I had seen a couple of episodes of Smallville I had never followed it. Therefore I knew nothing of Jensen or Jared as actors. They were unknowns to me.
What I fell in love with was the Winchester brothers and their story, and while it is Jared and Jensen that give them life, and they seem really wonderful guys, I'm more caught up in the imaginary world of the Winchesters rather than that of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.
I suppose that sounds weird but that's the way I feel.
Christmas Cottage was in 2008 and Jared is wonderful in it playing Thomas Kinkade's life, he even had to learn to paint left handed.
ReplyDeleteI also had never heard of either actor, but am now a fan and will watch and usually buy, anything they are in. But SPN is about family and I have never been this caught up in any other TV show as I have this one, I feel all their pain and joy.
If he has really GREAT idea how he wants the story to go, then I'm in;)
ReplyDelete.//.SEASON 10.//. planing .///.WOOOW.//// thats what i call over the top confidence about a product franchise .///.YESSSSS.//.give some out of the box episode is ok reminder always never lost the focus and thats future power source for me will be .//.THE ARK OF THE COVENANT.// the final rest place of the 10 commandments is gods final rules for us human kind to follow is the base of our believes is a basic .(rules) for us to keep balance with nature and people
ReplyDeleteSo if one makes a negative comment about Supernatural is automatically a troll? How nice and fair! I love Supernatural, but the last two seasons have been mediocre at best compared to the first five seasons. I won't stop watching it out of loyalty but that doesn't mean I can't comment about the continuous destruction of the show for the past two seasons. If season 8 is anything like the last two seasons then SPN should be cancelled instead of it being degraded even more. So I think it's only fair that I can get to comment about how atrocious the dialogue, and the plot etc, has been in the last two seasons, to the point of ruining the show!
ReplyDeleteSee my reply to Dahne below. I can offer constructive criticism if you want but not loving the show anymore doesn't mean I am not allowed to watch it, as you say in your comment! That's pretty offensive and disregarding of other people's opinions!
ReplyDeleteno I don't think it ever would go on without either J, but Jared is my reason for watching as long as he's happy and wants to carry on making the show I'll be there to watch. I definitely don't think the show works unless you have them both.
ReplyDeleteHow many seasons to the leads have the contract for?
ReplyDeleteThe end would have been glorious at season 5. I really liked the season 5 finale, but I love Supernatural and want more seasons, so I had no problem watching season 6. In fact, after the first few episodes of season 6, I started to really like Supernatural. Even season 7 was good, if not consistent. I think that plotting out 3 seasons of story beforehand like they are doing now is the best thing for the show. Whatever few complaints I have about season 6 and 7 probably stem from the fact that the seasons' arc did not seem fully thought out. So, mapping out the story until season 10 is good news to me.
ReplyDeleteHoping the actual ending will be as glorious as originally intended.
Judging by this post and your post below, it seems that you didn't read my comment very carefully before responding. Nowhere in my post did I say what anyone is or is not "allowed" to do.
ReplyDeleteI specifically said in my post that honest criticism by regular viewers were perfectly fine with me, and going by your post below you seem to still watch Supernatural with some regularity. I was in no way dismissive of your opinions and I certainly don't appreciate being accused of something I did not do. Please do not create "issues" with me where none exist. Thank you.
I would have hated it to end in season 5. You simply cannot leave a main character in hell and have that be a good ending. However, they couldn't have kept Sam from hell without killing a story line 2 years in the making. If they had Sam go to hell and pop up again one commercial break later - like they did in Swan Song - and then ended it, I might have gone to LA looking for Kripke in my ire. To have no answers on a show that won me over by providing answers would have been the worst ending of all.
ReplyDeleteThey are contracted through season 8 which means they should be in contract negotiations with the WB right now. I haven't heard anything about their contracts being renewed yet so my guess is they are still working out the details and maybe waiting to see what the ratings do at the beginning of season 8.
ReplyDeleteActually I know you John Mandrake as a Supernatural fan although it is bugging me from where. I recognized your name from your "Agreed!!!" so either you had a large presence here on SpoilerTV 2 years ago, which I think I would have remembered, or you posted regularly on one of the sites I went to before I came to STV. So basically no, I did not think you were a troll. I know you have been a Supernatural fan for awhile. However since you do not post on Supernatural threads here on SpoilerTV and you offered no criticism merely a single word in your response, it did come across as odd.
ReplyDeleteQuite honestly, I wish this had been your original post. It talks about what you don't like specifically and makes it clear that you were a fan of the show at one time. It also gives others a chance to respond to your criticisms. If you participated on the Supernatural threads on this site, you would know that people make negative comments all the time. And I mean ALL the time. No one is stopping anyone from having a negative opinion or giving their opinion and no we don't think those people who regularly comment are trolls even if they post negative opinions all the time. For one, we know them and when they post they don't just say it sucks but give specific things they don't like and encourage discussion of those things. Many times that lead to some of the best discussions we have. There are a wildly diverse set of opinions here. People who come on here saying the show should be canceled who never regularly post on the Supernatural threads look like they are trying to start a flame war and are commenting to just get a reaction. I strongly object to flame wars.
Your opinion of Supernatural is valid for you and you obviously can watch and comment on whatever you want. If a show was making me this unhappy, I would drop it but that's just me. Different strokes for different folks and all. We are also abounding in constructive criticism on this site so if you would like to post all the things that you are frustrated with in Supernatural these last two years, you will undoubtedly find people who agree with you and a whole lot of people itching to discuss (not fight) with you about your points. I encourage you to do so.
Seasons 4 and 5 are my personal favorites, but I liked many of the eps in 6 & 7 also.
ReplyDeleteRemember a few years ago when Supernatural fans were acting like complete snots to the Smallville fans? You know, dissing Smallville for going on so long and the whole "Kripke has a five year plan and the the show is done" thing, plus the all-around superior attitudes?
ReplyDeleteIf Supernatural lasts 10 seasons or longer I will laugh my ass off.
No one can deny that Supernatural brings in money. Now with all these new Netflix viewers on tenterhooks to watch season 7 and be ready for season 8 it should be interesting to see if DVD sales rise any. Any idea where we get that info? You are always in the know about the numbers.
ReplyDeleteI am a relatively new viewer of Supernatural and so I have never been involved in any past years' comments.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if Smallville got dissed by some SPN fans as I know now how unpleasant it is having a show that you like targetted by criticism.
As for Kripke's five year plan, I'm so glad he was proven wrong, for we wouldn't still have the Winchesters on the screen today if his "plan" had been carried out.
If SPN does go ten years like Smallville we will have that show to thank, as it set a precedent for SPN to follow. :)
You'll get no argument from me there!
ReplyDeleteI am a 7 year viewer of Supernatural but I dropped Smallville early on because I couldn't take any more of Lana Lang (or more accurately a combo of Lang and Kreuk, the actress who played her). I never saw SPN fans taunting Smallville fans but then again I wasn't looking at Smallville news. All I know is the sites I was on rarely mentioned Smallville and when it did, it was only either in ratings news or talking about Smallville as SPN's lead-in. I actually wish Smallville had gone another year or two if only because it was a better lead-in than Nikita was ratings wise.
ReplyDeleteI believe you're not a fan of Miss Kreuk, if I remember rightly. :)
ReplyDeleteI only watched a couple of episodes now and then, but I am not a fan of prequels on the whole because the future is already written and so any suspense is cancelled beforehand.
However, Smallville has been a great hit here and that's to its merit, as it's not easy for a lot of the US shows to become popular on our home market.
Yeah, I can see how it would catch people's imagination more than Nikita. We are talking Superman after all! :)
Yeah... The last scene where Sam was back... If they had to end it there, I don't think that would have been added... Without that, I could see how that would have made an ending... Sam sacrifices himself to end the apocalypse... Dean starts a normal life...
ReplyDeleteI would have hated for the show to end with Sam in the pit and Dean going on. As a fan I would have known that Dean would never be able to be truly happy with is brother in HELL.
ReplyDeleteIf the show had actually ended with season 5, the ending we saw would have been very different. I believe that both Sam and Dean would have died together.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that they are planning out an overall arc for seasons to come! Fingers crossed it gets there!
ReplyDeleteYeah, you're probably right... Well, it's a good think it did not end there then... Thinking of the ending, I wonder how they'll do it then... I don't think these can ever truly move on from the hunter life unless all the supernatural stuff somehow vanishes forever...
ReplyDeleteI have heard the comment many times about Butch Cassidy and Sundance and if one of them has to die at the end, then, for me at least, both have to go out in a blaze of glory.
ReplyDelete
