Once Upon a Time - Season 2 - Casting News - Jamie Chung cast as Mulan

A legendary warrior is joining Once Upon a Time‘s second season.

Hangover 2 and Sucker Punch actress Jamie Chung has been cast as the Chinese fighter Mulan in the show. The character is expected to have a recurring role in the ABC hit’s eagerly awaited second season.

The character originates from an ancient Chinese poem about Hua Mulan, a young woman who takes her elderly father’s place in the army. ABC’s parent company Disney adapted the story for a well-received 1988 animated musical film starring Ming-Na and Eddie Murphy.

  2. 1) I love Mulan.
    2) The movie came out in 1998 not 1988. :|

  3. I hope she knows some martial arts....i know nothing about her so ........?

  4. I suppose I don't have any major problem with this but I would have preferred that they cast a Chinese or Chinese-American actress for the part.

  5. I can't wait for Mulan! This woman is gorgeous.

  8. 1988?!I'm pretty sure I saw it in the theaters and in '88 I was -3.So maybe 1998...
Anyway,I love Mulan so I'm very excited for this!

  9. I loved the Disney movie when I was younger, but the jury's still out as far as her actually being a character on the show. Then again, they haven't really disappointed me so far, so I can probably get on board.

  10. She was in some miniseries as some katana-wielding warrior. So I don't doubt she'll be able to do the martial arts.

  11. I like this casting. Honestly never thought I'd like an actress that originated from Real World, but I do like Jamie Chung. Having Emilie de Ravin, Meghan Ory, and Jamie Chung next season should be nice.

  12. Well this is perfect. Great character and I really liked her in Sucker Punch, let's hope that her Mulan is even more kick-ass. :)

  13. Another nice casting choice!

  14. Next season looks better with every single news!

  15. The movie is based on a real person named Mulan and much older mythos:

  16. A pretty good actress and a very beautiful woman. I approve.

  17. Oh, right. She was in the private school episode way back in season one.

  18. Ah! I totally thought it was going to be her! That's Samurai Girl! Can't wait for OUaT's Season 2! Eee! =)

  19. Mulan??? Whoa. I wonder how they're going to work in that storyline. Not that I think it's a bad idea, of course.

  20. Most American's wouldn't know the diff. anyways. ;) But yeah, those Koreans are getting lots of parts in Hollywood (i.e., Grace Park), I've recently come to notice (ever since my Korean roommates). :")

  21. Yes, she does. Or, at least, she can fake it really well. Saw her in Samurai Girl and she was pretty good at on-screen martial arts. Kicked major butt.

  22. Mulan would likely be very helpful in the 'take back the kingdom' storyline. Between her martial arts &/or warrior fighting skills, and Red's Wolf-out attacks, next season's battle scenes should be great! Here's hoping the CGI is improved (take a page from Fringe, guys!).

  23. Good point. There are a fair amount of actresses of Korean descent working nowadays - probably a lot more than those of Chinese descent.

  24. As long as she can fake it well i'm good with that.I just hate seeing people in parts they can do or act in,its such a turn off...

  25. Yes your right.A guy that i was going with was Chinese, that's when i learned the differences.Sometimes they are very subtle and it could be hard to tell,to an American,Italian anyway!

  26. And hey, at least it isn't "Last Airbender" all over again. ;)

  27. I don't see how that relates to them getting the movie year wrong?
It clearly states it's the movie with Eddie Murphy...and that movie came out when I was a child... and I was most certainly not a child in 1988...

  28. Same for me, except I wasn't 3 in '88 but I was -2^^;;;;

  29. Oh, I thought you were just referring to any one of the movies as the "source material" for Mulan...as in, this movie about Mulan was just made, so why would they use it as a story character? -Not realizing that all the movie adaptations are based on the ancient legend...I didn't pay attention that you were referring to the articles date on that specific version, my bad ::blush::

  30. This is the best news I've heard all week! I was really hoping they'd cast her as soon as I heard the part for this was going out! :D
Now looking forward to OUAT season2 EVEN MORE AND I DIDN'T EVEN THINK THAT'D BE POSSIBLE!! :D

  31. Maybe she'll even become a series regular like Meghan Ory and Emilie De Ravin. I will hope so! Ugh this is such fantastic news and sure as hell makes up for all the bad news I've been hearing about the other shows I watch.

  32. Good choice, I like it. I only hope tht she retains movie!Mulan's humour and down-to-earthness.

  33. Wow,it's sounds awesome Jamie Chung casting in Once Upon A Time in Season 2.Cool can't wait:))

  34. Ahhhhh, Sucker Punch, that's where I remember her from. :) Good choice for Mulan.

  35. There is no way Mulan was in 1988. Hell no.
Even though I am not really looking forward to seeing Mulan on OUaT, I hope the actress is talented.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow, OUAT used non-Grimm or non-western tales! Nice, I hope this show can expand to other tales from other regions too...
