MOVIES : The Hunger Games : Mockingjay will be a two-part finale
Jul 11, 2012
MoviesLionsgate officially confirmed that the final installment of The Hunger Games franchise will be split into two movies. The studio announced that The Hunger Games : Mockingjay, Part I will hit theaters November 21, 2014, with The Hunger Games : Mockingjay, Part II closing out the series a year later.
Last June, we reported that Lionsgate was looking to split Suzanne Collins' third novel, Mockingjay, into two movies, although it hasn't been confirmed until now. The move has almost become a common practice as of late, with Warner splitting J.K Rowling's franchise finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, and Summit doing the same with Stephenie Meyer's Twilight : Breaking Dawn.
The studio will go into production next month on Catching Fire. Francis Lawrence is directing the sequel, although it's too early to tell if he will be back for this two-part Panem finale.
The Hunger Games, produced for a budget of $78 million, released in more than 50 countries between March 21 and March 23 and rated PG-13 in North America, has taken in $404 million in the US + Canada and $274 million elsewhere. The film opened four weeks ago in China and will open on September 28 in Japan.
Catching Fire comes to theaters November 22, 2013, Mockingjay, Part I comes to theaters November 21, 2014 and Mockingjay, Part II comes to theaters November 20, 2015.

I'm still not sure if I like it that movies are being split into two parts nowadays. On the one hand, yay for more screen time for characters. On the other, nay for maybe - too much screen time.
ReplyDeleteCan they stop doing this with the final books of series?
ReplyDeleteEveryone who is surprised by this raise your hand! Yeah, didn't think so, too :)
ReplyDeleteTBH I thought this was already confirmed. I suppose they get more money doing it like this. Can't wait for the next installment :)
ReplyDeleteI know it is a ploy to make more money, so who really can blame them? However, I do like the fact that if we get a two-parter, we will get to include some more stuff from the book. I usually find that in book to screen adaptations, a lot of stuff from the books is left out.
ReplyDeleteThe Deathly Hallows was actually a big book with a lot of events and it actually needed 2 movies. This crap and Twilight) only make it for money... Why do people watch this?!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you put this trilogy in the same category as Twilight instantly brings into question your taste in good literature.
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for Twilight since I've never read the books or watched the movies, but The Hunger Games trilogy is actually amazing and a damn good read. You sound like you're hating on it just for the sake of it. Bet you don't even know what you're talking about.
ReplyDeleteI've read both and neither are "literature" but very similar in quality and audience. Trying to make the argument that one is "better" than the other is very pot/kettle.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteThe book was pretty short, so I'm *a bit* surprised they found enough plot to make two movies out of it. Of course they could add stuff to make it work.
ReplyDeleteOf course it NEEDS a two part finale, so they can make more money, rolls eyes. I love The Hunger Game Books but I'm starting to hate the movie studios who don't realize that sometimes you can really sour a fan base when you pull crap like this. And they wonder why some people (not me) illegally download their stuff.
ReplyDeleteWas pretty sure they would do this especially with a trilogy. The 3rd and 4th movies might be shorter like under 2 hours instead of hunger games which was over 2 hours.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see the first movie! xD
ReplyDeleteNope, I actually do know what I'm talking about. I've read all Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games books and watched all the movies that have come out untill now. And The Hunger Games trilogy is in fact in the same category as Twilight, for me at least. They're just bad, that's it.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the series, it makes sense to split it up as quite a bit happens in the last book and this will allow for the movies to hopefully get into more detail.
ReplyDeletei love the hunger games but i think this is unnecessary mockingjay really wasn't that long
ReplyDeleteDoes this surprise anyone?
ReplyDeletenope...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they are breaking the third movie into 2 parts ... Yes I know its a plot to make more money but I will make the story complete (hopefully) without leaving info out from the book
