The rumor that Dame Diana Rigg will be portraying hte Queen of Thorns has been circulating for a few days now, but it appears to legitimate according to The Daily Mail Online.

"Diana Rigg (pictured), who will play Olenna Redwyne, aka Queen of Thorns (because of her sharp-tongue and prickliness), the wily grandmother of Margaery Tyrell in the third season of the highly popular drama series Game Of Thrones, which will start shooting next month.
The actress will be a semi-regular character throughout the third series of the show, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling novels. Olenna is a powerful, domineering matriarch and queen, who’s a mistress of the art of manipulation."

Olenna Redwyne is Mace Tyrell's mother and the grandmother of Loras and Margery Tyrell. She is very old and small with white hair. Often known by her nickname 'The Queen of Thorns', Lady Olenna rarely shies away from stating her opinion. She is described as a wizened, cunning old woman with a wicked and sharp tongue.

Of course HBO has yet to confirm this or any casting for Season 3. Perhaps Comic-Con will bring some official news and confirmation for many of the casting rumors out there.

  1. If HBO is not going to respond to e-mails and give official confirmation, it's nice to read a confirmation on a legitimate news site.

I always pictured a more petite actress in the role, Dame Dench, Sian Phillips or especially Fionnula Flanagan, but I think Rigg would do an awesome job as QoT!

  2. I always pictures Fionnula Flanagan and it will take me a little while to put somebody elses picture on The Queen of Thorns, But it does look like a good fit, so I´m sure it will work out good.

  4. The Daily Mail aren't a legitimate news site I'm afraid, they will have picked the rumour up from the internet and post it as real. One of the worst rags in the UK tbh :)

  5. Besides being reminded that she played James Bond's wife, I'm not familiar with her work.
Am looking forward to see how big/small her role in Game of Thrones will be. AFAIK the Queen of Thorns had some fun conversations with Sansa.

  6. That's true I guess....
To me though this is an outside source and has different details than any of the 3 other sources for the rumor I had heard.

Discussing the role as recurring throughout the season is new to me, as well as saying specifically she will be playing Olenna Redwyne. This is the first time I have heard anything regarding how big the role will be, if it will be in multiple episodes recurring etc.

All the other sources were guessing her to play that role, but this went beyond guessing, they stated it outright. Of course they could have just connected the dots and just stated it as fact when it supposition on their part.

Sometime soon HBO will start confirming some of these rumors.... Hopefully tomorrow!!

  7. I think because she's just come out of semi-retirement (screen wise) to film for Doctor Who with her daughter she easily sells column inches at the moment XD That said, she'd be fantastic in the role, and I certainly feel that this is more legitimate than the Tom Baker in the 50th anniversary of Who story which broke in The Express last week. So, fingers very much crossed :)

  13. I was only teasing, hence the XD, sorry if it was misconstrued ;)

I do second laura3341 in saying if you can ever get hold of any episodes they are well worth a look :) She was a huge sex symbol in the UK at the time, I'm too young for them too but have enjoyed catching them on cable channels.
