Well Mo Ryan wrote it is one of the worst shows of the season and all kinds of wrong! XD

Luckily I rarely agree with anything Mo Ryan feels in her reviews.
Been reading some very negative previews for this show, like even from critics usually all over this kind of show and Sorkin. Going to tune into the pilot but the promos whilst interesting haven't grab me too much.
ReplyDeleteYeah I have read a number of bad reviews too. Mostly about the show being too self-indulgent I guess. They all may be spot on, but they sound self-indulgent themselves in all their reviews so I am going to give it a chance and still have high expectations honestly.
ReplyDeleteI guess its going to be one of those shows everyone will be talking about good or bad. Been quite a few of those this year (Girls, Smash come to mind)
ReplyDeleteYep... All his shows are I guess.
ReplyDeleteI really hope it is better (to me) than girls which I found to be to unwatchable. Mostly because all the characters were people I would never want as friends (even to be around) or to contribute to the gene pool of humanity's future frankly! XD
Yeah I felt the same about Girls, I'm all for characters in shows having flaws in fact some of my all time favourites are massively flaws. The Girls characters were just plain annoying!
ReplyDeleteWow,well i'll watch it first decide after a few episodes..I read the rest of what you and Lou had to say, Sorkin can be self indulgent. I remember there being a few times when West Wing was on i had to turn it off. There were times when i felt he thought the audience didn't have a brain and here he was trying to tell us about history and politics. He can and does have a tendency to rub people the wrong way,i didn't watch his show to have him shove his politics and ideology down my throat...
ReplyDeleteAbout two to three years later i had a re-watch,it was better the second time around, guess it didn't bother me after going through it once already. Ha,i even enjoyed it more the second time around!
It's odd to read all the negative reviews that are upset at Sorkin being Sorkin and wanting something else. The Washington Post I think even bashed the Social Network along with Newsroom. I like Sorkin's style, so I'm taking all this with a grain of salt--for now. I enjoy watching a world where everyone is articulate and witty, and don't feel it really necessary to dumb it down to seem more real. I don't like the idea of shooting in real time either. But then again I watch vampire TV shows, so my tolerance for a lack of "reality" might be high.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of Sorkin's brilliance is in the things that makes some people hate him. XD
ReplyDeleteHe does lecture at times and his work does not hedge fences. Rarely does that bother me personally I guess since I tend to be in step with his politics for the most part. and I like uncompromising positions by showrunners and writers.
I always loved the political rambling closings of Alan Shore on Boston Legal too and they were often very slanted and self-indulgent... albeit more funny than much of Sorkin's work.
That's how I felt reading the reviews too.
ReplyDeleteYou kinda know what you are getting with Sorkin and to be surprised at it when he gives it to you is just silly. I can see people not being entertained or liking it, but being surprised? not so much.
She was harsh! Not that I usually agree with her or am bothered to read her reviews that annoy me, but still that was not kind. Most of her critique goes against the Sorkin that I like--not creating warm likable characters? Toby? Josh? Dan? (I'm going to stop now because I'll be going all day), I mean he made Mark Zuckerburg into a subtle antihero. I read the spoiler script they posted and it was fantastic, so either HBO/directors/producers made some serious changes or the director wanted it performed somehow that wasn't how I read it. I guess that is my biggest concern.
ReplyDeleteBut if you didn't like the West Wing, you are kinda out for me trusting your opinion and I don't care where you went to journalism school. xD
I loved Alan Shore,i miss that show so much i can't begin to tell you! Yes Alan's was also slanted but i guess it coming from him i didn't mind.I welcome Sorkin, and his viewpoint,he is one hell of a writer whether one agrees or disagrees he is entertaining and thought provoking...I hope you get to watch West Wing sooner rather than later,i know hiw much you will like it...
ReplyDeleteI'll wait and see and make my own mind.
ReplyDeleteSounds like it's pretty much what I expected.
ReplyDeleteThough unlike the reviewer I don't mind. When you sing up for a AS show you know you'll get constantly witty, unrealistically overly smart and preachy. And yes more often than not, it gets annoying, but it is the way the man writes that makes you want to watch regardless... I am quite looking forward to this one!
Darque, did you see this from EW today,a political takeoff using GOT here:

Yep saw those earlier this week, but was did not enjoy them since I was in a bad mood! I watched again and they are fun! XD
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder.....
