Sooo...any bets on how long it takes for this "villain" to: - Start crying and wimping out. - Getting a crush on some schoolgirl. - Shouting empty threats and not even managing to be threatening - Joining the main cast/getting killed off without purpose.
No offense, TVD, but you REALLY suck at villains so far.
True dat. Damon was the best villain this show ever had by a large margin. Klaus started off well but soon got neutered (Crushing on Caroline? WTF?), at this point they really need to kill him off and pretend he never existed.
And if their not gonna put Damon/Elena together, then just stop the teasing and make Damon go full on bats shit crazy again.
I thought the same thing in regard to the "crush on some schoolgirl" bit... male villains on this show don't tend to leave Mystic Falls unscathed when it comes to romance. It's a bit pathetic now, especially when I don't see what they do in Elena.
this show just outright has no idea on HOW to write those villains.
The start is decent. They get A LOT of hype from other characters.
But then they start getting screentime. And writers forget that VILLAIN has to be "threatening" and feel tangible and real. Villains can have backstories and layers, but they are NOT someone you are supposed to LIKE. Thats the difference between "antagonist" and "villain". Theya re the characters that should give viewers chills by their presence and should feel THREATENING and dangerous and actually DO damage.
As it stands, Klaus has been all talk. And his goal was, what? Building a friggin house. How exciting. For someone who had such a GREAT buildup in second season, writers completely dropped the ball on that one.
Klaus's goal was to become invincible and break the curse. Which he DID. He did this by killing Aunt Jenna, and almost killing Damon, Tyler, Caroline, and Elena (who in all fairness he did actually kill, but she came back to life), and thought he killed Bonnie and holding Katherine hostage. That's a pretty big body count and alot of drama. He was scary and threatening and DID a lot of damage. That was when he was the villain.
But we kinda thought he was fascinating because Joseph Morgan was really good, so they brought back the originals. Who weren't so much THE Villains anymore because their kill everybody goal had been attained. Now they were really powerful neighbors who you shouldn't piss off. Klaus had different goals and the primary one of which was making a life for himself, bringing back his family, finding people who liked him. That meant making connections. Sure he was still looking out for number one, but he wasn't actively the villain.
It's funny you certainly don't hold Regina on OUAT in the same kind of contempt you hold Klaus. You want her to have a love story and be a rounded character. Why not the same here? Giving motivations and emotions and conflict to the villains seems to be right up your alley. Why does it piss you off on TVD?
Yup and the fact that they didn't kill him off just made things worse. Next season it will be what the 34596825 time the gang comes up with a plan to kill Klaus? Played out isn't a strong enough word for the whole mess that has become Klaus.
Beyond what @Bruce_F said below, which I totally agree with, Stefan is head over heels for Elena and isn't really looking at anyone else but they did become friends, and actually Damon did "go" for her.
- I have no problem with adding the April character as long as she's human. We don't need to pile on the non-villain supernatural characters. More humans is a good thing. - If the show wants to cast a new badass villain, the first step would be to NOT name him Connor. You might as well name the guy Leslie or Aubrey.
The only real problem with Klaus as a villain (or as a character in general) is that he's still around. He should have stayed desiccated and buried in the ground. His purpose and his storyline had run its course by the end of the S3 finale but TVD chose popularity over artistic integrity and kept him around.
To be fair, the reason Damon went for Caroline was part strategy and part "I'm bored and want something to play with." He didn't really give a rat's ass about her as a person. She was just a convenient distraction to him.
The producers, especially Plec, keep talking about Damon's continuing evolution as a character and someday I hope that includes making amends to Caroline because he really treated her like sh*t.
Ha, I suppose you're right - I do love Caroline! It's more the Elena issue for me. She's a main character that I haven't truly fallen in love with - and it's hard for me to believe that all these badass men mysteriously want to be good again when she's around. So strange.
Connor on Angel = bad, Connor on Highlander = bad-ass!
I loved Connor McLeod from the clan McLeod! http://www.thatfilmguy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Highlander.jpg
I read that they tried to revive the franchise again some years back with a new McLeod, Duncan McLeod played by Kevin McKidd! XD Too bad, I would have liked to have seen that.... maybe. Then again, maybe not.... Some Highlander projects were better than others! XD
not exactly different character. A natural and coherent progression of that character(Carline is pretty much the only character with coherent meaningful character growth)
And Damon did not "go for her". IT WAS pretty much rape and abuse and I am not really comfortable with people treating it as something "romantic".
considering Plec's tendency to rip off Whedon's show, I guess he will be more like Connor from Angel, but even more failing version of it, since plec does not have talent to correctly copy the ideas :)
Sure I know, it wasn't exactly a "great" love (ha!), but I was just saying that he didn't flat turn her down as Chalice99 implied. She was intriguing enough to be the one he chose to use in a horrible manner that he totally needs to make up for someday.
I'm actually looking forward to the Damon/Caroline resolution fight someday. It think it should be really fun and snarky.
I really meant the Caroline thing as a lighthearted joke. Oh well.
"And Damon did not "go for her". IT WAS pretty much rape and abuse and I am not really comfortable with people treating it as something "romantic"
I never said he did "go for her" and if you bothered to read my other post on the subject you'd see that I actually agree with you on that point. Anyway...
I like Caroline but her character progression from human to vampire made no sense whatsoever.
Becoming a vampire on this show is supposed to heighten your emotions and emphasize the character traits you already possess. Hers included severe insecurity, low self-esteem, jealousy, and general emotional fragility. If TVD held true to those guidelines the vampire version of Caroline would have realistically resembled a much worse version of Rebekah and not "Caroline: patron saint of vampires."
I can see that. I know some people don't like him or any of the originals for that matter. I do. And since they kill off so many characters adding to the cast every once in a while doesn't bother me. But for me, I'm not looking for a brilliantly architected, captivatingly written story, with vision and soul in the Vampire Diaries, as such IMHO I don't think the writers have a five-year plan that they've "sold out" to add the originals, I think they stumbled on something that they liked and other people liked and went with it. Maybe his story is done for some people, which is totally legitimate and the new villain coming should be a nice infusion of new evil.
But being tired of him isn't the same as saying the show can't write a villain or that Klaus should never have been developed as a character because villains have to be black and white w/o a likable bone in their bodies. But that's just me.
I don't dislike the originals. A character like Elijah popping up now and again is just fine and Rebekah has a lot more life left in her character. I don't dislike Klaus either. Klaus was an interesting, dynamic character whose arc had a proper beginning, a middle, and an end. My problem is that TVD chose to extend the character beyond what should have been his natural conclusion.
TVD should have let the Klaus character (and Joseph Morgan) go and made Claire Holt a series regular instead. It's Rebekah, not Klaus, who still has longevity and direction as a character.
But through S1 she OVERCAME most of her insecurities and complexes and what was left was her control freak nature.
She was never like Becky. she was not "vain" her character archetype was all about complexes and overcompensation, which she overcame before becoming a vampire.
Rebekah's problems don't stem from vanity. Rebekah is the type of vampire you end up with when you're routinely ignored and when you do get attention are treated like crap.
I like the first movie quite a bit at the time (looking back it's not as good as I thought), but the rest of the movies were dreadful. The series with Adrian Paul was good cheesy fun to me though. It had its limitations like most Canadian SciFi shows, but I was entertained week to week.
That's interesting. Sorry, I didn't mean to overascribe. I just meant I've read a lot of originals hate. For me, Rebekah was always kinda flat, one-note daddy issues character. I never really grabbed on to her much. I preferred the sly Klaus and I thought there were lots more places he could go, as long as it didn't mean threatening Elena, having her fight back by threatening to sacrificing herself, and him backing off. But, isn't Claire Holt back next season too?
Sorry, I said "go." I put it in quotation marks as a shorthand, let's not go all the way down that rabbit hole, way of describing the pseudo relationship, meaning he pursued her, ie, he didn't turn her down. No one said it was "romantic." And there is nothing lovey-dovey about the word go, especially in quotation marks. I don't think what Damon did to Caroline was right, and I'm pretty sure no one said it was.
Holt is coming back but the show has not upped her to a regular as they did with Morgan before the start of S3. I would liked to have seen the show at least reverse that situation after the end of last season.
"we're not sure yet whether she's got a hidden agenda" bwahaha of COURSE she's got a hidden agenda. The writers can barely service the huge regular/recurring cast they have....why would that add a character that's not directly related to a specific story.
Well, it would be fun to have a human character (again) who has no idea about vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. but I'm sure that's not where they're going with this.
hmm. April, maybe a possible love interest for Matt? I mean, she's human, so Matt doesn't have to worry about crazy shit that he has to do with Rebekah. And also, Rebekah tried to kill him.
Hey! Angel's son wasn't evil (hard to believe if we consider who his parents were). He was just confused. So would be you if you would grow up in hell dimension.
We don't know yet, if she knows (or what she knows) about vampires and werewolves.
We don't know who she is. She comes to town "after a death in the family"
That could be Bill. Caroline never mentioned a sister or cousin. Doesn't mean she doesn't have one. Or she could be the daughter of Bills lover. We know that he had one. But we don't know if he is form MF. If he isn't, April couldn't grow up with Jeremy and Elena.
Who else died? Alaric. But he wasn't from MF.
The doctor. What was his name? Meredith's ex, found in the woods killed like a vampire? He was to young for a daughter. But she could be his sister or cousin. Means, she's from MF and a founding family, so she would know.
I don't know. We'll see. I wish it would be October. I hate to wait!!!!
I'm thinking Phoebe Tonkin might land the role of April since Kevin Williamson made it clear that Secret Circle was over and that he would love to have her on Vampire Diaries. I hope it's true since her character was the only reason I tuned in to Secret Circle once or twice during its run.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Seeing this article reminds me of The Secret Circle, I already miss it so :(!

ReplyDeleteI don't dislike the originals. A character like Elijah popping up now and again is just fine and Rebekah has a lot more life left in her character. I don't dislike Klaus either.
