This contest is really stretching my episode title knowledge!! I should have started memorizing their names a long time ago if I wanted to be ready for the big leagues. ::woefully out of my depth::
ReplyDeleteSince I thoroughly dislike half of these episodes, today's round is easy for me. I'm voting against episodes as much as I am voting for them.
ReplyDelete1. Exile on Main St. - I really liked this episode so that puts me in the minority. I really, really hated Jump the Shark which I believer puts me in the majority. This one will come down to which episode people disliked the least. Easy for me because NOTHING excuses introducing Adam into the mix. I'd probably vote for Bugs before this one.
2. Hook Man - never thought I'd see the day when I voted for Hook Man. The Lori character is one of the most annoying PiPs they have ever had. But Ghostfacers wins on the sheer fact that there are far more people in it to annoy me. I LOATHE the Ghostfacers episode. I spent the whole time in shock. We only had 4 more episodes to look for a way to keep Dean out of hell and they wasted my time and an entire episode with this junk. What the hell Kripke!
3. Malleus Maleficarum - I actually don't mind either of these episodes and would chose them over half the ones in today's line up. In the end I went with MM because even though I thought the old guys in CAiaDB wer a lot of fun, MM was more powerful a story for me and less forgettable.
4. Sex and Violence - all the way. I loved the way the FBI guy ended up being the siren and how sirens weren't just about physical love but were more about filling people's emotional needs. The scene in the hallway with Dean and Sam under its spell was intense. All around I loved this episode. However, Playthings to me is Dead in the Water 2.0 and a very poor imitation at that.
5. Adventures in Babysitting - in all honesty this is an utterly forgettable episode and for the most part Krissy is annoying. It wins because I would pay to forget Family Remains. Just terrible in all aspects.
6. The Kids are Alright - This and Dead in the Water are by far my favorite episodes in the wild card contest. I love everything about this episode and quite frankly it surprised me that it didn't make it into the top 100 ranked episodes. Ben was awesome as Mini-Dean and the changelings were more scary than anything since season 1. When that girl asks for ice cream dripping wet, I was completely creeped out. This whole episode is made of win. As for Route 666 and its fencepost guest acting, well the least said the better.
Sorry! It will only get worse when we are in the actual contest. The best suggestion would be to go to IMDb and read the synopsis of the episodes. I can help you here though. Hope it helps.
ReplyDeleteJump the Shark - The introduction of Adam "Winchester" Mulligan and ghouls
Exile on Main St. - season 6 premiere with Dean living with Lisa and RoboSam coming back to get him
Ghostfacers - the guys who think they know everything about ghost hunting but really know nothing
Hook Man - preacher's daughter subconsciously punishing the wicked through the Hook Man
Malleus Maleficarum - the evil suburban witches and Ruby's witchy history
Criss Angel is a Douche Bag - magicians dying in horrible ways
Sex and Violence - hunting a siren who ends up being the FBI guy working with Dean
Playthings - ghost kid haunting an old inn, aka the one with the dolls
Family Remains - inbred girl living in the walls eating rats and people
Adventures in Babysitting - hunter goes missing so his teen teams up with the Winchesters to find him
Route 666 - killer racist truck and Dean's old flame (the truck was more animated)
The Kids are Alright - introduction to Lisa and Ben, very scary changeling kids
Jump the Shark - I had the highest of high expectations for the season 6 premiere. I was left COLD. The turning point was when Dean finally reunited with Sam, and I was greeted not with a Sammy-type reunion, but something odd and unfamiliar. I HATED IT. Then to find out that he'd been back for a year...well let's just say that sometimes my empathy for the character of Dean Winchester goes too far. I was livid on his behalf. For that reason I just can't pick Exile. I don't necessarily enjoy watching Jump the Shark, but it has some really good Sam and Dean moments that we get to see through the eyes of Adam (who's sadly a ghoul...very sadly). Specifically I'm thinking of the rock/paper/scissors moment to decide who goes into the central air ducts. lol. I also found the character of Adam interesting and responded to the threat he posed to Dean; that maybe Dean didn't know his dad as well as he thought. Which is sad, because for the most part I like John as a character...for the most part.
ReplyDeleteGhostfacers - Hook Man is just bad. Again with the season 1 bad guest role casting. :-\ Ghostfacers was fun, but of all the season 3 episodes that wasted time, this one was the worst. It's a bummer that it came in season 3. Ah well.
Malleus Maleficarum - The only thing I like about Criss Angel is a Douche Bag (aside from the title) are the guest stars! Malleus Maleficarum on the other hand had a decent plot; and gave us some interesting new perspective on Ruby.
Playthings - Drunk and emo Sam. :( And dolls. Dean saying Sam plays with dolls. Very amusing. Sex and Violence was also good, but I don't like the way the siren played Sam and Dean off each other, and Bobby's perfectly timed arrival was a bit Deus ex Machina...
Family Remains - Kind of a terrible follow up to Heaven and Hell (one of season 4's best IMO!), but creepy and gross enough to be interesting. It also features Sam and Dean actually working together, unlike Adventures in Babysitting which, while fun at times, had the boys apart nearly the entire episode.
The Kids Are Alright - Lisa and Ben's intro. I always liked them both, and a part of me will always believe Dean really was Ben's dad...I wasn't the biggest fan of the MOTW aspect of this one, but I liked how Dean connected with Ben and I really believe this was the start of Dean's journey of realization of his self-worth (culminating in Dream a Little Dream). Also, the birthday party scenes are pretty funny.
Well we have almost exactly opposite votes this poll. I don't mind either episode winning in any of the contests, except the first one. I just can't forgive how much Exile on Main St. crushed my heart. Also, I didn't know you had so much dislike for Jump the Shark!
ReplyDeleteWe do agree on the waste of Ghostfacers in season 3, but I still can't vote Hook Man over it. Hook Man was just...ugh. No fun.
In My Time of Dying. My most watched episode for sure. I love it like Dean loves pie. So many great quotes.
ReplyDeleteHave fallen woefully behind on quotes.
ReplyDeleteepguides.com/Supernatural list of ep titles with links to ep descriptions. It's the only way I've survived these things. :-)
ReplyDeleteJump the Shark and I Believe the Children are the Future are the two biggest conceptual mistakes Supernatural has ever made in my opinion. They weren't just bad on an episode level. They had the potential to screw SPN up beyond all recognition at the foundational level. No good could ever have come out of these stories and Jump the Shark made good on that. By doing the whole Adam as Michael's vessel switcharoo, they completely screwed up the only good thing that season 5's overarching story still had going for it and basically wasted all the tension the season had built up. I cannot explain in words how much I loathe Adam's very presence as canon in the series. It was like bad fan fic showing up on my TV screen.
ReplyDeleteClap Your Hands if You Believe may also fall under this category as the seasons progress.
I wasn't online at the time when Jump the Shark aired. What was the fans reaction?
ReplyDeleteIt had to be pretty epic.lol
HA! You and me both. I have decided to leave the nominations up until hellatus ends or we are 3 weeks from starting the actual quotes competition, whichever comes first, so people have plenty of time to rewatch the episodes. Quotes are turning out to be as difficult/time consuming as I feared they might be. The best thing about stopping for Adam's Best Show contest is that I can finally get ahead in the quotes instead of always playing catch up.
ReplyDeleteThe fan reaction was explosive before the episode even aired. The idea of a third Winchester brother did not go over well at all. So much so that Kripke named the episode Jump the Shark simply because that's what people were accusing him of doing. Basically it was considered Supernatural blasphemy.
ReplyDeleteexplosive! I bet it was, I remember reading the info on the cable guide in had to do a double take. WTF 3rd brother.
ReplyDeleteI can agree about Adam and the end of season 5, too. I was hoping for a Dean/Michael and Sam/Lucifer showdown...or something. Still - I do like Jump the Shark as an episode (though it is really, really, really gross!).
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to find someone else who loathes Clap Your Hands as much as I do. I find one part of that episode funny/enjoyable and it's not even a line that Ben Edlund wrote, it was imrpov'd by Jared ("Do you have bigger cups?").
Exile On Main Street all the way for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't exactly know why, but I really love that episode. :)
Perhaps it's because I adore the opening with "Beautiful Loser" and the flashbacks, or because we get to see Sam again and get a hug between the boys even if it is one sided. I just love the expression in Dean's eyes and on his face when he understands that its really Sam standing in front of him.
Then the scene where Dean tries to shoot the Yorkie was hilarious and I loved his snarkiness with the yuckie Campbell family; also when Lisa and Ben see Sam for the first time.
The devil is in the details so they say, and there were just so many little moments I liked.
Oh yes, and the way Dean shouts out Bobby; he really deserved it . How could he not know that Dean would be agonizing over the death and fate of Sammy. Bad Bobby!!!
It's one of those episodes I can watch over and over and never tire of. :)
Jump the shark had a 100% shock value. Another Winchester! but that was all.
Then I hated how Adam was dead at the end. They made us suffer through Sam and Dean's adjustment to him for nothing. I honestly would have preferred him to have been alive and gone off tto Australia like Jesse!
X
Voted Hook Man.
I can't give it to the Ghostfacers, so it must go to Hook Man.It wasn't the best of the episodes but the Winchesters were so young and pretty in it and them trying to get into the girls' quarters was cute.
X
Voted Malleus Malleficarum.
It was a very interesting episode. There was some gruesome stuff in it. I just can't forget the vermin hamburger Yuck. The demon witch was very convincing too and the dumb housewives just double dumb!. I can understand why Dean hates witches.
I have never really liked the other one CAIADB, the ending was too depressing for my taste although Kudos to the older actors for their performances. I believe that was the one with the opening scene of Sam and Dean playing Pool. Really sweet
X
Voted Playthings but I would have voted Sex and Violence too.
I loved both these episodes but for different reasons.
Sex and Violence was a powerful, dramatic episode, full of defining moments about the brothers' relationship, and the way they confronted each other at the end in the big fight was really emotional, but so so sad.
I love the last scene with the two boys drinking while leaning on the Implala, and do Sam's eyes flash yellow for a second?
I'm going to be shallow here and say I loved Sam's scene with Dr Cara; at least he had a good time with a normal woman for once and I smiled that it annoyed Dean that she preferred Sam to him. :)
Playthings is such a cute brotherly episode too, then who can resist drunk Sammy, and as I'm in an optimistic mood this morning I'm going to vote for it, although I'm very torn.
X
I'm going to give it to Family Remains., not one of my favourites but I felt for the two tortured childen forced to grow up like that, and for Dean's heart-breaking little speech at the end.
X
I vote, The Kid's are All Right. Cute little episode.
However I've always been unhappy that Ben wasn't Dean's son (?)
I think the whole Lisa Ben theme would have been stronger if the child had been his.
Anyway, the changeling srory was interesting and the scene withh the little girl in the car getting pushed into the water, chilling.
Route 666 was awful and the episode can't even be saved by Dean's sex scene, There was absolutely no feeling between Dean and Cassie. Dean's verbal exchanges with the crossroad demons have always been a million times sexier than that whole scene.
Great job summing up why I like Exile on Main St. too. Beautiful Loser was perfect and that montage is one of my favorites. As far as season openers go, I liked it better than Magnificent 7 and Sympathy for the Devil. In fact I like it more the farther we are removed from season 6. Another episode that gets better in the rewatch.
ReplyDelete"Route 666 was awful and the episode can't even be saved by Dean's sex scene, There was absolutely no feeling between Dean and Cassie. Dean's verbal exchanges with the crossroad demons have always been a million times sexier than that whole scene."
Completely agree with this. Someone once accused me of not liking Cassie for fangirl reasons, but I can honestly say that it was the actress. I mean she completely ruined the 4400 for me too. Besides, I love Dean with Lisa and the chemistry felt more real with Dean and a dozen other characters like Casey than it did with Cassie. It's hard to feel anything when the actress is doing her best to impersonate a block of wood. Such a shame!
I didn't absolutely hate CYHiYB although it certainly didn't rise above the bottom of the meh pile for me. Of course I'm not that big a fan of Ben Edlund in general so I'm always in the minority with his episodes. The reason why this episode may join the list is because I think it is as dangerous to the foundation of Supernatural as the previous two. It all comes down to a couple of lines that imply that fairies, brownies, etc are more powerful than demons and angels combined. If the writers ever revisit that idea, SPN is in big trouble. Do you really want the big bad to be fairies? Leprechauns release Satan and Michael? Completely ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteI always write out my votes first without reading anyone else's opinion, so I am always curious to read what others have written afterwards.
ReplyDeleteIt's a nice surprise that you liked EOMS. I didn't think you would have.
I see we agree on most eps this time except for Family Remains and but as I haven't actually seen season seven yet I can't really judge the other one. However episodes with whizz-kid teens in them are a no for me in any Tv Series.
Adam was a mistake and I can remember being absolutely incredulous when I first watched, but if they decided to do it they should have thought up something better than pre-killing him like that.
First Kripke puts the cat amongst the pigeons, and then gives us a complete ant-climax at the end. As I said I'd have preferred Adam to have gone off to Australia and been forgotten about, and maybe we wouldn't have seen him again!
Apart from Adam, it was a poor, poor episode and the Ghouls were wasted as they could have been used in some other episode.
If it wins, I 'll be curious to see what you pick.;)

ReplyDeleteSam: "Get back or I'll kill you. I swear to God." Demon Trucker: "You
won't. You're saving that bullet for someone else." Sam: "You want
to bet."
X
Sam: Dean, are you here? I couldn't find anything in the book. I
don't know how to help you. But I'll keep trying, all right? As long as
you keep fighting. I mean, come on you can't, you can't leave me here
alone with dad, we'll kill each other, you know that. Dean, you've got
to hold on. You can't go, man, not now. We were just starting to be
brothers again. Can you hear me?
So many great quotes in this wonderful episode. It's just so difficult to choose.
I love it when the brothers put their concern for each other above anyone or anything else.
However I honestly thought that at the end of the previous episode there was no hope for the Winchesters and so when Sam still has enough energy to threaten the demon, I was so happy and I have to go for that quote.
Then the other quote by Sam was just so heart-felt.
ELAC
Dean: "Planes crash!
Sam: And apparently clowns kill!"
This is just one of my favourite quotes ever. Don't ask my why it just is and it was delivered so well.:)
Ash: (on Dean admiring his haircut) "All business up front, party in the back."
This is just so cute that I had to put it in, although here too there are many other heavier and more serious quotes.
I quite liked the Roadhouse idea and I think that it would have been useful as a parting base for some other stories now and then; eg, the other hunters gossiping and turning against the Winchesters once they heard of Sam's powers or a good place to introduce new characters passing through for other reasons.
I think they should have kept it a bit longer and seen where it went.
If Jo was the problem they could have sent her of hunting or something.
As for the rest, not one of my favourites eps, although the forever mentioned scene with Sam and the Clown chair is priceless and of course who can forget Dean smashing up the poor Impala.
1. I voted Exile on Main ST.
ReplyDelete2. Hook Man never had a real issue with this one
3.Criss Angel again liked the episode.
4 .Playthings any day of the week over Sex and Violence a horrible episode in a horrible season that had the absurd boohoo comment from Sam that he has been hated on for ever since for .
5 .Not a big fan of either but went for Adventures in Babysitting .
6.And the Kids are all right neither are great episodes but I voted for that episode.
Jump the Shark - I honestly like Exile on Main Street, but Dean's "vision" was such a poorly executed scene that I still cringe thinking about it. Spoiled a perfectly good episode for me. And I know I'm in minority, but I love Jump the Shark. Dean's angst, Sammy's slow slide into darkness, Adam, who even in the ghoul form was for me a very interesting character, especially in his interaction with both and each of of the brothers. Yeah, I love all of the last half of S4.
ReplyDeleteGhostfacers - one of my favourite comedy episodes. I always enjoy getting outside perspective on the Winchesters and even if it was kinda badly placed in the season, I still rewatch it often. The swearing! Corbett! The paradocumentary style! Yeah, love it. Hook Man on the other hand I saw once and have no desire to watch again. Bland and forgettable.
Criss Angel is a Douchebag - I'm not the biggest fan of it, but MM, while had some important worldbuilding aspects, I really don't like. I guess Ruby took too much screen time and aside from her last scene with Dean, was a tad too Mary-sueish for my taste, in this episode at least. CAiaD also had awesome guest stars. I really felt for Jay.
Sex and Violence - not a best episode of the series, but it one cool twist and I loved interactions between the characters in this one - very intense. Playthings is serviceable, but I think stylistic choices, especially the Shining references, were a little bit wasted and while cool, didn't have anything to do with the plot. I guess the MOTW just didn't work for me, for some reason.
Adventures in Babysitting - one of my favourite MOTWs of S7, to be honest. It had it's problems, but Dean is absolutely fantastic in this ep. I didn't hate Krissy and although the Vetalas plot was shaky to say mildly, it had enough good Dean character stuff for me to like it. Family Remains is not that bad, but really uneven. MOTW was good, Dean and Sam were good, the guest stars and their family problems - not good at all. I mostly skip it in my S4 rewatch.
The Kids are Alright - a very solid episode. I always liked Lisa, Ben was the best here of all his appearances in the whole series and the side plot with Lisa's friend was very powerful. Also the only episode in which I can honestly say I liked Ruby (Ruby 1.0, to be exact. Ruby as a whole was at her most fantastic in Lucifer Rising, but LR is brilliant on every front). Route 666 on the other hand... no. Just no.
I can never understand how anyone can hate on Sam, for unpleasant things have been said by Dean too, usually in moments of great stress or while both are under the influence of spells and things.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is that whatever comes out of their mouths, they love each other, and have and would again die for each other.
I agree but I think with Sam it is a whole combination of things and being Season 4 it was a comment that seem to come out of nowhere and seeming have Sam dismiss Dean's hell ? it was just a no no .
ReplyDeleteJump the Shark, Ghostfacers, Malleus Maleficarum, Playthings, Adventures in Babysitting, The Kids are Alright.
ReplyDeleteQuotes:
In My Time of Dying (My most watched episode)
Sam: “Dean, are you here? I
couldn't find anything in the book. I don't know how to help you. But I'll keep
trying, all right? As long as you keep fighting. I mean, come on you can't, you
can't leave me here alone with dad, we'll kill each other, you know that. Dean,
you've got to hold on. You can't go, man, not now. We were just starting to be
brothers again. Can you hear me?”
Sam: “Listen to me, Bobby, if there's only one
working part, that's enough. We're not just going to give up on...” Bobby: “Okay.
You got it.”
Dean: “Come on, Sam... Go find
some Hoodoo priest to lay some mojo on me, I'll be fine.” ... Sam: “Look, if
the doctors won't do anything, then we'll have to, that's all. I don't know,
find some Hoodoo priest and lay some mojo on him.” (liked when Sam repeats Deans words without knowing what he was saying).
Everybody Loves a Clown (every time i read title, i think: not everybody loves clown, i don't love them)
Dean: “I know what you're
thinking Sam. Why did it have to be clowns?” Sam: “Oh, give me a break.” Dean:
“You didn't think I remember, do you? Come on, you still bust out crying when
you see Ronald McDonald on the television.” Sam: “At least I'm not afraid of
flying.” Dean: “Planes crash!” Sam: “And apparently clowns kill.”
Dean: "Dude, I'm ok! I'm ok! Ok. I swear the next person who ask me if i'm ok, i'm gonna start throwing punches. These are your issues, quite dumping them on me."
Yes, I remember that comment, but Sam was under the Siren's spell so that's how it should have been seen.
ReplyDeleteApart from that particular comment, Dean himself admitted that Hell had done things to him and changed him.
The problem is that Sam was written to play the "demonic bad" brother, as it were and Dean the "angelic good" one.
None of that is Sam's fault, nor Dean's either, but some people just use that excuse to say hurtful things about Sam. :(
Actually I think both brothers' Hell experiences should have been explored more for it was a terrible period for both, in two different ways.
Dean became a torturor under Alastair's tuition and poor Sam the eternal victim under Lucifer.
Aww thanks! You didn't need to go through the trouble, I'm sorry! I pulled up the synopses on TV.com episode guide and did a find for the titles. The descriptions usually sent the light bulb off in my head (thankfully!)
ReplyDeletePS. Adam was awful.xD
Thanks! I was using TV.com ep guide. But I still felt like I should know all the names off the top of my head. I don't feel *quite* so bad now.
ReplyDeleteVoted:
ReplyDeleteExile on Main St. - not a huge fan of this episode, but it's still definitely better than Jump the Shark. I really don't like the idea of the third Winchester brother. I mean, I HATE the idea.
Hook Man - just a vote against Ghostfacers.
Malleus Maleficarum - I actually loved it. It had a strong one-off storyline and pushed the overall season mytharc forward with what I believe was the first mention about Lilith ever, with Ruby saving Dean and revealing to him that all demon's were once human. Also, love Dean's hate towards witches.
Playthings - I don't get why people dislike it, I love the episode. The horror-like feel about it is great. The story might not be very sophisticated, but I love the atmosphere. Plus it had the "poke her with the stick" line. Besides, why would I vote for an episode, where the boys argue and want to kill each other?
Family Remains - again, I don't get the hate towards this episode. For me it was the perfect distraction from this whole heaven and hell drama from episodes 9 and 10 (loved both too, btw). The story about those kids living in the wall really got me. I also loved the boy who played Danny. The hell talk from the end might have been pushed into a next episode, because it was almost exactly like the end of Heaven and Hell, but it was still emotional.
The Kids Are Alright - just like Dead in the Water and Are You There, God..., this episode shouldn't even have to be fighting for a wild card. It's Supernatural at its best. I LOVE every little tiny aspect of it. Ben was beyond awesome back when he was small and a little Dean copy. He kinda got whinier in season 6. LOVE the changelings, creepy and scary and awesome.
You;re not in the minority. I preferred Exile on Main Street
ReplyDeleteI was a huge fan of Lisa, Ben, and RoboSam so that helps a lot with this episode. Mostly though I really did not like season 5 and so to be done with the Apocalypse and moving forward was an automatic win for me. Domestic Dean never bothered me either because I thought it was interesting to see that life juxtaposed with hunting. I'm one of the few who wish they had explored that theme a bit more.
ReplyDeleteGlad to here it. I thought it was well done and watching Dean navigate a whole new life, especially in the montage was awesome. The only joy I get out of Jump the Shark winning here is that it will be crushed in the actual contest. I hate that episode.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to SpoilerTV. Thanks for sharing your opinions with us. Can't wait to hear what you think about the next set.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why other people didn't like Playthings but as for me, I had already seen it before. A kid is haunted by the ghost of another kid. The ghost kills people. A brother jumps into water to save the kid from drowning but cannot actually rescue until an older relative gives up their life to appease the ghost. It's Dead in the Water 2 and the sequel is no where near as good as the original. The original had an interesting story as to why the ghost was killing. Maggie did not. DitW had Sheriff Jake and his phenomenal monologues, Amy Acker, and Lucas. The best guest star in Playthings was the butler guy and only because he was funny. Dead in the Water had a tremendous tie between Lucas and Dean, which is the only reason why that episode made me obsessed with Supernatural. To see Dean empathize with Lucas because he had gone through the same thing humanized the ghost story. I barely remember Maggie's name from Playthings; I have no idea who the daughter was. She had almost no role in the story at all and definitely no emotional tie to the brothers. In all honesty I have no idea why they made Playthings. There is no other pair of episodes so close in story line as these two. It's not even like the episode was far enough away from Dead in the Water that there was a chance people wouldn't compare the two. All I can guess is that the writers decided to play that stupid game fans do where if it happens to one brother it must happen to the other. The whole episode, except drunk Sam, seemed like a waste of time and a disservice to the awesomeness of Dead in the Water.
ReplyDeleteJump The Shark, Hookman, MM, Playthings, Adventures In Babysitting, and The Kids Are Alright. I didn't care for any of these episodes all that much but liked them more than the rest.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hate Adam. I don't see why the show had to go there though. Especially since now he's still stuck in Hell and that bugs me. He should have stayed dead the first time. At least that time he was Heaven. But then, Michael wouldn't have had a vessel.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Ghostfacers. It was a waste. I liked the guys in Hell House, but I didn't ever want an episode like that, especially with that kind of filming.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE Ben's drama episodes but don't care for his kind of humor. The comedy episodes I shrink away from.
ReplyDeleteProbably the most risky and pointless move to make.
ReplyDeleteYeah Sam was under the Siren spell I don't understand how Sam can get blamed for that.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate Adam in himself either. It wasn't his fault that he was born and I would be curious to know where he ended up. Maybe they will mention it next season.
ReplyDeleteI agree, however, that it was a silly thing to cook up in the first place. They obviously just did it for a shock effect and the fact that he was already dead even before the episode started annoyed me.
As for the vessel thing, I often wonder what would have happened had Dean become Michael's vessel instead of Adam. Maybe he could have defeated Lucifer and put him back in the Cage, leaving Castiel to resurrect Sam's body as he did with Bobby.
I have always hated it that Sam had to take all the punishment for the Apocalypse while everyone else got off lightly, although they all had a hand in causing it.
Exile on Main St - Unpopular opinion,I know, but I liked this episode.Jump the Shark on the other hand was nothing special.Generally,I didn't mind Adam, but I think his introduction was a little unnecessary.I don't think they had this whole plan with Michael back then,so why?Plus, the poor kid is not stuck in Lucifer's cage with two archangels and no one seems to remember.Feel free to find a way to save him anytime, writers.
ReplyDeleteHook Man - The Ghostfacers were fine in Hell House, had some good scenes, great lines("Sweet Lord of the Rings" is an all time favorite of mine). Why did they have to drag it?!Anyway,Hook Man wins by default.
Malleus Maleficarum - Both episodes were good,if a little forgettable, but I liked the story like with the witches better.
Sex and Violence - I really liked the FBI guy/Siren in this one.Playthings wasn't bad either.
Adventures in Babysitting - The plot wasn't anything special, but the girl was great!Family Remains,on the other hand,I had to look up,which is saying something.
The Kids are Alright - How can you take an episode seriously when the bad "guy" is a killer truck?!Also,I simply can't stand Cassie! And finally,The Kids are Alright is an awesome episode!
Quotes
In My Time of Dying:
- Dean: "God,I feel like I'm at a slumber party."
- Tessa: "What are you, some kind of New Agey guy?"
Dean: "You see me messing with crystals and listening to Yanni?"
Everybody loves a clown:
- Ash: "All business up front...and party in the back."
- Sam: "Well, before you go stabbing things into Cooper,we're gonna wanna make damn sure it's him."
Dean: "You're such a stickler for details,Sammy."
its weird, i can't do it with any other show but with supernatural i somehow just know what every episode is by its name.
ReplyDeleteits one of my all time faves. i rewatch it all the time, one of of my most watched episodes id say after mystery spot
ReplyDeletesome easy but others hard, not because i love both episodes but because both were just average episodes.
ReplyDeletevoted: exile on main street. not the two best episodes that have ever been made but i think adam was a bit ridiculous
ghostfacers. although some hate them i love them and think they are hilarious so this was an easy choice
maleus maleficarum. for one i've seen it way more times than criss angel but i also find its far more memorable and i just enjoy this episode way more.
playthings: again, sex and violence, like criss angel is a douchebag, falls into the section of season 4 episodes that i just never really watch. its not that they're particularly bad, i just don't find them anything special. playthings was the first episode i ever saw, although i didn't know it was supernatural until i was going back and watching seasons 1 and 2 for the first time and realised i'd already seen this episode. i also just really liked it. and sam being drunk was funny
family remains: 2 episodes i don't really care about. i voted family remains because i remember adventures in babysitting better coz it was more recent and i wasn't such a fan so at this moment i prefer family remains. and the creepy brother and sister were pretty creepy
the kids are alright: well for one, route 666 is absolutely shocking so that gave TKAA an easy advantage. but i also love this episode. i think its brilliant, the kids are creepy, changelings were awesome monsters and ben as mini dean and lisa were all awesome. a thoroughly enjoyable episode
Finally I finished quotes for Eveyrbody Loves a Clown. Here they are:
ReplyDeleteHonorable Mention - Girl: "Mommy, Daddy, they shot my clown."Dean: "You wanted to give me a little help here." Sam: "No, not really."Sam: "Dean, I cannot believe you told Papazian about the homicidal phantom clown." Dean: "I told him an urban legend about a homicidal phantom clown. I never said it was real."10. Sam: "Say something alright? Hell say anything. Aren't you angry? Don't you want revenge? But all you do is sit out here all day long buried underneath this damn car." Dean: "Revenge huh?" Sam: "Yeah." Dean: "Sounds good. Hey, you got any leads on where the demon is. You making heads or tails of any of dad's research cuz I sure ain't. You know what, when we do finally find it…Oh no wait, like you said, the Colt's gone. But I'm sure you've figured out another way to kill it. We’ve got nothing Sam. Nothing, okay. So the only thing I can do is I can work on the car." 9. Dean: "Was there an article in Demon Hunter's Quarterly that I missed? I mean who are you? How do you know about all of this?"8. Dean: "I can't believe we keep talking about clowns."7. Dean: "That whole uh I don't want to go back to school thing. Were you just…were you just saying that to Cooper or were you, you know, saying it? Sam?" Sam: "I don't know." Dean: "You don't know? Well I thought that once the demon was dead and the fat lady sings that you were going to take off, head back to Wussy State." Sam: "I'm having second thoughts." 6. Dean: "Dude, I'm okay. I'm okay, okay. I swear the next person who asks me if I'm okay, I'm going to start throwing punches. These are your issues. Quit dumping them on me." Sam: "What are you talking about?" Dean: "I just think it's really interesting this sudden obedience you have to dad. It's like oh what would dad want me to do? Sam you spent your entire life slugging it out with that man. I mean, hell you picked a fight the last time you ever saw him. And now that he's dead, now you want to make it right? Well I'm sorry Sam but you can't. It's too little. Too late." 5. Dean: "This is humiliating. I feel like a freaking soccer mom." 4. Dean: "Dude, your blind man hearing is out of control." 3. Sam: "You were right." Dean: "About what?" Sam: "About me and dad. I'm sorry that the last time I was with him I tried to pick a fight. I'm sorry that I spent most of my life angry at him. I mean for all I know, he died thinking that I hate him. So you're right. What I'm doing right now. It is too little; it's too late. I miss him man and I feel guilty as hell and I'm not alright. Not at all but neither are you. That much I know. I'll let you get back to work."2. Dean: "Oh and get this, I mentioned the Bunker Brothers circus in '81 and their uh evil clown apocalypse.1. Dean: "Planes crash." Sam: "And apparently clowns kill."
I'm slowly but surely revamping my personal episode ranking for Supernatural. In My Time of Dying is up in the top 10 right now. All around well-done story.
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness there are 149 episodes. It's not like a show with just 22. No one should feel bad about not remembering the titles, especially when some are so similar or in seasons which don't as much of a rewatch. I still sometimes get Family Matters and Family Remains mixed up. It causes quite the confusion since one I liked and the other I despise.
ReplyDeleteI loved most of Edlund's early episodes. Some I think really are SPN classics. But season 5-6 he was mostly miss for me. My Edlund score card will be much different from yours because I tend to think his dramas drag on too much.
ReplyDeleteAwesome episodes - Simon Said, Nightshifter, Hollywood Babylon, Bad Day at Black Rock, Monster Movie, Wishful Thinking, The End, Abandon All Hope, Hello Cruel World, How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters
Middle episodes - Malleus Maleficarum, On the Head of a Pin, The Devil You Know, The French Mistake
Blech episodes - My Bloody Valentine, Clap Your Hands if You Believe, Repo Man, Reading is Fundamental
Awful, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Episodes - Ghostfacers, The Third Man, The Man Who Would be King
Yeah, mine is definitely different than your list. Some of my worst are in your best, and some of your worst are in my best episodes. Different tastes.
ReplyDeleteExile on Main Street - While I didn't like Soulless Sam (his mannerisms remind me of a bad time in my life), I loved the Soulless story arc, especially how rewarding Like A Virgin was (HUG!)... that wouldn't have happened without this ep setting up the wrongness.
ReplyDeleteGhostfacers - Awesome episode, especially for me since I had been a big fan of Ghost Hunters before I discovered Supernatural!
Malleus Maleficarum - I'm not a huge fan of either, so this was close.
Playthings - I just all around like this ep, nice mystery (creepy dolls are creepy!), great setting (I LOVE that pool) and a good dose of angst! Especially like the timing when the boys save the mom after they've supposedly left - well set up & shot.
Family Remains - Nice and creepy, with a non-supernatural twist, and it's a break from the demon blood story line. While I think season 4 was brilliant, and essential to the story line, watching the brother's relationship fall apart strikes some chords with me & it is a hard season to watch.
The Kids are All Right - Gotta love Mini-Dean! I hold out hope that eventually (many, many seasons from now) Dean will end up reuniting with Lisa & Ben... I think that having their memories wiped essentially allows them to be put on hold, and brought back when the boys finally get their happy ending.
A Dean and Lisa reunion is my hope too. Dean doesn't have to give up hunting. I have faith that Lisa and he could make it work. If I can't have that then I want a spin-off series with either a pre-death Rufus and Bobby or a Hunter Junior series (hey that sounds like the CW right). This would be where all my favorite kid PiP's decide to be hunters after Dean and Sam saved their lives. Michael from Something Wicked and Kat from Asylum would be in the group. I'm good if Ben is there too as long as it doesn't tear Dean apart with guilt.
ReplyDeleteQuotes:
ReplyDeleteIn My Time of Dying:
Let me just say I ADORE this episode. One of my favourites and by that I mean the exclusive, shortened to the maximum list of my favourites.
honorable mentions:
Dean: Dude, I full on Swazyed that mother!
Bobby: There's nothing to fix. The frame's a pretzel, the engine's ruined... there's barely any parts worth salvaging!
Sam: Listen to me, Bobby: If there's only one working part, that's enough. We're not just going to give up on...
Dean: I've done everything you've ever asked me, everything. I've
given everything I've ever had. Now you're just going to sit there and
watch me die? What the hell kind of father are you?
2nd place:
John: You shouldn't have had to say that to me. I should've been saying that
to you. I put too much on your shoulders. I made you grow up too
fast. You took care of Sammy, you took care of me. You did that. And you
didn't complain, not once. I just want you to know that I am so proud
of you.
Winner:
John: I want you to watch out for Sammy, ok?
Dean: Yeah dad, you know I will. You're scaring me.
John: Don't be scared, Dean.
Everybody Loves a Clown:
Just one:
Sam: At least I'm not afraid of flying.
Dean: Planes crash!
Sam: And apparently, clowns kill.
I'd love a Bobby & Rufus spinoff! It could even take place during the "Supernatural Years" because I doubt Bobby spent the whole series in his kitchen answering phones.(my thought is that he probably did some of that, but really ramped it up as a way to stay in the game during S5).
ReplyDeleteSupernatural TNG would be fun... or maybe the Adventures of Samuel Colt...
I agree, I think Lisa & Dean could work out a way to keep hunting (especially with a Soulful Sam helping). My thoughts are that since they've killed off so many Alphas, eventually the monster population could diminish to a point where Hunting could be a part time job, leaving Sam & Dean time to have families etc.
When I *first* started getting into online fandom....ugh...backin the 90s... I joined a mailing list for a show called Forever Knight. I was constantly astounded because these people knew episode titles, directors, and writers off the top of their heads. I could tell you the story of the ep but hadn't ever bothered to read the credits. :-)
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean you will prove yourself a kindhearted soul either give us a single page with link to all the quote nomination pages? So we can find them easily as we catch up?
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a punishment, it was a sacrifice. Sam chose to give up his life to save the world.
ReplyDeleteAlready did. It's at the top under the explanation paragraph and above the polls. It's called Season 1 Quotes Nomination page. Click on that and you will see all the forms for season 1. I will make one for season 2 as we get more episodes up.
ReplyDeleteSam's "one moving part" line is one of the few times I have ever gotten teary eyed at a TV show. It was so perfect and so encapsulated the brother relationship for me. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHa! It's sad that after such a deluge of fabulous lines and moments from In My Time of Dying, there isn't near as much to hang on to in ELaC. It sure made coming up with the quotes faster though.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Thanks!
ReplyDeletehehe, sorry, I projected my own extreme dislike of CYHiYB onto your statement. :) I understand now what you meant; and yes, introducing all-powerful beings is super-dangerous. Definitely why they've never been mentioned since (except for Dean in PPMM reminding us all that Leprechaun's are deadly, haha).
ReplyDeleteI won't be one to defend CYHiYB, from the content to the hideous title. In fact, my guess is that the reasons you didn't like it would mirror mine.
ReplyDeleteRight, but it would have been an even more powerful sacrifice if Dean who had stared it all and Castiel who had let Sam out of the panic room on purpose so that he could free Lucifer, also threw themselves into the Cage sharing Sam's wonderful imprisonment with two pissed archangels.
ReplyDeleteI guess we see the character in a fundamentally different way. Castiel opened a door. He didn't put Sam on a leash and force him upon pain of death to go to Ruby, drink gallons of demon blood, and beat the crap out of Dean. Those were all things Sam chose to do, because he's a character with agency and free will, not a child or an imbecile to be led around by the nose. Likewise, he later chose to be a hero in order to fix his mistakes, and save the world. He didn't want his brother or Castiel to die. He chose to save them too. I think that makes Sam powerful and selfless and brave. If you prefer to see him as a perpetual victim, that's your choice I guess, but I like to see him differently.
