The second season of NBC musical drama series Smash will feature a second musical alongside the Marilyn Monroe show within the show "Bombshell."

According to the chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt, a rival musical will surface and executive producers and music composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are currently searching for composers and lyricists to write new tunes for the competing show. Some of the cast members of "Bombshell" will even jump ship to the other title.

  1. That's one way for both Ivy and Karen to get a chance to shine. So will our existing songwriters be writing new material for Bombshell, while it's already on Broadway? Some songs we haven't seen? Will we have to go through the whole process from the beginning, or will the new musical be post-tryouts?

  2. This sounds like a good direction - it opens up the "universe" so to speak. And if this leads to less focus on the very unoriginal "good girl vs bad girl fights for lead-story" then I'm all for it. I liked it when they made Ivy and Karen more like frenemies rather than just flat out rivals. Ivy has become too much of a one dimentional stereotype for my liking.

  3. IVY is a stereotype?! Jesus, Karen is the stereotype if there's one in this show...

  4. Well, this is going to be great I am looking forward to next season now. The idea od another show is only going to make Marilyn even harder for people to notice but hopefully the show will get some praise. I've been wanting to see Ivy shine more so maybe she'll be apart of the other musical.

  5. More actual Broadway stars and less "trying" to be Marilyn sounds great to me. The original songs so far have been pretty fantastic, I really hope the second musical lets them keep up the good work!

  6. They need to focus in the "making a musical·" plot and forget boring private life plots (Julia's family,ewww...).

  7. As the season progressed I thought they made her character more and more like the typical bad girl you would expect to find in a drama like this. Initally I found her more intriguing with her mommy-issues and insecurities. It looked like we would get a more layered portrayal, and I'm disappointed with the developement. So yes, I thought she became more stereotypical as time went on.

That is not to say that Karen isn't a stereotype, cause she certainly is. But she's been set up the same way since the beginning. I wouldn't mind seeing more layers to her character as well, though :)
