  1. Two words.DAMN TARA.This girl is like a cockroach!!!!!Even if every single character gets killed she will still BE THERE @#$%^&*(

  2. I still say turning Tara is the most contrived nonsensical event on True Blood ever and if you consider all the other events, that is saying something!

Last year we get Lafayette saying he's done with vampires (again) and Sookie dismissing Eric and Bill saying she's done, and then they flip the switch and decide to turn Tara? Bleh.
Pam was as fun as ever though!

I liked the Bill and Eric wrap up though. The Authority promises to be very entertaining this season.

The Steve Newlin thing was a way corny to me, but this is True Blood after all.

Queen Jessica? Fun I guess, and Little Red Riding Ho' never looked so good. I'm not sure I want to watch True Blood: Co-ed Edition though.... Actually I'm sure I don't.

The Bellefleur's stoyline are of very little interest to me... Andy being Andy is expected I guess and Terry and Arlelne stories rarely entertain me.

Sam Merlotte dealing with pack justice could be fun.

Jason and Hoyt at odds will get old fast, but maybe that will get resolved sooner rather than later?
I wonder how Hoyt talking about history repeating will play into the season. That seems like a very obvious bit of foreshadowing to me.

The best parts of this premiere for me were the looming dark cloud that is King Russel Egerton and the Vampire Authority. If we get mostly Bill and Eric's excellent adventures with the Vampire Authority or Sookie dealing with Russel this could be a good year. If we get more of Tara the newbie vamp and the dysfunctional Bellefleurs this season could go downhill fast!

  3. who is feeding people to Russell? Fantastic beginning

..little confusing the introduction of Erik ..vampire sister very disturbing .for my taste vampire incest thing very hard to swallow

  5. I really liked it, Pam was the highlight for me almost everything she said was funny

  6. Maybe I'm too jaded from Game of Thrones, but this quasi-incest did not even get a second thought from me I guess...
Firstly, it's not really incest even...Their only connection is through their maker, Godric. Since when you are turned you are "reborn" a vampire, the "child" of your maker, Eric referred to his Godric's other "child" as his sister despite being unrelated to her.
Secondly, I can't see incest being a very big deal for vampires even if true siblings did turn. Hyper-sexualized beings that do not believe in any religion or rhetoric and do not conform to societal standards. It just seems like incest would be accepted without a thought to me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was wondering that too...
Is it just someone that Russell glamoured?
I do wonder if it is someone we already know though because they made a point to not show his face. that makes me think that the reveal would mean something.

  8. Good start was that really Eric's sister like from his viking days. That's awesome Tara a vampire she hates Pam now that Pam is here maker she can tell Tara what to do. Ha she is going to hate that but i think she will be a bad ass vampire.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's not actual incest though. If there's no DNA shared, there's nothing really wrong with it. They were just made by the same guy. Plus, vampires are kind of incestual by nature. Many makers sleep with their children at some point as well, if they chose to turn them.

I like Eric and Sookie together but for now I'm fine with watching a great Eric storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  10. His "sister" isn't actually related to him, they were just both turned by Godric. Godric has probably turned lots of people.

  11. Good start, and liked the flow in from last season, but really am not psyched that instead of killing off some of the characters from this top heavy, bloated cast, they just added more... Of course if the writing is good, I'll eat my words, but with this many characters/storylines to flesh out and give entertaining and worthwhile development to it's far more likely that many things will be lost... Even if they just finally wrote off the tiresome Tara character I would've been happy as she really had just gotten tiresome to me, but my hope is that they'll use this to reboot the character into something interesting and not just the dour angry, bitchy one she has always been. I'll just hope for now and see what Alan Ball's final season as showrunner will be like.

  12. I'm still shaking my head. I just have no words for how stupid things have gotten in Bon Temps. How can they just keep piling things up while hardly ever anything gets resolved? This show gives me a headache. My bright spot was Pam. I guess I wasn't the only who was hoping that Tara was gone for good (even though I knew since the end of last season exactly how this would play out). I just want to see Chris Meloni already because that's the only reason I'm bothering to tune in this season.

  13. I really think people are a tad too critical of this show. Yes, I know we're supposed to critique everything with an open mind and nothing should get a pass but the writers on this show have been upfront from the beginning. Since Season 1 it has been about campy goofy writing that never took itself seriously and never cared if it was spot on perfect.

I for one absolutely love the show. Always have and always will. It's a guilty pleasure I'm not ashamed of in the least. I laugh consistently:

    - "We fight like siblings; we f*ck like champions"
    - "Can you guy's keep it down New Orleans is only 60 miles away!"

Just a few examples. In just this one episode.

On occasion there are a few to many characters but I feel like the writing is always consistent and the storylines that get the most time are the ones we care about most.

    - Bill and Eric bromance.
    - Sookie's storyline.
    - Jason/Jessica.
    - Lafayette
    - Pam

    and hopefully:

    - The Vampire Authority
    - Russell Edgington
    - Steve Newlin.
    - Vampire Tara

You know what this show's not?

    - Game of Thrones
    - Boardwalk Empire
    - Breaking Bad
    - Mad Men

And it has never tried to be. When people compare this show to those shows they are first of all - an idiot. And secondly blindly led into a show they obviously know nothing about. True Blood does what it does extremely well and every episode is completely entertaining.

The season premiere did exactly what season premieres do: Set up storyline's for the rest of the season. Anyone expecting anything "climactic" in season premieres should watch more of them. It's job is to continue storyline's from the previous season and set up new one's for the current season.

I've always been a diehard fan of the show, and always will be. It's been one of my favorite shows since it originally premiered and it will continue to be till it ends.

  14. O ok that is less creepy since they are not really siblings.

  15. Tara is back?? Ok, that's it. Won't watch this series any more.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ha!
I may be stopping too honestly.
I loathe the Tara character and all the side stories more each year. If this year is interesting to me I will keep watching probably honestly..... but if they spend too much time as usual on non-central characters and arcs I could easily quit....

Disqus generic email template..I know your point & in certain I am agree with you but the word INCEST no matter in witch contest is deliver is to kinki for me vampires do anything to continue there legacy & in some cultures is (normal) ..but ..MMMM or (UH) is a very deprave situacion

  18. Hopefully someone will make a Fan-Edit only with Jessica, Pam, Eric, Russell and some other interesting characters. :D

Someone managed to condense S1 of Walking Dead to a few hours, why not the same for this series.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe Steve Newlin? Don´t know, it was the only person I could come up with that made a little sence. I think it must be somebody we know.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If Lafayette would have used the razor on his wrists I don´t think I would have cared. I loved season 1 Lafayette, but he is quickly going down the same road as Tara. I just do not care for that girl. I know her story is gonna be big this season, and I just really really don´t want to see another minute of it.

I also agree on Andy and Terry´s storys. Andy and Terry are great, wonderful background characters who pops up in Merlottes. They are NOT suppose to have their own storylines.

Looooved Pam, so I´ll keep watching, just for her. She is so damn good.

Eric and Bill´s storyline seems interesting, but I honestly wish that it was taking place in Bon Temp, so we would not have two (three....six?) totally seperate storylines.

Jessica and Jason is good entertainment. Steve Newlin doesn´t do anything for me.

Alcide and Sams storyline looks good. I hope that will be interesting.

  21. I would not have missed Lafayette as much as been annoyed that they brought Tara back as a vamp and then to have Lafayette off himself.
Keep her alive but let me die kind of hypocrisy thing. Thankfully they did not go that route!Hopefully Bill and Eric will make it back to  Bon Temps or Sookie (and Pam please) will make her way to them. Now that Sookie owes Pam one (plus fixing her and her maker's relationship) They have a way to "force" Sookie to go to Bill and Eric and help them.Way too many storylines on this show.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I got to see this ep, but now will not have to subscribe to HBO, will just wait for the DVD.  Was not impressed at all and some of the acting was very lame, the Sookie crying over Tara and can't they just let Tara die already.

    ReplyDelete
  23. all the people down on tara...for petes sake its only the 1st ep....good grief..... if your going to complain that much hell dont watch...shhhhh

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's not Tara's first episode, I've been down on her for 4 years... .
Her turning is but the next step in my dislike of the character. I actually hope it improves her character since it has been stagnant and annoying for 4 years even after last year seemed like a start to something new. Same old angry at everything Tara. Not enjoying specific aspects or characters is not the same as not enjoying the series as a whole. It's pretty ridiculous to think that people who like a series are not allowed to find anything negative about that series. Everyone has the right to comment any way they chose on here as long as it is not a personal attack another commenter. However, personal attacks on a series or on characters are perfectly acceptable! XD.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have to agree with Darque on this. Tara is an awful character, who would have been much better off as a background character from the start. Instead she got these silly storylines that is not worth watching and now it is to the point where a lot of people just want to get rid of her.

Luckily the show also has characters like Jessica, Pam and Eric, so we keep tuning in every week, despite the hate for Tara.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I disagree. I think because, "Demons Run In Families/You have another kind of demon in inside you." (quoted by Miss Jeanette...and when you think about Tara must have a certain kind of energy for Mary-Anne to be intrigued with her) is actually true and therefor she is the ONLY Demon-Vampire that we have ever met!

But I give the writers stones on not making her happy vampire yet, and to show us something 'different' and darker in the world of vampires...Don't get me wrong, I want to be able to get to a place where she can have a good time again, but more over there this great dynamic of Sookie's promise to Pam in conjunction to Pam's relationships with Eric, that most surely will surely open the doors for both characters (Pam and Tara) to develop.

I would rather have her be a weird vampire, than a whinny raging ghost, and unlike most people I love the way Tara has been written in a juxtaposition to Sookie and how they keep ending back in the same places.

I think the truth is all of main characters (especially the ones who didn't know they had abilities) are all caught up in their families wars, wars that have been in Bon Temps (and elsewhere) a long long time (and that makes it hard to blame any of them, because it is other supernatural beings that seek them out)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I liked the episode, but enough with the boring storylines, please!

True Blood is very entertaining because of characters like Eric, Pam, Lafayette, Jessica, Jason... And those are the storylines I want to see. I couldn't care less about Terry, the sheriff that after 4 seasons i can't even remember the name and stupid Tara. I wanna see vamps doing vamp stuff and being badasses and managing to survive in some ridiculous way that i will fully apreciate in all the ridiculousness. Oh, and naked Eric, thank you very much.

  28. Only watching for Pam now, everyone else is boring/out stayed their welcome.

  29. My Comments From STV Forum:

Well I have to say I really liked the first episode of season 5! -Lots of surprises!

Tara Turned by Pam: I still think Tara may actually be a type of demon, as hinted back in season 1 by Miss Jeanette (Demons run in families/you're another kind of Demon). Beyond that there's the unusual circumstance of her death that could show us a different kind of Vampire this season. Most people don't like Tara, but I have always liked the way she was written in juxtaposition to Sookie, as they still end up in the same place time and time again (fate), I also love that despite all of the horrible things that have happened to her, she still wants to protect Sookie. I think this story line will be useful to develop both Tara and Pam further...

Jesus Body is Missing! -I have no idea what to think about that. But I wonder if he really died, or if he protected himself, or if there's something special about 'death' sanrios with Demons? --Otherwise I wonder if his body could be used as/for something????

Sookie's all grown up! -It's sort of refreshing to see a rather strong, honest, down to earth Sookie. There is a resilience in this first episode that I have never seen in Sookie before, and I like it! -I thought the flashback was touching too, because they want us to remember Tara has been "protecting" and doing her best to make other's accept Sookie for most of their lives and I think their relationship is highly important...

Steve Newlin: A Gay Vampire American! --It's clear that he basically lied to Jason about a lot of things, especially the fact that he can glamour so well! --I have an idea on whom his maker is, but I can't say, because we haven't been introduced to her yet...but there's a possible connection to season two that makes me think so.

Jessica: I love how she has stepped into her own and is starting to know how to use her relationships to her advantage, but I truly feel bad for Jason.

So what was that Holly was spouting out to Arlene about last season about (magical) rehabilitation and taking control of her life!? Clearly, even if she has become a better person, her kids seem nuts!

The Ghosts are after a specific sect of Patrick's military division! (So fun to see Scott Foley!) --I like the idea of this story line! Terry is obviously scared to death about the prospect of things from Iraq following them home...but I have to wonder if Patrick's right and that even "Rene" (which may be a ghost who possessed Drew Marshell?), was apart of that?

Eric and Bill...and Nora! Nora seems like an interesting character! -But I love how Bill and Eric have just accepted their fate together at this point....but I am really interested how Sookie figures back into it....

Russell Edgington is back! - I would think the Authority would want to do something about that! I speculate that the scene with with dragging and splattered blood was Russell feeding...But I imagine it will take him some time to heel...I still wonder who got him out...I have a couple guesses...the person who I can't name, or maybe Pam...

Oh and Yuck!---Cannibal Werwolves is just gross!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think you make a great point that the element of ridiculousness is what sets it apart from most everything else, but I also think there is also a deep serious element of exploring xenophobia at the same time, and it's the contrast that makes it so unique! It's def a show where you don't really ask plausibility, but let it go, because in all honestly I think most people have problems, and struggles, and what not, and this show is fun way to put that back into perspective, because most the time I think, well my life's not so bad after all. It's fun and crazy, but personal and dynamic. I always look forward to it every summer!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Cannibalism is not that uncommon in the animal world. At least not for mothers eating their dead cubs or pups etc...

I know most of the big cats will do that, and wild dogs and wolves too.. .even some domesticated dogs I think do it.....  Ball was probably trying to get a gross out moment, but I have watched so many documentaries I actually just ASSUMED it was what his mom meant when she said things had to be done. XD

    ReplyDelete
  32. Obviously it's not or else so many vampires wouldn't be romantically involved with their makers.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I still only care about Tara and Pam.

Jessica has turned into a character that I can't believe they even waste screentime on.
But hopefully I will stop absolutely loathing Eric's character if him and Bill continue this storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  34.  well shes just playing it the way they write it..so if u want to complain, do it to the people thats writing....the script.

    ReplyDelete
  35. To be fair, I have never said anything about Rutina Wesley I don't think....

It could be the writers, the make-up artists, the lighting crew, the directors, the wardrobe department, maybe even  craft services on the set.... everybody except Runtina Wesley and it would not change my opinion of the character. Although after a couple season actors do tend to make the character their own more than just the writers' creation or the director's vision.Tara has bothered me since season 1... and she went down hill from there.

That is not to say I will not love the actress on the next series or movie I see her in.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL! Ha! I know what you mean, but I guess I should rephrase it to Necro-Cannibalism! -I mean he has been buried in dirt already, I wouldn't consider him "fresh" anymore...I think it's just weird because they are WOLVES, and usually Wolves go after live prey and don't eat their own...but I also know that the novels present the Pelts as Were-Coyotes, or Foxes?! --That I would understand more since those species tend to be scavengers. -Don't get me wrong I think it's sort interesting because it again is something sudo opposite of Maryanne, but for what ever reason it got under my skin and gave me the willies! XD

  37. I agree re Tara. It seems that they created her character in season 1 (in as much as book Tara is pretty much a character on the sidelines that is hardly mentioned frmo one book to the next) and really haven't known quite what to do with her ever since. Turning her into a vampire does seem like a rather lame way to give her a plot this season.  I liked season 1 Tara, but she has been getting less adn less likable as the seasons went on.  Maybe I will like her as a vampire, but right now it smacks of desperation.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Think about this way.

Tara is African American ('black'), severely abused physically and emotionally had an unloving family, let alone the racism factor of living in the south, she is high energized, and really never went looking for trouble...she only wanted to help the people in her life..She understood from a young age how dangerous life can be.

Sookie is Cacasion America ("white"), had a loving family (especially her grandmother), is emotionally abused by an uncontrolled ability to hear people's thoughts, and isn't accepted by anyone. Sookie some how had stayed rather naive, despite this, but she chooses to engage with Bill and others, because she only wanted to help the people in her life....(although really Bill went to find Sookie...)

Tara has been associated with "demons" and Sookie associated with "fea"...Supernatural creatures keep coming after them both. Both have yet to really understand themselves and from what they come from (physiological super natural origins), and both overly judge the other and have 'do as I say, not as I do' policies'. When they go off in different directions/being on the flip side of an issue, they still end up crossing paths (fate). And although Sookie has helped saved Tara, Tara has ALWAYS stood up and saved Sookie. These characters have some opposite personality traits, but really they are more similar, than not. Nothing is ever black and white and that's why I think the way they have been written so well in contrast to each other. You may think Tara is pointless, but she's not. She's Sookie's protector and they both need each other to survive all the horrible uncontrollable stuff that keeps coming their way. Their relationship is the one things constant to whom they are and I think it's a special one....I think they have a special bond, because in some ways they're in the same boat, a dark boat that's all about whom they really are, in contrast to whom they thought they were...

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was okay with Tara being gone, too. I've never been a huge fan, and she's been annoying me for the last season or two. And I'm looking forward to Chris Meloni as well. I'm excited to see how he shakes things up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm annoyed that they chose to turn Tara. I think she's been someone who could have been relegated to the background a long time ago, and I'm not thrilled by the prospect of her getting MORE screen time. I did enjoy Pam in this, though. As usual, she was fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was late watching this (which made my father and his wife nuts cause I'm the person that explains what they just watched. :-)

I was back to having FUN! Last season...I didn't have as much fun as I had the previous seasons. But watching this ep I was laughing and smiling and fussed when they stopped the ep in the middle of a scene. :-) Didn't matter that I totally expected Tara to go after Sookie...I was highly annoyed to see that final credit card come up when it did and it's been a while.

    Let's see:

Adored Jessica's reaction to Bill being out of town. Queen for a day...and what's her first act...throw a party. lol

I still hate the idea of Jessica and Jason as a couple. Probably because i'm still annoyed at the death of Jessica and Hoyt as a couple. But Steve Newlin's arrival and Jason being dumb enough to be conned into letting him in was a hoot. I absolutely refuse to put my critical hat on for that sequence cause it just made me laugh.

I have to say that I do really like Bill and Eric as a team. (Really, Bill I'd have at least walked a few feet away from the container while they were going at it....unless of course you were just getting a kickout of yelling snide remarks in an attempt to throw of their rhythm.

Don't like Eric's sister. Just hasn't gelled for me so far.

Terry - that last scene with he and his army buddy finally gave a hint that this story might be interesting.

Sam - I was beginning to wonder if Alcide was gonna man up and confess that he'd killed the pack leader. Their little death ritual...um...what? why? was it really necessary? What was most astonishing was to see Patty the Daytime Whore (from My Name is Earl) playing such a serious character.

Lafayette...my hands down favorite scene of the ep was Lafayette getting in Alcide's face. AWESOME.

It occurred to me...Tara is Alan Ball's version of Bubba. I have never had a problem with the character just occasionally issues with her story. I was kind of bummed that they let the other stories rob of us their bestie scenes. And I really didn't like the anger storyline she had last season. Hopefully her brain will end soon. I'm interested to see her reaction to being turned against her will play out. (I don't think there's enough meat to that for 13 eps but I'm curious. It is something she expressly did NOT want so I think it would be fun.
