I feel conflicted about this episode. On one hand I feel like it gave us some forward momentum that is going to give us some great future episodes, but on the other hand I feel like it was the weakest episode of the season yet. That's not to say that it was a bad episode, but it just didn't measure up to the quality of the other four episodes that the season started out with.
I think in large part that was due to a lot more focus on the new characters-Isaac, Erica, Boyd, etc. I find that I just really don't care about them that much and when they're on the screen for too long I find myself wishing that they would go away. They're just portrayed too one dimensionally. They're all too cocky and self assured and homogenous. If they're going to be part of the season (which of course they are) I'd like to see to see more than self arrogance and swagger. Or at least not have three of them be that way-for example tonight it would have been refreshing to see Boyd doubting that Derek was doing the right thing and at least expressing that to Scott even if he followed Derek's orders in the end.
That said there were some really great and funny parts to tonight's episode. I laughed out loud at the classroom scenes and the teens trying to convince Lydia to go to Scott's house for a study group. I don't think I've laughed so hard in a long time as when Stiles locked Scott's door and then proceeded to put a chair under the doornob and tried to brush it off by saying that there had been break in and a murder in the neighborhood. I very rarely say that someone is absolutely perfect for a role, but I truly don't think that anyone could pull off the role of Stiles better than Dylan O'Brien.
And the writers definitely set up some intriguing developments and mysteries for the weeks to come. Jackson is the Kanima, but did he kill all those people or did the other Kanima that was in the car do it? Matt the photographer now knows something is up with Scott because of the effect that appears in photos because he's a werewolf, so how much is he going to discover? Danny has the recovered video of Jackson on the night of the full moon, so did he watch it and will he become involved with all the supernatural stuff? What's up with Lydia-is she just immune to all things supernatural?
I feel like this wasn't the best episode, but ultimately they used it to set up a ton of stuff for the rest of the season, so that makes it better. I'm just looking forward to finding out what the writers have planned for the rest of the season and finding out the answers to the mysteries and questions posed tonight.
I was about ready to smack Lydia upside her head for kissing Jackson after he's been an absolute...is there something worse than being a s*it to someone? Then Allison took care of Barbie Wolf.
We got a number of clues as to who the Kanima so I wasn't surprised that it was Jackson at all. (I can't recall if I voiced a prediction or not.) Leaves the question...is Jackson going past season two? I wouldn't be sorry if they killed him off, having made him he Kanima, given that the character is a little less 3 dimensional than the other regulars.
what I can't figure out is why Boyd is always at Derek's side. Hmm, maybe he's a beta in the real wolf sense of the word (i.e. second in the hierarchy) where as Issac and Barbie Wolf are cannon fodder. (I mean really Derek, you expected those two to handle a creature that got you with the venom slash?)
Here's my major logic question....Why have these kids not taken the bestiary to Scott's boss? (a) HE'S THE ONE WHO TOLD THEM WHAT TO LOOK FOR. Why not let him give reading it a shot (b) he graduated medical school, latin is on the curriculum..better odds of translating it. The seem to have opened the book, been flummoxed, and decided that wondering around wondering what a kanima was was a better tactic.
I really liked the ep. Loved the classroom stuff. Was bummed that Allison didn't have any silver on her when Barbie started digging claws in her thigh. Not sure what's up with the photographer. They did a good job of putting him up as a kanima red herring. Loved that when Derek made his "alpha" revelation he almost had a look of pride on his face. :-)
other kanima that was in the car? DID I MISS SOMETHING MAJOR WHEN MY DVR CUT OF BEFORE THE CREDITS???? argh! (I think its fixed now but...ARGH! ) What did I miss?
I didn't have the same problems you had with the ep ( I think I had more problems with Ice Pick) but I do have to agree that Derek's children are one note. It doesn't help that the actress playing Barbie Wolf is unconvincing for me...and she plays the same note (the writer's fault) every time she's on screen.
Oh yeah, you'll have to catch a repeat airing or watch it online because the ending was pretty fantastic. Once Jackson turned into a kanima he was walking down a road (in creature form) and approached a car. It was pretty clear that somebody was inside and that the writers wanted you to think that he was going to kill them to, but then he put his hand on the drivers side window and whoever was inside put their hand up on the glass to match his. Then Jackson ran away and whoever was in the car sped away (burned rubber).
The hand was gloved and you couldn't see who was in the car, so I can't really say whether it was another Kanima or not, but there seemed to be a sense of familiarity. You definitely have to see the scene to get a better sense of it. But it does open up a whole new lot of questions like whether the person is a kanima and how they know Jackson.
Lol I felt the same way about Lydia kissing Jackson too. I mean he's been a total ass to her the entire time on the series. I think it's really time that she gets some self confidence and realizes that she deserves better than a slime-ball like him.
As for the bestiary, I think it's because they didn't have time. At first I did definitely agree with you, but after considering the timeline I realized that they must have just gotten the bestiary the night before this episode took place. That didn't really leave them with a lot of time to take it to Scott's boss. More than likely they planned to, but they were probably recovering from the events of the previous night (Scott getting stabbed, Stiles nearly drowning and dying). When you have traumatic experiences like that you tend to put things off to just take a breather especially if you think you'll have time the next day.
Also they couldn't really leave school to get it to him because they were watching over Lydia. And I get the feeling (plus from spoilers) that the guidance counselor is going to become a more important part of the series here shortly.
another great episode!! my favorite scene of the episode was when they got to Scott's house and Stiles was locking the door and putting the chair there and stuff! It was so funny! and i did not like that Lydia and Jackson were kissing!! She needs to be with Stiles
so Jackson is the Kanima...did he edit the video himself? is he even capable of doing that? and is the Kanima like a split personality thing...cuz Jackson had no idea of either being the Kanima or editing the video....(also about the person in the car i have no idea y my mind is locked to either the photographer or Mr Harris)
i thought it was a good episode. i still have hopes that jackson will stop being a jerk at least in part. His character has a lot of levels. but then again now they might just kill him.
I didn't get the sense that this ep was the next day. (in which case it would have made sense for Scott to plan to hand it to him at work that afternoon.)
As annoyed with Lydia as I was, it was completely in character for her to do that. Millions of women do it every day and with guys that treat them a lot worse than Jackson did Lydia.
So far I've want to have to adult to teen conversations...this one with Lydia and one with Styles about letting a mechanic do un-authorized work on his car. :-D
Gotta say, I loved Jackson and Lydia (not only because I'm a Sterek fan). I think they work together very well, she clearly still loves him and and I think he loves her too. But his selfish and self centered way is bigger them what he feels for her. A Jackson redemption plot is needed, and maybe that's what we will get with him being the Kanima.
Caught it! You're right....definitely glad I went back and watched it. I think the creature in the car is definitly a kanima. It looked like it poked its claws through the gloves. But the control makes me wonder...was that the creature that turned Jackson? If if so, *when* did it happen?
My thoughts exactly, it will be a friend...which is totally creepy that they have a monster who kills people to make friends or is his 'friend' targeting people for him to kill?
Enjoyed the episode, finally find out whats up with Jackson. There was less Derek than I would have liked, he is way cooler than his new wolves. I keep calling the Erica girl Tessa cause of Ringer lol but didn't she like stab Alison with her claws? How was she not hurt from that at all? Also Bianca Lawson appears to never age...Lastly, never eat something from a high school science experiment!

ReplyDeleteDoesn't the counselor translated the Kanima bit as 'he seeks a friend'. Maybe the person in the car, is his friend or whatever.

ReplyDeleteI think Jackson connected with the science teacher. He quoted Einstein during class and the car had an Einstein quote on the bumper.
