Really great, and for a pilot incredible! Some of the acting was not as fluid as I could hope, and quite disappointed its not current events, otherwise this has the feel (even to the music lol) of West Wing: which is a high standard to aim for. Not bad at all - definitely got my five ep nod.
Loved the pilot episode. It shows great potential, and although it wasn't strictly a "current event", it's atleast a rather recent event. Let's hope future episodes show events closer to present day.
I liked it. I think the cast (and the director) need to gel in Sorkin for a little bit to really nail the rhythm right and hit the sarcasm bites without needing to scream them. But loads of potential. And I am pretty sure I'm going to love the Jim Harper character. ::Sigh:: just so nice to have Sorkin back on my TV.
- This was nothing unexpected but it was pretty well done with some solid performances. - Sam Waterston as the boozy boss was the best. His outburst about being a marine and kicking the producer's ass was hilarious. - The criticism that the story wasn't centered around a current news story is wholly unfair. This is a pilot. Pilots are shot many months in advance (if not close to a year sometimes) of a show's premiere and written even longer before that. Any "ripped from the headlines" plot would most likely be old news by the time the show made it to air. - Even though I liked Alison Pill's character I think her awkwardness was too exaggerated (bordering on caricature or parody) and the love triangle they're trying to set up already has my eyes rolling. - The two leads, Emily Mortimer and Jeff Daniels, were quite good. No complains there. [Full disclosure - I've always been partial to Emily Mortimer so my objective nature may well be compromised when it comes to her.] - After watching the solid pilot, the first thing that popped into my head was "does this show really need Olivia Munn?" I don't think so.
Something tells me I'll like this better than The West Wing, because I relate better to the idea of writing something that's meaningful to a person (journalism) in the name of a belief, more than how the White House deals with everyone else. There's more space to critique politics and political culture here (which a lot of people aren't going to like)
But really The News Room/Journalism could be seen as juxtaposition to the White House/Political maintenance and I think that's pretty interesting when you consider how much political claught the media can have over the politicians!
So much took place in The West Wing, even if you think the Newsroom is better suited, you would be missing out on a great show with some outstanding actors, with superb storylines! Sorkin is Sorkin and if you like him.you'll like this.
I watched the West Wing on and off for years, so I don't know if it's because I'm older and my perspective has changed, or what, but I felt really close to this pilot...but hey, I'm game to rewatch West Wing again sometime soon!
We are so much a like at times,i also watched, then stopped for awhile, about 4 summers ago,i was flipping the channels and there is was so,i continued an i managed to make it all the way through. Yes The Newsroom seems to resonate with me as well,Jeff Dainels is perfect for the part,so is Sam Waterson!
I meant to ask you about this, did you ever check out The Bridge Fanzine Submission? I left you a link, but try Fringuenity, they had the info for it.I believe it might be a magazine or comic having to do with Fringe.
Actually, I thought that the premise was that the show will take place in 2010 so it can follow real news (albeit retrospectively). So I think a lot of the criticism levied at the show with regards to covering old news is that Will gets to be this unique news anchor that really digs deep... except that he has the advantage of hindight. Or something.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Genius...pure genius.
