Mafiosa joins Engrenages (Spiral), Braquo and Pigalle, la nuit in the pile of american remakes of Canal+ series in development. What's next : Scalp (about traders) ? Hard (about the porn industry) ? La Commune (about gangs) ? Maison Close (about a brothel) ? Reporters (about journalists) ? Airing the original series instead of remaking them ?

Helion Pictures takes US remake rights to French TV series Mafiosa.

Steven Bawol’s company will create an English-language version of the show that has had a successful 4-season run on Canal+.

Steven Bawol’s Helion Pictures has bought the US remake rights to the French-made crime drama Mafiosa about the Corsican mafia from Image et Compagnie.

Mafiosa’s four seasons have aired on Gallic TV channel Canal Plus since December 2006.

Mafiosa stars Hélène Fillières and Thierry Neuvic in the drama about the inner workings of a Corsican mob family after its patriarch dies and his young niece takes over as heir to the family business.

Helion also snagged the rights to another of Canal Plus’ crime drama’s Pigalle, la nuit in March. Dexter’s James Manos Jr., who won an Emmy for his work on The Sopranos, is writing a pilot for a US series and will exec produce if the series is picked up by a US network.

Image et Compagnie was founded in 1985 by Serge Moati and produces fiction, documentary and magazines for several major TV networks in France.

As a bonus, here's the great opening sequence of season 2 depicting the two main characters, Jean-Michel Paoli and Sandra Paoli (brother and sister), when they were children (no need to indicate the title of the song used here) :

  3. Interesting. I like the art concepts except for the season 3 DVD cover, because she looks like a bee-woman with those unfortunate and unflattering sunglasses.
