Fringe - Jeff Pinkner Steps Down As Showrunner Before The Final Season

20 Jun 2012

Some surprising news has just emerged as Fringe prepares for its final 13 episode season five.

Jeff Pinkner has decided to step down as co-showrunner and head writer, as well as no longer retaining his executive producer role on the show.

JJ Abrams made this statement:
"For four years, J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner have worked tirelessly as a team to keep all the worlds in order on Fringe. We're thankful for the invaluable contributions Jeff has made to the show and of course wish him well and look forward to working together in the future. J.H. Wyman's importance to Fringe cannot be overstated, however, and I'm thrilled that he will continue as showrunner for the concluding chapters of our story. We can't wait for our fans to see what we have in store for them in the wild conclusion of Fringe."

Remaining show-runner JH Wyman has assured fans on his TWITTER that he will be here until the end, stating that he "will be here [Fringe] until the last frame."

What do you make of the news? Worried for Fringe's final season? Hopefully more news will emerge over the next few days!

  1. I don't think this is a big deal. I think they know where they're going and don't necessarily need Pinkner to play show runner for 13 episodes.

It would be funny though if "pursuing other projects" would include "Revolution" (which I am sure it doesn't, but I would laugh myself sick if that were the case!)

  2. I would have to agree with you, they have had to know for months where they were going with this,i'm sure they had outlined, probably already had the storyline all planned out. Plus he is still the showrunner..

I do believe he has another offer with BadRobot, maybe not in Revolution, but then again,he just might....

  3. I don't like it. It always seemed like they balanced each other out, not having 1 helm the whole thing. But oh well.

  4. It's a big deal, but certainly not a disaster. There is not much left to do on Fringe except guide it through the goalposts. Nobody can say that Joel Wyman doesn't know the show or the characters. I am not really sure who creatively contributed to what over the years, though. But, it's sad because they just seemed like a great team and now there is just one showrunner now.

  5. In the article i read in TV Guide,it said he stepped down from being an executive producer, but he is still the showrunner.(along with Wyman of course).

  6. I really did not like "A Short Story About Love", which was Joel Wyman's baby. I think this is another case of Fringe killing the wrong Lincoln. Maybe I'm wrong, but I honestly think Wyman is the one that has made all the cliched and campy choices in this show. Sorry if I have upset anyone, but this is my opinion. I just hope that it doesn't mean season 5 will be worse than season 4. We'll see...

  7. P.S. This has to be a money thing. Budget cuts bite!

  8. THANK YOU, Ricky. That's exactly what I was thinking. I think of that episode as "A Shit Story About Love".

  9. I have fully trust in J. Pinkner. And well it's the last Season and people need to move on. I bet some other Cast/Crew members are seeking for another projects as well. Because we mustn't forget: After Season 5 they all need a new job. Or keeping a vacation....

  10. Not the best of news but it gives me no worries about the series as it comes to its end.

  11. Not a potential disaster (like Dan Harmon and Community), but it's not exactly good news. He couldn't have stuck around the last half a season? It's disappointing, but I'm certainly not worried the show is going to be like the last season of Gilmore Girls or anything like that. And I do understand that with Fringe about to end, the people working on the show need to start looking to their next jobs, but still. Sad.

  12. A little worrying perhaps but it is probably a budget related reason, I hope Pinker doesn't leave the show completely.

  13. Not that worried. Not saying it's going to be "better" per se, but it's certainly not lemmings off the cliff time.

  14. I can only hope that we don't notice the difference and that the lsat 13 episodes are up to the same awesome standard as the previous seasons.

  15. They were like the Damon&Carlton for Fringe.
I'm surprised to hear that Jeff Pinkner stepped down and wonder what made him to decide that way.

  16. I don't know what to make out of it. I mean, I can't see any logical reason to left the show in its critical moments...

On Monday Joel Wyman say there halfway through writing the season. I guessing the rest of the season is mapped out pretty well, as it end of stuff that they have been hinting at for years. So there just maybe not enough money/work for two show-runner and head-writers when it half season.

As a fan of Fringe I hate to heard of show runner leaving but I going to remain positive, plus remember last year when Frank Darabont was fired/left The Walking Dead, everyone thought he would go downhill in the second half of season 2. I found having see it the opposite is true, I think it improve a lots in the second half of the season. Just because Jeff is gone does not been Fringe will go down hill

  18. surprised he hasnt stayed for the final season

  19. This is not a disaster since we still have one of the original 2 showrunners left. But I want to know, however, why he would exit with only 13 episodes left. Couldn't his "other projects" wait for a few months? Well, I am sure most of the last stories have already been settled, so, I am not worried..

  20. That's the only explanation.. I don't see why else anyone would leave a show with only 13 episodes left! They probably asked both of them to take heavy pay cuts and only one of them choose to stay back... But I wish at least the finale could have been written by both of them...

  21. As the saying goes 'Only time will tell' on this one. I'll be hoping for the best.

  22. I think the shock value is higher than the actual impact.

  23. I'm a little surprised since it's so close to Fringe's end but not worried about the show.

  24. This doesn't sound good at all. Am I overreacting? I hope this doesn't drastically alter the course of the final season & doesn't keep it from being as awesome as it should be. :S
