Burn Notice - 6.01 - Scorched Earth - Preview

9 Jun 2012

Burn Notice season 6 premieres on
Thursday, June 14 on the USA Network at 9/8C.

From explosions to intense character drama, one thing is sure - the season 6 premiere of Burn Notice does not disappoint. Picking up where season 5 ended, Fiona is taken into custody and processed. She is facing possible prosecution for 3 counts of capital murder, but Michael is the one falling apart. In one of the most intense emotional scenes of the series, Michael reads the letter Fiona wrote him. Sam finds him in the Charger on the side of the road and Michael accuses Sam of letting Fiona go. Things are tense with the best friends as Sam later admits that he and Fiona staged her "escape" and that tension lasts throughout much of the episode. As Sam tries to convince Michael that Fiona did the right thing by turning herself in before Michael lost sight of who he was, Michael yells, "I was fighting for her." Brokenly he asks, " What do I do now Sam? What do I do?" Sam tells him to fight harder and that's exactly what Michael does. It's not a secret that I thought season 5 was subpar. However the premiere of season 6 has exactly what season 5 lacked - a Michael on a mission hellbent to restore order to his life. Not even in season 1 when he was trying to find out who burned him has Michael been so determined. He will get Fi out of prison or die trying. In other words, Michael Westen is back folks and heaven help the person who stands in his way this time.

Anson Fullerton is target #1, and Jesse has a lead on him. As Sam explains that Anson is heading for the boat docks presumably to flee, Michael slams on the brakes of the Charger and nearly concusses Sam. A Michael this focused worries Sam and he asks what the plan is. Michael: ""He's the reason why I lost Fi. What do you think the plan is?" Usually methodical and logical, this Michael has been pushed too far. He has no patience with bureaucracy, doesn't want to talk things through and even shoots at a civilian to make his point. It's a fascinating look at the character and bodes well for an intense season 6. In other good news, Fiona has her share of drama too, Maddie rocks even when in danger, and one of my favorite Burn Notice characters comes back. It completely shocked me and I hope it is a season long arc. This episode has something for every Burn Notice fan and is an impressive way to kick off a promising season 6.

Favorite lines (in no particular order):

"We both know that you didn't kill Larry Sizemore because you were suddenly overwhelmed by the desire to provide free security for the British Consulate."
Michael: "You'll never convince me that Fiona giving herself up was the right thing to do. Never." Sam: "Well that's why we didn't ask you."
"Believe it or not. We're the good guys."
"I hope that this business relationship that you have with Michael is worth it because from the way it looks, you're going to die for him."
"I'm going to hunt you down and I'm going to kill you."
"I'd hate for you to lose Fiona and your mommy on the same day."
"I know explosions, I know Michael, and I know that we're done here."
"There's the good guy patch."
"What about Fiona. Is it as bad as the news is saying?" "It's worse."
"Your statement is interesting Ms. Glenanne. Some of it even fits with what we know. Here's the problem. Your story is missing a main character."

What I Learned:

Old trucks are easier to steal than new ones
Speed and sharp turns cause accidents
Manhunts are all about the number of people available
The CIA has some nifty gadgets
Never, ever take something Michael loves away from him

Don't forget to watch Burn Notice on Thursday, June 14 on the USA Network at 9/8C. It's going to be quite the ride!

  1. I'm more excited about Burn Notice than I have been in a long time.  Here's to lethal, focused, somewhat out of control Michael Westen and all the intense action that comes with him.

  2. Nice Preview Dahne! I think i'm as excited as you are!I I wasn't thrilled with last season either,i even stopped watching for awhile anyway. The season finale grabbed my attention alright, and even while Fi was being arrested i just knew this season was going to be special....I can't wait to see Michael in action,i think were in for a ride! Thank You!

Dahne,do you plan on writing recaps this season,or maybe a forum?

  4. I like that we are getting such a different side of Michael and yet it is still in character.  Last season was kind of blah and I never liked Anson much anyway as a villain.  He felt very been-there-done-that with all the other overconfident, talky, make me want to slap them villains we had before.  I'm hoping they take care of Anson quickly and we get someone more like Simon for the rest of the season.

As fro recaps, I'm a bit overwhelmed right now with Supernatural polls and nominations but I'll definitely do some kind of recap for the premiere.  Once Adam starts the Best Show contest, I'll have a little more time to devote to Burn Notice and White Collar.  Any ideas on where I can get good BN screencaps?  That tends to be one of the most time consuming thing for this show.

  5. It was quite a ride, that's for sure.  I think this premiere was well-crafted to pull in all kinds of Burn Notice fans.  There is the meltdown over Fi for the shippers.  Explosions and guns going off for the action people.  Anson issues for those who like the continuing story line.  Just well put together and a great way to get people pumped up for the season.

  7. Holy crap is all I can say. I saw the preview with Bly and was completely stunned. Not sure if  I should love him or hate him, right now I'm going for the latter.  Makes me wonder if he's been working for Anson all along.  I'm so excited yet worried for what this season premiere will do to us. I see many tears over cheers this first episode.  I hope Fiona can see past Bly's big lie.

  8. Great Preview report. I am so stoked for the return of the Real Michael Weston. I loved how he has been pushed to the breaking point with Fi surrendering.

  9. Holy crap, just saw that preview. It was so good, it really got me back in the Burn Notice state of mind. It really needs to be Thursday right now.

  10. Thanks.  I try to add screencaps at least every other paragraph of my recaps and for some reason it is very difficult to find a good BN screencap site.  I guess I'm spoiled because there are so many good ones for Supernatural and a couple for White Collar.

  11. I'm surprised they released that scene.  Bly back was a huge shock for me and a very pleasant one.  Besides Seymour (who's now on Grimm) and Barry, he was the guest star I wanted back more than any.  I thought his snarky humor and deadpan menace was a perfect foil for Fiona's passion and Michael's seriousness.  He and Michael were allies before and I hope by season's end they are again.  Bly is awesome.

  12. Michael being so out of control is an exciting twist to the character for me.  It reminds me a lot of when he shot Strickler in Long Way Back.  Since that is one of my favorite episodes, I'm happy to be getting those vibes again.

  13. Wow. This is going to be great. I am so glad that Agent Bly is back. We'll just have to wait and see how this shakes out ;)  Here is a link to my Photobucket for BN S5. They are in albums according to episode name. There are 7316 screencaps. Most are off the video hub or hulu. You are welcome to them.

  14. Wow!  That's awesome.  Thanks!  Are you planning to do screen caps as season 6 progresses? It takes me 2-3 days to write a recap and then I put screencaps on last.  My ideal would be to post the recap  complete with pictures on Sundays.

  15. Must say I think you must have watched a different season 5 than most of the BN fans - most that I have read think season 5 is one of, if not the best seasons of BN to date and that Anson is the toughest foe that Michael has faced yet.  He is actually several steps ahead of Michael and Michael is unable to get in front of Anson.

I agree, season 6 looks to awesome!

  16. I'm way to excited for this. I love seeing this side of Michael but at the same time I want to get in a ball and just cry, cant stand to see him w/o his Fi looks so lost
:(  and that scene with him and Sam is just full of so much emotions. Gahhh I need my burn notice now!!!!!

  17. The beginning is definitely more emotional than we usually see from Burn Notice but the last half is straight up action.  Anson will be going down.  Nothing can stop Michael when he is this determined.

  18. My problem with Anson is that we've already had him over and over again just reincarnated in a different character.  It's the same smug, overly confident, never shuts up villain we had with Carla, Vaughn, Brennan, and so on and so on.  This type has gotten very old for me.  At least Simon was off his rocker nuts and Strickler's whole PR approach was novel.  This time around I would like a Burn Notice villain that was actually scary and NOT addicted to his own voice.

  19. Mmmmm...
straight up action me likey ;) haha, yeah
Anson will be going down just a matter of time. But just watching the scene where Michael is angry it's kinda scary haha he is definitely going to b going some where dark until he gets Fiona out cause he will do it at any cost!!
