Year Long Ratings: NBC No Longer in Last Place
24 May 2012
RatingsFor the first time in eight years, NBC might avoid finishing the broadcast season in last place.
The 2011-12 season concluded Wednesday and network ratings analysts say NBC officially ranks third among the Big Four networks among the key adults 18-49 demographic. ABC has the notoriety of slipping to fourth, with NBC having edged out its rival by a mere tenth of a rating point.
Broadcasters released their traditional season-end ratings tallies today (below), but additional DVR data will continue to trickle in during the next couple weeks. There is a chance ABC’s average could round up to tie NBC, though networks analysts say it’s unlikely.
Here’s how the season-to-date chart breaks down compared to last season:
Adults 18-49
Network…’11-12…Difference
Fox…3.2…-9%
CBS…3.0…+3%
NBC…2.5…+9%
ABC…2.4…-4%
CW…0.7…-22%
Total Viewers

That is surprising considering how bad NBC's year has been guess the success of The Voice really helped
ReplyDeleteAlways depends on how you read the data of course, in Total Viewers NBC is still last (CW does not count).
ReplyDeleteI was surprised when I read this but with the Superbowl added in I can see the bump it gives to NBC.
ABC has been lost on me since LOST left their network.....
NBC Ratings UP courtesy of the SuperBowl
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the superbowl effect most likely
ReplyDeleteYep, the Superbowl was the tenth of a point that lifted NBC over ABC, but NBC overall is up 9% while ABC is done 4%. That is not about the Superbowl so much. It's more about ABC aging series.
ReplyDeleteStill a long way to go for NBC in the prime demo and especially in overall viewership, but at least they are moving in the right direction!
CW doesn't really count, does it? Eh, I don't know what to think about this network. And Superbowl must have boosted up NBC a lot, it doesn't have a good track record. I also wonder how much The Voice actually helped.
ReplyDeleteOuch, the CW lost 22 % in demos and 15 % in viewers.
ReplyDeleteIf you consider a whole week of "superbowl effect" that's at least 2 or maybe even 3 tenths into the whole year.
ReplyDeleteThe Voice really does help. Unfortunately, a lot of what drives these year-to-year ratings are the big reality-competition shows. ABC's big reality shows, DWTS and Bachelor/Bachelorette, have seen steady declines in the demo over the last few seasons while other networks entries like The Voice, American Idol, and X Factor continue to bring in large numbers of younger viewers.
ReplyDeleteYou guys, it's all because of Whitney. Totes.
ReplyDeleteThis stuff confuses me, so what is the overall rankings of the networks for this season? (my computer won't load the link so if the answer is there, I apologize)
ReplyDeleteWhoa. I am pretty surprised by these news.
ReplyDeleteThe rankings are in the post.
ReplyDeleteIn the 18-49 demographic:
1. FOX
2. CBS
3. NBC
4. ABC
5. CW
In total overall viewers:
1. CBS
2. FOX
3. ABC
4. NBC
5. CW
Ohh okay, thanks. For some reason it wasn't clicking in my head.
ReplyDeleteWow that is surprising. I thought ABC was doing well and NBC woefully.
