ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How long have you known Elena would end season 3 in transition to become a vampire?

JULIE PLEC: The ending had been in the works for about two years. In the first series of books, that’s what happens to her. When Kevin [Williamson] and I first came on the show, we said, “Well, it can’t happen to her the way it happens in the books,” which is on, like, page 200 of the first book. [Laughs] That felt obviously too soon, and rushed, and we didn’t want to make a show about a teenage girl who instantly becomes a vampire. But we always knew that her journey would take her there eventually, and we just kept riding the wave of when it felt right. You’ve got a girl who just sorta lost her last adult living family member when Aunt Jenna died last year, so when we started this season, what we really wanted to do was begin this relationship with Alaric as her guardian and mentor, and then tear that away from her at the end leaving her and her brother with nobody. It felt like now was the time — when you’re left with no grownup, no adult supervision, no parent, no guardian — for Elena to experience the next evolution of her journey. All the stuff that we did with having her get stronger over the course of the year, training and getting in touch with her physical self, and all the grief and all the emotion that she went through, all the compassion that she has for everybody, it will all play into next year and what kind of person and vampire she will actually be — if she should choose to see the transition through.

Obviously, she will transition.
There will be a discussion to be had about it at the beginning, but the road we’re going down is pretty balls out.

It wasn’t until that moment when ghost Alaric appeared to Jeremy that I was like, wait a minute, they could conceivably kill Elena because Nina Dobrev would still be on the show as Katherine.

We’re pretty notorious for being willing to go there and do radical things that other people wouldn’t necessarily feel good about doing, so there was a sense of fun in that moment. People were gonna be thinking, poor Matt, he’s such a goner, and mourning him in that moment and not even thinking ultimately that Elena was in any kind of jeopardy. So when that happened, it’s just like, Oh s—!

  1. About freaking time they decide to go with that story.

  2. How stupid
is she (Julie)? Of course Elena will turn.

    She didn't
want to become a vampire. At least not so soon (so young). But she will turn.
She won't say "I don't feel like becoming a vampire today, so I'll die and
leave my brother behind. Alone, since I'm the only family Jeremy has left".
And if she wouldn't want to turn they would kill her in the previous episode
and this one would be about her dying. End of Season, end of the show.

    True. They
could keep Katerina. But the show is about a girl between two brothers. None of
the brothers is interested in Katerina anymore.

    It's
absolutely possible, that Elena knew she had vampire blood in her system.
Probably she felt better, healed. So she took the risk. Safe Matt and risk to
die and turn. Or, she was suicidal on that day and wanted to die.

    Of course
she loves Stefan. More than she loves Damon. Now. It's not just the memories that
Damon stole and were now restored to her. It's a question, how much she'll let
the vampire nature control and change her. Maybe enough to change her mind.

    Great. A new
idiot in the council, who is interested only in killing vampires, not caring
that these vampires were actually protecting the town for the last year and
    more.

    Bonnie getting
even worse and facing the consequences of her magic. That's new. Bonnie wants
to do what she want's? Fine by me. But I don't want to hear her complaining and
blaming the vampires (especially the brothers) for everything that happens.

    Becca was a
bitch and killed Elena because Alaric killed Klaus, whom by the way she wanted
to see dead. She should make up her mind. And of course everyone wants her head
on a sliver plate for that. The brothers, Elenas friends, especially Klaus, …
Becca is a walking corpse. And not only because she died 1000 years ago.

    Seriously Julie.
    Give us something new.

    Or a better
idea: Stop wasting your time on a interview and go to work. Sooner you start
working on S4, sooner we get to see it.

  3. Agree. It's
not too soon to turn Elena, it's about time.

    Of course they
could make more seasons before they turn Elena. But most of the characters are
vampires. They don't get older. They need to be a certain age. They can't make
the show for another 20 years. Unless the actors are actually vampires. Stefan can't
be 17 or 18 and look like 40 or 50.

    It's about time
they go on with the story. Cause Elena becoming a vampire is far from the end
    of the storyline.

    Sure, in
4-5-6 years they can replace the actors. But some of them (Nina, Ian, Joseph)
are so good, it's gonna be almost impossible to replace them.

  4. LMAO, the sooner she gets to work on S4 you'll get to see it?

WRONG. You will see it in Sept no matter if Julie finished the scripts tomorrow or the 31th of August.

  5. Doesn't mean she can waste her time.

  6. "You know, I myself did not see his entire body burned to bits. So I can’t say 100 percent that we’ve seen the last of him" <<<<<<<<<<<< has to be a good thing right???? *fingers, toes, EVERYTHING CROSSED!!!!*

  8.  I'm not convinced.  I think she's just throwing Joseph Morgan fans a bone.

  9.  this arguement is so amusing, if only i had popcorn...wait i got some chips instead. this show has been going down hill since Julie took over.

  10. They probably can't say anything for sure right now anyway about actors. The interview is great but it is still pretty early, they probably just have that rough idea and not much else...that being said where is season 4 =P

  11.  Disregard what I said above.  I just read Plec's interview with TV line and Morgan IS coming back.  She makes it very clear.

  12. Just saw that interview myself. Guess the early pick up gave them a lot of time to talk about season 4 before the summer so they can have stuff to work on before they officially go back in august.

  13. Yeah, these two Julie Plec interviews cleared up a few things in the finale for me:

     - Joseph Morgan will be back
     - Klaus' possession of Tyler won't be kept a secret.
     - Matt is going to be okay and Tyler too, most likely.
     - Everyone will hate Rebekah, including her own brother.
     - Elena will stick with her choice for the time being.
