Supernatural - Favorite Season 7 Episode, Round 1 - Polls

24 May 2012

Today we start our season 7 episode poll. Winners of the wildcard placement were: There Will Be Blood, How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters, Of Grave Importance, and The Mentalists. Still it will be an uphill battle for any of these to take the top prize.

Contest rules are you can only vote once per poll. Polls will be up for around 24 hours, closing at 10 pm the next day (St. Louis, USA time). This will allow me time to put the new poll up. Episodes will go head-to-head, meaning that the winner of each poll will advance to the next round. Brackets are determined by where the episode placed overall in the original and wildcard polls and follow a similar format to NCAA basketball. Just remember, voting is fun but comments make hellatus pass by faster.

We will also continue nominating for our favorite quotes contest. This time we've got Hook Man and Bugs. I don't know about you, but I had a hard time finding quotes to nominate. Not the strongest episodes quote-wise. Of course, they are not the strongest episodes period.

    preacher."

    3.  Dean:  "That's it.  Next time I get to watch the cute girl's
    house."

    2.  Sam:  "One freaked out witness who didn't see
anything doesn't mean it's the Invisible Man."  Dean:
"But what if it is.  Dad
    would check it out."

    1.  Dean:  "Your half-caf, double vanilla latte's
getting cold over here, Francis."Bugs Quotes:5.  Sam:  "Yeah like when I said I'd rather play
    soccer than learn bow hunting."
    Dean:  "Bow hunting's an
    important skill."

    4.  Sam:  "You know truth is when we finally find
dad I don't know if he's even going to want to see me."  Dean:
"Sam, dad was never disappointed in you.  Never.
He was scared."  Sam:  "What are you talking about?"  Dean:
"He was afraid of what could have happened to you if he wasn't
around.  But even when you two weren't
talking, he used to swing by Stanford whenever he could.  Keep an eye on you.  Make sure you were safe."  Sam:
    "What?"  Dean:  "Yeah."  Sam:
"Why didn't he tell me any of that?"  Dean:

"Was?  Is.  Always has been."  Dean:
    "How could you think that?"
    Sam:  "Because I didn't want
to bow hunt or hustle pool.  Because I
wanted to go to school and live my life, which in our wacked out family made me
the freak."  Dean:  "You were kind of like the blonde chick
    on the Munsters."

    1.  Dean:  "Hunting's our day job and the pay is
    cr**."

  2. Ugh, I hated PPMM so much. I don't find Sam getting beaten amusing, clowns or no, and way too much time was dedicated to Sam getting beaten up by clowns.

  3. Survival of the Fittest - It's not a great finale but it's better than The Mentalists.
Plucky Pennywhistle - It's a fantastic episode but since it's going up against Time After Time it wins by default anyway.  This one is a no-brainer.
Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo - Another no-brainer.  TWBB is a bland, paint-by-numbers set-up episode.
Born-Again Identity - Repo Man is unremarkable filler.  At least BAI had Meg and Cas in it.

  4. My episode votes:

Survival of the Fittest - I found the first part slow, the middle good, and the ending outstanding.  Plus, even more importantly, the only mention of Amy was in the previouslies.  Can't say that for The Mnetalists, although I thought this was a great episode too.

Time After Time - I loved how balanced this episode was.  Plus I am a fan of both Sheriff Jodie, mom type, and historical flash backs.  Plus it had Nicholas Lea and Jason Dohring.  I absolutely adored PPMM's ending and the bizarro deaths, but once again a main character was out-of-character in a Dabb & Loflin script.  This time it was Sam.  I recently watched the interviewing scenes again and I cringed all the way through them.

How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters - An all-around excellent episode.  We go from humor to action to drama just like some of my favorite episodes of all time.  This one is in my top 5 of the season.

Didn't vote yet in the last one - I need to see Born-Again Identity again.  I didn't care so much for it the first go around so have only seen it twice.  Since I'm not overly fond of Repo Man either, this will come done to the lesser of two blahs for me.

That episode isn't in any of the polls.

  6. My votes: The Mentalists, Time After Time, Girl With Dungeon and Dragon Tatoo and The Born Again Identity.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ah yes, I forgot that you utterly despise time travel episodes.  I agree that TGwtD&DT is a no-brainer.  Easiest poll of them all for me this round.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I loved all the humor and especially the ending.  Seeing the brothers laughing made up for the big faults I found in the rest of the episode.  However, I thought the jumping back and forth to the same warehouse scene was less than effective so I can see why you would feel there was far too much time with Sam and clowns.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If it weren't for Jody Mills and Eliot Ness, Time After Time would have been completely unwatchable for me.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I wonder at the voting against Repo Man. huh. I thought that would win by a landslide.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think my subconscious wants it to be in these polls because tomorrow it goes up against Death's Door, where it will promptly be crushed.  I did edit it when I was re-reading and noticed my mistake, so my vote is TGwtD&DT.  If there are any mistakes in the poll, blame it on the back-to-back-to-back.....12-15 hour work days I'm putting in these last 2 weeks.  Man I can't wait until Friday's over and summer vacation begins.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Born-Again Identity has the reappearance of Cas so there is a segment of fans that will vote for it.  It also has Sam suffering from a mental breakdown but still able to go solo on a hunt so that will be a draw for some too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I like time travel episodes, but I will say that Jody and Ness were big time draws for me too.  Especially with Jody helping Sam and getting the mom tone.  I hope we will see more of Sam and the Sheriff working together.  Actually I'm good with more Sheriff period.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I voted for Time After Time too but I'm surprised it is winning right now.  I expected it to be crushed in this competition.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Jody / Sam stuff was especially nice since it seems that Dean is, more often than not, the only one of the brothers that ever gets any significant interaction with any of the recurring characters (who aren't demons or devils).

    ReplyDelete
  16.  I moderately like both episodes but I'm not particularly fond of either so that match-up will be a tough call for me.  I think if Bobby didn't become a ghost afterward and Death's Door was the character's swan song, it would be an easier call.  Unfortunately, the "ghost Bobby" storyline really decreased the enjoyment of that episode for me.

  17. HOOK MAN

1:Sam: “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light?” That’s right out of the legend.2:Dean: Ok. Hey. Stay out of her underwear drawerBugs1:Dean: Well, truth isJoe:You know who starts sentence with "truth is"? Liars.2:Sam: Because I didn't wanna bowhunt or hustle pool - because I wanted to go to school and live my life, which, to our whacked-out family, made me the freak.Dean:Yeah, you were kind of like the blonde chick in The Munsters.

  18. 1. Survival of the Fittest - alright as an episode, but definitely was better than The Mentalists
    2. Plucky
Pennywhistle - Great episode (first one I enjoyed in any way after Death's Door), plus I hated Time After Time
    3. Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo - both were good, but DDT was better
    4. Born-Again Identity - While I found the fix to Sam's problems FAR too easy, Repo Men only had Sam/Lucifer plot that was interesting

    ReplyDelete
  19. I actually like time travel episodes usually, but Time After Time pretty much did nothing for me either. It just didn't feel particularly special like the other episodes (though I suppose that may be in part because the era they traveled back to had nothing specifically to do with Sam and Dean's life and also perhaps because Sam got left out of the time traveling once again).

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Mentalists - because I LOVED the Melanie character, and found her and Dean's insta-bond believable and interesting. I would love to see the character again, though I have sincere doubts it'll happen. And even though Sam is pissed at Dean for most of the episode, I find even their scenes to be honest. I just really liked this episode, A LOT.

Plucky Pennywhistle's... - just *barely* beat Time After Time, and the only reason it won is because of the final scene. Seeing Dean laugh as he did was heart-warming. There were also a few nice brotherly moments throughout the episode. As much as I LOVED Jensen in the 40's garb, he and Sam were separated for the majority of that ep, so Plucky's wins for me.

The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo - I have a girl crush on Felicia Day, and I thought she was super fun in this episode. I liked the focus on her, as an outsider, being thrust into this larger scheme and finding the strength within to do the right thing. I also found all the nerd stuff fun :)

Repo Man - Finally getting to "see" what Sam was dealing with, having Lucifer in his head, was interesting and frustrating. Seeing how the thought of losing Dean, of not knowing where to go to find him and thus listening to that voice and acknowledging it's presence, being the catalyst of his own mental breakdown...so very interesting. I also appreciated the flashback at the beginning, and just found this entire episode to be very strong. I enjoyed it more than Born-Again Identity anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Survival of the Fittest - Excellent episode with an awesome finale. The Mentalists, which I also liked, would have a better chance if it didn't fall into the Amy period.

Time After Time - Great plot and guest starts.I really liked both episodes though.

The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragon Tattoo - I loved Felicia Day and her one-liners.I really hope we see her again. Also, for some reason, apart from the ending and the scene with the Alpha,I don't remember much from There Will be Blood.

The Born-Again Identity - 15 episodes,I was waiting for this moment for 15 episodes! They managed to split the two storylines pretty evenly, which was everyone's concern. And,of course,Cas came back!
But I liked Repo Man as well.Mark Pellegrino's best work on the show,so far,in my opinion.

    Quotes:
    Hook Man
    - Dean: "So,you believe her?"
      Sam: "I do."
Dean: "Yeah,I think she's hot too."

    - Dean: "Your half-calf double vanilla latte's getting cold over her,Francis"

    Bugs
    - Matt: "Sorry,I told the truth."
Dean: "We had a plan,Matt. What happened to the plan?"

    - Dean: "So,you found some beetles,in a hole,in the ground.That's shocking,Sam."

the first poll between the mentalist  and survival is a tough decision both are my favorite but in different situation in the mentalist the brothers made amends for things happens in the past in a very practical and funny way in survival they are between the sword and the wall they relaid in instinct  and each other to confront the problem in a really life and death situation

    ReplyDelete
  23. Survival-because Sam was awsome and there is huge pontial for him for next season.

Pluky-it was cute, Sam was cute and funny. I did like Sam working with Jody in Time though. I hope we get Sam working with others next season.

Dragon Tat-I liked how Sam laughed at Dean and his HP speach to motivate Charlie.

Repo-I liked both the same but Repo is the underdog so I gave it my vote. I enjoyed what little of Sam's storyline this season we were given in these episodes. Sam was awsome in both. Jared was awsome.

  24. I agree that Death's Door has less of a punch since they resurrected Bobby so quickly.  However, just judging the episode on its own merits, it was very strong.  Still I am voting for HtWF&IM because I think it was the perfect combo of drama and comedy.

By the way, next year I say we lobby for shorter episode titles.  Some of these are crazy long.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Repo Man also brought back Baby and the amulet.  Loved the flash back specifically for that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I totally forgot the "what happened to the plan" quote.  Other than that I have all these quotes on my extended list too.

  27. First poll - Survival of the Fittest, easy contest.  Although I think it was a little weak for a finale, I have a lot of problems with Mentalist.   With the Mentalists, I liked the MOTW case and the ghost, so it's a shame that the Sam/Dean issues ruined it for me.  For starters instead of a balanced montage like in Free to Be You and Me that shows how both Sam and Dean coped during their time apart, we only get Dean.  They reunite, and again, it's all Dean's perspective.  Some fans noted that Sam might have been having hallucinations at that point and questioning whether it was really Dean, but it's so subtle I didn't pick up on it on my own.  Dean is more defensive during this episode and a little bit of a jerk at times, rather than being concerned for his mentally unstable brother, and I think  that's OOC for Dean.  Ellen has a message only for Dean.  And if this had led to something - if Dean's issues had built to something bigger than Sam's breakdown - then I might have let this pass, but as it says now, I'm left with the impression that this was supposed to convey that if Dean has the sniffles, and Sam and pneumonia, than Dean's health is more important.  There wasn't a single callback in this episode about psychics about Sam's season 1 and 2 storyline about his psychic abilities.

But the biggest issue was the way they chose to resolve the Amy issue.  I would have believed it if Sam had come to the conclusion that he didn't agree with Dean's choice, but that this wasn't worth destroying their relationship over.  Instead, it's suggested that Sam came to some big understanding that sometimes being a hunter means you have to do things that make you feel bad.  This all came from his experience having to kill the murderer out of self-defense.  Please!  Sam didn't start hunting yesterday, and he's done much worse things than killing in self-defense, so he understands the dark side of hunting just fine.  And he had a right to be angry about Amy.

Second poll - Both were strong episodes.  I went with Plucky's because it was a little more balanced between brothers, and it was maybe the only time this season we saw Sam and Dean really comfortable hunting together like old times.  My criticism with this episode though is that maybe it was a little too much like old times.  There was no indication that Sam was on the brink of a breakdown or Dean was depressed.

Third episode - Both were OK, but I went with The Girl/Dungeon.  It was a little more memorable and I like Charlie.

RepoMan/Borne Again - Both were among my favorites for the series, so this was tough.  I went with Repo mostly because I expected Borne to win and wanted to show Repo some love.

    Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie
The Girl With The Dungeons & Dragons Tattoo
    Repo Man

  32. voted for:
    survival of the fittest
    plucky pennywhistle's magic menagerie
    there will be blood
    the born-again identity

survival of the fittest: not the better spn finale we had but good and still way above season 7 average quality.

PPmm: loved that episode, lot of creativity and great bros moments.
Loved that the way of killing came from kids drawing. If I had watch the shark attack in the ball pit as a kid, I would have flatly refused to enter in a pitball again. And Unicorn in SPN ...who would have bet on that? I know I wouldn't :-)

there will be blood: loved both episodes. Chose there will be blood because GwtDt will win

born-again identity: one of my favorite season 7 episode. Cas return, Sam cured, surprise Meg.Loved so many scenes in that episode, my fav is Emanuel/Cas flashback while he was fighting. Did I mention that Cas was back? Awesome!

  34. Poll 1 - Survival of the Fittest: As much as I think it was rather anticlimatic as a finale, the ending was  awesome and it has me really eager and intrigued about all the possibilities for next season and as an episode on itself it has some really great moments. Plus, I really don't share the fandom's love for The Mentalist, the case of the week seemed too predictable to me and I think a town full of psychics could have given for a loooot more. Also, though I appreciated the Amy conflict being resolved, I just didn't like how the resolution was handled.

Poll 2 - Time after time: This was one of my favourites this season, so it's not really a competition for me. I loved the guest stars, the case and how Sam and Dean worked as a solid team despite being on a different time.

Poll 3 -  The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo: I really liked both of them but I'm gonna go with this one because, you know, Felicia Day was that awesome hehe.

Poll 4 - Repo Man: This was the hardest for me to choose, because both stories on these episodes were great, but I'm gonna go with Repo Man since the episode was handled better. There was wayyy too much going on in TBAI to really dig into any of it and the ending was seriously too rushed and too cold for me to be an episode completely satisfying.

  35. I found it a better episode than PPWM.

  36. Survival of the Fittest, Time After Time, There Will Be Blood because of Alpha Vamp, and The Born-Again Identity, though I really loved Repo Man for the Sam and Lucifer interactions.

  38. It's funny how people define "out of character" so differently.  Sam's interrogations didn't bother me because Sam said he was intentionally going to lean on them, play bad cop.  He was a little like how he was with Ronald in Nightshifter.  Sam's had a tougher side for a while.  It just doesn't always come out to play.

  40.  My problem with this episode was fairly specific.  I thought the entire Chronos story was completely horrible.  The actual time travel aspect of the episode has little to do with why I disliked it so much.

plucky peniwhistle. i really enjoyed time after time but PPMM was one of my favourites this season. it just reminded me so much of what i loved about the first few seasons of this show. it was so good to see them working together so well and i loved the comedy and the clowns and the unicorns shooting rainbows out their ass. i just loved the whole episode.
there will be blood: this was tough between this and GWDADT but i went with this for the moving forward of the storyline and the guest stars, i love crowley and cas and seeing the alpha vamp again so yeah.
the born again identity: loved this whole episode. we got castiel back!!!!! and sam was fixed and it was awesome.

  44. God I hope we gets some decent Sam centric episodes next season.

  45. 1. Survival of The Fittest, no contest. I hated The Mentalists. Hated the case, thought the idea of an entire town of psychics was stupid, hated the amy drama, it was just blah. Plus SoTF had so much awesome stuff. Dean and Cas moments, Sam being awesome and take charge, plus the purgatory twist which is making me more excited for the next season than I have been since season three.
    2. Plucky Pennywhistle's. I loved the humor and it felt like classic supernatural. Plus it was a nice break from all the angst. Time after Time was ok, and of course I loved Dean in classic forties gear, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much.

    3. This one was really hard. In the end, I went with Girl because I loved Felicia Day and I'd love to see her back. Plus it really moved the plot forward at a much needed juncture. There Will Be Blood was great too though.

    4. The Born Again Identity. Another easy one for me. It had the return of Cas, Sam being crazy and broken and yet still heroic (and gorgeous), Dean having feelings, etc. I liked Repo Man, but I didn't have the emotional connection to the story that I had with Born Again.

thats first episode has to be completely SAM centric may be the first 25 or 30 minutes because him will began to call desperate for HELP a real  S.O.S mean wile the rest half hour dean has to figure out where in hell castiel are gone and how to hide the big creapy, dangerous, hungry monsters that want to attack him in the dark

  47. I almost chose the same as you, and like very much the way you talk about Mentalists, Repo Man and GwDDT, just not in the case of PPMM. I enjoyed Time after Time better, though I recognize some weakness in its plot. I just don't get the kind of humor in Plucky's episode, it's not the kind of episode for me.
