Weekly Topic: What are the 2 best season finales?
Every season shows try to have a big finale to get people talking over the long hiatus. But which 2 have been the best. CJ, The ODI and Adam once again argue over which two should be the best. We also discuss the results from a previous debate to see if #TeamCJ or #TeamODIAdam won.
Once again the guys could not decide on a second season finale so below are the 3 we argued over. Which one should we have chosen? Remember you can say your 2 favourites in the comments below. You are just helping us settle an argument.

My vote goes to Supernatural - I think the Season 5 finale was one of the best episodes of the entire series. It was action-packed and heartbreaking, and was a great way to end Eric Kripke's run as showrunner. It gave the show an opportunity for a fresh start, too, even if I don't think Sera Gamble lived up to her job the last two seasons. Still, Swan Song was everything that is great about Supernatural, even if it might have been missing some of the trademark humor that we're so accustomed to.

ReplyDeleteI loved Swan Song, and still do. However, Kripke wrote Sera Gamble into a huge corner, and it felt a little TOO much like the end. That doesnt change the fact that it was still an amazing episode.

ReplyDeleteI'm back! Again it's so hard to decide because there are a lot of season finales that I loved because they were so dramatic, some of them so romantic and some with so great cliffhangers. So I will choose among the ones that you said and this time I am #TeamODI that Dexter's finale was amazing!!!!

Yeah, you're right about that. I think Kripke said that he had planned out five seasons and ONLY five seasons, so it makes sense that Swan Song felt like a series finale. Maybe Sera just actually had too many possible directions to take - it's a tough act to follow.

Not particularly fussed on Supernatural's S5 end, or Prison Break's end which I can't even remember it was so long ago I watched it.
ReplyDeleteDexter S4 finale was excellent, so I will vote that.
In terms of my personal favourites, it would be Lost series finale (The End) followed by the Season 6 finale of Grey's Anatomy, then Lost S3 and S4
Oh wow...Swan Song is probably my favorite finale for any season of Supernatural... but Dexter's 4th finale completely ripped the world out from under my feet. Of course since season 4, Dexter has been mediocre, but [censored] just floored me.

I still have yet to see Prison Break (I'll probably watch the first 2 seasons and then stop from what I've heard about the succeeding seasons lol)
We're getting Jeremy Carver back as a showrunner with Robert Singer, so it's possible that next year we'll have a much better focus for the show. :)
ReplyDeleteAnother note... I know that it's mostly joking, but all the SPN jokes are a tad overkill... I can't speak for the hordes of SPN fans behind me, but I had to give it a legitimate thought before I voted!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes feel like intensity of the fanbase degrades the actual perception of SPN as a legitimately good show. Swan Song was a hell of an episode that put a cap on the end of a truly remarkable 5-season arc...

Actually Kripke's five year plan got screwed over by the third season writer's strike. Kripke never intended to have angels on the show at all. However, without a credible way for Sam to save Dean from hell, he had to go the angel route.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the minority because I did not adore Swan Song. I thought it was a good season finale but not the best of Supernatural much less all of TV. I think All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 2 was a superior SPN finale. In fact, with the exception of Survival of the Fittest, I enjoyed all the other finales better.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Swan Song is a pretty divisive episode for some, you especially. I wish there was more angels fighting and wreaking havoc and less small-world hole-opening involved, but there was so much in that episode that was just perfect for me, so it works. Honestly, 2x22 for me used to be my favorite and it still is one of my top episodes, but I think season 5's is higher or at least equal for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm not voting for any of the three choices even though Supernatural is my favorite show. I actually wish there was a none of the above option. SPN has a very well-organized fan base and it's very popular in online polls but that only means there is something worthy to check out. It's a shame that the perception of the fan base sometimes stands in the way of people seeing its great qualities. We already have people making cracks against SPN for the Best Show contest and it hasn't even started yet.

ReplyDeleteIt is rather unfortunate. I don't want SPN to win things solely because we have a more dedicated fanbase than others, I want it to win when it deserves it, which, ironically is what brought the fanbase together in the first place. Back when it was incredible and also ignored by the media outside of the critics loving it...

It was the least eventful Apocalypse ever told. I think there was a bad storm somewhere and some people got sick but that's about it. My biggest problem with season 5, and you know I have a lot of problems with season 5, is that the Apocalypse was never scary. It never felt real. There was a lot of talk about how bad it would be but instead of giving me any real reason to fear it they relied on the fear of the name itself. It would have helped if the main bad guy was scary but they neutered Satan. He was far scarier in season 7 when he was a figment of Sam's imagination. That's a huge shame! In the end both the Apocalypse and Lucifer were a joke so I didn't get invested in the story line. In comparison, season 2 had the constant build up of the "what is happening with Sam?" story that intrigued me from the beginning and it had the best bad guy SPN has ever had. YED made me feel; he was intense; he was awesome. Quite frankly, season 5 would have improved if they had made Alastair the big bad instead.
ReplyDeleteAs for Swan Song itself, nothing much happened until Sam jumped. Usually in Supernatural, they spend the penultimate episode setting up the finale, talking things out, and dealing with the emotional crisis du jour, which allows the finale to be action-oriented. In season 5 they flipped it. They crammed two Horsemen into the penultimate so we could talk through the finale. I really wish Death had been part of the finale instead. You know my preference is for action over emo and Swan Song is by far the most emo finale we have had. Don't get me wrong. For a straight up emo episode, Swan Song was one of the best. I'm not a fan of voice overs, Chuck, Adam, or excessive talking when they could be showing, and I still liked the episode. But the simple fact is that the supposedly epic Apocalypse ended by two people falling into a hole. It's an underwhelming plot. Season 2 had the main family nemesis finally killed. For me that would have been a far more complete ending for the series than having one main cast member in hell. I would not have been pleased at all if Swan Song had been the series finale. My last major issue with Swan Song is how after they had just made this huge season long deal about Sam's final sacrifice, we see him up on earth walking around not 5 minutes later. Talk about a "what the hell writers" moment. Perhaps I was just supposed to be such an emotional wreck by that point that I could ignore it. Some people were upset that ghost Bobby returned so soon after the fabulous tribute of Death's Door. They felt that it lessened the emotional impact of the episode. That's exactly how I feel about seeing Sam under that streetlight.
I was releaved that two of you correcte the person who mentioned Heroes s1 finale. It resembled huge wet fart. And the peak for that show was the episode called Company Man.

It was not a joke at SPN per say, more a joke about our running joke that CJ is desperate to win one of the topics. Didn't mean to specifically pick on SPN though! :)
I was jokin on about pickig supernatural to win. But I've said in loads of podcasts now how highly I rated swan song an really do count it as one of my favourite finales because if was an emotional and relevant finale for the past 5 years
ReplyDeleteAh, I see. Well, I can't say I'm sorry that the angels came, since I'm a huge fan of Misha's, though I do think they overstayed their welcome. It would have been interesting to see where the show would have gone if the strike hadn't thrown a wrench into his plans.

ReplyDeleteWell, I ignored the part where Sam came back because I figured that's where they changed it from the series to season finale. I didn't particularly like that either. Or the fact that Dean was so easily replaced by Adam. But there was just something about that episode that made it work for me on a high level.

NONONO, watch at least the first two seasons. Just do it. You won't regret it. I swear it's awesome, and even if it ends on a cliffhanger in season 3, it is WELL worth the ride.

ReplyDeleteYes, I second the Veronica Mars idea. Damn, that show knew how to make me happy. There were never easy moments or truly happy endings.
ReplyDeleteIf you have cable and Soap Net, season 1 is starting again Monday (5p and 6p). Check it for a week and I swear you fall in love. Enrico C. is a genius in all of his roles (well maybe not Just Shoot Me, but those writers were corny) and this is the role that I absolutely fell in love with him as an actor.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope the show gets back to it's roots real soon with Jeremy Carver as show runner. I like that Dean is in purgatory (despite the company he's with). I'm hoping that we get our smart Sammy back since he truly all alone now.

ReplyDeleteOut of this I have to go with Prison Break finale. First season of PB is some of the BEST intense television EVER created.
SN...eh, if it was S3 finale I would agree. But Swan Song was an outright the WORST episode of this entire show, proving that writers have no idea what to do with it. the only redeeming quality was impala shots. Otherwise completely dull and uninspiring finale for completely wasted season. It was an episode that started the ride down into an utter mediocrity for the show.
Yeah, I absolutely hated the season 1 finale of Heroes. One of the worst hours of television I've ever had to endure. After such a promising season too... After that it just turned to utter drivel and got worse from there...

ReplyDeleteI agree about Alastair, he was the best/scariest Demon they have had. Well really only the one Chris played, he was so good. He is also good in Hell On Wheels. You felt about the Apocalypse the way I felt about the Levis, very lame bad guys.

They never planed a lot of things. That's the way tv shows are made. Lost didn't have a plan. I don't believe he had a master plan besides a few thing he had in mind like the final villain and such.
ReplyDeleteWell that story needed to end there. Sera had to start from zero, at least now Jeremy has a foundation from the two previous seasons.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the two previous season were as bad as people think. In my opinion the problem was the lack of a clear path and the lack of a conection between the villain and the boys. Eve and the Leviathans had a connection with Castiel but he was mostly off-screen so we couldn't see that. They should have kept the Leviathans using Castiel's vessel for a few episodes or something like that. And they shouldn't have bring back Bobby, i get it he was a ghost but we still could see him and Dean's revenge got diminished.

ReplyDeleteLOST is a prime example of why shows, especially genre shows, absolutely need to have an overall plan. The X-Files also didn't have a plan and it completely showed in the last few years of that show.

ReplyDeleteWell, the 6th season had 2 things going against it -- 1 was that the Soulless Sam and the messed up brother relationship was actually TOO effective. People immediately shunned it and just became angry and upset by it. Otherwise, the whole season was one big blur...there were too many different loose ends going on in the season, and they killed off and cut short ALOT of possible storyline threads way too quickly. On top of that, the feeling of having no idea what was going on and the weird pacing in some places made it not work well, even if a large amount of the episodes themselves were great in their own way.
ReplyDeleteSeason 7 had a different problem. Unlike in season 6 where everyone immediately hated it for the messed up brother dynamic, this time it started off VERY strong, and set expectations high. Once again there were fantastic episodes here and there, but this time, the main threat took too long over the season and in the end was easily taken out and the whole thing lacked urgency. (Which is strange to me, seeing how those leviathans were pretty damn freaky looking...) In the end, it kinda fell apart in the main storyline in the last part of the season, and sort've pushed the show into a position of next season is looking more promising. (Which is what we had with season 6's surprise ending too...)
They didn't have to go with the biblical storyline that they did. The devil, or a main source of all evil is a world-wide (and varying) concept that they could've used without tapping into the Lucifer character. The devil could've been a totally different devil entirely. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat i could make as a conclusion of Sera's run as a showrunner is that she wasted promising ideas in few episodes, she killed way too many characters which take away the impact and she couldn't make a good mix between mythology episodes and MOTW, in S7 she did way too many MOTW. They weren't bad but it took away the momentum, the supposed "threat" the leviathans were.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling I would have liked seasons 4 and 5 better if they had gone with a non-biblical version. Or actually if they had tackled anybody the budget fit. The Apocalypse on 10 bucks and some creative camera angles was never going to work.
ReplyDeleteI actually liked seasons 6 and 7 a lot better than seasons 4 and 5. However I agree that there needed to be a better connection between the brothers and the Big Bad. I was actually rooting for Cas to be the Leviathan head instead of Dick because then there would be some traction to that part of the story. I am hoping that Crowley will be the Big Bad for the next 2-3 seasons because that's someone the brothers have at least have history with.
ReplyDeleteThe noir theme was a big mistake in season 6. All the red herrings made it so no one knew who the Big Bad was and by the end people had given up on the mytharc anyway. It might have worked a few more seasons along. Unfortunately people were already uneasy about where season 6 was going before it even started. To make the plot purposely hazy just added to the unease in a bad way. They needed to start 6 off with something straight cut. In fact, I think they need to give up the "theme of the season" altogether. Season 7 had the opposite problem in that the entire online fandom knew where we were supposed to be going - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - and instead they started with the ridiculous Amy subplot that tore the brothers apart again. At that point everyone was up in arms because it wasn't going where they said it would. In the end episode-by-episode, both season 6 and 7 were strong. They just lacked cohesiveness between stories.

ReplyDeleteThe Levis were the worst big bad in SPN, but still enjoyed most of season 7.
Still my favorite seasons were 4,5 & 6, not to say I don't still love all the seasons and have watched them all over and over, but dang I loved the Angel/Demon story line.

Yeah. And another think i didn't like was that there isn't an arc of more than one season. A season like this in Buffy worked but we're used to having bigger arcs.
ReplyDeleteI hope Crowley is the definitive Big Bad. I think he is going to be the demon with more appearences in a few more episodes.
I don't know. I'm ok with the way they were handled. More personal. I'm not one of those who think that not showing Lucifer and Michael fighting was anticlimatic, this was Dean and Sam's story so no, maybe anticlimatic for Lucifer and Michael but no for the boys.
