Syfy confirmed it will not be bringing action series Sanctuary back for a fifth season.
The move was not a surprise, in that the show, starring Amanda Tapping (pictured, as her character, Helen Magnus) and executive produced by her, Damian Kindler and Martin Wood, was not part of the network's recently announced upfront slate for 2012-13. Tapping recently told the blog Gateworld that the producers had released the show's studio space in Vancouver because of the delay in ordering a new season, and that the show would not have been ready to return this fall even if Syfy had renewed it.
In a statement, Mark Stern, President, Syfy Original Content and Co-Head, Universal Cable Productions, said: "We're honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques -- including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology -- and Emmy-nominated visual effects. It's been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler."
In the statement, Kindler, Tapping and Wood said: "We couldn't be prouder of the four seasons we made on Sanctuary. We are very grateful for the opportunity and must acknowledge the wonderful work from our cast and crew, the support from our studio, the Beedie Group -- who have been with us right from the start, the networks who worked so hard with us each week, and most of all the fans...we owe so much to the fans.

Unsurprised. It's been pretty much cancelled for a while, considering how long it took to make an 'official' decision. Season 4 was pretty weak but it ended on a nice note, with a lot of potential and a new beginning to bring the show full circle.
ReplyDeleteFirst Eureka, now Sanctuary, why bother watching Syfy??
ReplyDeleteahahahaa what happened to "syfy"(llis) ?? there are no scifi shows left except one?
ReplyDeleteNOOO ;°(
ReplyDeleteTwo Warehouse 13 and Alpha's
ReplyDeletesad! :( but expected after waiting so long!
ReplyDeletei don't even remember now how it ended! a re-watch is necessary!
Oh poop. :(
ReplyDeleteSo depressing. I was just starting to rewatch the whole series... I love it.
ReplyDeleteI agree!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot too surprising. I stopped watching near the end of S3, and didn't even watch any episode of the last season (S4?). They seemed to have lost ideas, or were lacking in writing creativity. Once the writers got rid of that underground "lost city" and wrote out Kate (after already getting rid of another female lead early on in the series), I knew that the end was near. Season 4 sounded awful from the synopses I read. Too bad. This show had some potential and had an interesting story core.
ReplyDeletehahaha! I call it "syfy"(llis) too! What a terrible name for a network!
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, fans got a lot of tv seasons out of their fave shows before being unceremoniously dumped. My personal faves of Stargate SG-1 (10 seasons) and Eureka (a respectable 5 seasons) got quite a few seasons, that may not have lasted as long on other networks, let alone regular broadcast television. Sure, it would've been nice if Syfy had the decency to give each of their longrunning shows a heads up a full season ahead, so that we could've gotten a nice full season to wrap up all the storylines (as Chuck did, and Fringe is getting). "Why bother watching Syfy" you ask? Because I really don't regret having watched those shows. They were great tv, while they lasted. Still, Syfy could stand to lose their core fan base of scifi viewers, who tend to be loyal, if they don't stop these jerk moves).
ReplyDeleteSeriously it should say "Ended" not canceled.
ReplyDeleteSeason 4 finale was pretty final.
In fact I would be enraged on if it was brought for more seasons. That ending was PERFECT. It brought our journey to end, full circle and resolved all the character conflicts. There's nothing left to tell. Sanctuary For None PtII was a perfect and awesome epilogue for this show.
Is there an arc coming toward the end of the season? I'm not saying that trying to be mean, I watched Season 1-2-3 but I gave up season 4 after a couple of really weak and boring episode. The last episode I saw was the episode with the plane and the only thing I remember that was coming later was the 'singing' episode that sounded horrible to me
ReplyDeleteNow i'm wondering if I should bother to watch the end of the serie now that it's over^^;; Is the end got better? Did we see Kate coming back? (I lost a LOT of interest in the show after she left)
canceled by sy/fy but other network will take it give it some time to regroup & organize new ideas
ReplyDeleteNot really. But the final episode had them destroying the Sanctuary and revealed that Magnus had a new, better Sanctuary underground. It mirrored the beginning of the show with her revealing it to Will, using the same language.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it was a rather weak season, using the same storytelling devices over and over and over again. Kate came back but wasn't really featured overly. I thought the show suffered without her interactions, especially with Henry and Biggie.
I agree. It was a perfect ending, they would have stretched it to create a better ending after the one they had.
ReplyDeleteBoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
ReplyDeleteHissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ! ! ! ! !
For me the show had its ending so i'm not surprised. But when are they going to stop with these freaking crappy shows,Ghost Hunters,Ghost Hunters International, Quantum Kitchen, Future car crap, so on and so on.I want my Sci-Fi channel back!
ReplyDeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteI never felt in S4 that there was something that made me wanna know what would happen next :S
I will miss it. With Sanctuary and Eureka gone, all I've got left on Syfy is Warehouse 13.
ReplyDeleteSyFy's taking a page from the NBC Playbook. Gotta Love it.
ReplyDeleteSG-1 got notice and folded their ending into the DVD movie
ReplyDeleteAtlantis got a solid series completion
SGU... they got boned, but had as much to do with MGM's financial troubles as anything else
Eurkea was announced a while back, and is on course for a proper completion (and really, when you need a time travel reboot, you know the writers are having trouble keeping quality up... which they have, but still)
It's still a cable network, so really anything over 3 or 4 season should always be considered for series finale just in case.
Whatever remnants of the Sci-Fi Channel that NBC didn't kill when they rebranded it are in the process of being finished off by Comcast. Ain't mergers fun?
ReplyDeleteToo bad, I thought the show was fun, but the thing I'm really going to miss is the character of Helen Magnus. I was never much a fan of the Sanctuary idea, actually the plot was not bad, it could have been great, but ended up beign just mediocre most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I liked the show, but my love came from Helen Magnus, they really did a wonderful job with this character, I don't know why, but she always fasinated me, of course it has the fact that I've been in love with Amanda Tapping since the first seasons of SG-1, but still, Magnus is in my top five people I would choose to be with in a zombie apocalipse.
ReplyDeleteI really hope they make a new show for Amanda Tapping, maybe a new Stargate series, with people from SG-1, SGA and some new characters, but no one from SGU, I never finished watching the series, but I like to imagine that in the end, Destiny exploded and killed everybody, sorry Eli.
This makes me sad but it did have some closure in the storytelling.
ReplyDeleteBut there's a few good fiction shows on the network. Eureka is ending this year and I'm sad but Haven is the one I think is really underrated on the network. (My other fave is Warehouse 13.)
Just to answer some of the questions here, SyFy got bought out last year, hence the decision to cancel existing shows with a big price tag. However, there are a number of actual science fiction shows debuting this year as well, so it doesn't seem to be as bleak as some of you imagined.
ReplyDeletewarehouse 13 is crap, i have to force myself to watch it. Alphas kind of got a nice flow there... the star of the show is the autistic guy who can see the radio waves, that is very well acted and cooky/ funny... just like how walter holds together fringe (after all who actually cares about peter or olivia in comparison. The freaky astrid from the other side is really good too). I think its cool and healthy to have autistic / brilliant / damaged people as the forefront characters. How more encouraging or accepting could a viewer base be of such issues?
ReplyDeleteStargate Universe flopped in the wake of the closest thing to it: BattleStar rebooted. Even just one season of that would have been enough. I know the CGI is bad and there are some layme concepts in Sanctuary but it really grew on me and i was devastated that it was cancelled, because it started to chow more promise and there where episodes in series 2 i watched over and over again.
Eureka was the best show they had, altho i must admit the timeline reboot was layme. Why is it that we sci fi people are the minority? If more people on this earth had half a brain then scifi would be everywhere.
Im super glad futurama is back, so you win some you loose some, but i dont see anything replacing sanctuary or eureka any time soon.
i know this post is cross network but plz forgive me. Its like..... all the scifi shows make back their money slowly from dvd sales from dedicated fans. We all love star trek, and altho there is not much money to be made from an extra series of Enterprize... you can be sure as hell the money will be made over and over again in dvd sales, many times over. It does seem that the dumbest scifi with crap CGI is still more intelligent and worth watching than the best non scifi show. i just wish more seasons would be given to really intelligent shows like fringe and eureka and sanctuary and stop trying to appeal to the main braindead demographic. Scifi CANT ever appeal to the braindead most popular demographic so dont cancel shows, or make crap scifi shows to try to appeal to them, they will never get it. I actually know people in real life that do not get excited about watching the old starwars on dvd....
i think that if more seasons are given to scifi shows in general then they have more of an opportunity to get good, and to grab the attention of a broader base.
my life wont be complete till i see the new riddick movies and total recall remake.
peace out yall
I'm feeling what your saying, But I am sorry to say this but I really only enjoyed the first two seasons of Sanctuary! But saying that I liked Stargate Universe and I was really naffed off when it was cancelled only because I wanted closure and not little Scenes of a possible future! Your also right in that ScFi Fans like to watch Series over n over again! I am a Star Wars Fan my son is a mad Star Wars fan and I didn't even ram it down is neck!! Well not very often anyway lol!!
ReplyDeleteThe Riddick movie's should have definitely carried on, so a remake SHOULD be awesome!!
