Winterfell: ~ "Oh that's alright then. You let a half-wit escape with a cripple..." - So nice to see Theon kick Black Loren's ass! I did not see myself cheering for Theon this season! XD - I am truly enjoying the more violent and volatile Theon. I never liked the cocky and arrogant version much I guess. - they certainly went there with BRan and Rickon burned and hung on display! Wow!
The North: ~ "Did you pull a kinife on me in the night?" I am so glad that Jon and Ygritte have chemistry on screen since it was such a big part of the books. - Not sure how I feel about another escape and chase. Where has ghost been? I would have loved if Jon whispered like Ygritte did and made a snarky comment in return when Ghost appeared by his side! XD
The Riverlands: ~ "Most girls are idiots" - One could think Arya was a vampire the way she was staring at Tywin's neck! XD - The scenes between Arya and Tywin have just been brilliant, and this one was no exception to me.
~ "Does he need to lie down?" - Maybe "Talisa" does not want to ride to The Crag because her Lord father is in charge there and she has either run off to help the wounded?
~ "He was like a painter. A painter who only used red." - I love how there are so many damn Lannisters around that Jaime does not even recall who Alton is! XD XD - Jaime brought up Baristan Selmy..... Is he going to reappear in this episode or the next? :) - I knew Jaime was going to kill Alton! XD I was thinking no minor character gets a scene this good unless they die in the next scene! XD - Oh how I have missed Jaime!
"What was the name of the wench he was with?" "Brienne!" "No - That wasn't it." XD XD XD XD XD I'm glad to have an episode with multipl Kingslayer scenes!
King's Landing: " You'll be glad of the hateful things I do some day when you're Queen and I'm all that stands between you and your beloved King." - Nice to see the Hound be menacing again instead of just looming in the background. - I liked the first blood scene with Sansa. It was interesting to see Shae truly want to defend Sansa. - Cersei's speech to Sansa was quite nice. Even she realizes Joffrey is unlovable! XD - The scene between Tyrion and Cersei was brilliant! Not only for the fact it was a rare moment of compassion between them, but it was just so well done!
Qarth: ~ You are not your brother. Trust me, Khaleesi." - I liked that Dany rebuked Jorah for almost touching her shoulder as he ws interupting her thoughts. It's nice to see her reminding Mormont of his place. - Pyat Pree is just awesome in the series! XD That multiplying ghimself trick is as awesome as it is disturbing! The man has a look doesn't he! XD
This was a much better episode than last week! Maybe because it had more Jaime? Maybe because it had more Lannisters? Maybe because it had less of the comedic styling of Sam and Edd? Whatever it was that made it so good, I hope they continue it!!!
Thank god, I've finally had reason to vote an "awesome". In a season of mediocre episodes, this one was amazing.
I started a list that stated all my likes and dislikes, but it's easier to say that I liked almost everything. Nevertheless, here's the goods.
Good: - "That's what a prisoner is". Although this episode had a little bit too much Ygritte/Jon, I think that Ygritte is still an amazing character and she really carried the scenes. They did a good job of drawing the two of them together. When Jon shouted that he was Ned's son and she froze, I liked the reality of the situation. He's a First Man, just like her. - As always, Tywin and Arya was good. More importantly, Tywin's insight and the glimpse at his mortality worked really well. It also compliments the later Cersei scene. I found it interesting that they did the inverse of Roose's "m'lord" with [Reek] later on, but whatever. It worked well and as always the two actors played off each other. Tywin telling her she's too clever for her own good really brought it all home. Also, great lore dropping. - Sansa and Sandor had good scenes. I don't think they've sold me on Sandor's cruelty, but the relation between them works out well. - "You know nothing, Jon Snow." Come on. - Ygritte's imitation of Jon and the "then he told me to turn around". Really, she's just an awesome character in a sea of uninspiring female characters. - Every scene with Jaime was amazing. - Tyrion and Cersei speaking was pretty good, it showed them both as being almost siblings like when he didn't know how to comfort her and she didn't know how to accept it. - Jaime's final speech on Jon Snow and Ned's honor. - Dany finally seeing who was behind the abduction. COME ON HOUSE OF THE UNDYING. - The ending itself.
The Meh: - I didn't like Tyrion's semantics of "strategy vs tactics". Not only was it not clear cut, but semantics is a low rung for wit. I expect more from him. - Most scenes with Dany.
The Bad: - The change to the story with the Stark boys. - Robb/Jeyne. UGH. "I'll heal everyone :]" Get real. So corny.
But yeah, it was just a fantastic episode. I was very, very happy to have watched it.
This was a fantastic episode! I continue to love Arya scenes, and I'm becoming more and more interested in Tywin. I didn't think I missed Jaime, but his stuff was fantastic tonight. I also loved the conversation with Tyrion and Cersei. It's easy to forget they're siblings sometimes. I continue to be unimpressed with Dany scenes, though - she was one of my favorite characters last season, but her stuff has all been pretty bland, I think.
He truly was. This was NCW's episode in both name and deed!
I love how they really have Jaime go for the throat if he feels insulted... an undeserved insult that is. You can call him many things but if you question his honor as he sees it, he does not reply in kind. He goes for the quick kill verbally. Just like he would do with his sword.
He is just very much a true "Sword". No slow lingering blows. He cuts fast and deep and true. The way he is shining and gleams in the light, but if you do not know how to handle him it will cut you and if you make the mistake of handling it (or him) improperly too often it could kill you.
Since season 1 I was afraid we were going to get too much "AFFC" Jaime without getting the build up to how despicable he is. But in killing Alton he really reminded us of what a scumbag he is at this point.
More importantly for me though was that we got to see the beginning of the next buddy comedy: Beauty and the Wench.
I had not thought about it in that way, but it is very important to push Jaime to his ultimate lows so that his redemption arc means just that much more. I think his limited appearances this season have been brilliant and done the job well.
I thought we get Jaime commenting tonight "She's the Hound with teats. IF she had teats to speak of" about Brienne, but that can come later easily enough..... I was waiting for it as he looked at her outside the pen though.
Loved the ep. As for the shock ending with the 2 burned corpes, I haven't read the books, but my guess is that those are the 2 Winterfell orphans that were sent there that Bran mentioned when they first came upon the settlement... with the way that they've played up Bran's special dreams of seeing through his wolf's eyes I'm sure that his story has plenty left in it.....
Fantastic. Top 2 episode so far I think. The scenes with Jaime were incredibly captivating. As was the scene with Arya. Great work. Loved the scene with Dany and the 13 towards the end. Creepy, effective, and it left me wanting more. Theon's storyline right now also has me wanting more. I like the progression and I like how they played it at the end. But I agree, there's no way that Bran is one of them.
I would indeed claw another gal's eyes out to shack up with Jon Snow. I loved this episode, I got my dose of Jon and Dany (and even a little Jamie). I never really liked Arya Stark in the books or even last season but her scenes with Tywin are brilliant! A "softer" side of Cersei who would have thought? This season is going by way too fast.
Awesome episode, as always. I agree with everyone here saying how great the scenes with Jaime were, I had nearly forgotten he was there since we haven't seen in him in awhile. Well done ... *insert actor name here* ... you make me despise you even though I figure I'll eventually grow to like your character.
Cersei and Tywin showing some sort of humanity in their nefarious nature threw me for a bit (in a good way). Cersei admitting how awful Joffrey can be and the scene with Tyrion was truly amazing. Tywin's scenes with Arya almost make me want to like Tywin but I still hate him, but the interaction between the two is impeccable.
Obviously there's no way they would kill Bran and Rickon like that, off-screen, just no.
And as much as I like to continue hear about Ned Stark, I have to raise my fist at those who speak ill of the honorable man (don't care what people say about him with Jon Snow).
It was jarring to see a young woman as old as the actress playing Sansa freak out about starting her period. I love the actress and the job she's doing playing Sansa but she is the most unconvincing young teen I've ever seen. The change in the character for season two has made the age difference between the actress and character less obvious to me, so being reminded that the character is so young was really jarring. I take i Thon hung the two orphan boys.
With all the story they hav going this season I was surprised to find we only get 10 eps.
I enjoyed it, glad to have Jaime back, He's one of my favourites. Nit sure how I feel about his killing Alton, Jaime may be a kingslayer, but he is NOT a kinslayer. Plus we FINALLY got Jaime and Brienne in a scene together.
Not a fan of the whole Ygritte/Jon thing, I think she may annoy me more in the show than she did in the books (and I didn't think that was possible).
Glad to see Dany put Jorah in his place, am I the only one who thinks that Doreahs disappearance isn't because she's dead but because she helped steal the dragons.
One thing I love about this show (and the books) is that you get to know so many of the characters, even the ones who are about to die. I am not a big fan of losing characters I like, but it gets so tiresome in every other show where the only people who ever die are characters that you barely know their name, if that.
For a change it is nice to have a show where you aren't constantly thinking "He will get out of this danger, he always does..." There is no star who is too important to kill here.
Agree, especially with the last part. I get so angry whenever anyone claims he wasn't honorable man! That's the one thing you can say about him with certainty.
I had to vote awesome for this episode simply because Jaime was back. I love all his scenes, but ofcourse I wish his last scene with Catelyn was as powerfull as in the books. They kind of stole half the scene last season, but it was still brilliant.
"you know nothing, John Snow". I love all the scenes in the North. The landscape is beautiful and Ygritte seems true to her character. They changed a few things, but it seems like it is working out quite well.
Arya and Tywin are good, I really enjoy those scenes.
I didn´t really like seeing the softer side of Cersei. It just seemed wrong to me that she would open up to Tyrion. And that she would admit to Joffrey being cruel doesn´t seem like Cersei at all. Why would she be kind to Sansa?!
The actress is only 16, I think she started when she was 15? That's a little late for the modern day to start her period, but Sansa in the book got hers when she was 13.
I'm unsure what you expect, I guess. I think the character is supposed to be around 15 considering the age jumps/shifts.
Since more than half of the later books is someone wondering how long it'll take Jaime to kill another member of their family "when he returns". I think it's completely possible for Jaime to kill a member of his family, and there's so many Lannisters I doubt he'd have much grief with it. I mean, he wasn't really bothered when Cleos died. I also doubt Cleos will be in the show, so I don't think that's a spoiler.
She's "kind" to Sansa in the books, too. She also admits that Joffrey has a mean side to him, unlike Tommen who's sweet.
As for why she'd open up to Tyrion... well, Lancel's weak, their father is afield, and Jaime is captured. Tyrion is the only one she has left and she's doing this after he's complimented her other two children (claiming that her incest is not the cause for Joffrey's vileness, or at least that it didn't ruin all of her kids). I dislike characters that are cartoonishly good (Ned Stark) or evil (Ramsay), so it's nice to when they add flavor to others. In A Dance with Dragons and a Feast for Crows we get to see some glimpses of humanity anyway, so they're just sprinkling it in now.
That's only one part of what I said in a series of things that showed Jaime doesn't particularly value the lives of lesser Lannisters. Again, Tyrion and Cersei both speculated on how long it'd take for Jaime to kill Lancel. It really isn't out of his character.
What do you believe supports him not being a kinslayer? Above all else, Jaime loves Cersei. To get back to her I'm sure he'd do anything.
He had opportunities to kill Lancel but he didn't take them even after he found out that Lancel had been 'servicing' Cersei in his absence.
Although I will concede that it's been a while since I've read the earlier books the fact that he has yet to kill any member of his family outside the tv show (that I remember) supports him not being a kinslayer. Just because other characters believe him capable doesn't mean it's something he would actually do.
Did Theon really kill the yougest Starks? I cannot believe it! Maybe he put some others kids bodies on display to save his reputation?
Love, love the scenes between Jon and Ygritte. I hope we will learn more about the wildlings.
Love even more the scenes between Arya and Tywinn. He know she is from the north, seems to know she is lying about her identity but let her assist to every important meeting anyway. He is careless! Good for Arya he seems to have a soft spot for her.
I cannot figure the Hound motivations. Is he really a bloodthirsty killer? Is he in love with the "bird" or did he made a vow to protect her?
Cersei or how to be a mother and realise your son is a monster. She may have unleash and crowded the monster and be quite a monster herself, but I feel for her. I Hope she will meet Jaimie again. Even the vilains have the right to love.
Talking about Jaimie. Has he a death wish or what taunting Catelyn like that? Are we supposed to belive she will kill him? I bet she will free him. He is her only hope to see her daughters again.
I love layered and shaded characters like GRRM fills his world with, but I really did not mind the pure good Ned or the pure evil Ramsay in the books. Most of GRRM's characters to have shades of grey and many layers and I think that even in a world of grey, some people will fall on the extreme ends of the spectrum.
Plus I think Ned has many faults honestly. He had at least one affair (or he lied about it to protect Jon's real mother) and I always saw his extreme honor as a fault I guess.
MY guess is that Shae realizes what it's like to be a caged bird (continuing the Sansa=bird line) and sees the life that Sansa has in front of her as the King's whore (even if she were to wear a crown) and it strikes a protective moment in her.
Plus I have always felt that D&D have a better grip on Shae's backstory than we did reading the books. Maybe there is another connection we are unaware of. Is Shae a Lady on the run from her family, or maybe from a forced marriage to some unworthy husband?
Oh and I amost forgot: Sir Jorah ... just when I started to be tired of another scene having him stand like a puppy in love behind his Kaalesi, we learn that he has betrayed her? Wow, When, where, how? Did I miss something or is it a mystery not revealed yet?
Love this show. Please do not gag Jaimie. He uses his tongue like a sword. Must run in the family :-)
I'm not sure what to make of Doreah's absence just yet... I can see her being part of Pree and Daxos' plans to steal the dragons.... I can also see her in hiding and waiting for a moment where she can come out and go back to Dany.
Honestly though I'm still not 100% sure that Pyatt Pree has the dragons like he says. It's possible he tried to steal the dragons and was thwarted by the lone hooded figure seen carrying the dragons last episode. I think he may be taking advantage of the situation to lure Daenerys to the House of the Undying.
Well the fact of the matter is we are never quite certain if Ned truly did have an affair with Wyla or any other women.... or if Jon is actually his.
Jaime's argument falls flat if Ned took Jon in to protect his real mother or father.
Although I think Ned's stubborn "always-do-the-right-thing-ness" was a fault that led to his death and many of the events in the saga which could have been easily avoided.
I agree! I love that even the lesser characters are of some importance and can play parts in the larger story, and I love that even the greater characters are mortal and can die at any time.
Sorry if you have not read the books! Most characters in GRRM's world have redemption arcs if they are seemingly bad. Likewise most of his seemingly good characters have arcs that show they have faults too. It's part of what I like about his writing.
Plus the site is SpoilerTV. I always try to avoid direct spoilers, but it can be hard to discuss things in any more vague sense honestly.
Yeah, I get it. I of course like the notion that there is redemption for seemingly bad characters (though Jaime is currently so ruthlessly written and portrayed, I imagine only a giganticly bad act or event could get him started on redemption). I actually don't care that much about spoilers as such, and I have decided to read a book after the season is over (and do so for each season). In truth, you didn't ruin anything (actually, come to think of it, you made me look forward to it happening). On a side note, when it comes to good and bad characters, now more than at the end of the last season if feel sorry for Ned Stark. Almost everyone thinks of him as a naive, pathetic fool. His legacy now lies with Robb, but his name is, I fear, permanently scorned.
I agree, it´s a lot more interesting with characters that holds both good and bad. That is why characters like Tyrion and Jaime are so interesting. Ramsay really is true evil and Ned...well, I see him as both good and bad. He does cheat on his wife and kill people. I don´t know about Cersei, I just never liked her in the books. I think she seems weaker in season 2 and in the books I remember her as getting worse in every book.
That is exactly what makes GRRM´s books so brilliant, the characters that seems real and has different shadeds. Also they develop, some times in one direction, sometimes in the other. That´s why I love Jaime´s character so much, because he changes both mentally and physicly through the books.
Yes, it was really good to see Jaime and Brienne in the same scene. I´m not sure what to think of him being a kinslayer either. All the scenes were brilliant though.
That is true, there is a lot of mystery concerning Wyla correct (I'm not too far into the books yet). So Jon could actually not be his, I hadn't considered that.
I don't see Ned's stubborn "always-do-the-right-thing-ness" as a fault though, he stayed true to his beliefs up until he feared for the fates of his daughters. Yes, it was what led to his death but that doesn't make him any less of a good person.
- How awesome is Quaithe! She's like a Jaqen to me: little screentime, not all that important alltogether, but soo awesome. - Pyat Pree is just the scariest dude out there. It's so weird to have no idea where the story in Qarth is going. - Catelyn/Brienne/Jaime is just made of win. So excited about the coming story arcs there. - It's quite rewarding to see Cersei realise that Joff's a prick. - Theon came across as very lost and nervous to me, like he's just marching to his doom. Man's a trainwreck waiting to happen.
Everything north of the wall is about to get really interesting. I find the wildlings very interesting aswell and there is a lot more coming on that front.
Must be a fantastic feeling watching this show without having read the books. The questions you have will be answered soon. :-)
I thought the same thing about Theon and the Stark kids - if he couldn't find them, he tried to save face by stringing some other kids up instead. It's awful that I'm hoping for that, but Bran has always been one of my favorite characters on the show, so I hope they're still alive and fleeing somewhere!
Sansa was 12 in the book when she got her period, actually. The TV Sansa is probably around 14, it's still normal to get period at this age. Yes, the actress is 16, the problem is she's so tall and looks very grown-up already. Last season she still looked like a child, I would've easily believed in her flowering back then, now yeah it looked a bit unnatural but at least they were true to the book. There is really nothing they could do about Sophie growing up so fast.
You did not miss anything that showed Theon killing Bran and Rickon (poor Rickon always gets left out of all the reindeer games), but that is their bodies on display according to Theon yes.
I thought the only reason Sansa freaked out about her period was only because now she can bare children, which she obviously didn't want Joffey or Cersi to find out about. That's was my take on it.
But knowing Theon isn't it possible that they are someone else.I really liked Bran,i would hate to see that happen to him.Hey what happened to the big guy (forgot his name sorry) i can't see him leaving Bran to fend for himself?
They did not show an encounter between Osha, Hodor, Bran and Rickon with Theon's men so the viewer is not supposed to know what happened to them all yet. However, being that Hodor and Osha were servants they would not be shown off to the onlookers like Bran and Rickon would being that they were both Starks of Winterfell.
I don't really want to directly answer what happens in the books since you non-book readers have the joy of experiencing everything as it unfolds. Plus, one never knows what changes D&D may make from the book....
I understand :) I hope to be a Reader by the time next season rolls around. Unless of coarse they plan on concentrating on the 3rd book, two books aren't a problem but 3,i'm not sure about? Thanks D! :)
I should probably clarify that I have NOT read the books. During the first season because what I was complaining to a friend (who has read the books) that I thought the casting was off with Sansa. I was seeing 14 or 15 year old actress carrying herself as a 14 or 15 year old delivering dialog that sounded like a 12 year old. After watching a little longer I decided that it wasn't the actress so much as the writing. My friend explained that several of the "child" characters had been aged some for the television version. I think walking that tightrope has been more difficult with Sansa because her age plays into several plot points.
The point I was trying to make was that this season I hadn't thought about it at all...until that scene.
This season I feel like I'm more aware that I only get so spend a couple of minutes on my favorite stories (Arya, Daenerys, and Jon Snow) and the ep is over.
I read the first 3 books between season 1 and 2 without problems, I would've read 4 or even all 5, but I made myself stop because it was stealing too much of my study time :P believe me, once you get hooked, you won't be able to stop after Clash, especially that A Storm of Swords is just beyond awesome.
Thanks! I'm an avid reader myself.i just wasn't sure if i could fit a third book before the new season starts.I'm on this site most of the day,but now with the nice weather i'll be doing other things that will cut into everything i do.Yes i'm sure i'll read all the books, its just a matter of when,ha! Everyone i know raves about it.I had started reading the first one when i had a mishap and it wound up in the sink....
Loved it. One of the best episodes of the season for me.
I'm really enjoying the Tywin/Arya dynamic. I still have no idea where they're planning to take Arya's storyline from here, but it's definitely one of the changes they've made from the book that works 100%, especially considering how big and significant the change is. Thank God Tywin made himself clear that he knows she's not who she claims she is. I really do wonder what they're planning to do about it later. As far as Harrenhall goes, it was the first time I took a good look at Gregor and yeah, he's The Tree that Rides definitely. I miss the old Mountain.
I loved Jon and Ygritte's sex chat, although I'm still not sure if I dig the actress. Poor Jon is beyond cute in his awkwardness. I'm curious to see where they'll go from here, cause Jon being captured by the wildlings this soon is definitely a big alteration from the book.
I still feel for Theon, the stupid bastard, poor guy struggles so much it's painful to watch. But yeah, I still hate him sincerely. Gotta give credit to Alfie, though, his portrayal of Theon is perfect. Also, it was nice to hear the kid who plays Rickon actually has a voice. He gets like what, one line per season so far?
Loved the Sansa/Sandor scene, but no wonder considering how much I love this "relationship". It bugs me a little how they've cut all of their ACoK dialogues into a minute long scene, but gotta give it to them that I absolutely loved the line: "You'll be glad of the hateful things I do someday when you're queen and I'm all that stands between you and your beloved king", damn, I wish it had been in the book! Also, Rory McCann should definitely get more lines, the way he speaks is to die for! So Sansa got her period. I thought they were going to skip this and deal with it off screen considering how much the actress has grown, but I actually really loved the scene. Surprisingly, I really love the unexpected Sansa/Shae bonding. I actually like Shae much more with Sansa than with Tyrion.
Jaime scenes were awesome, especially his comments when he first saw Brienne. Can't wait for more of these two. Also loved the fury of Karstark and others when they re-captured Jaime. Ah, the Northerners. The whole storyline was very intense in this episode. Gotta love his logics when he proves Catelyn he had more honor than Ned because he never slept with another woman. All I could think of during the scene was the Lyanna hypothesis, actually.
The Robb/Talisa thing is probably the worst aspect of this season. I just don't get it and I don't think I ever will. We're 3 episodes from the end of the season and I'm still confused about Talisa and who she actually is and why the hell couldn't they just have Jeyne Westerling as she was in the book. I don't even see the purpose of this change. Just WEIRD.
Ok, gotta say I actually liked a Daenerys scene in this episode (first time this season). The murder scene when she is told to come to House of the Undying. Wow, I didn't see that coming. Great stuff.
I am not sure why they have played this game with "Talisa" either. She is Jeyne Westerling from the books in essence. Why the big charade?
I mean she is a Lady who tends to the wounded and is from the Crag. A point made apparent by her unease at going to the Crag with Robb. I guess they made her run away from home to be a battle field nurse? I find it more than silly, but I guess they wanted to update and make her a strong independent woman. It just seems like they cannot have any naive traditional woman like there would be in Westeros....
I guess if they waited for Robb to be at the Crag before meeting her we would have missed those 3 brilliant scenes with Talisa so far this year! *please read sarcasm*
I loved the murder of the 13 too! I think it was the first Qarth scene I liked as well and I guess maybe that's because it had so little to do with Dany. Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Pyatt Pree made that scene... well all 15 Pyatt Prees or however many total there were! XD
Sad to say, but the less of Daenerys this year the better. I cannot tolerate her whining and expectations that the world should be hers since she is the Stormborn and the Mother of Dragons..... *yawn*
I think that Daenerys storyline is getting really interesting. She is the character that evolved more. From a afraid girl to a self-confidence queen. And I think she has right to claim the Iron Throne. In any case, she is better that that hateful brat or that creepy Stannis.
I think the problem is Daenerys evolved too fast. Basically halfway A Game of Thrones (and season 1) she was exactly the way she is now already and she hasn't really been changing ever since. I also find her whining, along with her constand title-bragging really annoying. That, and she doesn't even really know what she's willing to fight for. She's never even been to Westeros, she knows shit about it and all she talks about is that everybody should just give her things because she's a Targaryen and has some dragons (which were given to her, by the way).
Of all the original girl characters (Arya, Sansa and Dany) I actually find Sansa the most interesting because she's changing very slowly and gradually, but effectively. Like I said, for me Dany changed too fast. Arya is amazing and I love her, but she hasn't changed at all (so far, at least, but let's give her time to grow up, she's still a kid).
Anyone is better than Joffrey the jughead! XD That tiny little crown so makes him look like Jughead from the Archie comics!!! http://www.topimagesearches.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Jughead-Jones-picture.jpg
The other thing that makes Daenerys better than the books to many is the fact that her story is the most different from the books. For many readers it is interesting to be experiencing things for the first time as they watch the series on TV.
I think that issue is even more highlighted by the series!
In the books her Season One evolution was more slowly built up and really culminated in the dragons birth... or a little before in the scene where she took Drogo outside to have sex in front of everyone.
In the series it seemed to happen halfway through the season so we got used to her as a Khaleesi. Then when Season 2 began she went backwards. She was no longer the leader that understood how things worked. She suddenly is a scared little girl throwing tantrums and demanding what is hers just like her brother did before her.
The Daenerys at the end of last season would have slapped this season's Dany and told her to grow up!
I think Sansa of the books evolves the most and is one of my favorites by the most recent book. Arya starts off so fun but then loses a lot of her charm and her page time in the later books.
However I do not like the Sansa of the series nearly as much as in the books. I just do not like how she is obviously discontent as she pretends to be the good little bird. In the books she was more believable in her ladylike facade and I found that to be far more interesting. I think it also made her come off as more mature and a real player.... unlike series Sansa that is seemingly pouting constantly.
I still like the series Sansa, though she's truly not as much fascinating as the book one, that's true. I found myself frown several times when the TV Sansa said something the book Sansa would never let out of her mouth. The book Sansa really comes off as the proper, delicate little lady, whereas the show Sansa is... yeah, pouting is a good word.
Since I haven't read the second book yet I cannot really enjoy the beyond the wall sequences. For me they just divert our attention from the actual 'clash of kings'. There were long scenes in the wild cold Iceland, all right. But where were Stannis Baratheon and his witch?
That description of Joffrey is so dead on that I almost sputtered water all over my keyboard.
Daenerys' story was the element that got me to really get into the series (I have not read the books) firstly because the world she was stepping in to was nothing like the medieval societies of so so so many stories I've read and watched. It was fresh.
And her growth has been interesting to me. She's trying to fake being strong and secure in what she's doing and it's all bravado.
My biggest disappoint of this season is that the way the season is designed a couple of the stories ( my favs it seems) only get 4 or 5 minutes per week.
I can see where that would be very frustrating to watch (your favorite stories getting little time I mean).
It's actually part of what I like about the books. The saga is about more than one character's journey any character can die because the story continues to tell the tale of Westeros. Just through a different POV.
It does make for a very unusual TV series in that regard though since most viewers bond with characters and want to follow specific characters more than the bigger story. It's part of what I was interested in seeing played out on TV and how people would react to so many characters with few getting a lot of time.
Next year is where it will get really interesting... and spread out even more - 2 more new regions! XD
I just figured out what it is. I love day time soap operas. They use the same general format...a large canvas of characters and multiple story lines to service. The difference (and I think an expectation that I didn't realize I had until just now) is that in a daytime soap they play with the balance of story lines in an episode. In other words Monday's episode may give 70% of the episode to Story A and 30% to Story B and Tuesday's episode may give 60% to Story B, 20% to Story C and 20% to Story A.
What GoT seems to do is maintain the same balance, for the most part, in each episode. I think what I've been expecting is that I'd get an ep here and there that would have more of Daney and Jon's stories and less of the war story.
This book is definitely the story about the War of Five Kings nad the other stories suffer for it. Next season should be more Jon heavy thankfully. I love the beyond the wall stuff too. I'm not sure how Daenerys's arcs will play out.
It seems like they have changed Dany's story the most.... but not in any critical way so far.
I need to catch up with season 2 ASAP! I love this show and am really mad Sean Bean died!! That little prick Geoffrey or whatever his name is ....!!!! I haven't seen season 2 yet, but hope he gets tortured!
I agree! I love that even the lesser characters are of some importance and can play parts in the larger story, and I love that even the greater characters are mortal and can die at any time.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Winterfell:
ReplyDelete~ "Oh that's alright then. You let a half-wit escape with a cripple..."
- So nice to see Theon kick Black Loren's ass! I did not see myself cheering for Theon this season! XD
- I am truly enjoying the more violent and volatile Theon. I never liked the cocky and arrogant version much I guess.
- they certainly went there with BRan and Rickon burned and hung on display! Wow!
The North:
~ "Did you pull a kinife on me in the night?"
I am so glad that Jon and Ygritte have chemistry on screen since it was such a big part of the books.
- Not sure how I feel about another escape and chase. Where has ghost been? I would have loved if Jon whispered like Ygritte did and made a snarky comment in return when Ghost appeared by his side! XD
The Riverlands:
~ "Most girls are idiots"
- One could think Arya was a vampire the way she was staring at Tywin's neck! XD
- The scenes between Arya and Tywin have just been brilliant, and this one was no exception to me.
~ "Does he need to lie down?"
- Maybe "Talisa" does not want to ride to The Crag because her Lord father is in charge there and she has either run off to help the wounded?
~ "He was like a painter. A painter who only used red."
- I love how there are so many damn Lannisters around that Jaime does not even recall who Alton is! XD XD
- Jaime brought up Baristan Selmy..... Is he going to reappear in this episode or the next? :)
- I knew Jaime was going to kill Alton! XD
I was thinking no minor character gets a scene this good unless they die in the next scene! XD
- Oh how I have missed Jaime!
"What was the name of the wench he was with?"
"Brienne!"
"No - That wasn't it." XD XD XD XD XD
I'm glad to have an episode with multipl Kingslayer scenes!
King's Landing:
" You'll be glad of the hateful things I do some day when you're Queen and I'm all that stands between you and your beloved King."
- Nice to see the Hound be menacing again instead of just looming in the background.
- I liked the first blood scene with Sansa. It was interesting to see Shae truly want to defend Sansa.
- Cersei's speech to Sansa was quite nice. Even she realizes Joffrey is unlovable! XD
- The scene between Tyrion and Cersei was brilliant! Not only for the fact it was a rare moment of compassion between them, but it was just so well done!
Qarth:
~ You are not your brother. Trust me, Khaleesi."
- I liked that Dany rebuked Jorah for almost touching her shoulder as he ws interupting her thoughts. It's nice to see her reminding Mormont of his place.
- Pyat Pree is just awesome in the series! XD
That multiplying ghimself trick is as awesome as it is disturbing!
ReplyDeleteI started a list that stated all my likes and dislikes, but it's easier to say that I liked almost everything. Nevertheless, here's the goods.
Good:
- "That's what a prisoner is".
The Meh:
- I didn't like Tyrion's semantics of "strategy vs tactics". Not only was it not clear cut, but semantics is a low rung for wit. I expect more from him.
- Most scenes with Dany.
The Bad:
- The change to the story with the Stark boys.
- Robb/Jeyne. UGH. "I'll heal everyone :]" Get real. So corny.
But yeah, it was just a fantastic episode. I was very, very happy to have watched it.
Sorry, no way Bran is dead. I have not read the books but my money is on those corpses being the "orphans." ...there were many hints.
ReplyDeleteI think it has to be "more Jaime". He was amazing in every scene.
ReplyDeleteThis was a fantastic episode!
ReplyDeleteHe truly was. This was NCW's episode in both name and deed!
ReplyDeleteI love how they really have Jaime go for the throat if he feels insulted... an undeserved insult that is.
ReplyDeleteMore importantly for me though was that we got to see the beginning of the next buddy comedy: Beauty and the Wench.
I had not thought about it in that way, but it is very important to push Jaime to his ultimate lows so that his redemption arc means just that much more. I think his limited appearances this season have been brilliant and done the job well.
ReplyDeleteI thought we get Jaime commenting tonight "She's the Hound with teats.
ReplyDeleteFantastic. Top 2 episode so far I think.
ReplyDeleteThe scenes with Jaime were incredibly captivating.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode, I got my dose of Jon and Dany (and even a little Jamie).
I never really liked Arya Stark in the books or even last season but her scenes with Tywin are brilliant!
A "softer" side of Cersei who would have thought?
This season is going by way too fast.
The constant mentions of Ned Stark makes it feel as if he was never gone, I love that, him being a constant presence.
ReplyDeleteAwesome episode, as always. I agree with everyone here saying how great the scenes with Jaime were, I had nearly forgotten he was there since we haven't seen in him in awhile. Well done ... *insert actor name here* ... you make me despise you even though I figure I'll eventually grow to like your character.
ReplyDeleteCersei and Tywin showing some sort of humanity in their nefarious nature threw me for a bit (in a good way).
Man that was Awesome! Loved the changes in Qarth. Loved the entire episode actually.
ReplyDeleteExcept that Jaime is now a Kinslayer as well as a Kingslayer and that the Catelyn scene near the end happened before the final scene.
I love the scenes with Arya and Tywin Lannister.
ReplyDeleteIt was jarring to see a young woman as old as the actress playing Sansa freak out about starting her period.
Redemption arc??? Spoilers, much?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it, glad to have Jaime back, He's one of my favourites. Nit sure how I feel about his killing Alton, Jaime may be a kingslayer, but he is NOT a kinslayer. Plus we FINALLY got Jaime and Brienne in a scene together.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the whole Ygritte/Jon thing, I think she may annoy me more in the show than she did in the books (and I didn't think that was possible).
ReplyDeleteFor a change it is nice to have a show where you aren't constantly thinking "He will get out of this danger, he always does..." There is no star who is too important to kill here.
Agree, especially with the last part.
ReplyDeleteI get so angry whenever anyone claims he wasn't honorable man! That's the one thing you can say about him with certainty.
I had to vote awesome for this episode simply because Jaime was back. I love all his scenes, but ofcourse I wish his last scene with Catelyn was as powerfull as in the books. They kind of stole half the scene last season, but it was still brilliant.
ReplyDelete"you know nothing, John Snow".
If honorable means "refusing to do what needs to be done on the pretense of personal honor", then yeah I guess he's honorable.
ReplyDeleteLet's put it this way. If Ned had been in Jaime's position when Aerys was king, then most of King's Landing would be dead.
Yeah, I figured Alton was about to go.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I get what you mean. Now there won't be the pretense of "she was mad with grief", so...
The actress is only 16, I think she started when she was 15? That's a little late for the modern day to start her period, but Sansa in the book got hers when she was 13.
ReplyDeleteI'm unsure what you expect, I guess. I think the character is supposed to be around 15 considering the age jumps/shifts.
I find it interesting you say that.
ReplyDeleteSince more than half of the later books is someone wondering how long it'll take Jaime to kill another member of their family "when he returns". I think it's completely possible for Jaime to kill a member of his family, and there's so many Lannisters I doubt he'd have much grief with it. I mean, he wasn't really bothered when Cleos died. I also doubt Cleos will be in the show, so I don't think that's a spoiler.
Jaime's #1 priority is getting back to Cersei.
She's "kind" to Sansa in the books, too. She also admits that Joffrey has a mean side to him, unlike Tommen who's sweet.
ReplyDeleteAs for why she'd open up to Tyrion... well, Lancel's weak, their father is afield, and Jaime is captured.
Yeah but there's a difference between not being bothered by the death of a family member and DOING the killing.
ReplyDeleteThat's only one part of what I said in a series of things that showed Jaime doesn't particularly value the lives of lesser Lannisters.
ReplyDeleteAgain, Tyrion and Cersei both speculated on how long it'd take for Jaime to kill Lancel. It really isn't out of his character.
What do you believe supports him not being a kinslayer? Above all else, Jaime loves Cersei. To get back to her I'm sure he'd do anything.
Is it really a spoiler? Now you know Jaime lives through ACOK, I guess, but... he's never really in danger of dying in it.
ReplyDeleteHe had opportunities to kill Lancel but he didn't take them even after he found out that Lancel had been 'servicing' Cersei in his absence.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I will concede that it's been a while since I've read the earlier books the fact that he has yet to kill any member of his family outside the tv show (that I remember) supports him not being a kinslayer. Just because other characters believe him capable doesn't mean it's something he would actually do.
Did Theon really kill the yougest Starks? I cannot believe it!
ReplyDeleteMaybe he put some others kids bodies on display to save his reputation?
ReplyDeletePlus I think Ned has many faults honestly.
ReplyDeletePlus I have always felt that D&D have a better grip on Shae's backstory than we did reading the books.
ReplyDeleteWow, When, where, how? Did I miss something or is it a mystery not revealed yet?
Love this show.
Please do not gag Jaimie. He uses his tongue like a sword. Must run in the family :-)
I'm not sure what to make of Doreah's absence just yet...
ReplyDeleteI can see her being part of Pree and Daxos' plans to steal the dragons....
I think that Jaime's honor code does not extend to the lesser Lannisters or even very far outside of his immediate family honestly.
ReplyDeleteIn Westeros there is a big difference between family by name like distant cousins and family by blood such as siblings and parents.
Ten episodes move so, so fast!
ReplyDeleteEven if I expect it, by the time Episode 5 roles in and I realize the season is half done I am shocked! XD
Well the fact of the matter is we are never quite certain if Ned truly did have an affair with Wyla or any other women.... or if Jon is actually his.
ReplyDeleteJaime's argument falls flat if Ned took Jon in to protect his real mother or father.
Although I think Ned's stubborn "always-do-the-right-thing-ness" was a fault that led to his death and many of the events in the saga which could have been easily avoided.
I agree!
ReplyDeleteI love that even the lesser characters are of some importance and can play parts in the larger story, and I love that even the greater characters are mortal and can die at any time.
Sorry if you have not read the books! Most characters in GRRM's world have redemption arcs if they are seemingly bad. Likewise most of his seemingly good characters have arcs that show they have faults too. It's part of what I like about his writing.
ReplyDeletePlus the site is SpoilerTV. I always try to avoid direct spoilers, but it can be hard to discuss things in any more vague sense honestly.
Jorah was spying on Daenerys for Varys.
ReplyDeleteHe reported back that she was pregnant and that led to the first assassination attempt on her.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, when it comes to good and bad characters, now more than at the end of the last season if feel sorry for Ned Stark.
ReplyDeleteI don´t know about Cersei, I just never liked her in the books. I think she seems weaker in season 2 and in the books I remember her as getting worse in every book.
That is exactly what makes GRRM´s books so brilliant, the characters that seems real and has different shadeds. Also they develop, some times in one direction, sometimes in the other.
ReplyDeleteThat´s why I love Jaime´s character so much, because he changes both mentally and physicly through the books.
Yes, it was really good to see Jaime and Brienne in the same scene. I´m not sure what to think of him being a kinslayer either. All the scenes were brilliant though.
ReplyDeleteThat is true, there is a lot of mystery concerning Wyla correct (I'm not too far into the books yet). So Jon could actually not be his, I hadn't considered that.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Ned's stubborn "always-do-the-right-thing-ness" as a fault though, he stayed true to his beliefs up until he feared for the fates of his daughters. Yes, it was what led to his death but that doesn't make him any less of a good person.
- How awesome is Quaithe! She's like a Jaqen to me: little screentime, not all that important alltogether, but soo awesome.
ReplyDelete- Pyat Pree is just the scariest dude out there.
Great ep!
Everything north of the wall is about to get really interesting. I find the wildlings very interesting aswell and there is a lot more coming on that front.
ReplyDeleteMust be a fantastic feeling watching this show without having read the books.
ReplyDeleteDarque, did Theons kill Bran? i missed that part washing the dishes and all i saw were 2 burnt bodies hanging there?
ReplyDeleteSansa was 12 in the book when she got her period, actually.
ReplyDeleteYou did not miss anything that showed Theon killing Bran and Rickon (poor Rickon always gets left out of all the reindeer games), but that is their bodies on display according to Theon yes.
ReplyDeleteRight! How did I forget that. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHe would be better to confess to her before she learn it from someone else.
I thought the only reason Sansa freaked out about her period was only because now she can bare children, which she obviously didn't want Joffey or Cersi to find out about. That's was my take on it.
ReplyDeleteBut knowing Theon isn't it possible that they are someone else.I really liked Bran,i would hate to see that happen to him.Hey what happened to the big guy (forgot his name sorry) i can't see him leaving Bran to fend for himself?
ReplyDeleteThey did not show an encounter between Osha, Hodor, Bran and Rickon with Theon's men so the viewer is not supposed to know what happened to them all yet. However, being that Hodor and Osha were servants they would not be shown off to the onlookers like Bran and Rickon would being that they were both Starks of Winterfell.
ReplyDeleteI don't really want to directly answer what happens in the books since you non-book readers have the joy of experiencing everything as it unfolds. Plus, one never knows what changes D&D may make from the book....
I understand :) I hope to be a Reader by the time next season rolls around. Unless of coarse they plan on concentrating on the 3rd book, two books aren't a problem but 3,i'm not sure about? Thanks D! :)
ReplyDeleteI should probably clarify that I have NOT read the books.
ReplyDeleteThe point I was trying to make was that this season I hadn't thought about it at all...until that scene.
This season I feel like I'm more aware that I only get so spend a couple of minutes on my favorite stories (Arya, Daenerys, and Jon Snow) and the ep is over.
ReplyDeleteI read the first 3 books between season 1 and 2 without problems, I would've read 4 or even all 5, but I made myself stop because it was stealing too much of my study time :P believe me, once you get hooked, you won't be able to stop after Clash, especially that A Storm of Swords is just beyond awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteLoved it. One of the best episodes of the season for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying the Tywin/Arya dynamic.
ReplyDeleteI mean she is a Lady who tends to the wounded and is from the Crag.
*yawn*
Really impressed with all the Qarth situation.I really want to see how it's gonna end this for Daenerys.
ReplyDeleteI think that Daenerys storyline is getting really interesting. She is the character that evolved more. From a afraid girl to a self-confidence queen. And I think she has right to claim the Iron Throne. In any case, she is better that that hateful brat or that creepy Stannis.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem is Daenerys evolved too fast.
ReplyDeleteOf all the original girl characters (Arya, Sansa and Dany) I actually find Sansa the most interesting because she's changing very slowly and gradually, but effectively. Like I said, for me Dany changed too fast. Arya is amazing and I love her, but she hasn't changed at all (so far, at least, but let's give her time to grow up, she's still a kid).
Anyone is better than Joffrey the jughead! XD
ReplyDeleteThat tiny little crown so makes him look like Jughead from the Archie comics!!!

The other thing that makes Daenerys better than the books to many is the fact that her story is the most different from the books. For many readers it is interesting to be experiencing things for the first time as they watch the series on TV.
I think that issue is even more highlighted by the series!
ReplyDeleteIn the books her Season One evolution was more slowly built up and really culminated in the dragons birth... or a little before in the scene where she took Drogo outside to have sex in front of everyone.
I think it also made her come off as more mature and a real player.... unlike series Sansa that is seemingly pouting constantly.
to make it short, I agree with everything ;)
ReplyDeleteI still like the series Sansa, though she's truly not as much fascinating as the book one, that's true.
ReplyDeleteThat description of Joffrey is so dead on that I almost sputtered water all over my keyboard.
ReplyDeleteDaenerys' story was the element that got me to really get into the series (I have not read the books) firstly because the world she was stepping in to was nothing like the medieval societies of so so so many stories I've read and watched.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually part of what I like about the books.
ReplyDeleteWhat GoT seems to do is maintain the same balance, for the most part, in each episode. I think what I've been expecting is that I'd get an ep here and there that would have more of Daney and Jon's stories and less of the war story.
That makes sense!
ReplyDeleteThis book is definitely the story about the War of Five Kings nad the other stories suffer for it. Next season should be more Jon heavy thankfully. I love the beyond the wall stuff too. I'm not sure how Daenerys's arcs will play out.
It seems like they have changed Dany's story the most.... but not in any critical way so far.
IF she had teats to speak of" about Brienne, but that can come later easily enough..... I was waiting for it as he looked at her outside the pen though.
I just finished season 1. I'm a little behind :P
ReplyDeleteI need to catch up with season 2 ASAP! I love this show and am really mad Sean Bean died!! That little prick Geoffrey or whatever his name is ....!!!! I haven't seen season 2 yet, but hope he gets tortured!
I agree!
ReplyDeleteI love that even the lesser characters are of some importance and can play parts in the larger story, and I love that even the greater characters are mortal and can die at any time.
