Once Upon a Time: Our Biggest Unanswered Questions From Season 1

22 May 2012

Thanks to TV.COM for sending us this to post.

We missed Once Upon a Time so much on Sunday! We still have so many questions, not just about the season finale, but about the world of the show itself—do we really have to wait for Season 2 to get some answers? Before we say goodbye for the summer, let's cover the stated rules of the OUaT universe that we learned in Season 1 (and try to answer some of our own questions in the process). If we compare notes, we might end up with a pretty good picture of what's to come.

  1. That was pretty interesting! I'm sure we'll get some stuff answered next season.

  2. There were a lot of people not quite understanding that Emma was the only genuine magic in Storybrooke that wasn't just a remnant of the other world. Which is why she was able to break the curse in general, why true love's kiss only would work for her to break the sleeping curse, why Jefferson fixated on her, etc.

  3. My question is that since Americana wasn't picked up, does that mean we can see more Emilie De Ravin on OUaT? Is it possible for her to be a regular given the circumstances of where her character is based on the Finale.

  4. I wouldn't object to her being in more than an episode or two next season, but I don't think it would be smart to make her a series regular. They have so much left to explore with their original main characters and recurring characters like Ruby and Archie... No offense to Emilie, but I would rather see them work on some real character development for Snow/MM and David/Charming (they need it), Emma adjusting to the changes the finale brought about for her, more of Regina's backstory and her relationship with Henry, more on Red/Ruby, etc, etc, before they add any more regulars that take time away from all of the awesome regular/recurring characters they already have.

  5.  I think it's a given she'll be in at least a few episodes next season, and yes it is even possible for her to be a regular, which I'm hoping she will be.

  6. This article hits on a question I've been asking myself about this show for a while:  are a lot of these people really better off with magic back in Fairytale Land?  I don't think they are.  A lot of these people would be better off getting their memories back but staying in the modern world free from the confines of Storybrooke.

  7. I would love to have Emilie De Ravin be on as a series regular or at least have a recurring role because I did find her loveable as Belle and I'm curious how her presence would affect Mr. Gold.

  8. Ok. And what about Pinocchio? Has he died or what?

    ReplyDelete
  9.  I think a better term would be "dormant."  He's dormant until someone uses magic to get him back to his human form.

  10. This was funny and very interesting! Lots of good points made and questions asked! Can't wait for season 2! :D

  11. God, don't they teach logic in Tvland? It's "Magic can break any curse", not "every broken curse was from true love".

  12. I don't want Belle as a main character. Rumpel & Belle are annoying

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not as annoying as the over-exposed Snow and Charming aka MM and David.

  14. I think it's a huge assumption that Emma broke the curse. I think all the power she ever had was to make people remember their past. Graham didn't remember until he kissed her. If she had truly broken the curse, they'd all be back in Fairy Tale Land, not stuck in Storybrooke.

  15. A lot of those questions are not really a question and have been answered in the show already.

WE already know the answer for the first question as "both" - there's always a price, but not always a figuretive one you can just Pay.

For second that a clear parallel to Regina and  Rumple already implied that true love comes only once.

For third its OBVIOUS - there's no magic as force of nature in this world. You have objects of power from FTL, you have Emma, the product of true love, who was protected from curse, as the only person who CREATES magic in this world.

Emma's superpower is explained by her belief - Emma who could see Graham's wolf companion could use the superpower. The "in-denial" emma who is activelly trying to deny facts about magic and could not see August's leg could not, because her own magic, according to her wishes, denies its existence.

Fifth question is not a question but a statement and very obvious one. Yes we will see other worlds. Thats why they were introduced, duh.

as for magic - I see EVERYONE being better off without it. Its the source of misery no matter which land and the consequences of it almost always far outweight the good it can do. Its a wild force of nature that can swallow you whole and no one should tamper with it in FTL or storybrooke.

  16. Also Belle as main character? YES PLEASE.

Demote Archie and Henry to recurring.

Promote Belle and Red to regular.

  17.  MM and David were a bit annoying in the last epis, I agree. I didn't like what they did with their characters.
    Snow & Charming are perfect.
Rumpel and Belle...........Rumpel seems her father. And it hasn't the essence of Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. They ruined my fav story.

    ReplyDelete
  18.  And I find hilarious when someone says "I dislike Rumbelle" (yes, some people didn't love their story) you attack Snow&Charming.
I LOVE snowing, but I don't "hate" Rumbelle because I love another couple, just because I disliked them.
Of course, there are fan who don't love snowing, not everyone loves every character¡¡
But Ginnifer and Josh Dallas have many followers in twitter, Snow and Charming were worldwide TT, many fan-vids, tumblrs....
I like Belle, I like Rumpel........but not as couple.

  19. I feel the same way. New main characters are unnecessary at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree. I'm not a huge fan of either couple, but I don't understand what one user personally disliking R/B has to do with S/C. That was uncalled for.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Regina is one of my favorites too!

  22. The only REALLY annoying thing about Snow White and Prince Charming is their lovey-dovey sugary behavior around each other.

When separated, they are awesome and interesting characters. Once together, they become one-dimensional as hell.

Hopefully the snarky a bit violent Snow/Charming of "Snow Falls" will be back next season.

Rumple and Belle on other hand does NOT have that problem. Its in its core, the most perfect adaptation of Beauty and the Beast possible and thematically even the age difference fits.  In fact I'd say OUAT's version of it is million times superior to the original fairy tale, because both Belle and Rumple are just so much more layered, developed, interested and "gray" characters than the original Beauty and the Beast.

  23. If they don't make her a regular, she'll for sure be a frequently recurring guest star. I'm sure we'll see her much more than last season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No matter what site I'm at, you whine about them nonstop. Not everyone wants the show to only revolve around the Charming family.

Snow and Charming are main characters and get tons of screentime, nobody will take that away.

    ReplyDelete
  25. it's because "yop" hates on rumbelle all the time, on every website, and says how much better snowing are all the time. the second someone says the same as her, that they don't like snowing, she can't take it.

notice how she has to bring up twitter followers and such, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agreed. I don't hate Snowing, and think they should be together, but I'm not into the sweet cutesy couples. Those type of couples always bore me.

I LOVE Snow on her own, she's awesome. I find Prince Charming to be the most boring character on the show though. The only interesting things about him are his amazing wife and daughter.

I prefer my couples to have angst and lots of issues to work out. Love how different Rump and Belle are and how dark their relationship was in Skin Deep.

  27. Not dead. The producers said he's back for season 2. I'm sure he'll turn back into a "real boy". I really love August!

    ReplyDelete
  28. not to mention that the very first sentence of yop's comment about "hating on snow/charming" is very ironic, considering every time someone brought up the flaws in more mellow nature of the latter parts of snow/charming, yop would start to rant on how much more worse rump/belle is and that the show HAS TO focus on snow/charming because "it is about them"(and indeed, according to yop, everything else is but a filler.)

Remember the "MM sleeping with whale is totally fine, but David sleeping with anyone but MM will totally kill the show" argument, guys?

    ReplyDelete
  29. agreed with all this.

they'd all be safer without magic back. regina with powers again....DANGER. lol

  30. ha, i remember that.

  31. WHAT?  What other sites? O_o I just post here and in some article when I read it. I don't have tumblr or visit forums O_o

  32. you're oicaxf at fanforum. you say the same exact things at every site.

  33. Rumple did not need curse to find him. He needed it to get there and by unleashing magic, Its not even clear on what exactly he wants to achieve.

Also I think its quite obvious by now that they are setting up Baelfire to be a villain. OUAT's own Charles Widmore, so to say. Emma clearly indicated that Henry's father was NOT a good man.

  34. I'm with you when it comes to Snowing. They're drowning in sugary kitsch and even for a fairytale show it's too much. It's funny because I loved "Snow Falls" and was really in their camp for a while, but over time the show really made me like them less and less.

I didn't mind Mary Margaret and David that much. David was often dumber than a box of rocks, but the way they showed that love is not a picture-perfect fairytale in our world and that people are flawed worked for me. Snow and Charming are worse for me because whenever they are together they are so perfect, so brave, so pure and willing to sacrific themselves for love and what not. Basically perfect human beings.

When it comes down to it I probably still prefer them over Belle and Rumple though. Maybe the story will evolve in S2, but so far it's too clichéd for me taste. This "good girl saves bad boy with her true love" trophe is something I can't be bothered with anymore. I don't care much for woobified male characters in general and Rumple and Jefferson seem to be just that. At least when Jane Espenson writes them. Just doesn't interest me. But I don't watch the show for the love stories anyway, so it's not much of an issue yet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I do think that MM/David interaction will bring new dynamics to Snow/Charming now. Also now that FTL flashback no longer plays "i will find you" hide and seek, maybe the flashbacks will also focus less on moppey search each other stuff and more on them snarking at each other as they try to "take back the kingdom".

I do not see Belle and Rumple as "good girl saves bad boy with her true love". Thats the original beauty and the beast. In Rumple/Belle I do see a bad boy and I do see a good girl and I do see a true love. But there are none of those words in between.

What is refreshing in their relationship in Skin Deep is that Rumple does not just go "I must abandon my evil ways for love!" No. He comes to want both love and his evil ways. And Belle does not conform to standard "lets stick with true love trying to redeem him" route and instead basically goes "oh screw you you are a lost cause" and leaves him. And they both regret their decisions. Thus it feels less of about "lets change for love" and more of "lets search for a middle ground". In all senses Rumbelle feels NOT like a standard fairytale.

And their Storybrooke plot can go in so many different ways(for all we know Belle is half crazy from being locked in basement for years, for example).

  36. Regina herself stated if I remember correctly that for True Love's kiss to work the love must be mutual.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not really at all. Magic screwed a lot of them over even before the curse happened.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I do think they loved each other, but I don´t think that it was true love.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good point, he really does not need to return to fairy tale land. But I still believe (hope really) that they will find their way back somehow.

And I wouldn´t mind Bae being a villain. I think that in OUAT characters always seem to be either good or bad, but are more layered than that. Bae fights his father's evilness and might have to fight his own- that would be interesting to watch, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You're thinking of the original Beauty and the Beast. Rump isn't a good guy. In Skin Deep, he chose his powers over Belle. In the finale, judging by each of their faces, they're going to have the same problems. Rump got his powers back and had an evil look on his face at the end. There's no way he's going to suddenly be a good guy from now until the end of the series. No doubt Belle will get annoyed with him being power hungry and leave him for a while. There's no way they'll be a happy couple from now until the end of the series.

This is why I enjoy them. They're not like the other happy ~true loves~ on the show. I find it refreshing.

  41.  It's not even a question of magic for some of these people.  Some of these characters were living in squalor back in Fairytale Land.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought the same thing. Anybody Emma kissed would have woken up.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rumple needed Emma to break some part of the curse because Rumple needed to be able to leave Storybrook. He had a conversation to that point with Regina before she used the apple. Maybe once he got his magic back he could arrange it so he could leave, maybe they can all leave now...I don't know how they'll play that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pretty much. But this is a show that focuses on the royalty so having them not be waited on and having to work like ordinary people is a harsh punishment.

These don't really count as unanswered questions, I thought they were gonna be looking into far more detail. Anyway, the major thing I want to know is how Gold was able to procure Henry for Regina without knowing who he was? The writers said Rump remembered everything when he heard Emma's name at the inn. There's a huge plothole there. Does it have something to do with Gold being able to see the future? Which in that case, why would he even make it so the curse affected him when he could've seen that he wouldn't find Bae in our world?
