Fringe - Season 5 - Casting News - Seth Gabel not returning as Regular

22 May 2012

Seth Gabel will not be back as a series regular.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Fringe‘s leading lady, Anna Torv, noted that the odds of Gabel returning were slim.

“I don’t think [we'll see Lincoln again],” she lamented. “Unless we go to the other side, no” — a prospect made less likely by the season-ending closing of the bridge between the two worlds.

A Fringe insider, however, isn’t ruling out a guest appearance or two by Gabel during the final 13 episodes.

  1. Good. I have nothing against Seth, but the version of Lincoln he played this season has sucked balls (and not in a good way).

  2. Hmmm...ever since they hid Leonard Nimoy's reappearance so tightly, I've come to believe that we can't take everything the cast and crew say at face value. Fringe will spread false information just to leave the story unspoiled (which is kind of a good thing).

  3. Not surprising.  With only 13 episodes left and Lincoln being relegated to "over there" status, chances are that we wouldn't be seeing much of him anyway.

  4. I knew this after 4x20, though. I'm not surprised.

  5. Not surprised. I don't want to waste time on the Red verse in the final episodes. I never really got attached to the characters on that side anyway so no big loss for me.

  6. The bridge is closed. Only 13 episodes to go. A purge, a daughter, and a bunch of observers to deal with. It would have to be that Linc's goodbye to Peter was a goodbye to us as well. I hope we see Seth in some new show. I've gotten attached to him.

  7. I agree with this, but with only 13 episodes left to pound out the main storyline, I don't think they're going to bother with a now "irrelevant" redverse.

Unless the writers make it relevant somehow again :)

  8. If this is a sign that the Red Verse is not around next year I'm happy.
Nothing against the alternates, but the Red Verse would be nothing more than a distraction from more important elements in Season 5.That chapter closed this year, the lessons have been learned, the stories have been told and it is time to move on to the final chapter of FRINGE.

  9. Not surprising that he's not a regular but I hope we'll see him and the rest of the Redverse at least one more time.

  10. To me the Red Verse was never important on their own, they were only important as reflections of the Blue Verse regulars. The characters learned from them and we viewers saw aspects of our FRINGE team in a new light.

    - We saw Walternate learn lessons.
    - We saw Fauxlivia find her true love in OurLee.
The rest just don't matter in the grand scheme of the series in my eyes.
I think 4x20 was a perfect send off to Red and that chapter is done already. Going back now would be opening some new door that would just detract from the Season 5 arc.

  11. If it come up in the middle part of the season the Red Verse plays a part in the endgame.... I could maybe see a 3 part finale that had both universes working together to stop the Observers.

I just don;t know how that would play out seeing as the 2036 future we saw was Blue Verse exclusive.

  12. "I just don't know how that would play out seeing as the 2036 future we saw was Blue Verse exclusive."

Precisely. Although of course that 2036 future is ONE possible future...I think it depends on where the season starts, in 2012, 2036, or some other time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Like all things with Fringe I think that anything is possible and alternate timelines could easily transpire..... But then what was the point of them showing us that brilliant glimpse of 2036? IF that is not the current timeline and the eventual outcome our heroes are working to prevent I will be sorely disappointed!

Not only because the 2036 future was BY FAR the most compelling element of fringe in a year and a half, but also because it would be a waste of a Season 4 episode that could have been used to enhance the finale endgame last year.

The finale and the last couple episodes were lacking to me and moved too fast while trying to do too many things. One more episode could have really helped establish elements and slow down the pace for the endgame.

  14. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I for one was not ready to say goodbye to the Redverse at the end of last season. I felt like it happened way too quickly and that we weren't given any warning that 'that was it' with them. I think Seth was great in both characters of Lincoln and will miss him on the show just like the character of Charlie Francis. I feel like there are major emotional voids without them around.

  15. I hope he puts in an appearance or two. I'm not ready to say goodbye to the Red!Verse quite yet. Their Fringe team is as much a part of the show as the Blue!Verse team.

Also, I just really really want to see Charlie Francis again.

  16.  I think we might,it only says he will not back as a regular,it doesn't say he won't be back, and nothing about him not being a recurring,so its possible..

  17. Probably an unpopular opinion, but we started the story with our main trio and i'm looking forward ending it the same way.

No offense to the other side and Lincoln, but i think their story is over.

  18. not that upset since i liked lincoln from the other world much better then our lincoln

Altho it's predictable but I'm really sad on the way the handled Seth's characters this season. They killed Alt Lincoln (wtf?) and then forced Lincoln to 'find his home' in Alt Liv (wtf???) just to keep everybody happy (except for me) so meh. I haven't watched the finale coz I'm too angry lol.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I never saw him as one of the important main character's soo yeah. I do hope that we might get  see Alt-Livvie back though... I soo hope we will see her because she was my favo and I really liked her a lot!!!

  21. This is the first time the show has really disappointed me. I knew it was coming but I am really upset about it. Lincoln to me was a very interesting and loveable character and I loved the Red!Verse as a whole. At the very least I hope we get to see in the finale what happened to them all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I did really like Lincoln, but agree its not feasible.

  23. Wow. I know I'm in the minority in my love for Lincoln Lee, but I'm more upset at the idea of never seeing the redverse again. To me, Fringe is a show about alternate universes. I loved the original trio in the early days of the show a lot too, but for me, that just isn't what Fringe is anymore. There doesn't seem to be any groundwork laid at all to bring the alt-characters back though, unless it's in a very minor way, and that honestly disappoints me. I still have a lot of hope for season 5 but, especially during season 4, the episodes that featured alt-characters were better all around.

  24. Sad but this way we can more concentrate on the main cast.

  25. I am not surprised (I assume they've got a tighter budget this year) but I am disappointed. Still Linclon got a good send off and I am happy with how his (this-side) character ended up.

  27. I'm sad. I hope we at least get one red verse episode, but I don't think that will happen, unless the observers invade both universes and they have to fight together to be free.

  28.  ich hass es, das die autoren die Brücke schließen haben!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29.   I hate it, the authors have close to the bridge!!!!!!

  30.  So did I. Our Lincoln was alright but never really seemed to fit in. Perhaps in the red universe he would've but time's getting short. I'm sure a lot of things had to be changed and shifted around.I wish we had a couple of seasons left but I'm grateful for what we have.

  31.  I was wondering what you were going to post,i too fell in love with her character, also loving the photos!

  32.  If you read that again you will see it just says he won't be back as a regular. It doesn't say he wouldn't be back as a recurring guest star,or even a guest star. They only ruled out regular so i think we will see them again.

  33. I get that, and I don't want the Redverse to come back as an obligatory thing that gets in the way of the S5 arc either.  But I disagree as to Redverse's importance.  The show really first found it's footing when it opened up it's mythology with the Cortexiphan trials, Olivia's powers, and the possibilities of another universe.  And those characters may have started out as a reflection of our own characters, but I definitely love Fauxlivia and the late Captain Lee and especially Alt-Astrid, even Walternate, on their own merits now.  While I think we've gotten to a place where the show doesn't necessarily need the other universe or it's characters anymore, and I do agree that 4x20 was a pretty good sendoff, I think that the Fringe writers are not only capable of bringing them back without messing up their final arc, but I wouldn't be surprised if it benefited it; and I for one would be happy.

Not to say I won't love season five anyway, or that our trio, Astrid, Broyles and Nina aren't enough characters for me because they definitely are.  But I will be a little sadder at the end of the show if Redverse doesn't make one last appearance.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can see your point...

I'm a bit unique in how I looked at the Red verse though I think...
I always saw Fauxlivia as an aspect of Olivia. Likewise I saw Walternate as an aspect of Walter - not a separate individual. That's why I never understood why some people voted for Olivia/ Peter/ Fauxlivia as the best love triangle a year or two ago.To me that was only 2 people! XD

With some characters like Henry the cab driver or Lincoln it was obviously different since we first met them "Over There". In my opinion though none of the secondary characters matter very much in the bigger picture. The show is about the Bishops and Olivia to me and the rest of the characters are just vehicles to tell those 3 central figure's stories.

That is not to say I did not enjoy the alternates or secondary characters in general. I liked many of them a lot, but to me I watch Fringe (or any series) for the story and once a character has played their part in the story I just don't need them to come back no matter how much I loved them.

  35.  Maybe they will launch the Machine to get rid of the Observers (somehow, after whole battle). And the Machine is hidden somewhere - that's why Walter took William's hand. That would explain how did William know about "Statis Runes" - he cooperates with the Observers and he hid the Machine to help them. It will be interesting to see alternate universe after 25 years - much could change there. Walternate put in jail etc? :)

i agree with everything you've said here. i also love lincoln so i'm so sad to see him go. and i already miss the other universe after the bridge being closed for only a couple of episodes. they are what makes this show so awesome so i hope worlds apart wasn't the last we see of them.
    i miss lincoln already!!! :(

  39. The 2 universe story should have ended in the season 3 finale. Dragged on too long for me.

  40. I was warming to Lincoln.  I like him.  Not that I ever didn't like him, but I was struggling to see the point of him at first.  And now that he's gone, I'm still kind of srtuggling to see what the point of him would be if he did return.
