Our photog caught up with Rash -- who plays Dean Pelton on the show and won an Oscar earlier this year for co-writing "The Descendants" -- outside a theater in Hollywood last night. He told us that the cast "couldn't love him more" and the decision to not re-new Harmon's contract was totally out of their hands.

Well, I'm sure it didn't help matters all that much.
ReplyDeleteSuch a travesty -- Community without Dan Harmon is not 'Community' -- I'll, of course, continue to watch, but I'm dreading S4.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the truth will eventually come out. I don't think it was necessary Chevy related, maybe Dan had a run in with someone at Sony that seems more likely. Whatever happened it's a really blow to the fans and cast/crew. I'm still trying to process it all.
ReplyDeleteSince Harmon have spoken about quitting even before season 3 began. I was thinking it was more that he wanted to quit. But again, it does not look like that at this point.
ReplyDeleteHarmon also has a projects started, one for example at Adult Swim that was just picked up for development before the announcement (think it was called Ricky & Morty) and the other project was something over at Comedy Central (where he sorta has his roots).
I guess that's nice to hear, but I don't think all the bad press helped him too much.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine that such a public feud has made executives happy. I'm just hoping that Chevy is next. Pierce has never been an interesting character, and Chevy is not funny.
ReplyDeleteYeah reading his blog post it doesn't sound like he wanted to leave, maybe step back a little but not be fired. Hoping he will have luck with his new projects.
ReplyDeleteNo one, except some boss in Sony Pictures Television, knows why Dan Harmon is firing from his own show. Even Dan Harmon doesn't know! In his blog he made it clear that nobody ever called him...
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad.
Are you insane? Chevy is what made me watch this show in the first place (didnt know the other actors). He is funny and should stay on the show.
ReplyDeleteYou know I actually believe that 100%.... I think it's more likely that he and the studio execs had some issues that had nothing to do with what his relationships were like on the show and on set...
ReplyDeleteDan Harmon is kind of an ass so it really doesn't surprise me that the suits don't want him around.
ReplyDeleteHave to agree -- I love Pierce and Chevy's delivery and improv is quality.
ReplyDeleteHe may be hard to work with and a bit of a dick, but he's a great comedic actor and an hilarious character.
That hardly warrants them firing him from a show HE created and honed into a thing of beauty, and then not bothering to tell him he was fired...
ReplyDeleteIt has certainly influenced the decision to Sony about Dan Harmon, but I'm sure this is not the main reason. Anyway I think Sony has primarily chosen based on maximum profits they could do with a show like Community, a show with low ratings in a third season.
ReplyDeleteFor every opinion, there is another opinion. Alas, the only think that I find funny about Chevy and his character, Pierce, are when the other actors/characters make fun of him.
ReplyDeleteIf it has nothing to do with the Chevy feud, what the hell are the reasons why he was fired??
ReplyDeleteDan must have pissed off the wrong person, cause they didn't even contact Dan about season 4. They just went around him and hired other people, and he has to either stay in a lesser role or leave. And he will just leave because he's already got another show brewing!
I think Seth Green said it perfectly. Community without Dan is the same as Buffy without Joss. It just doesn't work. I figured it had nothing to do with the feud. I'll keep watching as well.
ReplyDeleteFrom what i read it was the Sony Corp that wanted him out,and the Head of NBC didn't stand in there way...
ReplyDeleteThe cast may say it didn't have anything to do with Chevy but they have to work with him. I'd say the public feud is not the only reason Sony has for firing him but it had to be the icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteI too find Pierce to be the least funny character on the show. More often he irks me than makes me laugh. Even before the feud I was hoping they would find a way to get rid of Pierce.
ReplyDeleteWell I don't think that we will ever know for sure why Harmon was fired. Only Sony and probably Harmon know that...
ReplyDeleteDan Harmon leaving and bringing in new guys rather than existing writers as showrunners is just the worst thing that could happen to the show. It is the death of Community. NBC guys are underestimating Dan Harmon's value in the creative direction of the show...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it didn't help. But then again, these are the people who canceled a brilliant show because they couldn't explain it in a 30 second spot. That's it, that's the reason. So they probably just want to make the show more 'accessible' and daw Dan as getting in the way of that.
ReplyDeleteOh, well, so killing Pierce wouldn't have helped after all...
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame anyway.
I also think that Pierce is the least interesting character and I really dont get what people see in Chevy. I think that Pierce's departure wouldn't hurt the show a bit.
ReplyDeleteDitto.
ReplyDeleteI'm dreading next season now. I can't imagine Community without Dan Harmon. They'll probably make it into something else :s and even though the actors are terrific I'm really afraid of what they'll be put through.
ReplyDeleteIf it's not the feud then what was the reason. This is not like replacing internal personnel at a company, this is an intellectual property that generates it's revenue when people watch it and as such the fans deserve to know what drive them to fire the person who has created the show. And until that reason is revealed specifically, everyone will assume that it was indeed because of the feud. If a situation came where they could either have Dan or Chevy but not both and if they chose Chevy Chase over Dan, then that is by far the stupidest decision they have made with the show.
