So this actually looks kinda cute. Not quite as b****y as Gossip Girl. Might as well give it a try when it comes on... as long as it doesnt conflict with any of my other shows.
This one is not for me, but the 90210 or Gossip Girl fans will may like it.
I may check it out occasionally since I LOVE the 80's music and culture and will get a kick out of that in short doses..... maybe.
Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way Adam Ant - Goody Two shoes Blondie - Dreaming David Bowie - Fashion Madonna - Like A virgin (Well at least 4 out of 5 songs are awesome XD)
It looks cuter than I expected but I still maintain that it won't have same appeal as SATC: sex and fashion. With that said, it is certainly possible that it might finds an audience anyway.
I don't know, it looks good but so did the pilot of Gossip Girl. Although I LOVE Freema Ageyman (Doctor Who, Torchwood) I'm not sure if I'll watch this one.
A good show that takes place in the past surrounds its character with it. No specific mention or preaching, just constant, unspoken reminders. MadMen does it well, PanAm actually did it well too, Life on Mars with the 70s too. Here we're not transported back to the 80s and this is due to a myriad details that are wrong: the 80s fashion is totally off, the hairstyles too. The music should be retro. Everything should tell us: these are teenagers and they're just like you.. except not, in this and this and that way. But still like you. Here, we've got "they're just like you", period. It looks like a slightly less glamorous Gossip Girl with a bit of Jane by Design thrown in. Not what I hoped for. Just think of everything we should see and feel and realize: Kids were so different even though they had the same yearnings and crushes. Rotary phones with landlines watched by parents, for example! Other fears, other freedoms, other taboos, other favorite 'toys". No "abstinence only" sex ed, and no real awareness of AIDS. High teenage pregnancy though. No sexting. In fact "like a virgin" was a major scandal. I'm not even talking about sexual orientation awareness for teens or gay/straight alliances. I think people used to smoke in schools, teachers definitively in the teacher's lounge, I don't think the students still could but at a time even the students could. People thought cocaine wasnt dangerous. NYC was so different then, too: The city in 84 was just out of its near-bankrupt days and was dirty, gritty, sometimes violent, and often wild. Whole neighborhoods were beginning to resurrect. In short, NYC in 1984 isn't NYC today and we must feel it. We need a shot of the Twin Towers except no one notices them and probably someone disses them. 1984 was an electoral year (I don't remember what Democrat was running but in Manhattan the disputes would have been fierce, especially among the educated/wealthy.) It was before the "Big Bang" in financial dereguation (1985) so Wall Street was about to change, with financial markets about to take over Manhattan. There are so many things they could choose to position around their characters to place us in their timeframe and mindframe; but this trailer makes it look like it's nowadays, perhaps the early 21st century but basically nowadays, and that bugs. It takes me out of the story to be told we're in 1984 and almost NOTHING rings true on that account. Overall, the concept's excellent but the realization is seriously lacking. There's still time for them to add visuals and stuff though.
My only problem with this is that this is taking place in NYC during the 80's. This show will be based in Manhattan but how will the producers include the iconic twin towers?
I mean I live in NY and those buildings were the heart of Manhattan
I'm not trying to make a big deal but this trailer focuses so much on the Empire State as if the Twin Towers never existed.
Other than that, this looks like your average typical teen drama. 9O21O and Gossip Girl fans will have something to fill the void when those shows depart.
Gossip Girl is sooooo much better than this, 1980 really....so not watching this. Blair Waldorf and Sereny vdWoodsen are the one and only, this is no style, no original. Its a GG copy, true fans would never watch something like this. 1980, just forget it
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I like AnnaSophia Robb but cannot stand Austin Butler. The show itself looks pretty but I'm not entirely sold on it...at least not yet.
ReplyDeleteLooks alot like a gossip girl :|

definitely not my cup of tea.. I hated Sex and the City, so its prequel (of sorts) isn't really appealing. But I admit, it does look well-done.

Kay looks a little better than I was expecting, but I think I've really outgrown these types of shows.
ReplyDeletelol please
ReplyDeleteI liked Sex & The City, but I have no interest in watching a prequel to it. Really, I just think it's pointless.

ReplyDeleteI like the actress from the movie(s) I've seen her in, but this is definitely not a show for me, but very "typical CW-ish"
ReplyDeleteGOSSIP GIRL 2.0 : that's what it is !!!!!!
