For your second show, I'd have to vote Heroes (though to be fair, I haven't seen The Walking Dead). I remember thinking that 24 seemed like a cool concept, and the ticking clock was one best ideas ever, but it didn't really snag me until a few episodes into the season. Heroes, on the other hand, had me hooked from the start. I thought they did a great job of introducing all the different stories, and it was such an interesting premise.
ReplyDeleteLost definitely, because is one of most intrigue pilot ever made for tv and 24 because redefine the concept of tv action dramas.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to listening to this tomorrow. I'll also have to think about my top two pilots.
ReplyDeleteObviously Lost is the best, but what would I choose for a second? Hmmm.
The Lost pilot was amazing and nothing else approaches it.
ReplyDeleteALIAS for sure.
ReplyDeleteAlso, American Horror Story and Sherlock.
Lost is #1 and there's no question in my mind about it. The next one is incredibly difficult. I can't even get close to deciding between Breaking Bad, Fringe, Game of Thrones or Dexter. Dexter's premiere is vastly underrated.
ReplyDeleteHaving throught about it, I'd say Heroes or Desp Hwives. Both really drew me in.
ReplyDeleteI would vote Heroes and Smallville.
ReplyDeletelost,supernatural & vampire diaries
ReplyDeleteLost is the best pilot I have ever seen. Loved every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood is my second choice. It just seemed so different to everything else I was watching at the time. After watching the pilot I bought all the books online within the hour.
I know it is old, but I also really love Twin Peaks pilot. Tv has changed since, so there are better pilots out there, but at the time it came out, it was the best pilot I had ever seen. (and it is still pretty high up on my list).
Awake and Lost.
ReplyDeleteFlashForward had both a medicore pilot and show.
Lost & Alias had really good pilot episodes
ReplyDeleteFringe and Game of Thrones ... no doubt about it!
ReplyDelete♥
Lost pilot is still my favourite, also love Sherlock it made me fall in love with the characters so quickly and I loved the direction and cinematography
ReplyDeleteLOST and Doctor Who (new series episode "Rose").
ReplyDeleteI'd say Heroes and Dexter
ReplyDeleteLost.
ReplyDeleteHomeland and The Walking Dead
ReplyDeletesupernatural and smallville
ReplyDeleteHere comes the curveball! I don't normally listen to these podcasts, because I think I like different kind of shows than you guys, but I was intrigued by the topic of Two best pilots. My take on it's that you have two kind of pilots:
ReplyDelete1) beginning of the circle, it will be probably not the best episode and creators take the time to establish really well the characters and plot, it comes full cricle with the series finale. Often with the first viewing you think it's OK, but I think pilot should be judged after the entire series and great pilots withstand the test of time.
2) I do have name for those, but I won't share it (I don't like them ;)) because it's rude. Creators concentrate on action and forget about characters, mostly pure action.
Comedy pilots are easy to judge, the best one are the ones that are the funniest. I don't like The Big Bang Theory that much, but pilot isn't good and most people I know who're the fans agree with that. Fringe doesn't have really a good pilot. AHS also sucks. The other ones're good, I haven't seen 2 or 3.
Pilots which should be included: Arrested Development, The Shield, Rescue Me, most of the HBO shows, The West Wing etc.
My problem is that I don't think you had particularly strong choices. Keep the good work guys!
...Still Fringe has to me one of the best opening scenes... and I liked awake opening as well!

I'm sorry, but haven't you guys seen Battlestar Galactica? "33" is by far the best first episode ever.
ReplyDeletefringe's pilot was epic! so was LOST's and heroes. all amazing episodes. i love going back after watch ing a few seasons of a show and watching the pilot to see how different things were at the start. doing that right now with fringe
