Metered Market Tuesday Ratings
CBS Wins; Raising Hope and Ringer Conclude Seasons on a Quiet Note

Tuesday 4/17/12
Metered Market Results

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 7.9/13
ABC 6.5/11
NBC 4.6/ 7
Fox 4.1/ 7
CW 0.8/ 1

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 4/19/11
CBS: +13, NBC: + 2, ABC: -16, Fox: -18, CW: -27

———-

-Winners:
NCIS (CBS), Dancing With the Stars (ABC), NCIS: Los Angeles R (CBS), The Voice (NBC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Cougar Town (ABC), Raising Hope (Fox), Ringer (CW), Fashion Star (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the overnights on this third Tuesday in April with its combination of NCIS (11.2 rating/18 share at 8 p.m.), which took top-rated honors for the evening, and encore telecasts of NCIS: Los Angeles (#2: 7.0/11) and on-the-fence Unforgettable (#1: 5.5/ 9) from 9-11 p.m. Had Unforgettable aired on another network, its chances of returning for a second season would have been much greater. Unfortunately, the expectations are higher on the Eye net and Unforgettable just did not break out.

In time period premiere news, ABC’s Private Practice moved into the 10 p.m., hour with an uneventful second-place 5.2/ 9 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 35 percent below year-ago occupant Body of Proof (8.0/14 on 4/19/11), with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of the live Dancing With the Stars Results Show (11.0/17) of only 47 percent. What Private Practice will win the time period in adults 18-49, what was a respectable fit for Private Practice out of parent Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday could be problematic out of Dancing With the Stars on Tuesday.

Earlier in the evening on ABC were comedies Last Man Standing (#3: 4.7/ 8), which is certain to return next season, and questionable Cougar Town (#4: 3.5/ 6) from 8-9 p.m., followed by aforementioned Dancing With the Stars at a dominant 10.4/16 at 9 p.m.

In season-finale news, Raising Hope did not early its renewal stripes with a fourth-place 2.9/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, that dipped by 27 percent from freshman New Girl at 9 p.m. (#4: 4.0/ 6), which is not the breakout hit it was earlier in the season. At 8 p.m., tired Glee finished second with a 4.9/ 8, which dropped by a significant 31 percent from one year earlier (7.1/11 on 4/19/11). Fox would be wise to reconfigure its Tuesday line-up next season.

Ringer on The CW concluded for the season (and probably series) with a bland (and very last place) 1.1/ 2 at 9 p.m. Needless to say, there is no reason to expect the Sarah Michelle Gellar drama back. Its lead-in, an encore telecast of 90210, scored a mere 0.5/ 1 in the overnights at 8 p.m.

Over at NBC, The Voice Results Show was the standout with a third-place 6.0/10 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that built from the second hour of year-ago occupant The Biggest Loser (4.5/ 7 on 4/11/11) by 33 percent, with growth out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Biggest Loser (4.5/ 7) also of 33 percent. And it continues to trend upward on Wednesday (three-week overnight rating track: 5.7 – 5.8 – 6.0). Overall, The Biggest Loser averaged a 4.5/ 7 from 8-9 p.m.

At 10 p.m. on NBC, recent entry Fashion Star remained a ratings no-no with a third-place 3.2/ 6 at 10 p.m. That said, not every reality competition works.

  1. Private Practice seems to have a built-in fanbase. NOTHING retains Dancing's audience and it's funny watching people try to judge a show every year by how well it does after DWTS. lol Retention is proving to be less and less of a factor.

Anyway, I say they should move PP back to Thursday for a shortened final season in the Fall.

  2. Cougar Town :(
I don't understand why more people don't watch New Girl - it's one of my favourite shows now and is hilarious!
Private Practice was so good last night - I really hope it gets renewed and it was stupid separating it from Grey's.

  3. Though the poster says there is "no reason" to expect Ringer back, I'm clinging to my hope. The show really hit its stride in the back end of the season, which may have been too little too late, but I'm hoping the network will give it a second chance. I'm just sorry more viewers didn't stick with it - it got really good!

  5. I dont understand why people dont watch the Ringer! It is such a good show! I will be sad if it is cancelled. But it was good while it lasted. : (  I really hope it gets renewed!

  6. Television is so depressing nowadays. And I don't mean because they're dramatic and deep like Breaking Bad... I mean depressing because it seems like the ratings are collapsing everywhere. I wonder what Nielsen will do with this? I can't see this business model being very lucrative in another 5 years.

    Especially for NBC/CW

  7. If Ringer dies, Nikita may yet live. I'm cool with that.

  8. It's funny too because if you went by social media and online media you would think The CW & NBC had high ratings.

  9. Totally agree about New Girl. The show was nothing special in the beginning but now it's the show i most look forward to every week. It never fails to make me laugh out loud!
It really improved a lot and people should definitely give it another try.

  10. It means nothing of the sort, Ringer being cancelled will not affact Nikitas fate since Ringer currently had the lowest ratings on the netwrok. Its the shows slightly above Nikita that you need to be watchful and the number of pilots picked up to series at upfronts.

My guess is Nikita and Ringer will definately get the chop, HOD most likely joing them.

  11. Goodbye Ringer.

  12. People talk about them because they're pathetic and it's interesting to talk about them.

After all, 1 of the CW's motto is 'Tv to talk about' and not 'Tv to watch'.

  13. Wilson, don't get depressed! Aren't you close to graduation? Watch happy shows and stay away from Six Feet Under. And the ratings, no sense in worrying because I don't think there's much we can do about them except to buy lots of whatever is being advertised. I don't remember where I read it, but somewhere was the suggestion to contact advertisers and thank them for advertising during our favorite show. Could work.

  14. Please dont say that, I can deal with loosing one of them (I'd have to choose ringer =/) but loosing both would just be devastating.

  15. Yes! The 2nd half of the season has been much better than most of the first half!

  16. That would be Cortexifan saying that. We were discussing that one day about Fringe, i think it was around the time when we were trying to figure out a way to save the show.Cortexifan said to save the receipts and when writing to the advertisers show them that you appreciate them supporting Fringe and that we were supporting the advertisers.

  17. I have another year until I get my degree... :|

  18. That's very ironic since I fastforward through commercials faster in that show than any other show I watch. O_O

  19. Wilson, you might like to check out VideoMind.com its about social media and such.I found it interesting, and it appears more and more people are aware of this, even Nielsen. With Nielsen they are now advertising to people online, they want one to download there program so they can follow you everywhere you go,everything you watch...

  20. be prepared to lose both its a very real possibility given how awful their ratings are

But if one does by some miracle survive you'll have a nice surprise come May upfronts.

  21. Ha!  I know right! I think the only person i know is Cortexifan.  :P

  22. That must be why Ford uses product placement during Fringe. As Peter heads off to examine another gooey body, the camera focuses in on the Ford Focus logo on the back of the car. Then Peter uses all the gizmos inside the car. "Dear Ford, I couldn't help but notice your ad during Fringe. I will buy a Ford Focus when I am next in the market for a car....."

  23. That's bad for PP. I knew changing time slots would be bad idea. It should have stayed on Thursdays. As far as Cougar Town goes I'm not surprised, but still I love this show.

There's no chance Ringer comes back with this ratings. I'm disappionted with New Girls ratings it deserves better, I really loved this weeks episode.

  24. Its Cougar Town ratings that depress I look forward to this show every week, this season has been so good, I want to spend time with these characters and that world :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Glee's ratings are so down, that if the down ward spiral continues, Smash may get higher ratings. But then again you can't compare

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is another place but at the moment i can't seem to find it,but i will get back to you....If your interested in what Nielsen is about just goggle it,they have a contact number, and a place to email them.I couldn't believe how fast they got back to me!  :)

  27. They have been using product placement for awhile now,i remember when Eureka started they always had Degree deodorant in the bathroom, then 2 yrs later they started with cars,so its becoming more common place considering they are running out of options..

  28. New Girl :((

It's better than Glee, people should watch it!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ringer need a new day. Ringer vs. NCIS:LA & The Voice, of course not watching the Ringer. Have a new day, when the series being stronger, or a strong show before the Ringer... like Vampire Diaries. I think... :)
