  1. I liked this episode and it advanced many of the plots along nicely. I'm not sure it was a great episode though.

~ "Together we can end this war in a fortnight....arrgh!"- Great seeing Brienne take down her attackers. So awesome to think that Christie is a model and not afighter just being brutal on hte series! - The Shadowborn was simply awesome again! He even looks a little bit like his father! XD~ "No, I want to be THE Queen."- I thought we may see Ser Loras go crazier than he did, but the scene was still quite effective. Margery (Dormer) continues to impress me. Although even though I understand that Highgarden is the very seat of chilvalry and fashion.... do they really need to put her in those attrocious dresses?~ "Marcella is a sweet, inncoent girl and I don't blame her at all for you."- The face to face battles between Cersei and Tyrion have not disappointed. One of these days Cersei should really listen to Tyrion and not to beat him.... The chemistry between Dinklage and Headey is great... although I do miss seeing him play off Jaime if I am honest.~ "Alright. Enough! Even torturing you is boring."- I love how Tyrion deals with the lesser Lannisters like Joff and Lancel. ~ "Will you bring Lady Melisandre with you?"-  I think this week Dillane truly won me over completely as Stannis Baratheon! Great scene with Davos and him! Did I hear Blackwater?~ "Being repeatedly humiliated by Robb Stark is time-consuming."- His buddy movie with Bronn continues to entertain me. They are so perfect together!~ "And seeing as you're my cousin I may actually let you wake from that sleep."- Charles Dance was great as Tywin again and his scene with Arya was awesome. Nice to see a bit of her once again using her brains to survive...~ "Speak three names and the man will do the rest."- Jaqen! Loving the casting although we do not see enough of him in either the books or the seires so far. Arya named the Tickler? Hmmm..... not sure how I feel about that.Nice to see Jon again, but I'm tired of Edd and Sam's comedy on the road tour honestly.....At least we got to meet Qhorin Halfhand in Jon's second scene. Powwerful stuff and well cast. However it was very welcomed indeed to have a Dany scene that actually went somewhere and did something! The dragons look great and are growing slowly.....They made quite a few changed ot Xaro, but I liked them and I think the character is more compelling on the screen than in th books...

Some brilliant moments and Dinklage continues to shine. It seems like every scene he does has multiple memorable lines! I was glad to see Bran, Jon and Dany again and I'm very glad their arcs are moving forward now.... I liked most of the episode, loved some of it, but I did not love it on the whole. I guess episodes like this are needed to advance the story once in a while....

  2. HBO's promotional stills from the night.

  3. This episode did a TON to advance the plots of most of the stories but overall it wasnt as entertaining or intriguing as last weeks or other episodes so far this season.

    ReplyDelete
  4. it of course also lacked any nudity, sex, or incest of any kind

  5. I loved the advancement of the various story arcs, but felt the same way....
It's a bit odd too since there were some absolutely brilliant moments and nothing stood out as bad like in some past episodes. No Sexposition or scenes that happened to have Ros in them but were not about her....

The episode even had a bit of a uniting theme... Fire.
    - Qhorin Halfhand noted the fire of the Wildlings as the Night's Watch made camp at The Fist of the First Men.
    - Dany taught Drogon to cook his own food with his fire.
    - Tyrion discovered the Wildfire of the Pyromancers.
    - If I stretched it even more.... maybe the shadow that killed Renly was only seen because of the torches burning? XD

    ReplyDelete
  6. I voted great. If it weren't for the shadow assassin scene I would have been disappointed. I can't get enough of the mythology and mystery of this show.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Renly's death was o e of my 3 favorite scenes this episode, but I do wonder how it would have played at the end of the previous episode. I think the Shadowbaby birth was AWESOME and the death was great, but I wonder if they were both in one longer scene if it might have been better....

Maybe this was the best way to do it in the end....

  8. Ack!
I was looking at Pyat Pree's face and thinking how frightening (and familiar) it was and how he would make a good zombie... Then I looked up Ian Hanmore's bio on IMDB and I realized he already was a zombie-like creature in "The Fades" on BBC!

  9. The episode bordered on OK for but I got my dose of Jon Snow and Dany, so that upped it to Great for me. Oh, Theon! I hate that the season is only 10 episodes (maybe we can petition for at least 12? I mean the books are so long winded (in a good way) and rich and full of detail and we fans did wait like six years for another book, if that doesn't deserve a reward in and of itself I don't know what does, LOL and *sigh*) It is going by so fast before you know we will be going the withdrawal all over again, desperate for a glimpse of just the cover of the Blu Ray.

  10. I'm going to agree with most of the other comments. It was a great episode that moved the plot along nicely, I can't find anything to complain about, yet it still wouldn't be considered one of my favourite episodes of the series.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They had to make the change, I guess, since they didn't put her with Weese.  It's one of the less offensive changes I can think of.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I completely forgot about Theon.  It could be because [Yara] takes his scenes, but I guess soon we'll see two storylines merge so it should mean more screen time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Glancing through the rest of the comments, I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said. I thought that it was fantastic in terms of plot advancement, though it wasn't as gripping as some of the previous episodes have been. Still, it was a great hour of TV.

  14. For me it was considerable stronger than last weeks.
Was also impressed how badass Brienne fought. And her shriek was freezing my blood.
Also finally felt Stannis coming to his own in this episode and not being a puppet which strings pulled by Melisandre.
For me, Edd's lines were some of the highlights of this episode. Had to smile or giggle at every one of them. And Iceland, boy! Really the perfect location to shoot these scenes. How the clouds looked was very unique.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would also liked to see Renly's death at the end of last weeks episode. Plus then I could have won some GoT gear from a Podcast competition since I guessed his death in episode 4. Very disappointed in D&D.

  16. It's amusing to me how varied opinions are with Game of Thrones. There is so much to like and so many different characters for people to latch onto that almost every episode will be 30-50% favorite episode and a like amount will find it their least favorite! XD
Of course having so much makes it easy for some to find things they dislike too! XDMost shows just are not like that since they have limited story elements and limited cast numbers.Iceland is AMAZING! I know some people have commented about it feels wrong to them to have the North so barren when the book version is heavy forest, but honestly I never notice the lack of tress since the scenery is so breathtaking! I do get their point. Forests have a spooky element to them and danger can be around any tree.... That said, I am simply loving Iceland as the North!Edd is nowhere near to me what Ros is to some, but I have yet to enjoy any scene he has been in. In the books I did not find him as annoying, but with the limited time spent on Jon's arc so far Edd's jokes seem to be amplified in my mind I guess. I just never connected with him like many (most?) did. Oh well, I'm glad he made it to the series for the majority that adore his dolorousness.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Damn!
    Missed it by that much!
I thought he was going to be killed in episode 4 too, so I would have lost.

At least we have the majority of the season's action to look forward to at this point! I cannot believe the season is halfway over! :(

  18. I'm another one that loves how Tena plays Osha.
I much prefer the series version to the books and I will be overjoyed if she takes the place of the Reeds next year. I never liked the Reeds overly much in the books I guess. I found Bran's story to be probably the most boring of the Stark kids (aside from Rickon ) in the books. The only aspect of them I found intriguing is that their father Howland Reed was the only witness to the events in the Tower of Joy now that Ned is dead. And honestly that fact is only intriguing if there is more to Jon's parentage than Ned admitted.... as many readers suspect.

About Osha though, wasn't she "mouthy" in the books too? Frankly I never paid attention to her character much, but I recall many lines similar to those in the series.

  19. Agreed. I don't think losing the Tickler this early is a big deal, but I will miss the scene in the books where he died. I guess the can substitute a different character for Arya to kill, but I assume that scene will be cut entirely now....

  20. This was a solid, plot advancing episode.

Strangely enough, amidst a season crammed with demon seeded shadow killers, incestuous gropings, mass child slayings, and whore beatings, Game of Thrones managed an episode this week where its highlights were actually its most touching moments.

The private conversation between Daenerys and Ser Jorah about how to proceed to Westeros and the pledge scene between Catelyn and Brienne were both very moving scenes and were tops in an otherwise solid episode.

     - Again, the "snappy dialogue" highlights come from King's Landing this week and involve almost every Tyrion scene.  Whether it's with Cersei, Bronn, or anyone else, the best conversations always seem to start with Tyrion.
     - Anyone else find it ironically hilarious that old man Lannister continually bemoans the failures of those around him while, at the same time, he unknowingly houses Arya?  Maybe all of Tyrions digs at his dad aren't that far off after all.
     - You want to be "The Queen," Margery?  Heh.  Best of luck to you.
     - Arya seems to have really good luck finding people to kill for her.
     - The "beyond the wall" scenes are gorgeous.  If I was part of the crew on that set, I'd request to be put in costume.  It's probably the best way to keep warm.  Besides, who wouldn't want to wear a big furry cape?
     - It frustrates me to know end that someone (anyone!) doesn't kill Littlefinger.  It requires a huge suspension of disbelief to accept that someone hasn't shoved a blade through that guy already just to shut him up.
     - Bran just sent people off to battle?  Well, if his childhood wasn't completely ruined it sure as hell is now.  Speaking of Bran...  Hey Osha, how's about giving the kid a straight f*cking answer when the kid asks you a question?

Honorable mention to seƱor creepy clones, Pyat Pree.  I want to hang out in the House of the Undying and see what that guy does all day.

  21. Meera and Jojen were Bran's PoV for me until Bloodraven, to be honest.  That being said, Howland Reed was what everyone wanted to see... and well, Jojen retelling the Knight of the Smiling Tree seems to indicate that Lyanna Stark was the one that defended Howland against the jackasses.

As for Jon's parentage, I honestly think GRRM wanted it to be his "I am your father" moment but so many fans jumped on it, it was spoiled so he just keeps putting it off.

Osha was a bit character.  She was mouthy in a sense, but she was normally kept to a shortened scene.  I think the issue is that every female character has developed that penchant in the show and it takes away from her identity. Jeyne, Margaery, Arya, Ros, Shae... the list goes on and on.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very true about this episode's highlights being the touching or small and quiet moments compared to action scenes!

As I read the books I cannot count the times I wondered why someone had not just killed Littlefinger already. Even suspending the knowledge I had of him that many dealing with him would not have had.... I still think someone would have killed smarmy ass by now.

I feel that even more in the series since Littlefinger is so much more overt and blatant than the books.

  23.  "I understand that Highgarden is the very seat of chilvalry and
fashion.... do they really need to put her in those attrocious dresses?"

I like them.  They're unique and I appreciate how they go to great lengths to differentiate her wardrobe from other noblewomen on the show.  I wouldn't call the attire pretty but the wardrobe is creative and very interesting to look at.

"I'm tired of Edd and Sam's comedy on the road tour honestly"

I completely agree.  I think choosing to insert all that comic relief into those scenes does the entire storyline a great disservice.  It's a mistake to undercut the drama to that extent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "I feel that even more in the series since Littlefinger is so much more overt and blatant than the books."

That's exactly it with the onscreen Littlefinger.  All these people know who he is, what he does, and how he operates.  They also know the eventual negative cost of dealing with this guy.  Why someone doesn't shove a dagger through his mouth the moment he opens it is beyond me.

  25. Agreed on Lyanna and GRRM'ss " I am your father" moment.
I do wonder how much the fan theories that make it to GRRM's ears have influenced him. I am and L+R=J believer to a large degree, but I can see other possibilities too easily enough.

I guess part of GRRM storytelling mastery is that 5 books in so many of the future plot outcomes can still be interpreted in so many different ways. It can be frustrating, but I appreciate the fact that the secret things are still secret to this point in the saga.

I completely agree that most of the women in the series have a snarky attitude that I did not get in the books. I think it's just part of pop culture right now to have snarky women who don't take anything from men. It does annoy me somewhat since this series is not set in our modern time and our pop culture should have little to do with the series as far as I'm concerned.

In Westeros and especially the smallfolk of Westeros the women behaved when around the men in power or they would face probable repercussions. I would like a more demure female player on the show to add some variety.

I think it is entirely possible to be a strong woman and still not be snarky when others "disrespect" you. There are different ways to survive and different ways to play the game and all the women do seem a bit one note aside from Brienne and  maybe Catelyn Stark.

It's like they see having manners and a sense of propriety as weakness and want to show that their female characters are not weak. Personally for me a lack of manners is weakness in itself - especially in the highborn ladies.

That is why I have not liked how they portray Sansa very much. To me she comes off as a pouting child. Yes her life as she knew it is over and she is in a terrible place, but I  always took her as being more civil. In the series she is not well-mannered at all and does not even try to fake it. I just imagined her entirely different than that. I saw Sansa as actually faking politeness and manners in a very believable way and not acting like a child. Her manners were her shield and she needed to be believable or face possible death or worse....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh I kind of like her dresses too honestly, but they are VERY different from the rest of the women and stand out a bit too much to me. I guess if I had to choose between overdoing it and not making her fashion sense any different than the rest of the women on the series, I chose overdoing it.

  27. I was shocked it was the Tickler, I thought the scene where she kills him was pretty important to her character development, not to mention it could be totally epic to see (however a bit disturbing too, considering Arya's age). But then again, the scene is essential to the fate of a certain companion of Arya, who gets so seriously wounded he practically dies, right? So it has to be there, she'll just have to kill someone else. Plus I really hope to see the "remember where the heart is?" bit. So yeah, I don't think the scene will be cut.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Honestly, I love all episodes of GoT, of both seasons. The show is just TV at its best.

But of course it has better and weaker moments. Here are my thoughts on this week's episode:
    - loved Bran as the prince/lord of Winterfell (again). I love to see him in charge. I was also glad we got a tiny little glimpse at how wild Rickon is becoming.  I still haven't got over the fact there are no Reeds, though. I mean, I think they're dealing with it rather smoothly, but something just didn't feel right when Bran took over Jojen's sea dream this week. Also I won't accept Osha as the one who'll help him through his prophetic dreams and skinchanging abilities. I need Jojen Reed, for heaven's sake. Much more than, say Ros the Whore. Jojen (and Meera) KNOWS THINGS. There really aren't many people in this universe that do.

    - Jaqen H'hgar, how I love the guy. Great casting and the actor is pretty damn hot too ;) I liked all Arya scenes, I think for the first time it was visible how much Maisie has grown since last season. I was shocked the name she said was the Tickler, but I discussed it already elsewhere.

    - the Jon scenes weren't as great as so far for me, but I'm glad Qhorin Halfhand has arrived. The things to follow are going to be great, I am sure.

    - I so very much sincerely hate the Iron Men, Theon included. However, I did hate them in the books as well, so I guess it means the show is doing them justice. I am very excited for the day they reach Winterfell, actually. Awesomely terrible things will come ;)

    - Tyrion is always great, but this week I think a little less than ususally. Cannot wait for next week, though. I hope he beats the hell out of Joffrey.

    - I might be in minority, but I think Renly's death scene was very unimpressive. catelyn and Brienne didn't even look that surprised when the shadow arrived. I mean, the scene might have been shocking for people who haven't read the books, but for me it looked really small. I knew it was gonna happen but I still thought it would impress me to see how it happens. Well, it didn't. Plus, I don't know, I kinda hated Brienne's (well, the actress's) acting.

So all in all, I think it was one of the weaker episodes this season, but it was still great, cause it's GoT;) I liked  how there was so much about mystery and magic. The dragons, Pyat Pree, the Winterfell-sea-dream, the wildfire, all the talk about White Walkers etc.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Some thoughts:

That first scene with Renly was nervewrecking, knowing what was going to happen. I kind of hoped we'd see Loras go ballistic, since I always thought that was one of the more powerful things in the books, his reaction to Renly's death. Margaery's dress is just plain awful.

Tyrion and Cersei's banter took it to a whole new level this episode, I loved it! Lots of little funny moments and just a whole lot of resentment there too. I also liked the small comic relief with Sam at the Fist of First Men. Read it in a book :D.

    Loved Pyat Pree!

Bran really shone in his scene with ser Rodrik's message! But as I watch this storyline unfold I just get a queezy feeling in my stomach...

    Overall really loved the episode!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think I'm one of the few that loved Bran's story in the books, I'm really looking forward to  how they handle the absence of the Reeds next year!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do not want that scene cut either.... I just don;t understand why they would have Arya name the Tickler if they were going to have that scene later. Why not name Polliver or introduce a character that is terrible to her or Gendry early in the episode and have her name them?

I just can't grasp the logic of killing Tickler now and then seasons later when he died in the books substituting some other character. It's nonsensical. I think they can easily do it, but I don't see why they would want to do it I guess.

It was the first change from the books I really had to tilt my head and think about and ended up not getting.....

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm hoping Loras will go ballistic in the next episode...
I'm not sure why they would remove that scene after playing up his relationship with Renly so much. I was confused by the fact they downplayed Loras' reaction to Renly's death....

    ReplyDelete
  33. Assuming the Reeds do not make it next year I will be looking forward to it also!

I really do like seeing the changes made about 95% of the time and I expect Bran's story to be one of the most tweaked in the coming seasons....

  34. Smarmy? I just smirked a little.  I love your snappy and apropos dialogue, Darque.

  35. Another solid episode. Didn´t enjoy it as much as last week, but it was still the best thing going on TV.

Jaqen was brilliant. Loved him in the books and he is doing a great job in the series aswell.

Never was a big fan of Dany in the books and I didn´t pay enough attention to her story. I loooved Pyat Pree this week. Cannot wait to see more of him. Always enjoy Mormont aswell.

Jon was just ok this week, but I know it needs to move slowly north of the wall, for the story to fall in place. Good things will come! And I think those scenes are so beautifully filmed. It really gives a good impression of what it is like north of the wall.

I´m not sure what to think of Brans story without the Reeds. Osha is great, I really like her, but she cannot take the part of both of the Reeds.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm a huge Brienne fan so this episode satisfied my need for some Tarth action. Hoping we get the Jaime scenes soon he has been missing in action for far too long.

Oh Renly Renly I knew it was coming it still saddened me though, the only King I would follow simply for having great style and THAT crown.

LOVED the Arya and Jaqen scenes, damn Jaqen is hotter than I imagined, like seeing him properly in this episode, oh wow.

Also first Dany scenes this season I've really enjoyed

    Overall a great episode.

  37. It makes more sense to keep Polliver over the Tickler for the scene at the end of SoS, as he is the one with Needle. Also, bear in mind that a couple of seasons will have to go by before this scene happens and the Tickler doesnt not appear in the intervening time so people will forget about him. At least with Polliver he is a lieutenant to Ser Gregor and the castellen of Harrenhal which would give them an excuse for him to be around and to keep the character in people's minds. Regardless, wouldn't be surprised if he is the next to die anyway.
