I loved the first Ary and Gendry scene, but for me Jaqen and Yoren stole that scene. Jaqen is perfectly cast. I did not have doubts really, but you never know until you see the performance. Tom Walshiha was brilliant! Yoren was always a bit of a disgusting character to me until that scene when he steps up to show he is more than a sour-smelling recruiter. I like him a lot more in the series I think...
~ "Try smiling with your lips closed. Better..."
Theon gets all the sexposition scenes... Is it just me or is he more ripped this year? I bet he was expected sex scenes and trimmed down to be camera ready XD
Tyrion and the Small Council part 2 was as fun as part 1 I think, but Tyrion and Jonas Slynt was superb! I love how they played out the scene even if it was a bit different than the books. I don't recall Bronn becoming the Gold Cloaks commander.... That's a fun surprise!
~ "Well, that was unladylike....."
Speaking of unladlylike.... Yara/Asha was better than I expected. She still does not look remotely similar to how I pictured her or she was written up, but Gemma Whelan did a good job capturing hte spirit of the character formely-known-as Asha.
~ "And how do you feel about that?"
Balon jumped out of the pages of the book in the form of Patrick Malahide. Wow, BRILLIANT performance! Spot on!
~ "Do you think I care [about losing the people]?"
Well Cersei.... you just might care down the road.... She needs to just accept that Tyrion has a better grasp of politics than herself. And so her inner crazy begins to really show itself...
~ "Sallador Saan is a trusted friend. I've known him 30 years.... I've never trusted him." XD
Jon, Jon, Jon! Haven't learned that blind honor gets people in trouble? Think of your head Jon!
I would have preferred this episode were called "The Iron Price". It just seems to fit the episode better as well as the theme of the season in my mind. The Night Lands was hardly part of the episode in my mind....
That one small picked nit aside, this was an awesome episode. You can really see beginning of the lines being drawn and the plans for conquest of the Iron Throne.....
Overall not as strong as the first episode though it had some amazing bits
“I don't think Lord Varys likes fish pie"
All the innuendo in that scene was perfect.
"Well coz he had armour on"
I love the Arya and Gendry scenes with bonus Hotpie and Lommy
"Dwarf? You should have stopped at Imp"
Tyrion continues to be amazing. Loved the Cersei/Tyrion scene when he realises she didn't know about the bastards getting killed. So heartwrenching when she talks about their mother.
The Ros/Little Finger scene, why? Like really we know he is a ruthless bastard and everyone hates Ros on screen so we didn't need this at all! Whose idea was it to create the character of Ros? She is fast turning into Lucy from Boardwalk Empire.
Overall I liked this episode better than last weeks. I had hoped to see Brienne, but I guess I have to wait another week. Instead we got our first look at Gilly and I thought she did a good job. I pictures her a bit different, but she´ll pass. I also pictured Yara different, but man did I like her. She did a great job and I loved the scenes on the Iron Islands. I never really enjoyed them in the books, so it took med by surprice how much fun I had with these scenes.Tyrion.....well, as always his scenes/dialogs were the very best. I know I´ll say it after ever single episode, but Peter D. is just fantastic. Loved the scene with Tyrion and Varys, and Tyrion/Bronn. Ary and Gendry were good, Jaqen H. was brilliant, can´t wait to see a lot more of him.
I love Littlefingers character, so it irritates me that he has to be wasted on bad scenes like the one with Ros. I dislike her as much as you and they could put Littlefinger to much better use.
There were a few scenes that made me cringe in a bad way: Ros/Littlefinger (the only plus side to that scene was that Littlefinger's special brand of cruelty shone through) and the last scene with Melisandre/Stannis really didn't do it for me either. Really liked Yara, pretty much how I imagined her! And man, I practically shuddered through that scene with her and Theon on horseback! It's deliciously disgusting. :p
And man, how awesome is Davos! What a perfect casting for a great character. And as Darque pointed out, Jaqen was great! In fact, I loved all the scenes with the Night's watch travelling north from King's Landing. Yoren rules :).
For whatever reason, as again I just get the most loathsome feeling from the Greyjoys, his sister intrigues me. There is something about the character I like in terms of her brightness and tenaciousness that makes her interesting to watch. I got to say though, It was nice to see some real emotion and pain from Cersei. It's nice to know she cared about something, and it seems like the loss of her mother is her driving point. I hope we learn a little more about that...
Jon must want to die! --More baby killings!
And I also really loved the Ary and Gendry scenes and am excited to get to know Jaqen! (I did a little wiki snooping on the character...)
And as for Stannis and Melisandra...that table does not look comfortable. (and is there something to having a "son" and the "sun"?!)
Littlefinger is just such a jerk, as always. I would hope some prostitute would just slap and shake him to death, but he probably would enjoy that.
Oh and the the guy's head sent back on his horse to Dany and crew, really gross!
Despite liking Littlefinger, oddly, I think that the problem with the brothel scene was Littlefinger and not Ros.
That scene was like 4 minute or more long and Ros was really only a part of it for 2 seconds as she ran from the room and then 20 or 30 more seconds as she told Baelish what was bothering her.
IT was basically 4 minutes of Littlefinger storytelling a tale that showed us aspects of him we already knew and did not need to see. Ros was actually quite good in it I thought.
I wish that scene had been less time witht the john, and then 2 minutes less of Liottlefinger telling his tale and I would have been fine with the scene.
I would love to know if people, who haven´t read the books find this season harder to follow?
Most of the fans have read the books and we are so happy and excited to see Davos, Jaqen, Gilly ect. turning out good on screen, but I wonder if it confusing for people who don´t already know the characters.
I am still not crazy about Stannis and Melisandra.
I would say a little bit...For me I try to rewatch it once so I can pick up on things a little better. On the second go around it's easier to catch the dialog better, because your not as distracted by the initial visual presentation...But HBO's GOT website also really helps if you find yourself confused.
The few non-readers that I know watch it find it hard to keep up. They get it after they are told connections once or twice, but they simply are not used to keeping track of 30 or more characters on a series. Most shows have a handful or regulars.. maybe 10 including supporting cast.
Game of Thrones is just so different that way. Large ensemble shows are different breeds than most TV series, both in pacing and style. I love them, but they aren't for everyone I guess.
I like Dillane as Stannis, but I still think he would have made as good or better Davos and Liam Cunningham would have been perfect as Stannis instead of Davos! XD
However, I agree completely on Mel. D&D's interpretation is nothing like how I read Melisandre and CVH is even less like her.
I dealt with this same feeling every time Cersei was on screen last season and this season Cersei has finally won me over (because the performance has changed dramatically). I can deal with Melisandre I'm sure, but hopefully she will grow on me before the season ends. I'm hoping for big things in the upcoming episodes with the scene featuring Renly ... and Brienne and Catelyn of course! XD
I´m sure it must be so difficult to follow. It is a completely different way of making a show, but I love it. True Blood also have a lot of storylines, but they don´t seem to pull it of. GoT is really one of the only shows I´ve seen where it really works.
Cersei´s presence has changed indeed. It´s almost like it is a different actress. I´m not sure what to thinkof it yet. I´m not a big Cersei fan in either the books or the show. Joffrey however has made a huge impacked on me on screen.
I´m sure Stannis will turn out ok. He is really quite a boring character, so it will take a little time to fall in love with him. Not sure I´ll ever like Mel.
But as long as Brienne turns out like I picture her, I´ll be happy. Davos, Jaqen, Gilly and Yara already did.
I haven't read SVMS either, but True Blood IMO is way easier to follow. I think what makes GOT a little harder is that it's highly political all the time and it's not just a large cast, but a HUGE cast, and we continuously meet people and even new locations, and some times even belief systems, almost every episode. The dialogue is also done in a way where it's not directed at the audience so much, but more like we are on the outside looking in trying to make sense of all of these images, ideas, and history presented. I am assuming since the book is different in the sense that it's done character by character perspective, that not giving dialogue to the audience just simply to make us understand, makes up the difference for not being able to see the events in each individual head space.
But I like the idea and understand the need on screen to show it more historically...it adds a bit of mystery to it, as the audience has to decide for themselves what they think any of them are thinking...That being said. I did pick up the first novel yesterday. I think because I am reading it after the series, it will be more like an in depth guide.
For my liking, too much of the "new" characters, too little of Starks in this one. I mean I know that's how it was in the book too, but I love the Starks too much to deal with an episode with no Robb, no Bran and no Sansa at the same time.
I am loving Jon's storyline already, I desperately need more beyond-the-Wall scenes. LOVED the Arya/Gendry scenes, althugh I didn't think the reveal of her identity would come that soon. The Greyjoys annoyed the hell out of me in the book, so I didn't expect it to be any different here. Although I think Yara is nothing like Asha. I imagined her more... sharp... if you know what I mean.
Also, no idea why the hell that Ros scene was there AGAIN. Seriously, she gets more screentime than any of the Stark kids and it wasn't even in the books!
Great episode! IMO not as good as the premiere though. Solid performances from everyone! Excellent intoduction of Jaqen, but overall my "problem" was that it felt a little slow and setup-y. However that was unsurprisng and kinda expected. I had the same feeling when going through these segments in the book too.
Some other notes: - I can totally get on board with Ironhand being eliminated and Bronn taking up those bits. Sensible production and storytelling move. Though a little sad. I liked Ironhand... - Lena and Peter own me! - Arya-Gendry-Yoren etc was great! And as I said above Jaqen totally rocks. - Something's off with the Pyke stuff.... I love Balon, and Alfie's always great, but I'm not feeling the rest of it.... and that is such a huge disappointment. I was realy looking forward to that storyline. - Still "Meh" on Melissandre, but still Head over Heals for both Stannis and Davos.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to mourn Rhakaro some more.... *bawls like a baby*

Tonight's episodes promo stills from HBO:
ReplyDeleteWell said! But you missed Ghost! Who was amazing.
ReplyDeleteFavourite part of the episode had to be Gilly's line to Sam. "You're very brave" LMFAO
Indeed, that was the quote I should have used! XD
ReplyDeleteThat had me rolling....
Overall not as strong as the first episode though it had some amazing bits

Ah, so true about the comparison to Lucy!
ReplyDeleteGhost had me practically jumping from my seat.. I cannot believe how big these direwolves have gotten. But indeed, he was really well made!
ReplyDeleteYeah I would much rather have Littlefinger having wonderful conversations with Varys or Tyrion rather than annoying Ros!
ReplyDeleteIt just like came to me, hopefully she will go the same way as Lucy and never be seen again!.
ReplyDeleteLove Ghost
ReplyDeleteAgreed. In next weeks promo it looks like he will be talking to Tyrion. can´t wait for that conversation.
ReplyDeleteAs someone wrote on a Thrones fansite yesterday.... Jaqen H'ghar is the Bobba Fett of Game of Thrones. XD
ReplyDeleteThe character with little page time or screen time, that many.many fans seem to love!
I am one of them... Guilty.
