That first Tyrion and Cersei scene was pure Lannister GOLD!"... and your cheekbones..."
I think they're going to need a bigger Hodor or in a season or two Bran will be dragging his feet on the ground behind Hodor! XD
IT was noted in various reviews, but I LOVED the scene switches focusing on the red comet! Perfect transition technique!
It still takes me a few looks to get accustomed to Dany having her full head of hair after the burning birth of her dragons in last year's finale! It just feels wrong to me as I watch her at tis point of the saga with all that fire-proof hair! XD
Craster was every bit as rude as I imagined, but oddly less creepy. XD
Dragonstone looks incredible! The burning of the Seven was great! The Chamber of the Panted Table room was great! Maester Creesen was great! Stannis was great! Davos was great! Melisandre... meh.
Grey Wind looked AMAZING! Best CGI I've seen on TV The first moment when Robb ran his hand over GW's fur it did not look quite right to me, but then they switched to the real fur or animal in close ups and all was good....
Wait what? Cersei finally makes an appearance! I mean the Cersei I read in the books finally showed herself! Is Lena Headey finally getting the character? Huzzah!
You just got slapped! Ohhhhoh. That puts the Joffrey slap count at 1. May many more follow.
Ros will actually be quite good in this role! Okay still unneeded sexposition, but she handles the role well.
BRILLIANT first episode back! I cannot wait to see the dire wolves in action this year after the little peek tonight! All the new cast is winning me over other than Melisandre, but maybe she will in time.
They killed the babies, the toddlers, the tweens and the teens! XD
Ya Robert was a bit of a dog for being a stag! XD Like Jaime told Jory (days before stabbing him in the eye), Robert would do them 4 or 5 at a time and make him listen outside the door.
Is Cersei still lying to herself that she is in any kind of control? I want these people to go down! Hard! :-) Lots of awesome scenes. Loved the that Stannis (that is the older brother, right?) recognized that Ned's secrecy was a bit of a miscalculation and decided to spread the word about Joffery's parentage. Shoot....all the story in this ep was great. Was happy to see the direwolf shown as bigger. I know it wasn't technically perfect enough to completely fool the eye but I thought it was awesome anyway. Awesome ep.
Are you not counting when Tyrion slapped him season 1?
I haven't read the books so...it seems that putting things in context for non-readers might not be as high on the list this season? (Though that might not be a fair judgement after one episode.) The lack of context didn't affect my ability to follow or get caught up with what's going on. I guess that's good.
For how complex and layered the books are I think D&D do an incredible job crafting the story and making it easy to follow. It may not be as easy as the typical network series, but everything you need is there is you look and pay attention.
I think you are probably right on your assessment even if basing it on only one episode. Season 2 moves much faster than Season 1 did. It is also less linear. Season 1 was almost a closed story following the rise and fall of Ned Stark. Now everything begins to branch out and all the characters go separate ways, and as they do more locations and more characters get introduced.
For the next 3 or 4 seasons (depending on how they arrange the books into the series) the world of Game of Thrones will continue to expand and grow in scope and depth. If anyone thinks it is complex now.... brace yourselves! We have only met about 1/3 of the characters in the saga so far. OF course they edit out minor roles (that all the readers miss) and combine roles into a single series character to streamline the story... so I doubt we will meet all 900 or so players in the saga.
After that the events and characters start to pull back into the central plots... in theory. XD
The Lannisters always seem to get the best verbal exchanges! Tyrion is just amazing, but what Cersei does to Little Finger is just priceless too! --But the slaughtering of Bastards, even babies, was just amazingly sad. The things you can see on HBO! Astonishing! (But it def is needed to add the proper context to the story)...
Because I have yet to read the books, I wasn't expecting "a comet" and I really like how the super-natural aspects of the show kind of slowly creep there way into the story, rather than it being all magic all the time...and this women with Stannis Baratheon is interesting. Looking forward to getting to know her better! She's seems horrifically evil!
I also love Brams prophetic dreams and his talks that continue with Oshie (sp?) But I wonder how long this relationship will last?
Oh and finally Sensa is physiologically starting to dance around her stupid mentally challenged King!
Not much progressed with Dany, but I can't wait to see where she goes next!
It looks like Jon has become a protoge' to this great man of the Nights Watch?!
I never know how I feel about Robb, but I think Greyjoy is wrong about his father and his father's Kingdom...I smell double crossings in the wind...aren't they Pirates? -Doesn't that alone say something about loyalty?!
I think one of my favorite aspects of ASoIaF/ GoT is exactly what you mention - The way magic and mystical is part of everything without being so in your face. It makes for a very realistic world (although there are more High Fantasy elements in the books that did not make it to the series like bright primary color hair or vibrant colored armor and weapons).
Pirates or Vikings and neither bodes well overly trusting allies!Of all the books you have not read? XDOnce you try them I bet you will enjoy them. There is so much detail and allusion to historical works, religion and philosophy etc... And of course the mystery. A few ongoing questions and prophecies taunt even the most avid fans still after Book 5.
It can be hard to guess spelling of names if you have not seen them on printed page repeatedly! Sansa... Osha.
Everything about that was purely amazing, I loved it all! Seems like it will stay incredibly true to the books, but I like the little scenes they are throwing in there, like the seen between Cersei and Littlefinger and Cersei and Joeffry, and the slaying of Robert's children, which was brutal but a nicely added touch.
However, I almost regret reading the books because I know what to expect, but its great to see it all on television actually being played out.
It was nicely put together, I thought it would be much more confusingly strung together but it worked perfectly
Well that was pretty damn awesome, especially loved the ending because at first I was like oh god no this episode was doing so well having no pointless sex scenes and then it turned itself around and it was both chilling when Robert's bastards were being slaughtered but it kind of made me laugh as well, like Jesus Robert how many bastards did you father?
"There's a king in every corner now"
That is pretty much the Westeros equivalent of a Starbucks on every corner.
Glad to see Tyrion being as wonderful as every and I see Peter has top credit billing, no surprise really he is a force of nature. The scene with Joffrey and Sansa was delightful and also the bit when he announces he is the Hand of the King, oh how I smirked.
+ The Robb and Jaime scene was really damn great, oh the tension. I wondered if they were going to chicken out and not show Grey Wind but they went for it and I didn't think the CGI was that bad
+ Thought they did a god job of covering most of the different plots, liked how they cut from certain locations
+ Melisandre is as menancing and otherworldly as I hoped
+ HODOR!
Seeing as Darque is doing a slap count I shall do some other counts:
+ Dragon sighting count S2 : 1 and looking rather cute on Dany's shoulder
+ Littlefinger Being A Creepy Know It All Shit count S2 : 1 though let's face it this will be every scene he is in
The bad things: - I was a bit disappointed with Tyrion's entrance at the tourney. It's so much cooler in the book. The dialogue as well. - I missed the prologue scene on Dragonstone with Maester Cressen and the comet and a more proper introduction of Stannis and Davos. I had the feeling that such a scene was cut from the episode.
Great first episode of the season, really nicely sets up all the storylines of the season in a great manner. The final scene with the bastards really hit me unexpectedly, and I read the books! They just came to that scene really fluidly, nice perspective in comparison to the books.
Especially great casting of Davos and Stannis, not yet sold on Melisandre. I imagined her a lot more.. exotic from the books. She seems kind of.. plain on screen.
Ha i try that all the time,i remember for 5 or 10 minutes then forgets.I need to get another printer this way i have them in my hands, that is how i will get to know.
Agreed. I know a lot of people like CVH underplaying Melisandre, but to me she is missing the traits that drive her character in the books... Much like Cersei was last year to me. It's early, so I won;t pass final judgement yet! XD
I think for almost anyone that has not read the books it will be hard to recall all the names and locations... or to spell them correctly! I mean what was there last year... 96 characters? Who knows how many locations are mentioned!
The HBO Viewer's Guide is a great tool! Seeing the names in print and reading the geography and history in print really helps to embed it in a person's mind.... for me at least.
If you click on the "i" button next to the "Map" and "Houses" you can access the Appendix. It has some great histories of Westeros and back story to the series that adds a lot of context they cannot fit into the series.
It really is supposed to establish Melisandre and Stannis (less so Davos I guess) and I do not think it did the job it could have. I'm not sure people understand the signifigance of Stannis and the prophecy or Mel's R'hllor religion.
I find it interesting that there are old Gods, New Gods, but that Stannis came to a type of extreme Monotheism, but I don't know the signifigance of it, except that this makes him an outsider in terms of his philosophy, but it's unclear to me why she find's that appealing or important...and how the prophecy came to be considered such. I guess it's partially because I really don't know these people yet, but I agree with you that it's a little confusing and not very spelled out, but perhaps when I rewatch it, I will listen better.
It all goes back to "how the West-eros was won" (pardon my pun).
The First Men were the early comers and worshiped the Old Gods, but when the Andals invaded 6000 years ago they pretty much took over the continent... accept for the North and beyond the wall. That is why the Old Gods are still worshiped in the North and beyond The Wall.
The Andals brought with them their religion. They worshiped The Seven (Father, Mother, Warrior, Maiden, Smith, Crone and Stranger).
On The Iron Islands (where Theon Greyjoy is from) they worship The Drowned God... yet another religion.
This new monotheistic religion is from the Eastern most part of Essos and is more common on Essos in the East, but a relative newcomer on Westeros.
You can fairly easily see The Old Gods as nature worshipers or Pagans with their runes and mysticism, The Andals as the Roman Empire with their superior language and science, and this new far East monotheism as Chistianity or Judaism. It does not follow exactly, but you get the idea....
excellent start of season 2. Tyrion still stands out as the most brilliant character in my eyes. As soon as he opens his mouth I am glued to the screen. Loved every little scene he was in.
I´m a big fan of Jaime and really liked the scene with him, Robb and Grey Wind. Grey Wind made the scene so much cooler and I thought they did a great job with the CGI.
Littlefinger was as awesome as always.
Davos was well cast and made a good first impression. Stannis.....not so much. Hope it turns out for the better in the nest few episodes.
Solid episode. - Not impressed by Melisandre. - Tyrion was Great and Cersei was good too even though I hate the character. (It's a good hate, unlike Joffrey whom I wish would have fallen to his death at the hands of Sansa in the S1 finale even if it is a huge deviation from the books.) - The more vast the story becomes the more scene changes we'll get and the shorter the scenes will be. It's already starting. I don't like it but it's a necessary evil for this series that I'm willing to put up with. - Craster is disgusting but definitely a memorable character. Good job with that one. - Oh how I wish Grey Wind would have taken a little bite out of Lannister. - I wasn't expecting a bastard massacre right of the bat. I actually chuckled during that montage at the thought of how much the former king was getting around. - I thought that everything in the brothel except for the baby killing was unnecessary. I would have rather had some of the other scenes extended. - I can't help but think that Emilia Clarke got the short end of the filming stick to begin this season. So many beautiful locations and she gets the middle of nowhere under a blazing sun.

ReplyDeleteYa Robert was a bit of a dog for being a stag! XD
Like Jaime told Jory (days before stabbing him in the eye), Robert would do them 4 or 5 at a time and make him listen outside the door.

Well, at least he didn't marry them.
ReplyDeleteGood start of the season for me, not quite awesome but alot of set up for future eps that I am looking forward to.

ReplyDeleteWow, i can't believe he had all those children and babies killed, that was pretty gruesome.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Joffey to get his
so pumped this is back..loved the dire-wolf, rob, and jaime scene..must watch it again to fully get everything
ReplyDeletelmao what can i add to this?? xD Grey Wind was amazing! Now I need to see Ghost!!!

2 Dragon sightings actually (Kinda)
