Grey's Anatomy - Who's the "Big Death"?

26 Apr 2012

Twitter is on fire tonight with news that there will be a character death in the Season 8 finale of Grey’s Anatomy. Not just any character, we are ‘reliably’ informed that it is a beloved character. William Keck, of TV Guide received an exclusive interview with show creator Shonda Rhimes delivering the devastating news that one of Seattle Grace Mercy Death West’s brightest stars will evaporate into TV history come this May.

Speculation on who it could be naturally starts with the knowledge that several actors who have been with the show since day one have expiring contracts this season and more than one has expressed a desire to leave. With four episodes left there is plenty of screen time to develop plot lines leading towards the finale drama and thoughts might evolve over the coming weeks but in the meantime here are some words to chew over.

There are many reasons why a showrunner might decide to kill a beloved character in a successful show. From the actors’ perspective things to consider include expiring contracts, relationship to producers and personal circumstances. From the creative perspective the main considerations are progression of the story, creative drama and to maintain story and character realism; being true to the show. The combination of actor and creative perspective along with the calculated risk to viewing figures and advertising revenues will determine whether it’s appropriate for a character to die. After all, big bucks are at stake with the success or failure of such a move. A show can live or die on it – no pun intended.

Keck says:
“Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has confirmed to me exclusively that a beloved character will die in the ABC drama's May 17 season finale.”
Shonda says:
"A lot of our writers were crying, which is a very rare thing," she says. "There's some really shocking, horrible moments."
"People's mettle is going to be tested."
“I understand the choice I made, but it scares me how fans are going to react."
“The ominous (Vonnegut) quote, Rhimes says, was just what she needed to give her "...the courage to do what we're doing in the finale."
“It's sort of the medical case of their lives”
"there are certain characters on this show that you can't kill. It wouldn't be acceptable not only to the audience, but to me and my vision of what this show is. They can't die."
William Keck tweeted – a series regular, he wrote – a beloved character. These two are not necessarily the same thing. The most obvious ‘beloved’ character who is not a series regular is Adele. Is it Adele? Let’s get this out of the way first. No. Adele may die but much as I like this character I don’t believe her death would prompt Shonda to say “it scares me how fans are going to react”. Moving on...

Here are the runners and the riders for the Grey’s season finale FATALITY and ultimately my view on who it will be. Its possible more characters may leave but for now we’ll just concentrate on who’s gonna die.

Meredith or Derek
For: Both actors have expiring contracts and both have, at some point in the last year, indicated a willingness to move on from the show. Despite the drama that has befallen Meredith and Derek over the last 8 seasons the couple are together and happy. Should one or both of the actors decide to leave the death of either Meredith or Derek would be the only legitimate end to this couple that Shonda could deliver for her fans. Any other kind of separation would be a bitter pill to swallow. The death of either would give enormous drama for season 9, should there be one, and allow for new original story lines.
Against: As well as expressing a desire to leave Patrick Dempsey would like to prioritise his career in racing ahead of acting. Racing is expensive and Grey’s provides a regular income to supplement his sport. It is more likely, and oft touted, he will return to the role as a recurring character. Ellen Pompeo has kept her cards close to her chest but it is more likely ABC has worked very hard to keep her in the show, given she is the original title character. In my opinion Meredith and Derek are two of the characters Shonda refers to when she says “there are certain characters that you can’t kill”. Derek’s been touched by death and came back already and if Meredith can survive a near fatal drowning and bomb disposal surely she’s good for another season.

Cristina or Owen
For: Sandra Oh has ‘apparently’ expressed an interest in spreading her wings beyond Grey’s. She is by far the most talented actor on the show with the broadest range from impeccable comic timing to dark angst. This makes her an easy steal for the movies. Owen and Cristina have been tortured by Shonda this season. The primary relationship focus has been the destruction of these two souls. She has ripped them apart on the basis of fundamental values whilst successfully persuading the viewer that these two love each other despite all. It is difficult to conceive of a way in which they can be happy again. The death of Cristina would be epic, horrific. It would indeed cause Shonda to worry for fan reaction. It would take courage. Mostly, it would be believable. It would provide an ‘acceptable’ end to the marriage dilemma but more importantly it will provide the show’s writers with extremely fresh and suitably dramatic material for season 9. The fall out of such a death would be immense and far-reaching. For Meredith it will turn both her and the show back to it’s dark and twisty best. It will torture Owen further. And characters such as Teddy and Alex will also feel the vibrations.
Against: There is nothing to suggest Kevin McKidd has any intention of leaving the show at this point. Killing off a beloved character like Cristina, and she is beloved, may well be too much of a risk for the show. Sandra may leave but they may give her the option to return in the future. Besides, we almost lost her already didn’t we?

Callie or Arizona
For: A happy couple must always be on the look out for a dark and twisty turn in the road. Twenty episodes down and these two are still floating on the cloud of romance and happiness. It cannot last. Sara Ramirez has stated on a few occasions her desire to return to the stage and Broadway. Her contract may not be expiring but it’s possible she may have indicated to Shonda enough is enough. Some speculation exists that Jessica Capshaw’s contract expires end of Season 8.
I am reminded of the scene back at the beginning of the season when Owen and Callie are on the precipice of the sink hole and Owen tells Callie it should be him not her who goes in, she has the family...foreshadow? And then there’s this - Arizona has not yet had her required near death experience.
Against: It is difficult to understand how either of these two characters could exit so abruptly when the emotional focus this season has been on other characters, especially the originals. I believe Callie falls in Shonda’s category of characters you can’t kill. I think the woman is actually in love with Callie and idolises Sara Ramirez. And I don’t believe Jessica Capshaw has any intention of leaving. Besides – this would take serious Calzona screen time – just not happening - and an epic amount of baby bump hiding. The ‘death’ of Callie was dealt with quite adequately last season and Arizona is not a big enough epicentre on the show.  Season 9 with a smaller cast could be good for this couple.

Alex
For: His contract is up for renewal and if I were Justin Chambers I’d ditch a show that can’t provide a decent storyline for me. I’m a bit tired of hearing how much Alex is growing and tired of seeing him with weird women. It seems we hear this every season and it never really happens. Alex did kind of die at the beginning of the season – was this foreshadowing?
Against: Although Shonda tells us Alex has a grown up moment I’m not sure his character has been through a big enough emotional journey to justify character death. This would have an impact but not one that will linger long. Alex was shot, nearly died and still came out of it his ass like self.

Bailey
For: Chandra Wilson has also come to the end of her contract and she also has a multi-pronged career as a stage performer and director. In my opinion the death of Bailey is the dark horse. She is finally happy. Shonda tells us - "extraordinarily romantic Ben and Dr. Bailey stuff," with Bailey making a decision "that will fundamentally change her life." Bailey’s babies are graduating and moving on. What an epic finale it would be for her to finally find love, potentially a marriage proposal and for her babies to try, and ultimately fail to save her life. When talking about S6 finale Shonda talks about the fact that she absolutely could not shoot Bailey, it was too hard. Hmmm...could this be the event which tests their mettle. It would be an epic season finale and fits with Shonda’s words "It's a great moment. We were joking in the writers' room that if this was the series finale we'd be good to go”. Bailey’s death could linger longest and darkest for Meredith, Cristina and Alex. And again, there’s this – Bailey also has not yet had her required near death experience.
Against: Bailey is a beloved character on the show and it’s difficult to see Shonda having the heart to kill her. But she could do it...
Richard
For: James Pickins Jr has come to the end of his contract. There seems to be little direction for the character of Richard Webber in Season 8. His role has been confused and lacking consistency. Is it possible that Adele could put Richard in harms way? She’s already done it. In his speech to Gary Clark he reminded us of the good life he’s had. He’s loved and cared for Adele. Is it his time?
Against: Webber is a stalwart of Seattle Grace Mercy West. His character could be re-invigorated by the potential romance with Debbie Allen’s Catherine Avery, who would be a welcome addition to the hospital. Where’s the petition I can sign?

Mark or Lexie
For: Let’s put this couple out of its misery once and for all because this romance is unloved by the writers. Shonda tells us something is in store for Slexie fans but I don’t believe the writers’ hearts are really behind this couple. Whilst neither actor is apparently out of contract it is possible that either could leave. Chyler Leigh started the season saying she wanted more time with her family and was rewarded with a deeply dull storyline all through the season. Lexie’s death would provide interesting drama for Meredith, guilt perhaps and a nice direction for Mark, mourning. Eric Dane, looking significantly healthier than the beginning of the season has seen his character really grow; possibly the most character growth of all. It would be ironic to see him die. However his death would provide an interesting storyline for Lexie, Callie and Arizona. I suspect some Calzona fans might be somewhat happy...
Against: Mark is not connected enough with the original residents to warrant Shonda’s warnings, though there is residual tension between him and Bailey. Lexie is possibly still being groomed as the second Grey.

April or Teddy
For: These ladies are simply not strong enough or well enough developed to warrant appearance in Season 9. Sarah Drew’s pregnancy has not helped her Grey’s career.
Against: ...yet neither are beloved enough to die. (How depressing does that sound?). Teddy’s had her story for the season. April has potential to develop into a strong character for next year.

Jackson
Insipid, ineffectual, plastic runt of the resident litter. I’ve no energy to ponder his demise. It won’t happen anyway unfortunately.

So where’s my money?
My shortlist = Cristina or Bailey.
Cristina is one of my two most favourite characters on the show and I really do not want Sandra Oh to leave. But when the personal, professional and creative dots join up and the picture generated is a major character death...what an exit it would be! Or Bailey’s babies desperately trying to save her, and failing - all 8 seasons of medical training and they can’t save their mentor....a grand finale of the dark twisty kind.

I think Bailey edges it.

But remember... it’s all speculation people. I’ve no more idea than you do. And whilst I believe Shonda when she says a character will die, I take everything else she says with a large dose of salt.

  1. Aw, poor Jackson. I love him.

Anyway, Keck already ruled out Meredith and Derek.

Alex is my favorite, so I hope it's not him.

Otherwise, I have no guesses. I'm worried.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't think Keck has any authority to rule anyone out. He's digging himself a big hole.

  3. As I said in another thread, as long as it's not:

    Alex
    Mark
    Lexie
    April or
    Arizona

I'm fine with whoever they want to kill off.  On second thought, I'll add Webber to that list also.

If I had to guess, I'd say that Derek, Christina, and Richard are the top three contenders to be killed.

  4. Sandra Oh has also expressed wanting to continue as Cristina Yang. This was stated in her recent
George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight  interview, which aired on April 5.
Sandra said that she loves her job, the show and the character and that she would love to continue to play Cristina Yang. As you state, she is clearly the best actor on Greys. Without her, the show is definitely poorer, especially since she has been putting out Emmy-worthy material for the entire season. As a Sandra Oh fan, I want her to stay more than anybody else.

With regards to the CO storyline, Shonda Rhimes stated in an interview with Natalie Abrams that "in the episode before the finale, you will feel like you know what's going to happen to them, but their journey really does continue."  She says she believes that "they ultimately belong together." That seems like Season 9 storyline.

  5. Could it be Zola or Sophia?  Not sure what all the qualifications/spoilers have been, but if you're talking depressing, massively dark impact you might just have to include them.

    ReplyDelete
  6. This might possibly be true. The death of a child would have depressing impact on everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think will be Arizona, just because JCap wants to focus on her family, she has 2 little kids and one who will be born on the summer, so, probably she asked to be released (or don't renew) her contract, and this little line that shonda said: "I understand the choice I made, but it scares me how fans are going to react ", she knows that Callie/Arizona fans are really loyal and vocal, probably the most of all the fans on this show, and she knows that if she does something to them a LOT of people will be angry/sad/whatever.

  8. hahahaha great i like this part "
His character could be re-invigorated by the potential romance with Debbie Allen’s Catherine Avery, who would be a welcome addition to the hospital. Where’s the petition I can sign?"

  9. I sort of hope it's Cristina just because poor Sandra Oh just keeps getting saddled with these horrible storylines and deserves better.

  10. I'm way behind on Grey's but I think Webber, Bailey, Arizona or Christina.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think it would be Bailey or Cristina!! I'm starting to get freaked out! :s

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think it might be Arizona. She is a beloved character on the show and i love her character. That would really change Greys

  13. Maybe April would kill herself ofr failing the board...that would be nice, like it was nice to see Erica's death in private practice, not because I liked that(believe, I almost cired..) but it would be nice for the show...I've never imagined a character take his own life ins this show...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, but maybe Morgan's baby could die this season, so 2 babies dying is too much...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it's going to be Webber. He already lost the love of his life, he already said he was done two seasons ago, maybe this fling with Cat is a farewell, to reach the end of the book with a sweet note.

    ReplyDelete
  16. if i undestood correctly the beloved character  dying is a regular who's been in the show right from the start right?
so we have Webber, Bailey, Alex, Meredih, Cristina and Derek
Mer and Der are not going to die, we all know that Keck kinda ruled them out
truth be told, the one i wont be missing much is webber, so i hope it's him

GOD PLEASE LET IT BE HIM
but then again.... shonda's worried about the people's reaction... could the chief's death be a shocking impact to the fans?

  17. im gonna go super obvious and say Adele.

    ReplyDelete
  18. there is nothing to confirm it's a regular who's been with the show right from the start. So it really could be any of the cast.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not Adele. Loretta Devine has already confirmed via tweet that she will be back next season.

    ReplyDelete
  20.  in a pine box

    ReplyDelete
  21. But nobody really cares about Morgan's baby, since he is not the baby of a regular character and she is just a guest star. Only Zola and Sofia matter when it comes to babies on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  22.  so what? shonda's giving herself the luxury to kill someone important, besides having her cast leaving? her core cast?
    stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's always possible that other members of the cast request to leave. Under those circumstances Shonda can do as she wishes with the character. Killing the character need not be a 'stupid' decision if it helps the drama of the following season.

    ReplyDelete
  24.  yes i see your point it's just that already too much people has left..
first burke and addison ( not everyone watch PP)
then George and Izzie ( a completely slap in the face ¬¬)
    and now someone else....
i dont want the show to become ER..

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, so cynical. The person asked if she was exiting gracefully from Greys. She answered, "Not yet boo. I will be on next season."
Also, Keck said that Adele is not in the finale and that Shonda wants to revisit Adele in the home, next season. So count her off the hit list.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think its Christina..

    ReplyDelete
  27. very well..im just not buying this hoopla ill just wait and see.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Honestly, the Bailey thing sound pretty amazing.  Get Meredith, Christina, Alex, and Bailey away from the hospital.  Put Bailey in danger, they have to try and save her.  Maybe throw in Derek and Richard so it's all of the original characters?

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's some harsh commentary about Jackson. I like him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. He say's beloved character and Shonda has confirmed it that way. At no time was it mentioned currently on the show.  So what if it's the new's that Izzie has died she was a beloved character.
The Bailey and Webber idea's are also good one's which could cause a lot of drama and distress a lot of people sending them all dark and twisty.
Untouchables to kill in Shonda's mind hopefully are Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Owen, Callie, Arizona and I'll even put Alex in that group.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have to say I can't find a single flaw in that line of thought. Bailey and Christina make the most likely candidates.

I feel that Christina's death would send people spinning back to a dark and twisty place, whereas Bailey's death would leave an immense vacuum in the hospital that someone would have to rise to fill, which might be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I really need it to not be Webber or Alex... that would probably break me haha..

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it will be a pick between Owen, Cristina and Bailey. In my opinion they have the biggest chance of getting killed off. Callie/Arizona could also be a possibility since lots of people would be angry, but I think Shonda won't kill her lesbian couple story line. I can't imagine it will be Derek... I fear for him the most, but if it's him, Shonda has a gigantic problem with all the MerDer fans! I for one will definitely stop watching the show. I cannot imagine those beloved characters like Meredith and Derek dying. I want to fantasize about them living somewhere happily ever after, together with Zola and possibly more babies, biological/adopted!
I wouldn't mind April, Jackson, Alex, Callie or Arizona dying... but I don't think it's one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good point. I thought the same. Killing off either Arizona/Callie would really piss off a lot of fans. But not me so I don't mind if that will happen. As long as she doesn't kill off Derek or Meredith!

    ReplyDelete
  35. We know it's not April since this big drama happens outside the hospital and April is inside, oblivious to what is happening outside.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Exactly my point. Bailey's death would be most dramatic for everyone. But I'm not sure it's her... if Shonda would kill off Owen that would have an impact on everyone since a new chief could stirr things up, change the way things are done in the hospital. But again, Bailey's death would be more dramatic.

    ReplyDelete
  37. bailey , richard , or alex and maybe callie not arizona

    ReplyDelete
  38. Perhaps, but it's no surprise I'm not a Jackson lover - it's always noted in my reviews. I simply don't understand what people like about it. Please tell me. He's pretty, but that's not enough. He has pretty eyes but the are inexpressive - which is vital in a show where 30% of the action is from the face mask up. Jessie Williams is a one dimensional actor. So what does Avery bring to the show. ...I really want to know.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Christina is my favorite on the show, so I hope it's not her! Please don't kill her or Alex, Shonda!
Anyway I have the feeling that this season finale and this "big death" will be the saddest since George O' Malley's death.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I personally find Jackson to be one of the most endearing characters on the show. I have to disagree with the non-expressive eyes. The surgery with Cristina during the shooting was plenty expressive and the character/or the actor really did not give enough credit imo. Jackson brings a levity to the show that many of the other characters have lost over the years. I find the same with April. The two are often ignored for the more established characters and I would personally love season 9 to focus more on them and Alex, who has also been criminally ignored these past few years.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think it's Richard. That will be emotional for all because he's the father figure.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My money is on Richard, but I think Christina is also a good bet.

    ReplyDelete
  43. WOW Bruce. You nailed it. NAILED IT DUDE. This is my exact list. Webber included.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Completely agree with you about April and Alex. April has had great material very occasionally and does a fantastic job with it. Yet mostly she's sidelined. This season Sarah shot her career in the foot with having a baby but hey, that's life! As mentioned in my commentary above if I were Justin Chambers I'd leave - poor story lines, no development.
Jackson - not there sorry ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Great analysis as always!

Keck is just a little stupid gossiper, he doesn't know the show he doesn't care the show he is just up to play some dirty to get a juicy scoop  shouting names just to get reactions all around.

I think all the shocking rumors are useful to boost the attention (and increase ratings) to this season finale (for free) and NOT on the real reason there is the "sudden" need to kill someone, which is from what I know ONE of the original and beloved member of the cast and because of expiring contracts.
I do believe the speculations can't really take crazy ways because at the end there is the need to have CONSISTENCY with the SL that are in place and the whole show as a unit.
    -original
    -beloved
    -expiring contract
-big impact on the other characters
    -dark and twisty

    I see 3 possible candidates:
    1. Yang
    2. Alex
    3. Bailey

I think is YANG. The effect is more than HUGE, dark and twisty, will affect everyone life and will change a lot of things....starting from Meredith. She is original, beloved, expiring contract, interested in leaving.
    That is my choise.
Her leaving may open a space again for a Teddy/Owen SL.

I really don't know exactely why a lot of people started to talk about Arizona and or Callie. Bothe SaRa and JCap never talked about the possibility to leave the show (or the desire to do it at least for now) on the contrary they both expressed in more than an occasion how much they love their characters and the show. Everything is possible and maybe one of them or both may have suddenly decided to quite the show for whatever reasons but I don't think is this way.
About Arizona, "killing" her is senselss, she is not original, I LOVE her so much but can't really be placed as beloved because she joined the show from mid season 5 and it is not so long, not sure about the expiring contract with season 8 but I don't think so....killing her will hugely affect Callie's and Sofia's life maybe Mark Teddy Alex and slightly all the other characters, will affect the FANS that's for sure, so I just can't see this HUGE impact. Plus the way the season goes for her didn't give any hints in this direction, the writers has just fixed her and both her and Callie after the huge crap in season 7 (and almost killing Callie and they may have take THAT occasion as perfect to eliminate both), and Shonda at the beginning of the season said they have earned the right to have a calm sweet loving season after the season 7 storm a death is not calm sweet or loving.
I feel there will be maybe for her a little (not life threatening) injury because she is one of the few never been injured in the show and we all know it is a GA thing. And C/A as a parallel will leave their little drama with maybe a some sort of cliffhanger for next season.

If it depence by me I will kill Jackson Avery TOTALLY meaningless useless too much present character really a waste screen time. But he is not original definitely NOT beloved I will not be that lucky though ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. But my question is...will that beloved character actually die in the last episode so we have clarity, or will they create some kind of disaster (flight crash) around that character we might think he/she died? I'm afraid that a lot of our beloved charaters will come in harm's way in the last episode. Considering the expired contracts it could be any of them. For me, I just hope and pray it won't be Derek or Meredith or Cristina or Alex or Bailey or Callie or Arizona or Richard...;-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. It is not Cristina or Owen. Shonda already said that their journey continues.. Also, Kevin McKidd tweeted in answer to a question about Cristina and Owen in Season 9, he responded,  "They will struggle, but I truly hope they get thru."
So they can't be struggling, if they are dead, so they are both off the target list.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anyone see the promo picture that was released back in march of Christina at the AIRPORT with Mer & Owen... 98% sure Christina is the leaving :((

    ReplyDelete
  49. that picture was for episode 20, they had been flying around the country for interview's and it was with Mer, Derek and Zola. Owen was no where to be seen.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hate it when there has to been an epic death in a shows final episode... i hoped it would be jackson, but after reading your post, i highly doubt it... I don't think i could take it if it would be, mer/der/christina or baily :(

    ReplyDelete
  51. Shonda in HR confirms we will see A death by the end of the episode. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/greys-anatomy-finale-spoilers-shonda-rhimes-316840

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am a bit late at this party..I am beginning to believe that your choice of Bailey is looking about right. Ohhh how sad that will be if you are correct. Personally there are only two characters on GA that can make me cry like a baby and Bailey is one of them.
You mentioned in your previous review that Shonda likes to plant seeds leading to aspects of a story line. There is part of a dialogue that is nagging me from the last episode that was delivered very deliberately by Torres to Bailey in the OR, just after "the bears with knives" Torres says something like ...Bailey if you don't step up and do something we are all going to die... that sounds pretty foreboding and ominous..and KEPNER with her "JESUS HATES ME NOW.." wow..
btw I am guessing the event is a contagion of some kind, I get that from the "mysterious symptoms" of the newlywed couple of next episode.

Based on each of these summaries on the characters, I bet it is Bailey, that will be truly heart wrenching!  Especially if it is written that the residents cannot save her life and she dies.  That would be huge, I would hate to see her go.  The characters I would like to see go are not "beloved" and would not be missed.

  54. erintheriault1 May 2012 at 17:59

I don't think Arizona is a "beloved" character.  She annoys a lot of people that I speak to about this.  The writers cried when they wrote the death scene, it has to be someone like Bailey....

    ReplyDelete
  55. My money is on Lexie after she talks to Mark.  OR Hunt who suffers for PTSD.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have read somewhere that Bailey, Meredith, Cristina, Alex , Jackson and Mark are safe.I am guessing either Owen ( his story is pretty bad right now, with marriage falling apart , not speaking to Teddy and also would be easy fix to get Richard back as chief) or Richard ( although we might see more of his romance with Jacksons mother and maybe see her as show regular). Both of them are loved but wouldn't ruin the show.Teddy ( really whats up with her right now? I almost forget she is even there, also would open a door for Cristina to take over cardio), April ( has some kinda of nervous breakdown, didnt pass the boards, but guess she is not important enough) and maybe Lexie ( such a bad story line, completely irrelevant to the show at the moment and could be big enough since it would upset Meredith a lot). But not one of this 3 would cause such a shock as they are saying it will be, thats why I am pretty sure its Owen or Richard.Killing Derek is just stupid and they might as well end the show if they do that. Calzona are way to much loved and I know some people that would stop watching the show if they do that ( might be wrong here but I would hate to see either of them go so I dont want to talk about it:) ).So I think its Owen or Richard. Also Kevin McKidd always has some episode roles:P

    ReplyDelete
  57. Great analysis. I have been thinking Derek for days now as I thought it was pretty clear everyone else wants to stay. Derek is being a diva (I'm pretty sure you said that in one of your reviews). My focus was Shonda would kill of one of the originals who wants to leave. And if Derek or Meredith were to go then Shonda would have to kill one of them as breaking them up just would not fly. But after reading your take on this, I feel there could be some truth to what you say. Cristina or Bailey would fit the profile of Shonda description. Hmm so I'm a little bit scared now as Bailey and Cristina are two of my favourites, and I really have doubts that Grey's will survive without Cristina and Bailey, particularly Cristina. I am sure that Grey's would cope without Derek, but I believe without Meredith and Cristina's characters it would die a slow death and that would be sad.

  58. Actually I think Jesse Williams gave it away in an interview 2 days ago that the death was to do with someone's contract. So I'm pretty sure it's an original character.
