FRINGE FRIDAY - Episode 4.18 - The Consultant

Welcome to
WELCOME BACK, FRINGE FANATICS!
This week we are supposed to be getting the 100% cancelled or renewed! How nervous does that make you!? I'm personally just shoving all thoughts of it away as much as possible just to keep myself sane and able to focus on work and school until I know for sure!

Check out my latest post on STV about the thematic tie-ins of "Everything in its Right Place" and what the outcome of this past episode could mean for the future of the show!

THE CONSULTANT
Wow. So last week's episode was a doozy. They killed off the confident, very important (to the red universe) Captain Lincoln Lee... Somehow he can survive a mutant cortexiphan kid's body exploding into fire around him, and then slowly regenerate himself, but a shapeshifter's stray bullet put him down. Go figure.

I've always been a fan of Lincoln Lee so this was hard for me to witness even if we do still have our Lincoln... It seems as though to me that maybe Captain Lee needed to die so that Agent Lee would be able to step in for him and find a new niche in the other universe. It is very obvious that he seems to be quite taken with Olivia and is not necessarily picky between Blue/Orange Olivia, and the red-headed Olivia (as you can see him drooling and moping after both of them in each scene he is in with them....) and who the hell could blame him? Olivia's awesome.

A lot of stuff happened in the end of last week's episode that pretty much changed the advantage of the show to be on our side (at least we're led to believe as much) and now we have Meana (Evil Nina!) in custody. I wonder how much fun we'll have with Blair Brown projecting the nastiest Nina she can muster while Lee and Olivia(s) track down David Robert Jones.

I gotta be honest, with all the pieces on the board (the boat with all those freaks, the press releases about the cortexiphan kids returning, and the news about a 'battle' with the Observers) I'm just about all hyped up on what will happen! I believe that at this point all bets are off, and we're in for a wild ride for the last 4 episodes!

And now, I defer to you:

  1. So, things are getting really interesting, no? I am worried about what will happen when all these forces sort've come together and... fight?

  2. Except in this timeline, alt-Lincoln Lee wouldn't have been burned by Sally Clark because the Cortexiphan children never showed up to help Olivia and Walter cross over. Does this make alt-Lincoln a weaker person? Not really, but just throwing it out there to set the record straight.

  4. Yeah, I realized that, but what I meant was essentially he's the same character, even if this timeline's version didn't go through that. And no, I don't think he's weak, it's what happens when you get shot, I suppose.

  5. The more I think I about Mr. X and about how I believe that person is always a leader of a scientific-theological terrorist organization, the more sure I feel Canaan is working for Jones and trying to get to the cortexifners...

Storylines from Jones and ZFT and Walternate and the shapeshifters were not concluded by the end of season 3....IMO this iteration takes both those unfinshed stories and converges them. Jones and ZFT were trying to activate the cortexifaners for a reason we never came to know...(plus we got a glimpse in the future of another previous time line who Walternate might have become, a leader of a scientific theological terrorist organization, The End of Dayers)

And if we look back at season 3 Walternate, we know he abstracted Olivia's cortexifan and was possibly was going to kill her before using her body mass to extract red Olivia! The next logical step for Walternate if things wouldn't have progressed with Henry and the Machine(s), would have been finding a way to apply cortexifan to his soldiers....the shapeshifters. (we still also don't understand HOW Canaan could tell those who are "good" and "bad" apart and may suggest a type of predetermination exists with him, perhaps hinting at cortexifan...)

IMO this is what Jones is also going to do and I think we should worry about Olivia all the way to the end of the series...

The next two episode titltes, after tonight's, also reflects not being able to stay with loved ones, as some one always seems to have to sacrifice themselves for those they love to be able to survive and have a better life...a theme we keep seeing with Peter and Olivia, Nina and William Bell, and now even the Lees.

I am SO excited for the rest of the season. It's been a GREAT way to move forward and to finally be able to see what the the bigger box is, how much control the Observers have, and how they determine what they deem as "mistakes", which probably ties to trying to preserve their own existence...

    HAPPY FRINGE FRIDAY EVERYONE! XD

  6.  he did make a comment about surviving being burned that a bullet was nothing.. somehow he ended up in the same circumstances.

  7. Yes.But maybe this also suggest like Olivia, he was always marked to be "close to death". He nearly died then in the other iteration.

  14. Gosh, can't wait. And I want to know about the future of Fringe. It's killing me.
I'm not even going to speculate anymore. I was thinking that Alt-Linc might not be dead because I for sure thought if he dies, it would be in Faxulivia's arms. Maybe it's a cover so he can investigate. But what do I know. I'm just gonna let it happen.
Fringe Rocks and it needs to stay.

  15. I think that would be an interesting plot to see him still alive! (It's hard to think that we may not see him again)...but at the same time, because his more identical counter part had a close brush with Sally Clarke before, he may just be Red Olivia's "John Scott".

  16. Think of all the different factors in the War Between The Universes:
                                                                      GOOD:
    1. Our Fringe team: Peter, Olivia, Walter, Astrid, Broyles, and Lincoln.
    2. Nina and Massive Dynamic.
    3. The Other Fringe team: Fauxlivia, Kick-Astrid, RIP the other Lincoln.
    4. Walternate and the Department of Defense.
    5. (Hopefully) Nick Lane and the Cortexiphan kids.
    6. September (if he's still alive).
                                                                       BAD:
    1. Jones.
    2. The human shapeshifters.
    3. The ZFT cult.
    4. Colonel Broyles (though I think he's working with Jones to help his son Christopher).
    5. Jones' Noah's Ark.
    6. The Other Nina.
    7. The rest of the Observers.

    Did I forget any?

  17. HELL YEAH I'M READY FOR FRINGE!!!  :D   I think?

  18. Thanks to forum members Supermodel and JacobsMom, I had another mini idea...

So I kind of forgot about the animal shapeshifters...A lot of us made the connection to "Batman", as "flying rodents" was uttered during the episode, but JacobsMom cleverly also made the connection to "Flying Monkeys", as "being Adam and Eve" of a new species was uttered and even Canaan's name plays on biblical and/or evolutionary human beginnings...(remember what you said Robert about the one Observers looking like the guy from "Planet of the Apes"?!

Supermodel had asked, 'what did we think the point of the animal shapeshifters are?' A question I didn't really ask myself until now...But when I think about Batman and Flying Monkeys I realize there is potential to suggest they "protect" and/or "watch over" something, someone, or some place (a dark place)....like Gargoyles! -Like Observers...

  19. what about August?

  20. I'm still wounded by the lost of Captain Lee may his beautiful face and lovely smile rest in peace.

Alas we must move on and I look forward to Alt Liv fighting through her grief by being a badass and hopefully some Walter/Walternate time because that would be dandy.

  21. August is dead.

  22. Oh there is so much for me to wrap my brain around.I read everything posted here and i swear my brain can't handle it.I'll be back, geez i need to read it again and i swear i'm not dumb but at times i sure feel that way,ha!

  23. Yeah i know but who's to say he can't come back?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think he means the explosion in "Amber 31422". Anything than does not relate to Cortexiphan.

  25. Protectors of the Castle.  The new Regime.

  26. Nobody remembers that alt!lincoln died and we didn't figure out how he meet Nick Lane? Frome 2x22 "Over there part I" where before alt!lincoln gets burned, he looks at Nick and say "Nick?"
Have the writers frget about that?

    ReplyDelete
  27. He didn't die.
He spent several episodes in season 3 in convalescence.

    ReplyDelete
  28. could someone please tell me how much time it is until Fringe Friday - i"m an international fan and it's like 2.19 am here :D I want to help!

    ReplyDelete
  29. So you're saying Jones' flying porcupines are guarding something? What, though? I just assumed they were a failed experiment on the road to "a better human being".

    ReplyDelete
  30. Are you sure he's just not locked out of universes? --And I always wondered about Observers and time travel, can they go back to events they have already witnessed? Do they have a past, present, and future????

    ReplyDelete
  31. I thought that too, but then remembered the significance of the tattoos and then thought of the references to Batman and Wizard of Oz....but the whole episode was a little scary because they live in "the dark"...So I have to assume that IF there is a further agenda with them connected to Jones, that it has to relate to protecting something, or someone in a "dark space/place"...I don't know if this could relate to dark matter and/or black wholes or something....or if it relates to a structure underground?

  32. Thanks Darth!
