Community just won Hulu's "Best in Show" competition. Throughout 5 weeks/rounds, from March 8 to April 11, fans could vote for their favorite show. Renowned critic and fine television connaisseur Alan Sepinwall was in charge of writing a few lines for each show. At first, there were 32 of them, but in the end there was only one survivor. A hint : the runner-up could only be stopped with a bullet in the head.
Community almost got bitten by The Walking Dead, AMC's smashing zombie hit which made it all the way to the final after defeating 4 drama series - always narrowly, might I add (The Vampire Diaries (51%-49%), Fringe (53-47), Breaking Bad (52-48) and Sons of Anarchy (54-46)). But Community fans are changtastic : the show crushed its direct opponents in the comedy category (30 Rock (59%-41%), Parks & Rec (60-40), New Girl (66-34) and Modern Family (55-45)).

Community had a harder time in the final. The Walking Dead's Facebook page (almost 8 million fans) kept mentioning that Hulu competition while NBC's Community page (barely 1.1 million fans) didn't mention it until the last day (before that, Community held strong though). If we had to be logical for a moment, we'd say that it's a popularity contest and given this situation (TWD being watched by a lot more of (young) people than Community), Community should've been eaten alive, devoured, its guts spilled all over the place, you pick the metaphor. Thankfully, we don't have to be logical (also, multiple voting does help) : the Human Beings are awesomely loyal, that's why they won. Last year, Community finished #2 behind Chuck (out of the race this time). And today, Community finally claims its title of best series.

The final words go to Sepinwall himself (who I know is a big Community fan) :
NBC's Community is the best show on TV.
There was previously just a mountain of love letters, fan art and petitions to prove it. Now, it has an award. With the help of its Twitter-happy cast and a tireless fanbase, Community took down AMC's force of a zombie show The Walking Dead by more than 11,000 votes to win Hulu's 2012 Best in Show competition.
Greendale's finest fended off comedy's juggernauts — 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, New Girl and Modern Family — to earn the title. Now, it's officially part of TV's comedy pantheon. And, yes, it's officially streets ahead.

ReplyDeleteCommunity deserves its win. It was an easy pick at every round, except the one with Parks and Recreation, pitting the best comedy on TV against the #2 best comedy on TV. On the other hand, as much as I like Modern Family and 30 Rock, I didn't hesitate for a second in in both those rounds (and I dislike New Girl, so that one was an absolute no-brainer).
The Walking Dead was lucky to get in final in the first place. It easily could have been taken out in the first round against The Vampire Diaries (only 2% separating them !). Then, TWD went on to defeat Fringe (*coughing loudly*), Breaking Bad (*choking and screaming*) and Sons of Anarchy (*coughing loudly*), all those times with a very small margin, nothing comparable to Community's easy wins. But the zombies couldn't take out the Human Beings of Greendale. The Anus Flag shall prevail !
Also, Dan Harmon made the same mildly amusing observation of the appropriate nickname for Community fans (Communists ?) as I did two days ago ( ), and I find that cool. Cool, cool, cool. Also, he should know we answer by the name "Human Beings".
And finally, while Sepinwall's selection is great, and while I know he couldn't fit every single amazing show in there, he left out AMAZING shows like Raising Hope, The Big C, Boss, Shameless, Damages or The League. In my opinion, they had the right to be there, especially when shows like The Simpsons, Beavis & Butterhead, Bob's Burgers, New Girl or Ringer were there. But at last, an amazing comedy prevailed, that's what matters.
Awesome! They're incredibly deserving of the title... now let's hope someone's tipping off NBC.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! Go Community!!! Now we want season 4!!!
ReplyDeleteYay! Six Seasons and a Movie.
ReplyDeleteWow they didn't win by a little they won by 11,000 strong!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day to be a COMMUNIST!!
Love that Community won, I voted probably 50 times for them (pretty sure Hulu's competition allows you to vote more than once), and if not...oh well. TWD is a great show but Community is in my Top 3 favorites, and definitely my favorite comedy (with Parks and Rec right behind it). Hope all this press and exposure will warrant a 4th season!
ReplyDeleteWith all the moronic shows(Two and a half men, Shitney etc.) thats on
ReplyDeletetoday, it's truly awesome when you find a show that feels like it was
meant just for you. Community, and TV in general, is far from the most
important things in life, but i really can't express the rage i'll be
feeling if this amazing piece of entertainment doesn't get a 4th season.
If NBC doesn't renew Community, they really are the true opposite of Batman.
This is just so awesome!! Community totally deserved to take the gold for best show!
ReplyDeleteYAY! Truly awesome! Now with all this exposure I feel good about the season 4...or...six seasons and a movie pleasepleaseplease NBC!
ReplyDeleteNicely done Human Beings!!!
