Intriguing title, isn't it ? It's true : Donald Glover (Troy Barnes on NBC's hit show Community) will play Tracy Morgan in the live episode (6.19) of 30 Rock on Thursday, April 26 ! My whole brain is crying tears of joy as I learn this exciting news. 'Troy' will play a younger version of Tracy Morgan (Tracy Jordan) in flashbacks. He will perform twice, once for each Coast, like episode 5.04. In that first live show, Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) in a few scenes.
Before joining Community, Donald Glover worked as a writer on 30 Rock. He co-signed episode 2.10 (Episode 210) and episode 3.14 (The Funcooker), and popped up very quickly on screen in episodes 1.05 and 3.22. Plus, he lent his voice to... Tracy Morgan in episode 2.02, for the Werewolf Bar Mitzvah clip (which is a little more noticeable in the extended version) — as you know, Donald Glover is a rapper, Childish Gambino. Great impression of Tracy's voice.
Robert Carlock, writer/producer on 30 Rock, told TVLine that the plot of that second live show will revolve around Kabletown’s decision to discontinue TGS as a live show. Liz and Jack welcome the move, since shooting canned episodes will be far less time consuming. But Kenneth tries to convince everyone that live television is worth doing by taking us back through the history of TGS. As a result, a good portion of the half-hour features newly-created flashbacks to old shows, and the cast jumps around playing all of those old parts. Very cool story, if you ask me.

Didn't he actually come up with the Twofer character as well? Excuse my ignorance on that factoid though.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to this!
ReplyDeleteProbably be the best thing about it!
ReplyDeleteI don't watch 30 Rock, but there's definitely a resemblance there! Nice job to whoever did the casting.
ReplyDeleteI've listened to the extended version of "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" (Now I've got the damn thing stuck in my head. Thanks, 30 Rock.) and Glover's Tracy Morgan impression is dead-on. It's uncanny.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of perfect. Like Julia Louis-Dreyfuss doing Liz Lemon last time.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!
