SpoilerTV is now faster than ever

7 Mar 2012

A while ago, back in November the SpoilerTV site was starting to take an average of almost 30 seconds to load. We'd started to lose sight of our users as we added more widget/gadgets and other bloat onto the site.

It was around this time that I decided that we needed to refocus on what the users, ie YOU, actually needed.

As a results we've gone through a pain-staking task of trying to optimize every part of the site as much as possible.

As a result we've now reduced the average page load from nearly 30 seconds to under 8.5 secs. (People with faster connections will get lower times. The average is based on all users inc people on slow connections and mobile)

We've also optimized the site further for those users using the Google Chrome browser and you should see even quicker load times. So now's the time to start using Chrome if you don't already.

Hopefully you'll notice the improved speed times.

Any questions, as usual, don't hesitate in asking away in the comments.

Please also see the Release Notes Page for all other Recent Changes.

  4. Awesome, glad it's loading better for you now.

Remember if it gets slow for you, try the mobile version of the site.

  5. My problem was with the badgeville thing.
The pages never loaded completely and thus would not let me write comments or reply to them.
I don't know if you have attended to that particular problem but things have been much better lately.

Anyway I think it's a good idea to keep to the essentials, for not everyone has a potent computer and there's not much point in having all the gadgets and applications if the site can't respond to the basic need of the "posters to post".  :)

  6. Yep, totally agree. We've optimized a lot of the badgeville system and remove a number of the widgets which were causing the site to load slowly.
Hopefully things should be a lot better now :)

  13. I use Firefox and have never had to wait 30 seconds for a page to load, but did notice faster loading today.  I also use Chrome, just not daily.  I have a question, why does the Welcome, Guest sign stay on my page?  My avatar works so it knows who I am.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yep, people with good connections will be faster. The 30 sec was the average speed for all visitors to the site.

The Welcome Guest is for the Points/Badges system. That is separate from that of the Comments system.

  15. Do I need to sign in everyday?  Some time it shows my points, but most of the time just the welcome sign.  Don't know why I care other than the fact the sign covers up some of the network and home links.  Has not kept me off this great site. ;)

  16. It should keep you logged in longer.

The box should however not cover your Menu/Networks.

We've tested it on Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari and Opera.

What browser and version are you using?

  17. I love how much quicker it's become over the last few months, really was tearing my hair out over it towards the tail end of last year when pages wouldn't load fully often.

Where do I find the Badgeville info now, I've not seen it for some time, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ha, same here :)

It should be at the very top of the page above the Networks Menu.

  19. FF 9.0.1   I signed in again and now my name is on top of the networks.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's where it used to be, well it was covering up the name of the Home button and the first few networks.  But for the last couple of months it's been missing :(  It's not asking me to sign in either, so maybe I'm just in limbo :o lol

  21. Just tried undoing my customising of the site by choosing the default theme and adding back in the banner and welcome bits, but that hasn't brought up the badgeville sign in or points tag :(

  22. Do you use any addon/extensions in Firefox that could cause pages to render differently?

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, and this site is the only one that has things on top of other things. lol  Did that make any sense?  I am still signed in, but still on top of networks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hmm, so you have no addons like Sylebot, NoScript, AdBlock etc?

Could you post a screenshot here so I can see what it looks like. I've retested on all browsers and I cannot recreate the problem at the moment.

  25. When I would be on STV it used to show you if a new comment was posted. That is gone now. I kind of liked that feature.

  26. Sandi, can you drop me an email with screenshot etc

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do have some addons, but nothing that should cause a problem, reminder fox, real player browser player, freemake video converter..How do I get a screenshot?? and post it??  Going to be away from 'puter for a couple hours.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks Andy! I never mentioned it, but all those additions really bloated the site for me personally, so this is a huge improvement! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. No worries.

Can you try with no addons loaded at all. Just to see if it works.

  31. So fast I didn't even see it...But seriously Thanks. I just miss the FB share button. Rarely do I tweet.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ha cool.

We may re-add the FB button at some point. It was one of the slowest bits of code on the site. Hopefully Facebook will improve it;s load time and we can reuse it again.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just saw that now. But it only pertains to me, right? What happened to the general "1 new comment" feature?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmm, not sure what that was.

Where was it displayed on the screen? Was it there permanately or did it appear/popup.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for the update, this is great to know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm not sure  where it was displayed. And I'm not sure If I'm explaining it right either. Let's just say you were reading comments to a (hot topic) post and lots of readers would comment. Instead of having to refresh the page to see if anyone else commented it was just always there. I think it was located right before the post box. You even had the option of turning it on and off.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ah yes. Now I know :)

Yep, that's been disabled currently as it was causing some issues. Hopefully when disqus fix it we'll be able to re-enable that.

  38. Cool, thank you.

  43. disabled all addons and now I am not signed in again, but still covering networks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ok, can you load up the page and then hit the print-screen button and paste it into an email to me.

  47. I have a fast connection but did notice this site loaded a little slower then other sites, nice to have a speed up. Does this mean FB like buttons aren't coming back? (don't mind, just curious)
