-Ratings Breakdown:
The return of CBS’ regularly scheduled Thursday line-up after two weeks of basketball pre-emptions inched past American Idol-populated Fox by 0.2 rating points. In the distant No. 3 spot was ABC, which aired repeats from 9-11 p.m., followed by abysmal NBC and, as always, The CW.
American Idol won the 8 p.m. hour, with a 10.9 rating/16 share in the overnights. But the erosion remains steep with a loss of 26 percent from one year earlier (14.8/23 on 3/31/11). Next on Fox was episode three of Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch, which dipped to second with a 5.8/10 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was down by 25 percent from its week-ago time period opener (7.7/13 on 3/22/12), with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of American Idol (11.6/18) of just 50 percent. One year earlier, Mobbed with Howie Mandel was stronger at a 6.8/10 on 3/31/11 (which benefited by the then stronger American Idol lead-in).
On CBS, The Big Bang Theory scored a solid second-place 9.3/15 at 8 p.m., which increased by 15 percent from one year earlier (8.1/13 on 3/31/11). That led into the return of Rules of Engagement (#2t, 5.8/ 9 at 8:30 p.m.), which is just burning off its remaining original episodes at this point, followed by Person of Interest (#1: 9.2/15) and The Mentalist (#1: 8.7/15) from 9-11 p.m. The Big Bang Theory, Person of Interest and The Mentalist have all been renewed for next season.
In week three news (and opposite The Big Bang Theory), older skewing ABC drama Missing finished third with a still respectable 5.7/ 9 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that dipped by 10 percent from one week earlier (6.3/10 on 3/22/12), with overnight growth from year-ago occupant Wipeout (3.8/ 6 on 3/31/11) of 50 percent. Three-week overnight track for Missing: 7.8/13 – 6.3/10 – 5.7/ 9.
Missing led into encore telecasts of Grey’s Anatomy (#3: 3.1/ 5) and Private Practice (#3: 2.1/ 3) from 9-11 p.m. As a reminder, Private Practice will move into the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour out of Dancing With the Stars for four weeks beginning on April 10. Stepping into the Thursday 10 p.m. hour effective next week is new Shonda Rhimes drama Scandal.
Elsewhere, NBC has nothing positive to report with its combination of Community (#4: 2.4/ 4), 30 Rock (#4: 2.5/ 4), a repeat of The Office (#4: 2.0/ 3), Up All Night (#4: 2.0/ 3) and Awake (#2: 2.5/ 4), which dipped by 32 percent from its improved 3.7/ 7 one week earlier. Both Up All Night and Awake were series lows. If sitcom Downwardly Mobile with Roseanne Barr and John Goodman does get picked-up, NBC should utilize it to anchor Thursday next season.
Over at The CW, healthy The Vampire Diaries scored a typical 2.1/ 3 (#5) in the overnights at 8 p.m. But lead-out The Secret Circle, which is not worthy of a second season, dropped to 1.2/ 2 (#5) at 9 p.m. Comparably, retention for The Secret Circle out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Vampire Diaries (2.0/ 3) was 60 percent.

Crap about Community again.
ReplyDeleteOh, this really sucks for NBC...Please don't remove Community it's the best show on that networking day.
ReplyDeleteSo excited for PoI.
ReplyDeleteSo many lows...Missing is still dropping, Awake at series lows and it was a 1.2 last week, Touch still dropping, NBC is a complete disaster, etc.
ReplyDeleteEverything is down on NBC this season, it`s americas 4th bigget network. Community has nothing to fear after two good runs, yeah they were weak but so was 30 Rock and Parks And Recreation, shows that NBC will fo sho not cancel this season. NBC is going to canel Awake, Are You There Chelsea, Bent, Harry Law (or keep it for the really old people that has Kathy Bates-attractions) and at least Whitney before they move on the next in line; Up All Night. NBC will keep their comedy-lineup with Parks, 30 Rock, Community and The Office for sure. Maybe also Up All Night, but at least those 4.
ReplyDeleteGood to see that people dont like sentimental stuff that Touch delivers, and Person of Intrest, my new fav drama this season deliver.
Marc Berman doesn't make sense. He calls NBC a loser for the night, but yet vampire diaries was lower than all those and is not considered a loser.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I know vampire diaries is the highest rated show on CW. But yet compared to all ratings for Thursday night shouldn't it be considered a loser?
He also makes no sense with the Downwardly Mobile comment. Does placement really matter on NBC? Parks & Rec does decent when Community and 30 Rock was the lead in at 8.
The fact is NBC outside of few shows doesn't have great ratings.
Because the CW has MUCH MUCH lower ratings expectations.
ReplyDeleteYou can't compare the CW ratings to that of the other 4 networks. The CW only has 2 hours a night. And has no programing on Saturday and Sunday.
ReplyDeletehow is it good to see people don't like sentimental stuff in Touch? It's an amazing show, one of the most intelligent shows this season, along with Awake
ReplyDeleteThe CW has different standards and by those standards, The Vampire Diaries is so far the only show that can go above a 1.0 in demos making it a success for that respective network.
ReplyDeleteHe's also labeled other CW shows loser too and that network is completely pathetic. NBC has been doing really bad these last few years, especially since it's supposed to be 1 of the big networks.
I just think people genuinely stopped watching tv. 7 years ago, ratings reached up to 25 million on some shows and now shows barely make 10 million. How times have changed...
ReplyDeleteNCIS still gets 19+ Million, but I do agree more people are watching on Tivo and online/downloads.
ReplyDeleteJust my two cents.
ReplyDeleteWhy should people watch new episodes on TV live when they can record or watch them through so many different media.
In the 80's and 90's people sat down in front of the set to watch the new episodes of a show with enthusiasm because that showing was all there was; now there's no rush, they can even read reviews first to see if they should even bother watching it on Hulu or whatever.
I think the networks have given themselves a kick in the teeth with over-exposure of their new shows and episodes.
I would think that live advertising would make them more money than deals with Hulu etc.
I think the only reason I can think of is so you avoid spoilers and that you can then discuss the show immediatly after it has aired. I can't think of too many more :)
ReplyDeletei think international ratings may save missing it is an internationally produced show and beats NCIS The Voice and American Idol etc. in Canada #1 show their (except Survivor)
ReplyDeleteGood numbers for POI.
ReplyDeleteI think I should start praying or something for Awoke, really hope NBC do not cancel it :(
ReplyDeleteWaiting for Awake's demo, because last week it was listed as "honorable" and scored a 1.2... I don't care if total viewers are down, as long as the demo is up.
ReplyDeleteAwake's demo was a 1.0 last night. And for those who want to know Community's demo, it scored a 1.7 again last night against Big Bang Theory.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's really sad. The show seems like it would've been a better fit on cable or something.
ReplyDeleteOuch, a 1.0? It's definitely a goner, even if it's adjust up to a 1.1 or something. It might actually head into The CW territory soon if this keeps up
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteThis is just depressing. I might just give up on unique, thought-provoking shows.
YAAAAAY 4 POI & TM
ReplyDeleteCommunity did well airing against the big bang theory! It kept steady and was NBC's best comedy of the night 3rd time in a row. It's giving me good confidence for season 4 =D
ReplyDeleteOuch for everything
ReplyDeleteDoes Nikita have any chance for season 3
ReplyDeleteYou can see the status of all shows in our Cancellation Prediction Table http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/09/spoilertv-cancellation-predicator-table.html
ReplyDeleteYou know what's really sad about the low ratings for AWAKE? Just the fact that so many people are missing one of the greatest shows on TV, is all.
ReplyDeleteI know, I'm enjoying it. Hope they don't end without some answers.
ReplyDeleteTouch is in the disappointing category? Interesting. Especially if it starts to sink further in the following weeks...
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or this year there are only a very few new shows that have really good numbers through their whole first season? Wonder if it's really just a proof of how inaccurate the Nielsen system is or people are really not watching tv live anymore...
Person of Interest is one show that is doing very well. It actually seems to be growing in numbers :)
ReplyDeleteOUaT is good, too, I think but not as great as it started. And what else? I really can't think of an other which is probably just a proof of my bad memory or not? Is it possible that the only new show that was able to grow even is PoI?
ReplyDeleteYep, that's the only one I can think of at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to go through this post later to see if there are others http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/09/full-ratings-tables-most-watched-and.html
After Flashforward, Alcatraz etc. I can understand why people do not want to get invested in new serialized shows but AWAKE is such a fantastic show, it could become the next "Lost"
ReplyDeleteSecret Circle is dangerously approaching Hart Of Dixie/Gossip Girl territory. I know that's because TVD dropped as well, but it speaks volumes about TSC's inability to hold its own.
ReplyDeleteEverything dropped in the last two weeks, including SPN, but Nikita is steady. It doesn't say much.
ReplyDeleteOuch for TVD and TSC, I hope it was just a one time thing. TSC was fantastic last night, wonder why it dropped so much and the same to TVD. It makes me as angry as when I see Fringe's ratings. We need a new ratings system to measure how many people actually watch the shows or we'll keep losing the good ones to the Nielsen BS.
ReplyDeleteAS far as I recall Person of Interest is the only new show this season to actually GROW in numbers from its premiere.
ReplyDeleteOnce has been fairly steady, but it is down 20-25% from its premiere numbers...
A few shows stabilize after their initial drop and move back up, but I cannot recall a series that improves on its premiere numbers in a long while.... I could be wrong.
The Secret Circle seems to be lead-in dependent.
ReplyDeleteOn the CW, Ringer, 90210 and Nikita were steady. And while SPN dropped slightly, TSC's loss in total viewers is massive. That's worrysome to me. I hope it doesn't get adjusted down.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't change the fact that Secret Circle numbers are worthy of renewal, but I believe it's reached a 50% drop in the demo since the pilot. I don't think the show will live to see a third season.
I'm hoping a new night would help, and the ratings can go up again, they have before. The show is getting so good, so I have hopes it will live for many years. I think Ringer is clearly dead. Out of all the new shows, TSC has the bigger chance to survive IMO, but I'm still worried about it, and also for PSN/Nikita. I think those shows are great yet the CW renews ANTM and will certainly renew GG and 90210 first. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteI think we'll only be sure of that if it's moved to anther night
ReplyDeleteKlutzy, I really wouldn't worry about Community ;). It's going to get renewed.
ReplyDeleteCommunity is the #1 show on Thursdays on NBC since its return. It did almost as good as a new episode of The Office on March 15 (2.2 vs. 2.3), and with The Office on repeat last week and last night, Community became the most watched show of the night : a 1.7 on the 18-49 demo eight days ago and 1.7 last night, too. That's good, it's ahead of 30 Rock (which did 1.5 on March 22 and yesterday as well), better than Up All Night and Awake (both of them will get cancelled with those numbers, or else it'll be a toss-up for renewal between Up All Night and Shitney).
The important fact, that this Marc Berman guy fails to mention, is that Community is STEADY at 1.7 on the key demo despite the return of The Big Bang Theory with a new episode. That should put Communoty in the winner section, if you ask me. But this guy is putting Community in the loser category because he just doesn't like it, I think, or because he doesn't like that many people care about the show's ratings. Now that I think of it, this guy should write for TV by the numbers. What's funny is that he thinks a multi-camera sitcom with Roseanne Barr and John Goodman (who I think is awesome, don't get me wrong) is the right move for anchoring the night next season. Has he ever heard about networks triyng to appeal to a young demographic and that NBC isn't TV Land (where Betty White and Fran Dresher have their shows) ? Community is skewing very young, the numbers on the 18-34 demo (especially male) of episode 3.11 have proven that, that's another argument for NBC to keep the show for a fourth season.
Awake is so good, sighs and what annoys me is they actually managed to make it quite accessible, the premise is fairly simple and they always make it clear what universe he is in. So its not overly complex but still works for more geeky fans as well. Yet the audience just haven't caught on, still wonder if it was on another network whether it would do better.
ReplyDeleteI hate the Mentalist, that show is wrong in all ways except by the fact that women just watch because of Simon Baker's charming attitude. That's just ridiculus. I watched Missing, Touch and Awake and I think that they're better shows.
ReplyDeleteI think it was doomed from the start sadly.....
ReplyDeleteGreat older actors are not appreciated by the masses in the US, at least not enough to get large viewership numbers and definitely not demo ratings. Having Jason Isaacs, Cherry Jones, Steve Harris and BD Wong sounds incredible to anyone that likes good actors, but to most US viewers it means little. If this was about a kid or teen that lost both his parents and had some hot younger actor as the lead I bet it would have better ratings. It just saddens me.
Or if Isaacs was a wise-cracking type.....
Regardless, Awake is one of the best series to come out this year even if the numbers do not represent its quality. I guess they rarely do after all.
Ooh, good!
ReplyDeleteI want to watch that Roseanne/John show, tbh. I loved the show Roseanne and I want to see them reunited!
I never really thought of it in terms of the actors, you are probably right they are great but not really known to the audiences NBC want
ReplyDeleteYes it is definitely one of the strongest new shows of the 2011/12 season and maybe it will be able to stand well as a single season
I've never understood the show's appeal either. If that character did half the stuff he does in each weekly episode he would be in jail for all the laws he breaks! XD
ReplyDeleteSo unrealistic it is beyond silly.
Community's numbers aren't great and I doubt that Berman is a hater. Still Community will be renewed. Yeah! The biggest reason is because it is now in syndication and they need more episodes to make that syndication work. Community is sitting more pretty than it has in a long, long time just for this.
ReplyDeleteWell it has a better chance now than it did at the midseason hiatus given how many shows are tanking on the CW. However, realistically I would say no. It's a shame because I just started watching this show. I'm only 2 episodes away from being caught up. Nikita has the most action on TV, including Burn Notice which use to be the biggest action show I watched.
ReplyDelete1.0 was the final number. No adjustments at this point. Awake is done for considering Vampire Diaries (CW) and repeats of the Office beat it in demo.
ReplyDeleteIf it is renewed for next year (and I think it will), there is NO way it will stay on Thursdays. The cushy post-VD spot will be given to the most promising pilot, which at this point seems to be Arrow. Could go to Selection if Arrow is deemed strong enough to stand on its own though.
ReplyDeleteI'm so infinitely glad that "The Mentalist" is already renewed... makes me sleep a whole lot better :D! I think it's still doing great. And I still LOVE the show. It doesn't have to be extremely realistic for me. But that's personal taste, you know... nobody HAS TO watch.
ReplyDeleteEverything is down on NBC this season, it`s americas 4th bigget network. Community has nothing to fear after two good runs, yeah they were weak but so was 30 Rock and Parks And Recreation, shows that NBC will fo sho not cancel this season. Community had in fact better runs than 30 Rock this part of the season.
