POLL : What did you think of The Walking Dead - Better Angels?

  1. I thought it was "Great".

I think some of the VFX walker killings are becoming low quality if not cheesy. I would rather not get a close up or direct camera shot if it is going to be obvious and mediocre FX personally.

I was wondering how many of the scenes were "straight from the comic" tonight? I was watching the Rick and Shane scenes set in silhouettes against the moon and thinking a freeze frame could have been a cell from the comics...

It will be interesting to see how the group reacts to the news that you don't need to be bitten or scratched to turn into a walker..

Maybe it would have been too obvious, but I would have liked Carl to kill Shane to save Rick, then as they head back for the entire group to see zombie-Shane coming after them.

I already know I will like Daryl as #2 more than Shane.
Shane was interesting, but in the last episodes he went from having honest differing opinions to wanting to kill his "best friend" and it did not feel quite right to me honestly. It just felt off to me I guess....

  2. I'm surprised that I enjoyed so much, considering I have read every single spoiler and knew what was going to happen. But it was so well-done. Beautiful acting and camera work. That last scene of the zombies coming out of the woods was amazing. Andrew Lincoln was so good showing his despair at what he was forced to do. What else could he do? Shane was a loose cannon, psycho, and dangerous.

  3. The acting was great this episode! The last few have been stellar as far as the acting goes...

Shane was just a cancer that need to be surgically removed from the group weeks ago before he metastasized. Some damage has been done now after waiting to long, but maybe it will be soon enough to make a difference.

  4.  oh my gosh. I just blur my eyesight for the gory shit. I'm not a big horror/gore fan. This show is about as gross I as I am willing to get. :P Point is, I didn't realize the effects were sort of cheesy because I sort of tune out the ugly stuff.

  5. Well, they sure chose the right day to prepare with food/water and boarding up the house.

  6. So amazing!  The back half of this season has been so incredibly strong.  Even though I read the spoilers, watching it play out was, and always will be, exceptionally better.  Also nice to see Daryl filling in the #2 spot, more Daryl = great idea.

  7. Being able to ignore FX is a great plan for a lot of shows! XD

I just can't do it and that's why I do not like many VFX based movies or series. I do not consider TWD that exactly, but the more action-filled episodes seem to have more walker kills and therefore more VFX I guess.

  8.  It totally helps with so many shows. I think I would like Once Upon a Time more, for example, if the green screen wasn't so blatantly obvious. Stuff like that just takes me out of the story.

  9.  whoa... wtf?? Nice nod in tonight's ep about Carl shooting/killing Shane
as it was Carl who kills Shane in the comic book (but much earlier than
on the show)... but not sure what's going on with all the zombies
becoming without a bite... must have to do with what the CDC dr told
Rick... maybe everyone is infected and will become a zombie when they
    die

  10. I think the actors did a wonderful job with some seriously lousy writing/character development.  I agree with the poster below who felt that Shane wanting to kill Rick just seemed "off."

  11. Awful. Shane was amazing. He should have killed Rick without hesitation.

  12. I definitely wasn't expecting Shane to die even though I know he's lasted a lot longer than in the comic. I love that they kind of threw us off with Dale dying so when Daryl and Glenn were attacked I was like "Well they wouldn't kill 2 main characters in as many weeks."

I just wish someone had have been there to see Shane point the gun at Rick (hopefully Carl was watching the whole thing). Shane going back without Rick definitely would make people suspicious but I think Rick having shot Shane might be taken the same way by some people (Andrea is my best guess) but if the last scene is anything to go by, they don't exactly have much time to deal with it right now.

  13. None of the scenes were "straight from the comic" tonight. The only scene that was similar was when Carl shot Shane. I felt that part was more for the comic fans, which was wicked.

Shane has slowly gone off the deep end, we've seen it happen gradually over this entire season and even a bit in last season. If you didn't see this coming then you just weren't paying too much attention.

  14. I thought it was just a fantastic episode from start to finish. What a way to end a character. I found in the comics his death just so unnatural. It seemed so strange and didn't really fit in at all. I'm so glad that they let Shane develop into something more in the tv series because when he actually goes off the deep end you actually believe it.

I voted Awesome, the best episode by far this season, great acting, stunning visually, great writing. I really loved the opening sequence! Really good buildup to the finale sequence, good action, great tension. I love that earlier in the episode they showed Daryl fixing the shead were they were holding that guy, so later when Shane said to Rick that the guy go through there upstairs, Rick know he was lying!! We now know what Dr Jenner said to Rick, i.e  you turn when die, even if not bit!! Which adds a great twist and potential going forward.

  16. It was awesome!

I love so many things happening in this episode. I like the way Andrea killed walkers using a pitchfork. And this episode got me thinking (maybe a little too much). I wonder how Randall and Shane turned into walkers without getting bitten or scratched. Does that means anyone who dies will turn into a walker?

Besides, I was shocked Rick killed Shane, his best friend. I just think Rick's dark side would not be able to make him a good leader. Another thing is why Carl's gunshot attracted the walkers while Rick's gunshot did not?

Anyway, I am so excited for next week episode!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think this was coming for Shane. Rick's indecision which led to him to want to free Randall again was what tipped him over the edge.
You remember he considered doing it in season one, and that was a long time ago. Think about what has happened in-between to their friendship.

Really gutted we've lost Shane, he was a powerful and influential character on the show, but I'm confident that his impact will resonate into next season once they've dealt with this zombie army which is heading towards the farm.

Liked Darryl a lot in this episode as well. He feels more fun and awesome when he's gelling more with the society rather than being an outsider.

    ReplyDelete
  18. haha..yeah, i thought the same thing..where the hell did carl come from?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah...you could tell Shane was losing his mind for a while now, but I never really hated the character until tonight.  I actually even thought he made some points, just not in the right way.  But, this was it and it's the way that it should have went down...btw, did they always turn so quickly??

    ReplyDelete
  20. There were 2 scenes like that this week. Shane turning into a zombie within minutes and Carl being in the window and then outside with the gun looking at Rick.

I'm not sure we ever saw how fast they turned before. We came across zombies and most people killed were shot in the head to avoid turning. So hard to say.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Credit Jon Bernthal's acting for making Shane's downward spiral so believable.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This episode was almost T-Dog centric considering he got "so much" to do. Well, so much in comparison with the last few episodes. And why did they give him a hammer to kill of those random walkers? I thought he's not supposed to be Tyreese and then he kills walkers with Tyreese's iconic weapon. Not a fan of that...

Apart from the I liked it a lot. If someone would have told me that Dale and Shane die before the season finale, I never would have believed it. But the herd is going to be enough trouble. Don't think any major character will die, Jimmy, Beth and Patricia are the prime candidates, because somebody definitely will be ripped apart.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I loved it! Even though I knew Shane's death was coming, I was still shocked by what happened. I actually thought Carl was going to shoot Rick at the end there. Glad he took out Shane.

Wow at Shane's descent into insanity. He just went further off the deep end! I wasn't expecting that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I see all of your points, but I won;t miss Shane at all.

I liked him in Season 1. His anti-Rick view of things was legitimate and offered good contrasts. Sometimes between the end of last year and the middle of this year he lost me though. He went from dealing with his own anger and pain and guilt to becoming a legitimate danger to them all that annoyed me more than made me think.

I guess to me he became a caricature of his former self. Shane on steroids...
Even if I understand the reason for his darkness I felt the writers making him lose his goodness also made Shane lose an important part of who he was. He went from basically a good guy who looked out for others despite because he was an emotional guy to an unstable guy who saw nothing outside of his self and his very narrow view of things.

He went from contrast to conflict, and I lost interest in him at least 5 or 6 episodes ago. I would have put him down after Barnageddon. There was no coming back once he did that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Absolutely loved this episode! The moment fixing the truck, the fight between Rick and Shane, the final pull back and seeing all those zombies heading their way... it should be a fantastic finale.

I wonder how Carl's gonna deal with seeing Rick kill Shane (or if he showed up after that..)

I want to know what the mystery with the zombies is, I doubt thats what the CDC guy whispered (something else they said we'd find out about this season). God! One episode left and then we have to wait until October again! Argh!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fair enough. I liked the way he just completely lost himself in this world. To me the darkness of the world they were in was all that Shane saw, and the lack of good and light just pushed him to a place where he was virtually lost.

Mix that with his pure love for Lori and Carl, and his total belief that Rick was not a man suited to this world and the path he followed made sense for me.

I do agree with you though, that this particular arc probably did need to come to a close by the end of this season, as the show needs to keep it fresh and at times this year it has struggled to do so.

I'll miss Shane anyhow though, as I really enjoyed his character arc. When he was listening to Lori today I could tell how much he wanted to see the light in the world. It's a shame he couldn't...

    ReplyDelete
  27. I share your doubt that Jenner told Rick that everyone's infected. It is true that people become zombies no matter how they die, but Rick had no idea of that at the time he saw the bodies of the two policemen at the school, who had no other injuries but a few scratches.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I voted great. I cannot point my finger on it, but something missed to make this episode awesome.

It was obvious Shane would die, he was too far gone, but I was surprised it happened before the finale. He was an interesting character, but I'm glad he's gone. Poor Rick, the guy can't catch a break.

I was also quite chocked it was Carl who killed him (I didn't read the comics)
That was so harsh I hope they will find some other survivor kid so Carl can have a friend and a chance to have some childhood moments.

Daryl is a real asset for the group, and he is more and more reliable. Hope he will stay.
Andrea is becoming a real bad-ass. It seems I'm in the minority, but I like her.

So, bite or no bite, you go full zombie when you're dead. I guess
nobody will be tempted by suicide now that they have that knowledge :-)

Where is this massive zombie pack coming from suddenly?

Will the writers stop making Lori act like a total moron?

    ReplyDelete
  29.  Jon Bernthal gave an incredible interview since last night's episode where he called Andrew Lincoln his brother and best friend he's made in acting and made clear he did not wish to leave when Frank Darabont left. First class man and praised the cast. Jeffrey DeMunn came in for the episode also.

    ReplyDelete
  30. But I agree with people who think Shane was actually trying to taunt Rick into killing him. It was a crazily suicidal act, based on Shane's basic perception of his own deteriorating mental state. When you think of it that way, Shane is also causing Rick to see himself as a monster. I think I heard that on The Talking Dead and read it somewhere else. Makes sense that way.

  32. ***Spoiler from Comicbook show sneak peek**

Carl says he heard the gun shot (when rick stabbed Shane & Shane's gun fired) and he ran out of the house toward them.. he didn't actually see anything go down.************

at first i thought I thought he had seen them out there with guns drawn, as they went out of the way to show him looking out the house window with binoculars into that particular field earlier in the evening..

    ReplyDelete
  33.  shane's gun shot... his gun went off when Rick stabbed him..

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think they said his name 2 or 3 times nad showed him proactively doing things a few times too!
This was T-Dog's tour de force episode to add to his reel. XD

    ReplyDelete
  35. Better than awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with you on Andrea! :) I might not agree with her where Shane's concerned or when she disagrees with Rick, but she's never confrontational about it, she's pretty diplomatic and calm about the whole thing.

I will, however, disagree about Lori. She's a human being dealing with a lot. Her talk with Shane really touched me. She was TRYING to make things right, even if he didn't see it that way.

Overall, great show! I'm going to miss it over the next few months.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I disagree - I believe Lori's 'I'm so sorry speech" is what sent Shane over the edge.  As much as Shane was plotting- he really hadn't gone that extra step to kill Rick, but she
gave him HOPE during that apology.  It was all over his face.  Then Rick dealing with Randall, tipped his Nuttso Scale.

I am not a fan of the Shane character- to me his death(s) we're just a means to let
Daryl (whom I am a fan of) become Rick's 2nd........ which is a 100% better!  Daryl thinks things thru- Shane just reacted to things..... his rash acting is now a direct cause of next weeks: herd of zombies, deaths, the scattering of our group, and most of all:
the confusion and distrust of Rick's abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Carl was at the window, with Binoculars, on the third floor... so to SEE is plausible,
but to get there in time, not too sure about that one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry, don't buy it. Shane was getting Rick's gun, and he had his own. He could not forsee that Rick would stab him by surprise (with a hidden knife up his sleeve). Shane wanted to kill Rick, but he failed, sadly. Don't try to overanalyze it with fantasy poetic redemption.

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOL!! You sound like my husband, who also accuses me of overanalyzing things. Must be true then.

  41. Hi rlwtx! :-)

The day before she was warning Rick that Shane was dangerous and that he thought the baby was his. Then, she goes to shane and fuel a little more his delusion by talking about "the thing they had" and that he may be the father of the baby after all.
She was well intentioned, but she gave Shane a very confuse and mixed message at the worst moment.
With all due respect for the fan who like her, actually, I find her more iritating than touching .

    ReplyDelete
  42. Do we know that this is definitely what Jenner said to Rick?  If so that's an anti-climax.  I don't see why he would whisper that to one person, and I don't see why Rick would not share such a vital and potentially life-saving peice of information with his group.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ha, yeah, he even got a "oh hell no"... must have taken weeks to memorize all those lines.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agreed, and as I said above, I see no reason in Rick or Jenner having to keep such information to themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I voted awesome.  Some brilliant acting and an incredible final few minutes.  Cannot wait until next week.

I liked Shane as a character, if not as a person.  The tension between Rick and Shane has plaed such a large part of the show since it began, so his death marks the end of this tension, and the gap left will need to be filled with something.

Quick question... Call me stupid, but where did the opening footage of Shane, Daryl, Andrea and T-dog killing the walkers while Rick narrated the funeral fit into the grand scheme?  Was that just to tell us that they had started going on Walker killing excursions since the last episode?

I like the revelation that people turn into walkers just from dying.  That must mean it's in the air... I'm not sure where this heard of zombies has suddenly appeared from, but I'm looking forward to seeing how they deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  46.  I think Carl was following after them long before Rick killed Shane.  He was probably coming up on them when Shane fired off his rounds.  There's no was Rick was sitting there more than a few minutes with Shane's body.

    ReplyDelete
  47.  " Call me stupid, but where did the opening footage of Shane, Daryl,
Andrea and T-dog killing the walkers while Rick narrated the funeral fit
    into the grand scheme?"

I took that as then getting out their anger, frustration, sadness and pain on the creatures who were responsible for killing their friend.  Kind of a juxtaposition to Rick's words about the kind of man Dale was and what the group were doing in that scene.  Dale would never have been okay with them just going batshit on walkers, esp. ones who honestly were threatening no one.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, I just noticed that after I watched it for the second time.

Well in mega buzz last week, the two death in Sunday (212)  episode would help explain what Dr Jenner said to Rick. There also been hints at it, Rick shot that guy at the bar twice, the second time in the head. Also when tried to drop the prison guy off at that school, the guards which had turned had no bits, Rick may a comment about them having scratches.                                                                                                                                 I personal really like the idea, but I don't think he meant to be major twist to the audience will all the hints, think most will have idea about what Dr Jenner say. I like it, as in all other Zombies movies/tv series, if Man could somehow kill all the zombies or clear a continental, life could go back to the way it was before the outbreak. But in TWD, that can not happen, without some cure, or way to kill the virus!!!  If think about it some die at work, or kid or parent or partner dies, than someone will have put them down when they turn. This is the fatal of man kind unless someone can do something about the virus. There is a utter hopeless about this future. I think group is hoping to find some safe zone or civilization.   I think that why Rick has not said it anyone yet. I can't wait to see the group reaction to this new news.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That makes good sense.  I can see now how this bit of information has implications in that there really is no safe haven.  Might also explain why Rick has been in no hurry to get back on the road and find 'safety', if he knows that's not gonna happen.

    Thanks for this :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really liked it.   i esp. enjoyed getting Daryl back into the group.. what Carol couldn't do by making Daryl feel wanted, Rick succeeded in doing by making Daryl feel needed.

I think Daryl feels strongly for Carol but thinks himself not good enough.. yet.. and for now he remains better with the action than the feeling.. and i'm okie dokey with that.

  52.  That's the problem with us Lost fans: we got used to leave no stone unturned :))
But I believe Guillermo has a point. The Walking Dead is pretty straight forward in depicting reality on a post-apocalyptic world, not a lot to analyse there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I may have been using my Lostian analysis there, but I really like Guillermo's term "overanalyze with fantasy poetic redemption" and I vow to use it first chance I get :)
