The Office - Paul Lieberstein steps down as showrunner

There’s new Help Wanted sign on NBC’s The Office. The network’s top-rated scripted series might have a new showrunner next season.

We hear NBC is actively searching for a replacement for Paul Lieberstein, the show’s talented chief writer-producer, who also plays beleaguered HR chief Toby Flenderson on the series.

Liberstein is looking to focus on running the Office spin-off that the network has in development, which stars Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) returning home to run his family’s beet farm and bed-and-breakfast (working title: The Farm). Even if NBC hires a new day-to-day showrunner for a ninth season of the long-running comedy, Liberstein is expected to continue at least occasionally playing Toby on the show.

  5. Oh dear oh dear yeah this show is dead if they must give it a final season but maybe not a full 22 ep one

  6. Wow, I thought that spin off was a joke... Frasier it ain't!

But would they really have the spin off running in tandem with the final season? Does this mean Dwight will hardly be in the final season because of the spin off?

From what I gather, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Ed Helms are all in negotiation for the final year. Mindy Kaling might not be back, if her pilot is picked up for next season, losing her as Kelly and as a writer. Rainn Wilson doesn't know if he wants to come back, but with the spin off then that means he would be spending most of final season offscreen. Paul Lieberstein is now off to that spin off full time, meaning a lost head writer.

I don't think anyone else is reportedly leaving, yet. If Steve Carell had not left, then other cast members and writers would want to see the show through to its conclusion.

  7. It worries me that they're taking this spin-off seriously enough for Paul to step down as showrunner... though this continues to point to the fact that The Office should be ending soon.
