The Mentalist - Season 4 - Interview with Bruno Heller

Thanks to CJDavey for the heads up.

It may seem like the crime of the week, but it's really much more. On this Thursday's episode of CBS's The Mentalist, FBI agent Susan Darcy (Catherine Dent) is back on the scene and conducting an investigation into the murder of a woman whose family has statehouse connections. The foxy Fed will ask Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) for his assistance on the case but not because she really needs his sleuthing. Darcy suspects Jane has not been honest with her about Red John and she wants a chance to observe him in action. TV Guide Magazine spoke with the show's creator, Bruno Heller, about this dicey development. Will Darcy learn Jane's secret — that he didn't really kill Red John? Will this nosey nuisance end up dead?

TV Guide Magazine: This is the first time you've directed an episode of The Mentalist. You also wrote this one. So we're guessing it's a biggie.
Heller: It's a very strong episode that has Susan Darcy intent on finding out exactly what Jane's been up to, which gives us a chance to further develop their relationship. Jane thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, and he's probably right, but he doesn't see Darcy — who is the second smartest one in the room — as a real concern. But, as he will discover, a smart and relentless women with slightly the wrong idea can become a real foe. Jane's greatest sin — his fatal flaw — is arrogance.

  3. Intriguing. I especially like one commenter's theory that Darcy might start to suspect Jane is Red John...that would be pretty cool if Jane would become a suspect and would have to prove his innocence. Especially if Red John is trying to set him up...

  4.  And what if Jane is Red John? Like... for real?  Like he's having a dual personality? That would be so incredibly awesome! I imagine the audience dropping their jaws on floor. And the ending of the show would be unhappy - Jane gets locked in an asylum... That would be so epic.
But I guess broadcast network such as CBS will never go for that. They need nice cliche stories where all the bad guys get caught and Lisbon and Jane live happily ever after that.

  5. Jane being RJ would amost be cliche in itself, that's been done many times, especially in film. Oh and also, it would be ridiculous and not awesome (in my opinion). Im happy in the knowledge that they will not in a million years go down that route seriously (for various reasons) but I'd love to see him suspected of it and the implications that brings.

  6. I have to agree with Connor here, making Jane RJ would be really really pushing it. Jane as a suspect for RJ makes sense though, I guess that has to happen sooner or later.

  7.  I have to agree with Connor and Leon too, I would hate it if the show would end with revealing that Jane is Red John. I'm a sucker for happy endings ;)

There is this one thing Simon Baker once said in an interview coming to my mind now though: He was asked the exact same question, if Jane is Red John, and he just said, that he loves it that fans are wondering about it.
He definitly has a point there in my opinion. I absolutely love the fact that Jane isn't the typical (almost) all white main character with no serious flaws in his personality, it makes the show much more interesting and exciting. I love scenes with creepy Jane.

That being said, Jane being a suspect would definitly work for me, as long as he really isn't Red John in the end.

  8. Bruno Heller already said on one of the commentaries of the DVDs that Jane is NOT Red John.

That would be disappointing, after 4 years we've all come to love and care about this character. To have him turn out to be the bad guy would feel like a punch to gut.

  9. I couldn't agree more. I would hate it if any of the main characters are RJ, it would be a major let down.
