History Channel Greenlights First Scripted Series - Vikings

Mar 13, 2012

History Channel is throwing its hat (erm, viking helmet?) into the scripted television ring.

The network announced today it will begin production on Vikings, a period series that will air in 2013. The show, brought to the network from MGM, will be executive produced by Michael Hirst, the man behind Showtime’s The Tudors and Camelot.

“People think they know about the Vikings – we see references to them all the time in our popular culture from TV commercials to football teams – but the reality is so much more fascinating and complex, more vivid, visceral and powerful than popular legend,” said History president Nancy Dubuc in a statement. “We will explore the mysteries of the Vikings – the adventures they took and the people who led them.”

Vikings will chronicle the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrock, an actual Norse hero from the Viking Age, as he rises to head of the Viking tribes. It will be filmed in Ireland.

  1. Without knowing a single actor attached to this I know I will be watching!

I find the Vikings fascinating and the Tudors was brilliant. Camelot much less so of course, but it was not an historical drama like The Tudors was or Vikings will be.

This is a must watch for me already.

  2. Definitely watching, historical dramas are great.

  3. Camelot was more of a fantasy series to me than a historical drama. And it was on Starz and we know what that means...
Really looking forward to this one.

  4. Didn't History channel try the scripted thing last year with the Kennedy's and failed?
I hope this turns out better because as a subject matter I have to say I'm quite intrigued...
