Harry's Law - Kathy Bates on the ratings plus Malcolm returning

-- Expect to see Malcolm (Aml Ameen) again later this season. "I know a lot of people where disappointed when Harry moved upstairs and got away from the ghetto. And this story takes us back into the ghetto, and really addresses what's been going on in the neighborhood and the gentrification of the neighborhood. So I'm very excited about that episode."

Kathy Bates, who earned an Emmy nomination last year for her portrayal of curmudgeonly attorney Harry on the David E. Kelley series, admits she’ll be the first person checking the show’s ratings the next morning. “Unfortunately , I’ve gotten into that habit. What I really should do is not look at the Internet at all ’cause it makes me want to put a bullet in my brain,” she tells EW candidly. “Some of these people are just so stupid. I don’t even get it…. All [they] talk about is the blessed [18-49] demo this, demo that, and how the cancellation bear is gonna eat us and all that stuff. So we’ll see. We’ll just see.”

“It really bugs the crap out of me when I read online that this is the lowest-rated show on NBC, ’cause all they’re talking about is the demo. They totally disregard the number of viewers. And, you know, as somebody who’s 63 years old, I really take offense at that because we do have an audience of older viewers, I think, for the most part.”

Oh, she’s just getting started. ”We do have a real faithful following, and I wish they’d just shut up about the GD demo. I mean, who cares?” she says. “It’s just like, we really are the highest scripted show on NBC. I mean, that’s been our status since we went on the air.” (Technically, Smash now holds the title, averaging 9.6 million viewers in its short season, but recent episodes have been below Harry‘s 8.6 million season 2 average.) Regardless, Bates says “We had over 11 million viewers the very first night, just as Smash did, although we didn’t have the mega press behind our show,” she says. “So I’m really proud of that. We’ve done really well. And there are a lot of people out there who love this show. So, you know, I wish the naysayers would just shut the F up.”

  1. Here here!! Before I read up on the sacred 18-49 demo I was so confused looking at Harry's Law's ratings that it could ever get canceled because it's been consistently doing so fantastically well! I hope NBC does what's right and renews it through to Season 3, if only in consideration of the large fan base of older and yes, even younger viewers! I'm 16 and I bloody love this show! And Kathy Bates too!

  2. Oh boy, well said! The whole ratings system is ludicrous. First, there's the Nielsen boxes issue, and then there's the demo... So apparently only people who are in that range are worthy of the efforts of the industry because they are more likely to consume advertised products. Very sad.

  3. I love how she just bitched out TVbythenumbers... I enjoy the occasional "cancellation bear" joke, but by the time I'm finished reading a single article on that site, I usually can't... bear to read another damn page or comment. It's just the same ol' thing every week...and of course I figured that by now they'd have posted about this in a post like "Kathy Bates Hates us, Harry's Law will still be cancelled."

  4. I read
TVbythenumbers all the time and not because they are important, I check it because they have a 80% failure rate regarding cancellations.  The 18-49 demo may not be there for Harry but its a good show  and the fact that it draws almost 9 million viewers to the 8:00 slot on NBC Sunday is a no brainier for NBC. Im 44 and this and SVU is the only show i watch on this network. Network TV continues to keeps its head up it ass while cable tv is eating up all the viewers. Can you say AMC Walking Dead folks. Network TV does not get it that people do not was dragged out 22 ep. seasons. They was 14 really good episodes split of the year to allow for more viewing choices.

  5. I'm an 83 yr old lady and enjoy this show so much.  It's a show the family can watch (something you seldom see on TV) Kathy is a great actress & so glad you will be bringing a little humour into one of your future episodes when you get back to the getto, enjoyed the episodes with the gang members. Can't wait each week to see the next episode.  Will you bring back "Puck"? Loved that little guy.
