From Ausiello who thinks Season 5 of Fringe is a safe bet!
Personally I'm not convinced yet, but I guess we'll wait and see.
This Just In: FRINGE has been upgraded from "could go either way" to "a safe bet" on TVLine's 2012 Renewal Scorecard!
— Michael Ausiello (@MichaelAusiello) March 6, 2012

Without proof, I don't believe it.
ReplyDeleteYep, same here.
ReplyDeleteYeah right!
ReplyDeleteThey updated its status based on what exactly?
ReplyDeleteThe ratings are still bad.
Ha yes. Aushole going to look a bit of a dick if it turns out Fringe is cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI think if they renew Fringe this will be a slap to Terra Nova fans.
ReplyDeleteYES!!!! I choose to believe :)
ReplyDeletePlease let it happen!
ReplyDeleteIf Warner Brothers gives Fringe away for basically free to Fox then why would Fox not want a show that critically enhances their network?
ReplyDeleteI don't see in what universe Fringe could be a safe bet. But I tend to be pessimistic by default. Better than the annual cancellation rumors, though.
ReplyDeleteA show as expensive to produce as Terra Nova isn't going to get any breaks regardless of the performances of the network's other shows.
ReplyDeleteYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!ONE MORE SEASON!!!
ReplyDeleteG O F R I N G E G O!!!!
YOUR OUR ENGINE THAT COULD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never wanted to believe something Ausiello has said before now.
ReplyDeleteI pray he is correct this time.
I've always had a hopeful and optimistic approach to Fringe and it's future. Considering it's in it's 4th season now compared to many new/younger shows that aren't getting critical acclaim and/or passionate fans...I get it. Yes, it's likely gotten this status due to House ending this year and Terra Nova being cancelled. But look at it this way. Alcatraz is doing...ok-ish. Finder is doing ok-ish. But neither of those have giant critical acclaim and the ratings are ok-ish, nothing outstanding. Andthey're new. Those are shows NOT on Friday (or well, Finder is moving to Friday now before Fringe). Fringe has kinda bad live ratings but this is a show on a Friday night. It does (as much as I wish it did better live) SO WELL in DVR numbers. We've frequently trended on Twitter with hashtag campaigns–which I know doesn't do much in terms of anything but it makes us feel good as a fandom. Fringe is 4 seasons in. Once s4 is over it'll be 13 episodes short of 100 episodes, the supposed sweet syndication number. Obviously it makes sense to list it as a sage bet. To me, anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it have to do with Terra Nova?
ReplyDeleteThey are produced by different companies.
They know that giving Fringe a final season would be money in the long run with syndication and DVD sales. I really don't see it being renewed as a big surprise, especially with the recent news on Terra Nova and House and the decline of Alcatraz.
ReplyDeleteFringe producers seem to have a sex tape of Kevin Reilly
ReplyDeleteAushole? LOL. Very appropriate.
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteOh whatever. Ausiello's gauge of "renew/Cancel" is a joke.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad because I've heard that word a few times.
ReplyDeleteThat's good news.
ReplyDeleteI really REALLY wish it was true.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, TV Line is usually pretty accurate with these types of things...I really really want to hope that they're right about this. I definitely think this has to do with the cancellation of Terra Nova.
ReplyDeleteHe might like that one. Too much?
ReplyDeleteNot at all.
ReplyDeleteBased on what exactly? I'm all for Fringe coming back but announcements like these ought to come with explanations or else it looks like mere wishful thinking. Besides, these guys have Hart of Dixie as a "sure bet". How do they figure that?
ReplyDeleteI'm not as doubtful as most of you. I don't think he would make a chance to his scorecard and make a specific tweet about it if he didn't have a good indication about it from an insider. He doesn't typically make these kind of tweets about the scorecard. I mean, the guy knows he will get a rain of shit sprayed on him if he's wrong. So he must feel confident about the upgrade. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteYep that's true jenni and is why we decided to post it :-) I guess we'll know soon enough
ReplyDeleteOne day in the future, the next generation will hate ours. They won't believe how we could live at the same time of Fringe and we didn't watch it. How it had so low ratings and how it was so underestimated. Don't doubt that Fringe is a cult show and will be one of the treasures of TV people finally will seat and watch the DVD's.
ReplyDeleteSo if you don't want that your grandchildren hate you, watch Fringe live Friday, on Fox and help to keep it alive.
I'm INCLINED to believe that this is fallout from the Terra Nova cancellation? If Ausiello believes that the "opening" of one timeslot will benefit Fringe. Personally, I disagree with that, as a new show could easily fill the void in the schedule. Fingers crossed that this is from insider information and not a reaction to TN's cancellation. WOOHOOOOO!
ReplyDeleteTerra Nova was canceled today, and it does matter because every show that doesn't get a spot gives another show an opportunity to save themselves a spot, but I agree with every one else to take this with a grain of salt, even though I hope VERY much for any kind of FRINGE Season 5.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that, despite what Ausiello has to say, Hart of Dixie is a sure bet but I can see a scenario in which it does receive a pickup. If Ringer and Nikita both get the axe, along with OTH's departure, and The CW has a weak pilot season they could bring Hart of Dixie back to fill out the schedule despite its ratings.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying Fringe had too many brakes, and that they should cancel Fringe in order to keep Terra Nova going?
ReplyDeleteI do watch Fringe live. I've watched every new episode live (with the exception of Making Angels, but I DVRd it) since the season 3 premiere, and I buy the DVDs. And I have every intention of sharing the joys of Fringe with my future offspring.
ReplyDeleteFox already have said that they aren't happy with TerraNova, its creative decisions, they dind't like the show despite the not so bad ratings. So, seems to me that finally quality is more valuable than numbers. Fringe is a cult show, is the best in DVR and has great reviews and media buzz. It was indicated to Saturn Awards now in 4 categories. Fox's president is a fan of the show and maybe they're thinking about to let a legacy and not just the immediate profit. With American Idol and Glee in its network, Fox can afford a great TV show with talented writing and great acting for another season.
ReplyDeletestill good news though
ReplyDeletei so hope this is true!!
ReplyDeleteLet's hope so...
ReplyDeleteI'm confused. The date on that tvline article is over a month old. Are they just updating the original article with no date stamps?
ReplyDelete...I wanna have THE HARD CONFIRMATION OF FOX other whise I don't believe anything I read....
ReplyDelete♥
I really enjoy Fringe but yes, it has been one lucky show. Realistically, according to its ratings compared to other FOX shows, it should not have been renewed last year. The fact that it is even available to discuss renewal is another example of it getting a break that other shows have not been afforded.
ReplyDeleteI heard a while back that we should be hearing SOMETHING on the front of renewal/cancellation soon. But that was two weeks ago, so anything goes, I guess.
ReplyDeleteNumbers are always important - just in this case it was a different set of numbers. I doubt the "quality" of the show had as much to do with it being canceled than the cost of the show. Terra Nova was expensive to produce.
ReplyDeleteI'm not certain that HoD will be canceled either but I'd say it leans more to canceled than renewed. That makes the sure bet tag a laugh.
ReplyDeleteOh please lord!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. There's no way that The CW believes a HoD renewal is an easy decision.
ReplyDeleteOk, but in this case, yes it was an expensive show, but had good/average ratings, wasn't losing money. So how do you explain the cancellation? I think that the poor quality of acting and writing was a part of the equation.
ReplyDeleteKeeping my fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Five seasons and a movie!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIn regards to Fringe or FOX in general?
ReplyDeleteMy best guess is that the production companies, none of which are FOX related if I recall correctly, didn't want to lower their high asking price since they cannot afford to produce a show that doesn't make them money either. Given that almost every show falls in demo ratings in their second season and that it's almost assured that FOX was not going to get near the advertising rate for a second season, they were hedging their bets before Terra Nova became a inevitable, huge financial burden on them. If quality of acting and writing were a factor, then about half the shows on TV would be canceled, starting with the dreaded Jersey Shore. Believe me, unless the WB gives Fringe away so that there is a chance that FOX can make a marginal profit, it won't matter what kind of acting and writing it has. You have to make money. It's a business.
ReplyDeleteTerra Nova's cancellation. Realistically, if Fox were to dump Fringe on top of holes already created by House, Terra Nova, Allen Gregory, and likely either Alcatraz and/or The Finder, it would have a TON of holes to fill next season.
ReplyDeleteFringe's numbers after being adjusted for DVR views is probably one of the key factors keeping it around. It's routinely one of, if not the most viewed shows on DVR.
ReplyDeleteYeah I want some pudding proof myself...Mmmm Puuuuuudding.
ReplyDelete"
ReplyDeleteSo if you don't want that your grandchildren hate you, watch Fringe live Friday, on Fox and help to keep it alive."
Now that is what I call a pitch!
Either way He's still a Dick, but heres hoping its true
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I think Fringe has going for it is that it is a known quantity. It's time slot is lousy. What is Fox going to do with that slot if they should decide to cancel Fringe? What do they have that can do as well in that time slot?
ReplyDeleteYes yes yes!!! Fringe rules and will be renewed!
ReplyDeleteyep completely I know many people don't like him but he is usually pretty good with this kind of thing
ReplyDeleteIt will be a short 5th season like Chuck, I've been thinking/hoping this for a while and I know people think us Fringe fans are delusional but they said the same about Chuck! It can happen, though obviously I won't be completely relieved until it definitely does!
ReplyDeleteTerra Nova took a great idea and made it boring, how can a show about dinosaurs be boring! They don't deserve another chance IMO.
ReplyDeleteI said before Terra Nova even aired that the only reason FOX was airing it at all was to recoup some of their ridiculous budget of the show through sponsors and ad time etc.
ReplyDeleteIn my mind it was a doomed project before it even aired with its production issues and budget issues. It simply could not work as it was. And changing the production value and budget of the show would basically change the entire series to its core.
Cancellation was inevitable.
Lets be honest, Terra Nova was boring, badly written, and more of a family drama then sci-fi, it needed to go.
ReplyDeleteAlcatraz has some of the worst characters and story lines on TV.
The Finder is fun, but better suited for USA.
House is gone next year.
Touch, going completely off of the pilot, is a 80% boring, 5% touching and 50% over-acted (I know the math doesn't add up, but I'm using the same math as the kid in the show)
Fringe is one of the best written shows on TV, and most definitely the best Sci-fi around.
So FOX either adds even more singing competitions, whose ratings of late, are starting their first circle of the drain.
Or we get Fringe for one more season and FOX can slightly make things up to all of us Browncoats.
Is he trying to give us false hope???
ReplyDeletewhat is the reasoning behind the change?
ReplyDeleteplease please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please
ReplyDeleteNot only are we going to season 5 - we're going up to season 7!!! lol dare i dream?!
ReplyDeleteDidn't he put Fringe as 'Likely Cancelled' by the end of last Season? Yeah, look how that turned out!
ReplyDeleteUntil I hear from Fox or the Showrunners I am inclinced to call this prediction, as with the TVbythenumbers prediction a load of bullshit. Another thing we have to keep in mind is the Friday factor which may work in its favor since, while at a series low, isn't a Friday night low for Fox like in the past.
Supposedly going from interviews with Kevin Reilly, didn't he say that BOTH the Live numbers and DVR numbers factored in to Fringe's renewal? Fringe, as we know, sometimes has TRIPPLE gains from DVR vs its Live. Last report said it was up almost 83% in the 18-49 demo from 1.1 to 2.0. That HAS to mean something!
I believe we heard of the show's fate a little earlier than May last year, correct?
Pics or it didn't happen :D
ReplyDeleteA show or a movie with dinosaurs can be boring pretty easy. If it ends up like Terra Nova and Flinstones :D...I have a rule when it comes to TV shows and that rule is "When I start to watch a show I'll watch it to the very end."...The only time I broke it was with Terra Nova. In the middle of the 1.04 I had to turn it off. It was just stupid. Acting was bad, the storyline wasn't something I was looking for. I'm glad the show got axed.
ReplyDeleteWarner Brothers would lose interest in doing it.
ReplyDeleteProbably Terra Nova's cancellation. The budget from that show could likely fund 2 or 3 new seasons in the fall.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. And as a matter of fact, it was in March. So I think it's safe to say that we'll know soon enough whether Fringe is renewed or not.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2011/03/fringe-renewed-for-season-4.html
Thought so! Anyway, they have until the end of the month to announce.
ReplyDeleteThe title would look so much better without that damm question mark.
ReplyDeleteSound good but I want he hear it from Fox!!!
ReplyDelete"It's not false. It's real!" (Walter to Olivia in 1.01 The Pilot)
ReplyDelete"In the end I have to believe in HOPE"
I agree with you, they have to make money, it's a business after all. But when a network does express its dissatisfaction towards creativity and does cancel a show that is making money, this make you think. In the long run, they'll have a cult show that people'll idolize forever, so why don't give it a properly end? That is what will define DVD sales around the world. I believe you when you do say that money is all what matters to them, but is unrealistic to think that they don't care about media buzz, great reviews, strong fanbase. And you're talking of a dead slot, Kitchen Nightmares is awful at 9PM, now that Fringe is on hiatus (8PM is the same). They can't simply throw something there and hope it'll grow better than Fringe.
ReplyDeleteHa! Exactly.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this an old report, though? The link is from January.
ReplyDeleteThe list apparently keeps getting updated whenever something comes out.
ReplyDeleteNo! every movie of a TV show is a failure. It would be a disaster. I support using this money on the 5th last season and not a movie... it's not effective.
ReplyDeleteput Alcatraz in it's place...which would be really gut wrenching for me.
ReplyDeleteWith all of those holes in the schedule, keep it, plug it into a better timeslot and actually.....hmmmm.....promote the thing! It's an amazing show. They should be avertising it on every Fox owned network. They should be running teasers and advertisements all week during other shows. They barely even do that now. You can build the most amazing widget ever, but if no one knows it won't sell.
ReplyDeleteBut how long do we have to wait? I feel like a jumping jack waiting to hear those words...........
ReplyDeleteFOX,PLEASE HURRY UP,YOUR TORTURING US P L E A S E withsurgarontop!
Please, yes ! I really want another season for Fringe. Just a last one ! It can't stop now ! ^^
ReplyDeleteI have this very same rule! But sometimes it is very, VERY hard not to break it. Couldn't watch three episodes of Terra Nova.
ReplyDeleteIf they cared about strong fan bases, I'd be watching Fringe and Firefly every week on Fox and buying DVDs every season.
ReplyDelete1 word. Serenity.
ReplyDeleteIs he trying to give us false hope???
ReplyDelete
