Community - Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase feuding

31 Mar 2012

Behind the scenes, a rift between co-star Chevy Chase and creator/executive producer/showrunner Dan Harmon has escalated into an ugly war of words.

Read more and listen to the profanity-laden voicemail left by Chevy at Deadline.

  1. What Dan did - Especially in front of his family - was completely unprofessional. As is the voicemail Chevy left for Dan.

Team no one, tbh. They both are in the wrong.

  2. Mine was already posted before the one below appeared.

  3. Doing that in front of Chevy's family was not cool, but at the same time I've always heard that Chevy is incredibly difficult to work with. Harmon could have found a better way to vent, but after everything I've heard about Chevy over his career, I can see why he did it.

Both of them were really unprofessional, but I also think storming off a set because you don't like something takes one hell of an inflated ego.

  4. They are both in the wrong, but for Dan to do what he did in front of Chevy's wife and daughter... nothing warrants that.
To be honest, I'm glad I don't know these people in real life. They're both dicks.

  5. Well, if one "study group" character is expendable, it would have to be Pierce, right?

  6. They are both wrong,period!

  7. Yep. I never cared much for him or Shirley. The only time I really loved him was in his interactions with Annie.

  8. Well, the people have chosen, I will delete my thread. Sorry, Klutzy ^^.

I read the news, created a thread on Blogger right away, then I went fishing for some other sources to see if that was really true, and by the time I finished, you had posted the info. I didn't change the time at which I created this thread on Blogger (9:27pm, London time), hence it appearing before yours.

Here's a complementary source : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/31/community-chevy-chase_n_1393823.html The Huffington post interviewed Chevy Chase recently, and frankly it's kind of scary what he thinks of sitcoms in general, of Community and of his future on the show :/.

To repeat what I said on the other thread :

    Shit, that's stupid.

It would explain the fact that season 2 finished with Pierce leaving the study group, in case Chevy Chase would decide not to come back. Maybe Jeff/Dan Harmon being constantly pissed off by Pierce in season 2 (who was often described as the bad guy) was another clue, maybe not. And Pierce acting like a brat who wouldn't come out of his trailer in episode 3.08 (the mockumentary episode) could have been an allegory of Chevy's behaviour on the set. Plus, Chevy wasn't at the Paleyfest thing a few weeks ago. Donald Glover had a good excuse (a Childish Gambino concert), but Chevy didn't, if I remember correctly.

If it really happened, asking the crew to chant "fuck you, Chevy" at the wrap party (with Chevy's wife and daughter attending) was certainly crossing the line on Harmon's part, if he was being serious and if the two had not the habit of teasing each other like that before.

Anyway, I hope they can work things out. Not just for us, viewers, but also for the crew working on the show. Having a bad ambiance on the set between the creator and one of the stars is never good. Let's not let such things jeopardize the future of the show, season 4 was a really long shot and now we're so close to it. I know it can't stop the incoming renewal from happening (I doubt NBC has a clause stating that Chevy Chase must be a part of the show or else it's cancelled, plus the guy has a contract, he must come back to the set), but still. To me, Pierce is undeniably essential to Community, he must stay and play a big part of season 4 (whereas Chang, for instance, is less indispensable), like he always did so far.

Also, Chevy Chase saying that he wouldn't shoot one of his scenes because it wasn't funny enough begs the question : why the hell did he do all those terrible movies then ? I mean, I haven't seen any of his movies but the general consensus is that he did a bunch of hit family movies in the 80s and since then, well, he's been in crappy movies (like Karate Dog, which Joel McHale teased him about a few times). Community, a critically beloved comedy, should be a blessing for him. Questioning the writers about what's funny and what isn't is idiotic. He's an actor on a show everyone agrees is funny, he should do as asked and not sabotage the season finale (I hope they got to reshoot that).

EDIT (about Chevy Chase saying "I won't be around much longer") : OH ! Remember the news about a character dying on the show... it may be Pierce ! Man, I hope it's not him. Filming continued long after that news broke, so Chevy Chase might have been around until the last day of shooting, but the finale might have been shot earlier. I've read that they didn't shoot the following episodes in chronological order. They've always done that, Modern Warfare (episode 1.23) was filmed as 116, if I remember correctly.

  9. I commented more at length on the previous post, but I'll sum it up again here.  Dan Harmon was out of line.  I don't care what goes on behind the scenes, calling someone out like that in front of countless cast, crew, and family is NOT okay.  I'm also unfortunately not surprised that Chevy is a problem on set - I've heard in the past that he's one former cast member no longer welcome on SNL because he's difficult to work with and doesn't get along with the cast.  It's an unfortunate situation all the way around.

  10. I thought the same thing - I've never been a fan of his character, though he has had some nice moments with Annie.  I wouldn't be too broken up if he left the show, though the dynamic would be a bit thrown for a little while.

  11. I'm not surprised by this, there has always been tension. Now as a child of the 80s Chevy has always been part of my pop culture life but I have to say he was never the strong point of Community. Pierce works well in small doses but overall can be really irritating.

If he was to leave I would say it would increase the chances of  S4 as I imagine Chevy's paycheck is pretty damn high, him leaving would reduce production costs.Dan himself as talented as he is comes across as a right douchebag at times, I've heard stories of him attacking people on Twitter, etcSo yeah they both need to grow up but it doesn't change my love for the show itself.

  12. This is ruining the show to me!

Come on, you´re grown ups! Act like ones!

  13. I'm 26 years old and yesterday I laughed as I used force lightning on a Jawa and watched him twitch. Being grown up is overrated. ;)

  14. I was rooting for Pierce to go when I heard about a death.  He's by far my least favorite character.

  15. Uh oh, I commented in the place where it clearly states Do Not Comment Here. So I will repeat what I said: What the heck is wrong with this guy (Chevy). Is he mentally ill? Not normal behavior!

  16. Dan Harmon sounds like an asshole when he's provoked, although Chevy just sounds like he's always an asshole.

  17. Not cool... not cool not cool not cool.

  18. Not very good.
I can resist everything except Abercrombie UK

  19. And I just read yesterday somewhere that Dan Aykroyd is all excited about a movie possibility with his buddy Chevy. Good. Now we can avoid both these terrible movie actors at one time.

  20.  Aw, I love Dan, though! And I'm sure he's not like Chevy.

  21. I know you said it wasn't but this is clearly an april fools.

This is so not cool and like others have said-- I think they are both wrong.

  23. This is just a clash between creative and passionate people.
They both are in wrong here but I hope they can work things out for the safety of this great show.
I understand why Dan Harmon did react like this at the party. Unprofessional but...
Chevy Chase stormed off set without filming his last scene for the season
finale, then he brought his wife and daughter to the wrap party as if
    nothing had happened?
That's totally Chevy Chase behaviour, so difficult to work with...

  24. I believe I hear Chuck Lorre and Charlie Sheen singing in harmony in the distance.

  25. Don´t get me wrong. What I meant is, be professional and don´t try to mock your colleagues for no specific reason than being an ass.

    ReplyDelete
  26. sad to hear these things. don't know who is to blame. but the whole "fuck you, chevy" thing is distasteful, even if it was provoked.  Hope they can sort it out for the good of the show.

  27. When looking at this, they both come off as assholes, but Dan acts more like a child here. It's hard to argue for either person since A: Chevy stormed off without filming the one version of the scene that had been written. B: Dan doesn't deal with it professionally, but gives up and chants "Fuck you, Chevy" at the wrap party, with his wife and daughter there. And then plays Chevy's message at a Harmontown gig.

The only reason this info is out in the open is because of Dan Harmon. He has acted out and shouting about Chevy being a dick. Yeah everyone knew he was before this, but I've got the feeling that Chevy storming off the set, and subsequently ruining the ending to the season finale, was the straw that broke the camel's back. Dan just couldn't take it anymore.

I hope they can work this out, but now that it's out in the open, I don't know. No one is in the right here, due to Dan's reaction. If he had acted professionally, then Chevy would be the one apologising. I just hope this doesn't take away from the great ratings its getting and likely renewal.

  28. The audio of the voicemail message has been available for over a month now on reddit. It just took awhile for this story to get picked up by anyone. Just think the fact that the season finale, which this all stems from, was shot over a month ago.
