The Walking Dead - Andrew Lincoln Teases Jenner's Whisper Secret

16 Feb 2012

Andrew Lincoln, who stars as Sheriff Rick Grimes in “The Walking Dead,” says he loves a secret.

That’s partly why Lincoln has told no one the answer to what’s become the biggest mystery of the AMC zombie drama: What scientist Dr. Jenner whispered to Rick in the season one finale.

“Not even my wife knows what he whispered to me,” Lincoln said in an interview Wednesday.

Lincoln said that in keeping the secret he feels he is being true to his character in the show.

“He chooses not to tell people so why would I tell,” Lincoln said of the sheriff.

What was said has only been heard by a handful of people, and the mystery has become the object of intense scrutiny by fans.

Lincoln said he realized just how curious people were when a show editor revealed he had scrolled through hours of show footage and listened in on radio traffic to find the only two takes where the brief remarks were audible. The cast says the contents of the conversation will be revealed this season.

Lincoln, who says the comments are “pivotal” for Rick, hints that the message was not good news.

“This is a scientist who seemingly held all the cards to what this epidemic is about and I do think, you know, you would imagine he would have something of value to say on that matter,” Lincoln said. “Well, he chose to kill himself.”

The actor also said that Rick and his ragged group of survivors will likely leave the farm where they’ve taken refuge this season.

“Something happens and they realize very quickly that the farm is not as secure as they may think,” he said.

  1. Awesome, thank you for posting this! I've been waiting to hear something relating to this! I can't really come up with any ideas as to what he told Rick. If it was something good, he wouldn't have let himself die in that building surely. So, I imagine it's some pretty depressing info lol

  2. It's pretty obvious what the whisper was now, given the spoilers that leaked the other day - the secret is everybody is already infected. Note: Rick shot the fat guy in the bar a third time, most likely in the head to make sure he stayed dead (he already shot the first guy in the head).

  5. My theory is that the farm is not as secure as it was, not because of walkers, but other groups of survivors who would kill to have use of that farm. Basing that theory on last week's episode.

  6. This is actually an Associated Press story run by the Washington Post, an AP client.  FYI...

  7. I have a question about that being the secret...if everyone who dies turns.... did the corpse in the tent that Daryl found....shoot himself in the head as well...?  I can't remember...?

  8.  He had killed himself, but I don't remember if it was mentioned how.

  9. Still think it has to do with the fact that all who die will come back zombiefied. Unless they've had their brains bashed in or shot out. You don't have to be bitten to contract the disease.

Also, if I recall correctly, Jenner explained how the disease worked. He mentioned something about how activity increases in the brain after the point of death. So this virus or whatever doesn't take effect until death. If one is bitten, it brings on fever and other symptoms. Symptoms that kill you and turn you into a zombie. Either way, everyone is already infected. How they die will determine if they'll come back.

  10. Right. I read that spoiler and that's what I think. But if that's true, one does not have to be bitten by a walker. A heart attack would do it.

  11. BTW, I see that Andrew Lincoln will be on Dave Letterman tonight. I have it ready to record. Wonder if he'll spill any more secrets?

  14. "Lincoln, who says the comments are “pivotal” for Rick, hints that the message was not good news."

Of course it's not good news.  If it was good news, he wouldn't be keeping it a secret.

  16. OMG I THINK I KNOW. OKAY. What if Jenner said the disease was Airborne? Because If you guys watched Talking Dead, the host asked if it was Airborne, and the guy said.. Well.. you'll find out in a couple of episodes. WHAT IF JENNER TOLD RICK THAT? Omg. My guess!

  17. i believe the disease is airborne and everyone has it, it's only a matter of triggering it.
