    I like that Caroline's dad chose not to become a vampire. It is said that he "held himself to a higher standard", but I don't think that's the case here. All the morality and principles aside, there are some things you lose when you become a vampire. Of course, sunlight is not a problem in TVD universe, but there is feeding on blood. That may is daily life for a vampire, try to imagine drinking a bag of blood a day while you're still human, kinda gross. Also, when one becomes a vampire he loses the possibility of a peaceful death. Caroline's dad is kinda old-ish, surely he didn't dream to live forever.
    Specifically on TVD when turned, a person loses a fair amount of self control and needs much more effort to remain calm. Also, every aspect of personality is heightened. Caroline's dad was sort of extreme even as a human, as a vampire he would have been self-righteous sadistic hunter with super powers. He would be scarier than Klaus.
