Supernatural - Season 7 - Jared Padalecki TVLine Interview

3 Feb 2012

If you think you have it bad, check out The CW’s Supernatural where the poor Winchesters just can’t catch a break. On this Friday’s episode (airing at 9/8c), Dean gets promiscuous with the wrong person, leaving Sam to try to save his brother’s life. And there’s even more trouble ahead, star Jared Padalecki tells TVLine, including the return of the younger Winchester’s hallucination problem, the emergence of a hellbent-on-revenge Dean and the deeply felt loss of Cas and Bobby.

Padalecki also opens up about the possibility of returning for an eighth season, and what he’d like to see explored.

  2. It is a great review and I love Jared but maybe it is just me but he seems to be on the interview swing nowadays and what about Jensen?! It just seems a little weird to me *shrugs* Maybe Jared is available because he got the time off? I don't know...

  3. So tired of watching these episodes where Dean is in danger of dying by the hands of SPN creature and Sam has to come to his rescue.
For once I'd like to see Sam be the focus on the big bad and Dean race against the clock to rescue him.

Also, tired of watching Sam trying to help Dean cope with Dean's emotional baggage and Angst.  I miss the Dean that tried to be there for Sam after Jess died.  What happened to him?  Right now Sam has a lot on his plate and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Dean put aside his angst and focus on Sam's emotional well being for once in the show.

  4. "Even if we have to wrap things up in Season 8, I feel like it would be a nice last hurrah."
This is the phrase that made most impact on me from the interview.

It sort of implies that there is an acceptance of sorts that season eight will be the last and it saddens me that we will probably never see Jared and Jensen in a show together again after that.
Sure, they might find jobs individually or come back as guest stars on some other show but it will never be the same as it was on Supernatural. :(

As for Jared giving more interviews;  I believe he has always been the more outgoing of the two so maybe Jensen has happily left his share of the interviewing up to him.

  5. I think its personality related, Sam has always been glass half full while Dean has always been glass half empty. We heard Sam himself brush the seriousness of his situation aside by saying that there are some that have it worse.

  6. I was just thinking the same thing and I agree with your reasoning, Jared is able to do all these interviews and appearances becuase he's had less to do this season. Jensen seems to be busy all the time or maybe he's just not interested in that side of things, the time he has off is probably quite few and far between at the moment so he probably likes to just bunker down with the missus?

  7. I have literally counting down the days till episode 15 but now I'm quite intrigued by Sam's role in episode 13. Really liking all the spoilers Jared as been feeding us lately, sounds like its going to be one hell of a ride.

  8. No one gives an inerview like JP. He is quite literally the fans link to the show lately. Lets just hope what he's saying is what translates on screen, coz while he is intelligent and understands the characters well I'm not entirely convinced all of the writers are.

  9. A few months some Dean fans were complaining that Dean was always having to rescue Sam (i.e., get his soul back last year).  This is one area that I don't have complaints about the balance.  I'd like to see Sam's perspective made more visible, but I think they're there for each other.

  10. It makes sense to me from a PR perspective.  At the beginning of the season, some Dean girls were making a lot of noise about Dean not having a storyline, so they sent Jensen out to do a round of interviews.  It was also to generate some buzz about Dean's upcoming emo arc.  Now Sam is getting more attention in comments and Sam's arc is about to get moving again, so they'd want to get people excited about it.  I'm willing to bet that a couple of weeks before Misha is due back, we see some interviews with Misha popping up.

  11. exactly what I was going to say. If Dean comes to the rescue fans complain, if the others thigns happen, fans complain

If we have reccurents/old characters, fans complain. If we have old characters (like Meg who's been there since S1) come back, fans complain.

If they give us an arc-episode/bigbad (name them all) center, fans complain they want more hunting of monsters of the week, when we have a monster of the week, the fans complain that the Bigbad is nowhere and want to see him/her/them

I've pretty much giving up on seeing anything where the fans won't complain for the fun of complaining

  12.  I couldn't agree more.

The actors understand their characters much better than the writers do.

I would say the writers get it right 65% of the time but they should try for atleast 90%
I suppose it's not the done thing but they should get the actors' opinions now and then and maybe they would achieve that higher percentage.

  13. While I agree that the show can never possibly make everyone happy, I think there's a difference between complaining and voicing a negative opinion.  There's both in the fandom, but saying you don't like a certain format or style isn't necessary complaining - at first.

Another point is that I think different people complain about different things.  It's not the same fans who were complaining about Dean not having a storyline who are now unhappy with the lack of Sam's POV, and vice versa.  The people who said they wanted a monster of the week arc aren't the ones complaining now that the show is boring without a mythic arc. People have different taste, so some complaining (or voicing a negative opinion) should be expected.

I don't think people complain "for the fun of complaining."  They complain because they loved the show, but there's some element or elements that's causing it to turn into something they no longer enjoy.  They could disappear quietly and never give the showrunners any kind of feedback as to why they left, or they can post online with their opinions.

  14. Man, everything's deteriorating fast for these poor boys.. and it seems like there's a general feeling that people would like to see the show get one last season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would like it to get 10 seasons like Smallville did.

I think it would be a shame not exploit to the full the on-screen chemistry that Jared and Jensen share.

Even for the actors themselves, I should think that a steady job for another 2 or 3 years is better than having to start from scratch and go begging around the Hollywood studios looking for a casting role in some other show.

  16. My biggest comp;aint has been the imbalance in pov storytelling in the show . It is no good to Sam or me or the fans if he goes through something or he learns something like Marys deal and we have no clue how he feels about it,It alienates him from the audience and fans can find it hard to relate to what he goes through. There is room for improvement in that department but this interview is a very good .I  do love Jareds interviews lol.

  17. Dean rescues don't tend to kill anything SPN.  Getting his soul back no one died that wasn't already fated to die.  Death just up and helped Dean.
But this season the only time Dean has had the opportunity to rescue same (from something targeting him), Dean froze and a teenage girl and Sam ended up killing the SNP creatures.  I'd just like to see one episode where Sam is the target and Dean kills the big bad.
Oh wait, I just remembered, Dean saved Sam from the Levi that was impersonating him.

I just feel that Dean gets in trouble with SPN creature, Sam races to save Dean, has been done too many times.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree, I dont mind Sam having to resue Dean just as much as I dont mind Dean having to rescue Sam. I think its more fun when they're together rescuing others though.

I would like to see Sam's perspective more too, its seems he just does things and mostly without explanation where as any and every descision Dean amakes, his every move is almost always backed up by explanation through the exploration of his emotional journey.

I have no doubt everything Jared has spoiled will be shown on screen however where he is telling us Sam's perspective of sorts off screen it is unlikely we will see his perspective on screen. Everything about to happen will be from Dean's perspective which will lessen the impact of it IMO.

What the writers need to do is get used to writing a dual perspective. IMO that alone will increase the quality of the story telling.

  19. It does make sense I guess more so if it were done a few weeks ago during that CW thing that Jared participated in but now? I don't know really because isn't it well known that the boys are always busy in Vancouver? And suddenly Jared is available to do this interview? And not Jensen? Especially if it is a phone interview...It just feels strange to me *shrugs* But if it is as you said then I'm going to be looking forward to the next episodes

  20. Oh yes--that is exactly what I was thinking :)

  21. I agree with what you said and I don't whether to be glad or sad that the Js may be moving on after S8 - either both choosing not to re-up their contracts or they (all involved with SPN) know in advance that The CW already has plans to end the show at S8. I read on tvbythenumbers that a poster with inside source claims the sets are already rented for S8.

In the past JP has said he's loyal to the show and will do it as long as it's renewed and this great interview gives me the eerie sense that it's an early warning that SPN will highly likely end at S8. Like you and many fans, I'm not ready to let go of J2 and the show, but at the same time I want it to go out on a high note and want to see the Js doing other projects.

    ReplyDelete
  22. yeah Iwould like to get 10 seaosn too and I think there is so much left to tell as well, I am so sad that this now suddenly sounds like 8 will be the last after the network boss said he woudl like it to stay with them for many years.

  23. My understanding is that JA gave an interview, too, to TVLine and any other SPN media folk that visited the set earlier this week and JA's interview (s) haven't been posted yet.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Me, three!  As JP says Sam has always had the ability to compartmentalize his emotions and actions/reactions... this likely goes hand and hand with his "OCD" tendencies.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The problem is, will they get other projects to do or will we lose track of them as we have lost track of many actors, male and female, who once their series had finished disappeared from the scene altogether or were given bitty parts in another show just to disappear later.

Jensen and Jared have played the Winchesters for seven years ( I , too am sure they will get an eight ) and have been type-cast in those roles.
I think it will be difficult for them to easily find starring roles in another show.

I believe I read somewhere that M. Collins had been going for auditions in Hollywood but he reported the pickings to be slim.
As a fan of the J's, I would rather they kept on with Supernatural than not see them regularly on tv any more.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, the concept behind the show leaves it open to further seasons.

After all the supernatural is always going to exist and there are still so many ways for the show to go.

If the writers were assured of being on the air until season 10 they could come up with an on-going arc that would encompass those seasons and be able to give us a smoother story-line building up to a grandiose finale.

The only thing that would give me some comfort if the show ends in season 8 is if they announce that they are going to give us a Supernatural film.

  27. Thats a plasuible thoery, it's been all quiet on the Sam front to to generate some buzz and let the fans know 'hey we didnt forget see' they send Jared out to essentially promote Sam's storyline. Maybe the reason they havent had Jensen doing the rounds is because there arent those same compalints aout his storyline being neglected this season.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well hopefully they will be posted soon :)

  29. I love the idea that the Leviathan storyline won't be wrapped up this season,. I hope they intensify it so much that it'll get to the point that it's actually a storyline worth telling and wrap it up in season 8. Since they aren't really the super-evil that they make them out to be yet, and I don't see how they can make them that way after all the Sam/Cas/Bobby angst arcs have cleared this season.

Waiting is almost over! So exited for tonight's ep! :-D

  30. Don't get me wrong... I'd love to be kicking back, slice of pizza in one hand and a bowl of my favorite ice cream in the other, set to watch the *SPN S11* premiere in 2015... I'm selfish and I still love Sam & Dean and the show even though I have constructive complaints about it. I still feel that one of the reasons why an S8 is virtually guaranteed is that The CW hasn't found the "next TVD, SMV, SPN or GG" and The CW can't afford to lose the revenue from S8 of SPN yet and for very similar reasons GG will likely get at least a short 13 episode "Final Season 6".

Yeah, I'm worried, too, about the Js future prospects (income-wise) if they or The CW decide to call it quits after S8. I *think* that MC is not as quite "well-known" as either J; IIRC one of the issues MC reported was that in some of the auditions he went to it was "Misha, who?".

Still, the fact that "Supernatural" was snubbed at the PCA's with the very weak excuse that the PCA's (run by CBS) couldn't televise *every award*  after winning the major award of Favorite TV Drama (as well as Fav TV SciFi/Fantasy) *possibly* means that "Hollywood" would not throw out the welcome mat for "TV Pilot Season" 2013 (or 2014) if the show is ending in S8. But JP has said he wants to do movies and he has auditioned for and/or had to turn down roles before because of SPN and I'm fairly sure JA has done the same.

The guys both are married now and JP has a child due soon - so it's not so simple a decision anymore IF the The CW does want another season or so because they're contracted through S8. Both have said previously that if either wants out there will be no more SPN. The Js have to consider what their wives want now - JP said that both he and Gen are eager for S8 but there's no guarantee that she (or Daneel) with encourage their hubby's to sign on for more seasons because it's guaranteed income. *I would* sign on for more seasons as long as The CW still renewed the show but that's me.

I could pretty easily envision jumping points for a "theoretical S9" (and 10?") - 1) some entity finds a way to release [just]Michael from Lucifer's cage - what does that mean for Dean (and Sam) I *really. really* want to know what happened to their brother Adam and if Michael is still "wearing Adam" (and Jake Abel is available for at least 4-6 episodes) "Michael/Adam" can be the new BB; 2) "the alphas are building armies" - what happened to them? 3) Dean was marked by the Fae, I'd want to see at least one episode where the show brings back the dangerous Fae.

  31. you would be surprise, I often see many person who are complaining about both different that are the opposite

    ReplyDelete
  32. They could have fit in Sam/Cas/Bobby and a great Leviathan arc if they hadnt wasted so many episodes on the Dean angst arc.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't think that sentence mean much, every single year they keep saying over and over that ''if we wrap things up/finish it this year and/or next year''.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I  agree with most of what you say, although I think even their wives would be happy for them to have their steady income from Supernatural.
After all Jared's wife will probably  be a full time mom for a few years yet, so she will not have an income and I don't think Jensen's wife is doing anything particular either.

As for Jared and/or Jensen going into movies, it's one thing to say you want to and quite another to get good roles, as there must be an incredible number of aspiring actors all going for the same ones.

The fact of the PCA awards demonstrates that snubbing Supernatural is easy to do and won't have any consequences in the Hollywood exclusive circles, so snubbing the lead actors wouldn't be a problem either.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If it gets them another season each time they say it then that's fine with me.
They can repeat it a much as they want. :)

  36. Crazy Sam is back that's always fun.

  37. I hope Cas isn't returning as one of Sam's hallucinations!

  38.  i bet thats how bobby is returning.

  39. I have not been following SPN much this season, is this new?

Looks to be official, but LQ, MQ at best sadly.

  40. It has been around for a couple of weeks. I actually saw it first here on SpoilerTV.

  41. Glad I checked then before I give it its own post! Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm with Jared on the I want to get more on the Leviathans thing.  Most of my favorite episodes this season have included them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Now that would just be incredibly upsetting.. but I don't think that's the case - I thought a bunch of other interviews talked about how his return is something Dean has to deal with.. so unless Dean starts seeing things when he drinks too much, I think Castiel's return will be much more real  :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's what I noticed too.  Makes you wonder if the CW is doing a final season tribute for Supernatural.  I would hate to see it end now.  I think there is a good 2 years or more left in the story telling.  However, from a contractual standpoint it would make sense.  They would be renegotiating salaries for a season 9.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It was nice of  Padalecki to do the interview and I Iiked hearing his thoughts on the characters but there's nothing in this interview that hasn't been covered already.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The contract problem has to be addressed in every walk of life and if everyone concerned wants to keep the show on the air, I don't think that it would be such a great obstacle to renegotiate for seasons 9 and 10.
I suppose they had to do it with the Smallville cast too.

In the end It all depends on the ratings and the cash that the network can make from the show.
I hope that they get decent ratings today for last night's episode.:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm excited about crazy Sam with a side of Luci XD
I think it would be a good idea to leave the Levi storyline without a definite conclusion this season. They only have 10 episodes left, and if they want to do justice to Cas return, Dean's trust issues, Sam's broken psyche and Bobby's ghost presence; they will not have much time to give the Levis an exciting show down. If they leave that for season 8 they could also make them more scary by showing their plans of destruction or world dominance, instread of suddenly inventing a new Big bad.

Also, I'm really horrified, I guess I should know better than to read the comment section on Tvline. Geeze, some people are scary and full of hate.

    ReplyDelete
  48. mine too, we definitely need more on the Leviathan front. Hopefully we have that coming.
