The Selection - SpoilerTV CW pilot script preview - CW's answer to NBC's Kings

Pilot Shows SpoilerTV ArticleThe Selection:
A very unusual show for the CW it is somewhat of a teenage girl version NBC' Kings and Harry Potter with the cheesiness of Once Upon a Time. the series is set in a fantasy world were people are assigned numbers for their class, a 5TH class girl "America" is "sold" by her father into a competition called The Selection in which different girls compete to become the new Princess of the realm. However the lead America already has a lover who is a 6th class interested in joining the royal army. The setting is a very conservative society where sex outside of marrige leads to jail.
Similar to NBC' King is a subplot where the queen's daughter is having an affair with one of the girl competing in the selection.
The series is very ambitious, and is one of those shows that could just be completely awful or special depending on its execution, i'm not quite sure the CW can handle a show like this but its certainly something different.
The show also feels like it is written for a much younger audience even more so than most CW shows, it feels more targeted for female teens than W 18 - 34.
There is a more interesting storyline in the background of a rebel army plotting to overthrow the royal family that kidnaps some of the girls competing in "The Selection".
The Show features alot of strong women, most of the leaders of the rebel army are women, and the Queen and her flamboyant advisor have a strong political influence.
The overall tone is much lighter than CW fantasy series such as The Vampire Diaries.
Success chances: This show is a big risk but perhaps if done right it could tap into a huge "Once Upon a Time" style audience but this could also be the worst show of 2012 - 2013 something like this really depends on execution in a huge way.

This actually sounds really interesting! I think I'd definitely watch.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think they should have gone more Hunger Games direction instead of this. I'm not sure about this concept, if I were a CW exec I would have passed oon the script let a lone put it to pilot. But they have only ordered 7 pilots so far and it doesnt look like they'll be ordering more so the choices are limited and not many of these show concepts sound like something the CW could pull off. It will be interesting to see which shows get picked up, at the moment I'm gonna say 3 out of the 7 make it to the fall schedule which 3 I dont know.
ReplyDeletethey have eight
ReplyDeleteArrow, Dakota, Selection, Shelter,First Cut, Cult, Carrie Diaries & Beauty & The Beast
i assume they will pick up 4 -> 5 of (Fall and midseason)
I hope its better then it sounds because is sounds dreadful.
ReplyDeleteI'd say they'll pick up 4. They'd try to be a bit more ambitious than last year considering there's a new president and he wants to shift the network a bit but I think picking up 5 would me axing too many of it's current shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the four will be Arrow, The Selection, Cult and Shelter (just because I want to see how a Mark Schwan/JJ Abrams show works.) I'm probably dreaming though, it is still the CW so they'll undoubtedly pick up either Beauty & The Beast or Carrie Diaries.
As for shows that will be cancelled, you're probably right although somehow I don't see both Gossip Girl and 90210 making it out of this season alive.
Doesn't sound all that great to me.
ReplyDeleteoops missed one cheers. I thought they'd pick up 5 so they could really master an attempt to clean house. Only keeping TVD, SPN, 90210, SC, ANTM and GG for a final 13 episode mid season offering. But I think 3-4 is more realistic.
ReplyDeleteI thought this may be interesting, but upon reading this.... not so much.
ReplyDeleteNo actually, not interesting at all - downright bad!
yeah, Carrie Diaries is a definite go (and GG I think will actually get a full season)
ReplyDeleteNBC's Kings was awesome and I still mourn its cancellation. But it's a show that should have been on cable anyway.
ReplyDeleteBut this sounds terrible, not interested at all.
Awww, drek! I was hoping for a kick butt Hunger Games-ish future dystopia feel. Younger and "special" are a huge disappointment. They need to capitalize on Hunger Games which is likely to be the next huge hit a la Twilight, except good. Still holding out hope that the CW will skew higher now that they are almost in the black for the first time.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they pick up 4 too but I think 5 is too many for them to promote. 4 might be too many. I predict a pick up for Carrie Diaries and Arrow for sure. Originally I was hoping the Selection would be one of them but this sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds ambitious and confusing.... for a new show that can be tough. It could mean disaster, but if done right it might be really good. Something inmy gut though tells me this will fall in the former category.
ReplyDeleteI love how they say that since its targeting teen girls, it may be too young for the CW. I seriously don't see a lot of CW shows that aren't teen girl center...OTH, Gossip Girl, 90210...and even VD, I'm sorry but just looking at the posters and the promos its just screaming ''Come look there's 'sexy' vampires'', which is pretty much a theme for teenage girls
ReplyDeleteCompeting to become a princess? Guess I won't be checking it out then.
