-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC took center stage on Monday once again thanks to The Voice, which was the top-rated show of the evening at a 9.2 rating/14 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Compared to the year-ago combination of Chuck (3.5/ 5 on 2/21/11) and short-lived drama The Cape (2.6/ 4), this was an increase of a mammoth 202 percent. One week earlier, The Voice scored a 9.8/15, and that translated into 16.28 million viewers and a 6.0 rating/15 share among adults 18-49. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The Voice (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 8.5/13 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 9.0/13 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 9.7/14 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 9.8/15 (#1)

Personally, you can include me as one of the fans of this fresh and positive singing competition. Move over, American Idol. You too, Simon Cowell.

Unfortunately, not all the news on NBC was positive last night. Highly touted musical drama Smash dipped to a 4.7/ 8 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which placed it third behind ABC’s Castle (#1: 6.7/11) and Hawaii Five-O on CBS (#2: 6.6/11). Comparably, Smash dropped by 18 percent from week two (and 39 percent from its debut on Feb. 6), with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of The Voice of only 48 percent. While Smash certainly is ambitious, the sad reality of the show itself were the bloated expectations. It is always better to debut under the radar rather than with the type of hype you just cannot live up to. Three-week overnight track for Smash: 7.7/13 – 5.7/10 – 4.7/ 8.

Opposite The Voice, CBS’ sitcom block finished second in each of the four half-hours with solid performances from How I Met Your Mother (6.7/10: + 6 percent from one year earlier), 2 Broke Girls (7.5/11: +42 percent from failed Mad Love), Two and a Half Men (8.6/13: +12 percent from a repeat) and Mike & Molly (7.1/11: - 5). 2 Broke Girls, which continues to push the envelope at 8:30 p.m., featured a guest appearance by the always outstanding Renee Taylor. Aforementioned Hawaii Five-O capped off the evening for the Eye net second in the overnights at 10 p.m. (6.6/11), with an expected first-place finish among adults 18-49. One year earlier, the revival scored a 7.0/11 on 2/21/11.

On ABC, ongoing interest in The Bachelor (6.1/ 9 from 8-10 p.m.: down 18 percent from one year earlier) proves that three successful shows can co-exist in a time period. But will returning Dancing With the Stars, which announces its spring cast on Good Morning America next Monday, take a hit opposite The Voice? Here is the half-hour breakdown for The Bachelor:

The Bachelor (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 6.1/ 9 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 5.9/ 9 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: 6.0/ 9 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 6.2/ 9 (#3)

Aforementioned Castle at 10 p.m., which skews older, inched past Hawaii Five-O on CBS for first in the overnights with a 6.7/11. Compared to one year earlier (6.2/10 on 2/21/11), that was an increase of eight percent.

With The Voice on NBC now in the competitive mix, Alcatraz continues to dwindle. Week six of the Fox drama dipped to a series-low 4.1/ 6 at 9 p.m., which was down by 21 percent from failed year-ago occupant The Chicago Code (5.2/ 8 on 2/21/11). Earlier in the evening on Fox was soon-to-conclude House at a 4.7/ 7 (#4) at 8 p.m. -- 33 percent below one year earlier (7.0/10 on 2/21/11). Hugh Laurie and company were wise to call it quits.

The CW closed the night with its uneventful combination of Gossip Girl (#5: 1.1/ 2) and a freshman drama Hart of Dixie (1.2/ 2), which was equal to Gossip Girl on the year-ago evening. Compared to former Monday 8 p.m. anchor 90210 (1.4/ 2 on 2/21/11), Gossip Girl dropped by 21 percent. That said, shouldn’t the drama call it quits this spring?

  1. Yay for CBS!

    Crap about Alcatraz.

  2. Glad HIMYM is back up, wasn't that great last week (both in ratings and quality).

  3. No! SMASH dropped in ratings again?! :(

    ReplyDelete
  4. Poor Alcatraz.  It's failing badly now that The Voice is on.  :(

    ReplyDelete
  5. Damn, Smash has to increase or stay where it is now, ratings-wise. Last night's episode was a bit 'meh', but it's still an amazing show and should be watched.

  6. I wish GG would just end this Season..havent we seen it go down hill long enough? Will there be ANY viewers next Season..I cant imagine

    ReplyDelete
  7. People shouldn't be so worried about Smash. Those ratings are considered solid on NBC, and that's all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I would not be so sure. Those ratings and the constant week on week declines is very worrying.

If they go down again next week then it will probably be in the "In Danger" zone of our Cancellation Table.

  9. Poor Alcatraz... :( but YAY CASTLE! :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I really hope not cause I love SMASH it's a great show and for NBC they have great numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just wanted to say I really admire the author's dedication to kicking House when it's down. ;)

Ever since last year he's been including little digs about how the show
needs to die, and now that it's official, he continues with the
remarks--basking in his prescience. Good for you, man! :D

  12. I don't understand why the cw would ever consider renewing GG. The writing is horrible , rating is horrible. I rather see nikita survive another season than GG

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's been losing viewers/demos each year, they could easily close it out this season if they wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  14. yeah for Castle!! best show ever!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why do you think the CW is failing so much?  It's because of poor decision making that causes their network to be a laughing stock and they want to continue Dawn Ostroff's self-destructing legacy of running the company into the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah I totally agree ^^

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes I do agree , but surely they must notice that GG's ratings are dropping every week. I've read here somewhere that GG has a 100 procent chance of renewal. this is not poor but horrible decision making

    ReplyDelete
  18.  Last night episode with the hooker he married last year was lame. Of course ratings suck

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mediocre numbers are unacceptable when the entire network pimps you as their number one marketed new series.

It may not get them canceled early, but their renewal will be debated a while and no sure thing. Look at Terra Nova. It did okay I guess, but with all that money spent in promotion and in production it is teetering on the edge of extinction now after mediocre numbers. And Terra Nova did not have Juggernaut like The Voice in front of it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, i noticed this too. It's getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Gossip Girl is close to getting under a million, lol.  Will this be the 1st renewal of a chow that gets under 1 million?

    ReplyDelete
  22. God damn it. I hate that shows like the voice make shows like Alcatraz drop. What a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yay for HIMYM, Hawaii Five-0 & 2 Broke Girls :D

  24. http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/02/cw-early-renewalcancellation-buzz.html
Ok , this is only the buzz. But last year this buzz was pretty accurate. Maybe they will give GG a last 12 episodes like One Tree Hill. idk.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Things are not looking good for Gossip Girl... it's still a "strong" performer in the W18-34 demo but the CW can't ignore it's lousy 18-49 rating.

If it goes under 1 million it's toast.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bad numbers for Castle, but I'm glad its in the winners section anyway! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. The W18-34 demo is terrible, it's nothing to brag about.  It's already dropped to 1 million, the CW  deserves to fail with terrible decision making like this.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow, CBS's comedy lineup had a great night!

    ReplyDelete
  29. One Tree Hill is actually much more stable and has done much better than Gossip Girl has.

If they do get another season, I wonder how low it will sink.  This is the CW's stupidity at its' finest, it deserves to continue to fail.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Glad to see H50 on top again after the fall of smash.   Looking forward to the rest of the season, my favorite show.

    Oh No GG...
Next week is live or die...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Alcatraz. Ouch. Though any failures on FOX bode well for Fringe. But still. Can't say I am overly attached to the Rock though. Smash is on a fast decline too. I'm not even sure I want to watch the newest one. I want to like the show but it has a lot of negatives for me.

Castle was third at 10pm in the A18-49 and two in viewers according to TVBytheNumbers and The Hollywood Reporter. So no, Castle wasn't #1 :(

    ReplyDelete
  34. All I gotta say is that I won't miss Alcatraz at all but I don't understand why are people still watching HIMYM. Personaly I watch it just cause I hope it will get better at some point and I wanna know who the mother is. And I have an unwritten rule for myself that every show I start watching I will watch 'till its end or cancelation. I broke it just once. With Terra Nova.

    ReplyDelete
  35. FOX  ... DREW THE FRINGE TUESDAYS WHEN performed more than 3.3

    ReplyDelete
  36. ready to retire, thats not even clever we already know its going off the air.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It is just such a shame , considering they have decent shows like Nikita , Secret Circle..

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wish Hart of Dixie was moved to a different time slot.. It's up against some stiff competition and it is such an adorable show... I don't want to think about it getting canceled :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. Unless Ringer gets a 0.4 again, GG will most likely be tied for the worst rated of CW scripted fare this week.  It astounds me that this show makes so much money with such terrible ratings that the CW is rumored to be renewing it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You have to wonder if Gossip Girl will break the all-time record in most percentage drop in advertising fee at upfronts this year.  Going in, it and Vampire Diaries commanded the highest fees for the CW.  What kind of advertiser would want to spend good money going after such low ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Where's pll and the lying games ratings?? When do those come out?

    ReplyDelete
  42. OMG is that a record low for Castle?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm finding no problem with Mother I'm finding the last couple of eps have gotten better

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm happy that Five-0 is back 10 mill that makes me happy.  I wonder how many people will tune in next week with James Caan and finding out that the previous episode brought it back to the S1 flavour

    ReplyDelete
  45. DROPPED BY 21 PERCENT! Congratulation, GG Writers, pop the champagne!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Chair fans destroying GG's ratings... That's all!

    ReplyDelete
  47. the reason GG's ratings are falling is because of DAIR!! and whiny blair.

    ReplyDelete
  48. two thumbs up for 2 Broke Girls. they have 11 times the ratings of GG for only 30 mins a night...LOL

    ReplyDelete
  49. the CW should just move GG to a different timeslot..they are up against very stiff competition HIMYM,  the voice, damn even 2 broke girls. i'm surprise there is even about a million people left to tune in to gossip girl.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I wish Alcatraz would get better ratings. I really don't want it cancelled, its one of my new favourite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Alcatraz has been excellent so far... I fear, though, that it needs something/someone "sexier" to improve its ratings, though... the story, the writing and the directing are all excellent ... so I fear that it's the cast that people aren't connecting with.

    ReplyDelete
  52. is alcatraz really doing that bad?? :((( I really like it

    ReplyDelete
  53. It's not doing great. I'd say it's 50/50 in chances of getting renewed. Depends what they do with Fringe, The Finder and Terra Nova
