-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of American Idol led Fox to Thursday overnight victory with an 11.1 rating/17 share from 8-10 p.m. But one-hour of Idol on the year-ago evening was considerably stronger at a 14.0/22 on 2/17/11.
Second overall for the evening was CBS with its combination of red-hot The Big Bang Theory (#2: 10.1/16), which built by 17 percent year-to-year, recent entry Rob! (#2: 6.4/10), Person of Interest (#2: 8.5/13) and The Mentalist (#2: 8.8/ 6). Like former Thursday 8:30 p.m. occupants Rules of Engagement and $#*! My Dad Says, CBS will need to decide if time period dependent Rob! is worth keeping on the air. One year earlier, the series-finale of $#*! My Dad says scored a similar 6.2/10 on 2/17/11 (out of an 8.6/14 for The Big Bang Theory).
Over at ABC, diluted Wipeout, which has not benefited airing outside of the summer, opened with a distant third-place 3.3/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m. Year-to-year, that was down by 13 percent. At 9 p.m., tired Grey’s Anatomy slipped to third with a 6.3/10, which was off by 19 percent from one year earlier (7.8/12 on 2/17/11). That led into spin-off Private Practice, which had better retention this week (87 percent) at a second-place 5.5/ 9 at 10 p.m. Grey’s Anatomy, no doubt, was negatively impacted opposite American Idol. As a reminder, Private Practice will move into the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour out of Dancing With the Stars for four weeks beginning on April 10.
Elsewhere, The Vampire Diaries on The CW continues to resonate at a 2.4/ 4 (#5) in the overnights at 8 p.m. But lead-out The Secret Circle, which should be a better fit, slipped to a 1.5/ 5 (#5) at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was equal to former occupant Nikita on the year-ago evening, with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Vampire Diaries (2.3/ 4) of 65 percent.
NBC capped off this third Thursday in February with its low-rated line-up of 30 Rock (#4: 2.9/ 5), Parks and Recreation (#4: 2.7/ 4), The Office (#4: 3.4/ 5), Up All Night (#4, series-low 2.2/ 3) and a repeat of Grimm (#3: 1.7/ 3). Particularly worrisome is year-to-year overnight slippage of 21 percent for The Office. That said, NBC should not move forward on a proposed spin-off headlined by Rainn Wilson as oddball Dwight. That type of character works better in a secondary role and not the lead. Remember Phyllis Lindstrom on The Mary Tyler Moore Show?

Well i'm happy, my favourite thursday shows (TBBT and POI) are doing really well :D
ReplyDeleteNot filling that we dropped to 3rd place but thats ok Greys will get it back. Kudos to Private Practice and TBBT!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCBS needs to cancel Rob and move 2 Broke Girls to Thursday after The Big Bang Theory. That'll plug the 8:30 hole.
ReplyDeleteMe too Tom me too.
ReplyDeleteGA is fading, but not fast. Last night was the crossover with all the people on PP that manage to get 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 people to turnoff the TV in the middle of the episode when given the A-story, Strickland, Adelstein and Scorsone. They just succeeded in doing the same over at GA. It will bounce back.
ReplyDeleteI could see one more season out of The Office. But if they end it now, then maybe we'll see Andy and Erin finally get together. Also, it'd be nice if Michael came back even for a minute in the last episode.
ReplyDeleteStill loving Sheldon Cooper!!!
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, Grey's was ABC's #1 show last night and the only shows that did better than it were Rob and American Idol, so IDK why it would be labeled "fading fast"....it's proven that people are still watching.
ReplyDeletesee I didn't think the usual Grey's hour was too bad, and like I stated above, it was still ABC's #1 show for the night so I really don't see why that guy would label it as "fading fast"...it still has strong ratings for a show being in it's eighth season, you know?
ReplyDeletePoor Parks. Or more appropriately, poor NBC. I don't know how they can dig themselves out this mess.
ReplyDeleteyes i get you point, besaides Greys will do better next week, maybe this just means people who only watch Grey's are not intersted in watching a crossover episode anymore "/
ReplyDeleteNo thank you to Andy/Erin. I hate her, and he deserves so much better.
ReplyDeleteThe ratings may not be that good this season, but I still think there'll be a final season next year.
Well I'm still hopeful for another season, maybe I'm just in worry mode cause Fringe and Community are in danger as well and I love all these shows.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you like Erin? That's fine that you don't, but I actually like her, one of my favorite characters now. I kind of view Andy/Erin as Jim/Pam-lite.
i agreed and it is ABC's anchor for Thursday night. It was proven when person of interest was still on hiatus we were #1 with double fig #s. Ppl want it to be gone b/c they are haters but we the fans keep pushing it fwd.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to think they won't ever be able to, even Smash isn't doing the numbers it should be if it was on any other network.
ReplyDelete13.2 for POI?? I thought it's gonna get higher this week too xD but I'm happy it's safe <3
ReplyDeleteAverage loss of the night was around 11%, week to week. GA lost 23%. If that isn't fading fast, I don't know what is. It slightly over 1 in 5 the people that watched the week before that didn't tune in.
ReplyDeleteJust that I don't think it's GA's fault, but the crossover's. With a character that they did already sample and didn't follow in to watching PP the other time she was on. Last time Scorsone was on GA, being Derek's sister didn't give GA a raise, but didn't hurt. Just that people that saw the character on GA were not interested in following it to PP. PP did not get a ratings raise out of that crossover.
I was under the impression that GA people had been indifferent to the character. Seeing that her return caused a season low on GA, I underestimated the dislike.
On the bright side for GA, it will bounce back next week. And PP will slip to new lows without the help of Patrick Dempsey, and no good arc going on. Because it's not replacing plot-device-son with plot-device-sister that they are going to get people to watch.
People that watch GA are not interested in watching crossovers that are not about GA. If the episode had been about sister, genius neurosurgeon. coming to save Derek, it could have worked. It was about Derek saving someone that was never even on GA. They feel used.
ReplyDeleteThey are right, crossover storyline showed no respect for the GA
viewers. Was constructed to get the Dempseyettes to follow Derek to PP,
ignoring everyone else that watches GA.
They don't even know their own fanbase. The Dempseyettes are, in the GA fanbase, were you find more people that refuse to watch PP. They will never come back, so there will be no long term gain.
A lot of Dempseyttes still haven't forgiven Addison for cheating on Derek, their McDreamy, after all these years.
GA will a boost when it's about GA, because PP people will watch and GA
people don't leave. This time it was a disaster not only because GA
people were offended and left, but because PP people don't give a rat's
behind about the particular arc that originated the cross over, ratings
have been down since it started, and didn't watch either.
30 Rock's ratings are comparably to Community's.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's almost sickening to see how many people bash the show, when in reality it's one of the few good shows left on TV!
ReplyDeleteVery good points both in this post and the one below. Hopefully if they decide to do a crossover for Season 9 (assuming PP gets a season 6) they will learn their lesson and do something different. But, I think I'd rather prefer no crossover.
ReplyDeletehalf of those people dont even watch the show but they just want to be negative and hateful. Like its a tv show if u dont like it dont watch it. Its nt hard, no one is paying them to turn to ABC on thur nights at 9 to tune in.
ReplyDeletesee im a fan of both shows and i rather appreciated the crossover. I wasn't offended i was entertained for two straight hours.
ReplyDeleteIm glad u mention the whole Addison thing-this is what i find problematic about some fans. How they live in the past like some ppl dont want to leave s1-s3 like they are afraid of moving forward. I find it a bit disturbing in a way.
Now im a huge fan a huge fan. I re-arrange my schedule in order to watch this show. But I can step back and realize this is a tv show offering me entertainment and thats it. Thats y i can appreciate a crossover like last night bc i appreciate at the very least the effort. I thought the execution was spot on.
It's extremely immature, I don't see why people feel the need to do it.
